    Really enjoyed your teaching style - relaxed, creative and encouraging. Been looking for something like this for a while. Your encouragement to explore and to play and to have fun and not to imitate you has lifted my perfectionist tendencies to get my hands a little dirty. Your delight in what you do always comes across in your videos and I appreciate that.

      Brilliant to hear that, thank you... inky fingers are always the sign of a good time! What wonderful feedback to read - very much appreciated. I hope you'll have lots of fun playing and, speaking as someone with perfectionist tendencies of my own, it can be really enjoyable to let them go occasionally (and then more often!)... Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

      Very happy you found that helpful - and even better is to have a little play yourself and see the results in person! And obviously this is just the tip of the iceberg of what both the inks and the oxides can do. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

    thank you for actually showing each colour in both ranges on the same substrate and the final result and what happens with the spritz and flick on both. Your style of teaching and showing is so each to watch and listen too..... cant wait for the next one in series please do more of these in the distress ranges and other products too..... we all have the products but sometimes get so overwhelmed with the possibilities they end up stuck on the shelf, your encouragement means the toys finally start to come out of the toybox

    • @w0rdsandp1ctures

      I'm delighted to help encourage people to get the toys out of the toy box - what a lovely thought! And yes, I do plan more of these deep dives (crackle was my next thought)... they just take a bit longer to plan and film. It's been a very busy summer, so they keep slipping down my "to-film" list. Hopefully I can get to it during some winter hibernation time! (Though if you enjoy seeing the products in action, you might like this swatching session exploring different ways to apply the Distress Watercolor Pencils - ua-cam.com/video/hMFUm9M7McM/v-deo.html - just a thought!)
      Thank you so much for your lovely, thoughtful comment.

    What a wonderful way you show use the basics and differents of the distress inks and the - oxide inks and the paper you use them on 👍 Looking forward to see more😃 where I am specially intrested in is how you make those amazing colored distress and - oxide splatters...I am making them myself for a long time, but never get quite the amazingness of your splatters, so really curious to learn how I can improve that 😃 Have a wonderful day and thanks for this midweek treat❣️

    • @w0rdsandp1ctures
      @w0rdsandp1ctures  5 місяців тому +1

      Thank you - happy you found it interesting. The splatters are probably going to be a proper class, or via UA-cam memberships if I can figure out how that works! Since it's really just Tim Holtz's wrinkle-free distress technique, and since - as you say - people are already using it, but not with quite the same results, it seems to me we need to be able to have live questions and answers for people. I'm still thinking about it... 😁😁

    Great inky play Alison. I used quite a few different paper types, but I never reached the kind of splotches/flicking that you have on your tags. Your video clears it up, now it is to find the right kind of tags. There are so many, and sold in huge packages, they probably all are different. Wish I could find the right cardstock/paper to cut my own tags. It's also the color of these tags that give a warmer result.

    • @w0rdsandp1ctures
      @w0rdsandp1ctures  5 місяців тому

      Yes indeed... it's all about the paper surface (and maybe a little bit about the craft mat surface)... I'm so sad that the place I used to get my tags has closed down. I've got quite a lot left, but I don't know what I'll do when they are finally gone!!

      I printed out the sheet from the Ranger website, available here rangerink.com/pages/organize-your-ranger-products - hover over the ink pad and choose the top option that appears, the Colour Chart PDF. Then I used sticky-backed velcro dots, and stuck the prickly halves to the sheets, and the sponges then just cling to that... very easy, as you say!

