yeah. Anomen really wins out as the best companion writing wise simply because he REALLY does grow as a character. Honestly when his sister is murdered and Anomen is refusing his father's order to murder the supposed murderer is a moment that will always stand out to me. And i would say he is one of the Bhaalspawn's most loyal friends in the end, maybe after Minsk and Jaheira. (ignoring romance ofc). That said i do have a soft spot for Aerie (kinda had a crush on her as a kid^^) who just lacks the constitution to make full use of the melee monster that is the wizard/cleric. (tbh I far too often play wiz/cleric myself to take her along. Although it usually is my solo run pick, as w/c solo is nigh unstoppable)
I honestly have heard that alot but never have taken him far in a single run since I started playing when I was a kid, I always either tell him off in the Inn or purposely take him and screw him over in his tests so I can just off him there when he goes insane.
Your videos fueled two playthroughs from start to finish and this time I actually knew what I was doing. I started watching again because he's hilarious and will probably have to play through soon. Never been an assassin mage. Might have to give that a shot.

What does S, S+, and RP mean?
@@matts5799 S and S+ are the ranks above A. In other words they are the best of the best. This concept of ranking things as S>A>B>C is very common in Japanese games (see Devil May Cry as a great example) and because of that it became popular among gamers in general.
RP i believe simply means roleplaying, as in, these are character you might want to choose simply for roleplaying reasons because they don't have much value as far as powergaming is concerned.

Hexxat's quests are great for XP. I sleep for a week between them so that's the only XP she gets. The last quest with the spiders is great for piling up all the XP you want.

24:49 my first ever game of BG2 back in early 2000s I had my half orc warrior, Imoen, Korgan, Nalia, Anomen and Keldorn. Not knowing the outcome I went to kill the guy in his quest so Anomen became Neutral. By the time I got to Suldanessalar Keldorn said Anomen was a jerk and they killed each other in the tree so no turning back. I had to finish with 4 characters 😂 great game

I have still to watch all your video, I watched only some tiny bits of it. I am glad that you appreciate so much Anomen that used in the right way can be an outstanding front liner and tank. I partially disagree about Aerie, but it is probably due to my way to play, I don't use SCS and prefer the Tactics Mod with the old game and to play more relaxed vanilla runs with the EE game and I prefer small parties, My usual party is a 3-4 people one, if i want to go for raw power I run with 6, but play mostly with 4 dropping the other 2 at the beginning of each area and recruiting them again when I collect the quests xp reward or for the toughest battles so my main 3-4 men are over leveled. This and kicking everybody from the party but Aerie and having her and charmame, if he has some mage in his build, learning and erasing scrolls, thing that is possible even if I seldom do it, fixes completely her slow progression as multi class. End game she will still have less spell slots due to the level cap, but she can get the crucial spells almost as fast as a pure class caster in a party of 6 played the regular way.
That told I don't feel that Aerie is a good tank that trades dpm for protection, she can do a lot of physical damage, like when she and her simulacrum go to battle, both welding BBoD in the main hand and FoA in the off hand, with their clerical buffs, Thac0 of a fighter, each hit does the maximum damage and 25 STR, and their arcane buffs, Improved Haste and all the protections that they may need they are quite impressive, with a total of 8 apr and if really needed a Chain Contingency that summons 3 elementals, thing that often results in summoning an Elemental Prince instead. Add a Planetar summoned by your main mage and basically you can send the little Aerie alone to the battle and watch her shred to pieces most of the tough enemies...
This IMHO is awesome in a character that has a lot of utility being a good secondary mage and a cleric, not a strong cleric as Anomen or Viconia, that is sure, but she can actually protect her clerical buffs with Spell Immunity.
I agree that even in the end game she has not so many spell slots so she must spare her buffs for the battles that really matter, at least if you don't have Neera in the party, then going to Watcher Keep and getting that Wish scroll can solve even that problem, at least as soon as Neera is able to cast lev 7 spells as having her Projected Image cast the Dwehomers is much better, if some bad surge happens usually it affects only the clone.

