Camp oven bread. Baking a loaf of Spelt bread in the camp fire

Sumptuous camping bread is only one simple teeny weeny step away from damper, and is really quite easy to prep and cook in a camping environment. There are many Google'able "knead-less" bread recipes that produce great results with very basic ingredients, hardware and techniques.
You don't forget the smells of a freshly baked loaf of campfire bread when that lid comes off the camp oven ... and in my case all that much better with that amazing natural stage as my outdoor backhouse.

i did it! And it was delicious, buuut, while camping, I forgot how long the bread was supposed to bake... and I didn't want to disturb the coals carefully set on the curved Dutch oven lid, so I let it bake for an hour. I should have checked, and now I know better, and am trying again a second time. The first result was a lovely fluffy bread, with what was probably once a nice crunchy crust, but because of the extra cook time, there was an even quarter inch of black char all around the loaf's crust. We ate up the insides, and that was good. Lol. This second attempt looks much better- it's cooling now :)

Do you add more hot coals during the 20 minutes of baking? How long to let the Dutch oven preheat?

My Bedourie oven is spun steel, so preheats very quickly. Adding coals will depend on ambient temperature, but bread is very happy to start at very high temperatures and then drop somewhat over the duration so youll only ever need to add minimal extra coals. Homemade campfire bread is delicious
