In this series you can join me at the craft table once a week for a few minutes of art and craft creativity - between ten and twenty minutes usually, depending what we're playing with.
Today I'm playing with the fabulous Tim Holtz Perspective Moth die by Sizzix, using it as a mask with various Distress Sprays and Oxides to create tag backgrounds.

I swear. The older I get the more amazed I am by the power of art. What I mean by that is I have always disliked, and have even been somewhat afraid of, moths. As silly as that is. Something about the weird way they fly, and how they are night creatures, has always made them seem creepy to me. But then I see this, and suddenly I am seeing moths with new eyes. And to hear you speak about their “lacy wings” actually makes me appreciate these insects in a way I never have before. All because you waxed poetic about their wing structure and spritzed some colors. Words and pictures…….such a powerful combination. Now I must go and learn about moths! And perhaps re-read “The Girl of the Limberlost”. Thank you Alison.
Oh, what a beautiful, thoughtful comment. One of my dearest friends has always felt that way about both moths and butterflies... I must admit it is giving more dragonfly than moth characteristics, I think it's because of the wing details. Without the colours, the outline suggests translucent wings. Looks like you had great fun with it anyhow 😊

So happy to hear you feel inspired to play - that's the best compliment you can pay! You can always create your own sprays with ink (especially concentrated ink) and water, but they won't necessarily behave in the same way. And especially the chalky Oxides and shimmering Mica are special products... but just a thought. You have a great day too.
Love this technique and I love tags.. I have all the supplies to make them and am so excited to go "play". I don't use my sprays much so I need to go pull them out and get to playing. Thank you for the wonderful ideas.

They look great at different levels. I would be tempted to do a set with an even greater separation in hieghts on the tags. He is really cool looking.
It's a composition method I use a lot... sometimes they're at very different heights, sometimes almost level - and then I always have to photograph them arranged in various positions to see how they look best!! Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

Absolutely no need to be intimidated... it's playtime. The important thing is not to try for a certain effect... just play and see what you get. You can always make it into something, and then play again making different choices and get different results!

I have a really cool dragonfly stencil and I also have some awesome tags too. And Tim Holtz distress sprays. So guess what I am going to do. Then going to the river to soak up some much needed sun today! 🌞🌞🌞🌞

It works so well as a mask, but there are plenty of other dies you could use in the same way... it's a lovely way to make the most of your craft supplies.

What a fabulous idea. I have never thought of using die cuts this way in all my years crafting! Thanks for sharing. It would be a good way for me to try and improve what I make with sprays as I’m never quite happy for some reason
I always think it's great to make the most of the craft supplies we have - and make them do some extra work! I use ink pads more often than I use sprays, but every time I do get the sprays out, I wonder why I don't do it more often. More playtime and experimentation is definitely the key... to work out how you like to use them most. Mine spend as much time with the nozzle unscrewed, flinking the ink, as they do being spritzed!!

Welcome back again! It's almost certainly some of the Tim Holtz Distress Mica Sprays - I think I did use a couple in this video (seems a long time ago now) but probably used rather more of them in those tags in the Short, or at least captured the light hitting the mica better in that video than in this one!