Apparently Larian saw Hexxat, a vampire thief/rogue, and thought to themselves: "sht, we can do it better", hense Astarion. Granted he isn't my favorite companion in BG3, but he has a massive fanbase. Rangers do get some love in BG3 so I guess Minsc will actually be worth a damn.
Bro! You should probably mention that many things you mention in this video come from mods. That includes more obvious things like IWD spells but also less obvious things like earth elemental transformation not providing physical resistances.
Maybe include weidu log with all your mods in the video description. Just my 50 cents.
Spoiler: If you romance anomen, there are two paths.
1st path is if you make him a knight. Somewhere really late in the game, he will be informed about some new development on the investigation concerning his sister's murder. It was Saerik and his father died trying to take revenge. He will go to Saerik and try to kill him. If he does, he will leave the party and never return. You can convince him not to and he'll stay.
2nd path is if he's not a knight. Saerik didnt kill his sister. Two thugs did because his father couldnt afford security. He will leave and go to kill his father. Same as first oath, if he ends up killing his father, he will leave and never come back. If you convince him, he stays.
In TOB, he will ask your hand in marriage. His end script deoends on your final choice. If you decide to stay mortal, you get married and go on adventures and become famous. If you chose to be a god, he becomes troubled due to what he'd seen and basically wander aimless.

Anomen has 6 ApR with imp. haste
1 + .5 for level 7 + .5 for specialisation + 1 for true GM = 3 ApR x2 with imp. haste = 6 ApR
yea it works for enemies as well so watch out PepeLaugh
But you can see in the video that Anomen is using the dex gloves, not the gloves of specialisation; and the record sheet shows him having 6 ApR, so he must have true grandmastery installed.

evil party (bhaals child, korgan, viconia aka wife, edwin, maybe yoshi for a while, imoen, sarevok) is the most based playthrough. you just become god in the end, no less.

Any chance you could do an Icewind Dale spell guide? Obviously you won't need to go over the BG2 spells but I'd like to know your thoughts on them since a component of SCS tweaks let's you use IWD spells in BG2.

I have NEVER taken Anomen until my most recent playthrough and I've gotta fucking say it. As much of an obnoxious twat as he may be, he's really fucking useful! Having a frontliner who can use FoA in a good party who ALSO has cleric spells for days is disgusting!

What would be a good character to do a first playthrough of scs and possibly on insane? Im thinking trying pure sorcerer. This wouldn't be no reload or anything like that, just enjoyed the combat of the game and would like to revisit it, I only solod bg1+2 and Tob with a gnome fighter/illusionist. Doing a solo sorcerer run in icewind Dale 2 now, obviously the rulesets are different but I'd like to try the same thing in bg2 with mods.

I am here for watching a play through with you as a female romancing our bro Anomen. But he is seriously a fantastic companion who others really do not see just how good he is. I always take him in my party. Agreed the all the romances are bad and I think Viconia is seriously overrated for it., but I usually play as a female though as a female myself. I personally would never take a character based on a romance ability but that is me.

The main problem is his low wisdom which btw doesn't allow to use any magical wand, his berserker is the worst in the game where you lose control over him and it doesn't make him immune to maze/imprisonment
And he's the pure ranger which is kinda mediocre class.
The only reason to use him really is because he's a canon party member and his banters.
Intelligence of 9 is the only wand requirement.
Mince is fun for a lot of people. He’s not optimal, but if you find him fun, go for it.

Yeah, it's sad, but unfortunately it is true. Ranger is one of the worst classes in the game, his stats are bad and he doesn't have any kind of OP item to compensate for that. His form of berserking arguably is another drawback. As someone else said, it's a shame he's not a Berserker or Barbarian.
That said, you can complete the game with anyone. Want to have Minsc and Wilson in your party, go for it. I love Minsc too.

