Great explanation and simple solution. For those interested there’s an assortment of weighted fuel pick ups available online to help keep the suction line at the bottom. Just locate the correct diameter for your project. Most have a debris screen.
Brilliant suggestion. Great for those stinking hot nights up north off grid. The wife will love the idea of running the air-conditioning for longer. Thankyou. 👍 You got me thinking. Use a piece of filter foam on the top of the jerry can opening to feed the hose through. Stop dust and dirt entering.
If the generator needs to be higher than the fuel tank A check valve could be installed at the tank location, so once primed, the suction will continue to draw fuel
The problem is not the external tank. There are a number of solutions and sizes. It is difficult to get a suitable cap for the generator tank. Manufacturers usually only sell their vented cap, and most of the time it can't be converted for a port. Where did you get your cap? And what size and pitch is the thread? Almost every manufacturer seems to be cooking their own soup here. This would be a great opportunity for people with 3D printers.
My cap is a factory spare part, but Ebay sell 3rd party caps that are suitable. If theres is a breather in the factory cap (most of the branded units do) it can be removed. Theres no thread in the breather tap. Its a matter of seperating the breather mechanism (quite easy, more often than not its just a spring and slide off clip) and then either forcing in or tapping in a threaded fitting of your chouse, its plastic so its not to hard. Another option is removing the breather, drilling a hole a touch smaller than the fuel hose and forcing the fuel hose through which would seal itself. Good luck with it.
How does this solution prevent vapor lock? When gasoline is subjected to heat it changes to a vapor and increases the pressure in its container if not vented. Considering your setup depends on the engine's consumption of fuel from a sealed tank to create a vacuum sufficient to suck gas from an external container, leaves no place for the vapors created by the warmed fuel to vent other than the line connected to the external container, creating a vapor lock, thus no fuel flow from external tank.
Interesting question. The generator at all times draws liquid fuel from the bottom of the fuel tank so the solution illustrated is not in itself capable of producing any vapour lock. Excess fuel vapour could have an effect on vacuum in very high ambient tempertures, but ive not experienced it in my use.
I have a system I bought ebay for my Westinghouse i2500 and the fuel won't transfer. The stock cap has to be left off for the generator to run, and then the same with the extended system. Any idea as to why that'd happen. It's a brand new generator to. Runs perfect with the caps off.
Its a flawed design and doesn't account for vapor lock. The gen engine will heat the fuel in its tank causing it to vaporize and create pressure in the tank if not vented. If you vent the tank then it won't be able to create the necessary vacuum to suck fuel from the external tank. If you don't vent the fuel tank it will only blow vapor bubbles through the line going to the external container and never allow fuel flow to the gen. Classic Vapor lock.
Hey Chad. The cap is just a accessory replacement cap the same as the original cap. Small genset fuel caps have an air tap so the hole is already there, just remove the air tap
@@Vagare ok so I did and again NEVER SAW IT WORKING! didn't see it pulling any Fuel out of that bottle you marked you cut the video. the generator was not on then you told us oh it worked LOL so next time you do a video you should show People proof before they go and spend money. you never even turned the Generator ON. LOL
Marcus wow what can I say. It works by magic and all the other comments seem to get that. This is UA-cam, not the Supreme Court, so proof is only optional. The generator consumes 8ml of fuel per minute (eco throttle), so how long do you suggest i film that bottle slowing emptying at 8ml per minute in order to satisfy your curiosity. Id recommend you dont use this method, the magic works only when you truly believe. You should subscribe to Mythbusters, youll be happier there. 👌

Hey Big Hoss, great suggestion 👍
Thank you! This was the first video to show up when I searched this subject. Exactly what I'm going to be doing!

Could use anything as a filter so long as it breathes, i jam a rag around.
This was the best video I've seen so far on this topic. You answered every question of mine! Thank you!
Thanks DesertDweller 👍
Exactly what I needed. Thank you sir for posting this video. #EverydayHero

Hey Ga Ea, its a vacuum so it will draw out of an open container regardless of the relative height to the generator
@@Vagare not all Genny's are vacuum. Higher horse powers not
It would hve been great to see it in action
Howdy, ive used it in field and at the end of the vid i give a go .... although i havent watched it in a while 😆

I got a cap that was specially designed for this purpose on Amazon along with a few other accessories for just $13.
Thank you.
Thanks.
Excellent vid thankyou
Thanks Shameel 👌
Cheers.
Just trying to figure this out ATM.
Hey Jack. so long as the cap is air-tight and can only draw via the attached hose you've got it in the bag 👍

I could only guess a blockage of some sort, but seems odd 2 x different caps are doing it.
@@Vagare yeah I'm wondering if there's a vent inside the generator around the cap that gets blocked when any cap closes down on it
@@4thGen4runner__ I've got a sportsman generator and it's got a vent on the lid that has to be turned to the open position while running