It's actually the EE that gives Anomen the points in spears. In the original game he only had points in mace and sling and maybe one in hammer. They added that, because he has a banter with Yoshimo about how he saved a bunch of Radiant Heart squires by jumping on a wyvern and jamming a spear in its head. Those points were purely for RP purposes.
You’re absolutely correct. But the number of proficiency slots has always been correct, which basically means that if you were making a fighter > cleric as your protagonist, you’d have more slots to play with.

Just some notes about the S tiers.
Anomen conflicts with Hexxat and Dorn, and if he takes revenge he conflicts with Aerie and Keldorn. He's a great tank, hits hard, and can buff the party.
Edwin and Neera can't be in the same party, which sucks because they're the two best mages.
Neera becomes epic at 1.5 million XP with improved chaos shield. With all her quest equipment, she can (usually) safely cast her reckless dweomer.
Jahiera becomes a tank at 3 million XP with earth elemental transformation. With that, hardiness, and armor of the faith, she can reduce physical damage to zero.
Korgan is great at physical damage. Conflicts with Aerie.
Jan is the best thief in the game and has great equipment.
Nalia is far more of a mage than a thief and starts out with a +2 ring of protection with 50% fire resistance.
Haer'Dalis is a great tank.
Considering how Davaeorn plays with permadeath and no reload, it makes sense why he would rank tanks so highly. Everyone but Anomen and Korgan can cast stoneskin or ironskins, clerics get some incredible buffs, and Korgan's rage gives him some immunities.

Davaeorn's top-notch videos have made me replay these games so many times. Excellent work my dude.
One thing I noticed is that Aerie has a lethal conflict with Korgan in Shadows of Amn, he'll insult her for being weak and decide she needs to die. But if you keep them both alive until Throne of Bhaal, he tries to bully her and she fights back and he backs off, satisfied that she finally has a spine. So their conflict is 100% limited to SoA.

One thing you didn't mention: Aerie she has 16 wisdom, meaning she can reach 18 (machine of Lum the mad and ioun stone) for Wishes without potions, the only character except a custom character who can do that. I like her because of that. She does get Wish terribly late, I tend to play with smaller parties so that isn't such an issue but I suppose she's worse with your rules (I play insane SCS but without double damage and no permadeath)

You realize Hexxat's shadows have powerful spell lists, right? Including the ability to make even more summons that don't count toward the limit, allowing her to basically raise a small army?
At level 21, Children of the Night is easily the most powerful innate character ability in the entire game. It's almost like you were so wrapped up in your grating, acerbic, relentless negativity that you didn't bother to do the basic job of fully investigating the features.
Haven't explored that angle, thanks, I'll definitely check it out soon.
2:11:00 I don't know whether Beamdog fixed it but, back in the original BG2 there was a bug (or it might have happened only to me)that, if Jaheira is somehow killed and got resurrected, the romance stopped even if you proceed her questline. Thank you for preparing this very detailed guide, every time I watch your videos, you return me back to my college years. Trying to bang virtual chicks and being unsuccessful used to help me a lot to overcome the depression of trying to bang real chicks and being, somehow, more unsuccessful.

I dont think monks shoukd be able to wear helmets but i do think (like barbarians) they should have an inmate immunity to critical hits. Id even compromise and have that immunity kick in at like level 10 or soemthing idk

I will say I think your hate for inquisitors is a little unjustified since you modify their dispel magic to 1.5x level. You do show that being an inquisitor paladin they give up a lot, especially at later levels. To compensate for this they should absolutely nuke all Spellcaster with their dispel magic in my opinion. It should make keleborn and A companion since taking him as intended means most spellcasters are a breeze.
Bard can Remove Magic just as reliable as Inquisitor(slightly weaker than the vanilla one), and it can tank, sing, and throw Improved Haste at your fighters. It can also cast Spell Thrust or Secret Word if the caster has Spell Immunity: Abjuration, which does happen here and there in SCS. While Dispel is all the Inquisitor can do. Late in the game when Viccy or Anomen reach 30+ levels, their Dispel Magic are equally formidable and bring much more to the table. Yes Keldorn dispels at level 60 now, but the enemy level is capped around 35~40, so the excessive power of the inquisitor is wasted.
Also Dav plays with Ascension and SCS. During the final battle, both Sandai and Abazigal have Spell Immunity: Abjuration. When Abazigal charges at your with Improved Haste and Black Sword of Disaster, Keldorn will melt in a split second unless you for whatever reason throw Abishai Hide, Defender of East Heaven at him.
Bard’s will only be like 4-6 levels higher than a paladin most of the game so their dispel magic won’t compare in the slightest. Sure, other spells can work on a bard but you’re comparing apples to oranges as the bard fulfills a different party role. Inquisitors are essentially a fighter that neuters their enemy. I know he plays on mods and things that add to enemy damage but this also heavily skews one’s perception on classes since it’s tailored to a different game balance. To be fair he did say on normal difficulty / an unmodded game they are probably S tier. It’s just interesting to use a mod that nerfs their core ability to essentially worthlessness then say they are not a strong class. I also use SCS but never the option to nerf the inquisitor dispel because they give up a lot to be the best when it comes to dispel magic.
I agree with you mate. It's like nerfing Edwins amulet so it adds only +1 to saving throws and saying he is weaker then Imoen because she has the same stats and in addition she is a thief...
Paladin class in general seems pretty meh.
I usually play with a 5 member party just because I find it a bit more manageable, and it also lets me temporarily grab other companions to do their personal quests. I get Yoshimo before going to Spellhold, and right before we're about to be separated, I dual class him to fighter. When you have to kill him later on, having him be a level 1 fighter with no gear amuses me.
I absolutely agree with you for the 5-members party. I always do that too, and since I'm a hardcore completionist it is way easier to manage your group to do every NPCs quest!
P.S. Dude dual-classing Yosh right before you have to kill him is hilarious, definitely gonna try that next playthrough XD

I appreciate the Anomen shout out. I was convinced for years that a dual classed cleric was the best companion, but everything I saw online made him seem like he wasn't that great.
Tbf, the fact that Dav is running the SCS-IWD spells mod component changes things a lot. Base-game-spells only Anomen does not have the tanking capabilities mentioned in this video. Can't even protect himself from dispels. With SCS (but no IWD spells) Anomen (and Clerics in general) tend to end up as a chunky-boy :(

I just would not feel comfortable using him as a full-time tank if he didn't have the IWD spells (especially on SCS + Insane damage), which means no full invulnerability plus he's dispellable which can lead to a very quick death.

The most weird thing I've had Neera do so far on the wild mage thing in BG1 is she turned into a wolf and just ripped through the enemies. At the end of battle she reverted and I was like "What just happened?" Edit: Neera is the only one Beamdog made extra character I ever recruit. The rest I'm just meh.

Aerie has good banter with Minsc. She becomes his new witch. If she dies, Minsc will go berserk.
The Hexxat Shadows (I think other shadows also - if you take control of them using Viconia's Turn Undead) have a large list of mage spells at their disposal: 21-30: shadows (unlike regular shadows, these have no on-hit effect, but they can cast 5x Magic Missile, 5x Mirror Image, 2x Fireball, 1x Hold Person (wizard), 2x Lightning Bolt, 2x Dimension Door, 2x Polymorph Other, 1x Animate Dead (wizard), 1x Cloudkill, 1x Shadow Door, 1x Monster Summoning III, 1x Chaos, 1x Invisible Stalker, 1x Globe of Invulnerability and 1x Flesh to Stone.
The only good thing about Hexxat is the Bag of Holding and once you get it you can tell her to wait at the Inn and you get an amazing item without the woke marxist tard character
ngl, surprised how much hate he gave Hexxat. Glad i didn't watch this before my current play where I used her for the first time. Her personality, banter, and romance all were pretty well written to me. Just made sense as a vamp characer, overall. Though I dunno if my romance with her came to full fruition, I don't prioritize romances in games, at all. Just roll with them and answer as I feel, so I may not have gotten to the cringy parts he's referring to. Kit is lame, can't disagree there, though.

I think bg1 and 2 and possibly IWD1 and 2 and further, planescape torment... the five originals. But he may never do it on anything outside of BG1 and 2. Especially nothing done by beamdog-I doubt he’ll do bg3 or dragonspear.

Absolutely S+ tier guide. The only problem I see is placing Jan above Imoen. If Jan was a viable backstabber this might have made sense, but he's not. And Imoen being a primary mage just gets so much stronger later, while also being perfectly capable of handling basic thieving needs.
Jan is an incredibly good backstabber. Mislead cheese + Tenser's or shapeshifting make him incredibly deadly. On top of this, he gets regular traps and spike traps. I do think Imoen should be S, though. While most people won't, you could technically get her fairly early.
Is there a reason you're not putting Ilbratha in the offhand when equipping two handed weapons? Even though it's not being used, it's still considered as equipped and you have another mirror images to cast.

Yeah, that's why I don't nerf that ability. Let him have than one, really good reliable thing. It's not like Dispel Magic wins every fight, every mage has stuff up that can't be hit by Dispel Magic anyway. It's also still a level 3 spell, so Liches and Rakshasa are immune to it entirely...And it's not party friendly, either... So... It's fine. It's also not like there's Inquisitors everywhere, or that I will ever roll my own Inquisitor, it *only* affects him.

Well. I'm currently in early ToB having him with me, and he rather grew on me. Lorewise, Inquisitors are witch hunters. And that's exactly what he's for. He's not a DPS monster like Korgan, or Mazzy. He's not tanky like Anomen or Jaheira, or your Berserko-Mage. He's there to Hunt and Kill evil spellcasters. He plays differently than other fighter ethos. No Grandmastery means spreading your weapon points; who else are you going to give Axe points for Azuredge and Mace for Disruption?
He uses the good stuff I don't give to others. Shields w/ one handers, Carsomyr - and Whirlwind. Lack of APR means he's better with Whirlwind than he is hasted. Which is why he in his own armor can use Free Action. In fact, he's the only one that can use FoA+5 because of it. It's not the most optimal, certainly, but ten APR with FoA+5, Carsomyr or Ravaver is quite badass in its own right. I keep him in the back when fighting monsters, but when there's mages, he's up. Bring out that Carsomyr for MR and Dispel-on-Hit and whack them.
And, while risky many times - when shit really hits the fan and your party is all cc-ed, having that reliable Dispel is absolutely a saving grace. Knowing that it works means leveling the playing field. We're out of buffs, but so are they. He's not the best, but a really reliable unit and when you need him, he does what he needs to.

I love your video. What makes Aerie OP is that you can give her the robe of Vecna and the amulet (whose name is eluding me) to quicken her spells. No other cleric can have their casting speed boosted. She is a spell slinging monster. But a very squishy one who needs constant attention. Quickened high level cleric spells are scary.

Losing Yoshimo halfway through the game is unfortunate but is it really that terrible a penalty? You can just trade him for Imoen. If you're doing that, none of the xp you gave to Yoshimo is wasted anyways. Also, you can turn in his heart for a ton of xp. In that sense I've never minded that he goes away in Spellhold because if I'm intending to take Imoen I want to free up a slot for her by that point anyways and he automatically does that for you. It's a lot harder if you're taking like Nalia or Jan or something to say okay Imoen sorry I know you're my sister and all but Nalia has been here a lot longer and has more xp than you so you're gonna have to solve this whole lost soul thing by yourself sis.
To me whenever a character has one "X" in its name, it is cringey but somewhat ok. The more "X" you put into a name more dumb and cringy it gets.