      It's so interesting how we all have preferences, isn't it? That's what makes us individual as creators. For this technique, I prefer the translucent Inks, but there are other things where Oxides are my favourite - they're great for stamping, for instance, because the opacity really helps them pop against a background. But that's the joy of exploring our supplies!
      And yes, I'm with you on the Manila... I find the watercolour paper really absorbent with Distress (it's great with watercolours) so I can't get the kind of effects I want. But other people love it because it gets them the effects THEY want... and that's exactly as it should be!
      Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

    OMG! This is one video that I find educative! I am far from being a pro in junk journaling but I love to find videos that is teaching me some new things. And your is fabulous! I have a few colors of distress inks and oxides and never really knew the difference between them. I live in Québec Canada and it's hard to find anything that has to do with Tim Holtz that is affordable. So, once in a while I make myself a gift and buy a little something from Amazon. Great Video! I have sometimes been intimidated by the Distress Inks even though I’ve had them for years. The blending by smooshing ink pads and then spraying water and dipping and drying etc., is sometimes frustrating because I don’t like the end result. So I have started to use the sponge applicators and blend it onto the card stock and it works better for me. What I didn’t realize or maybe pay attention to before is how the different colors of card stock affect the ink color. Very good to know. Thank you. I always enjoy your videos and I learn and I’m inspired.

      So happy that you found this useful... with any medium, the surface you apply it to is going to have a massive impact, but especially with something translucent like the Distress Inks.
      And the absorbency of the paper is also key. My guess with the dipping and drying not making you happy would be that the paper is probably the source of your problems. It needs to have a slight surface sheen or smoothness to get the inks to play nicely. Try out different cards and papers... or just stick to the blending which is also a great technique, after all!
      Thanks so much for watching and commenting... I'm delighted that you feel inspired by it all.

      There are a couple of gel printing videos around already - but mostly Few Minutes of Fun, rather than technical ones (here - ua-cam.com/video/E7SiS4t3bO8/v-deo.html and here - ua-cam.com/video/Ooqn-7DoXVI/v-deo.html ). Both of those only explore with paint, whereas you can use pretty much any medium you like to create prints. In fact, there are so many different ways to use a gel plate, that I think one would have to break it down into (many) videos!
      But in the meantime, the gel print specialists I would recommend checking out are Birgit Koopsen - www.youtube.com/@birgitkoopsen and Giogiocraft - ua-cam.com/users/giogioscrap - both of whom do really incredible things with gel plates.

    This is great. I've been using these inks for years and absolutely love them. My only problem with them is that Tim Holtz keeps introducing more and more colours lol!! Have you ever tried using Oxides on glossy photo paper? You rub it off when it's dry and you are left with the most incredible, vibrant colours. I did this with some embossed photo paper once. These inks are so versatile in what you can do with them, including using them as watercolours. I love how the colours blend together. I am like you - I'm a texture junkie! Lovely tutorial, Alison. I love manilla tags. I haven't been able to find any with the same finish as the Tim H, Ranger tags. I often buy the 10 x 8 mixed media heavy stock and cut my own. Love these colour combos.

    Thank you, I love your videos - they are easy to watch and give me ideas as to how I can create my own beautiful pieces.
    As owning an entire set of distress products is very expensive, maybe you could give us a list of a good basic palette of inks and oxides to start with?

    • @w0rdsandp1ctures
      @w0rdsandp1ctures  5 місяців тому +2

      So happy that you are enjoying the videos... thank you so much for the lovely feedback.
      As far as recommending colours goes, I don't think I can really do that. I think everybody's list should be different, since colour is such a personal thing. Even my colours change completely according to the seasons. In spring and summer, it's all blues and greens and occasional purples. In autumn, it's all browns and rusts and oranges. The one common one that goes through is grey - both cool and warm.
      If you were starting a watercolour palette, then your starter would definitely be a primary blue, red, and yellow (with a white and a dark if you want to really change things up), because with those you can mix up everything else. And if you want to get really clever, then two trios - a warm blue, red and yellow and a cool blue, red and yellow (in fact, Daniel Smith sells a set just like that: www.jacksonsart.com/daniel-smith-watercolour-paint-essentials-set-5ml-set-of-6 ) which gives you easier access to a much wider range of colour tones. But with Distress it's different, because they are such specific colours - it's about choosing the colours you like to work with. Some people like to work with brights, and/or with contrasting colours, opposites on the colour wheel. Other people like to work with muted vintage tones, and/or with colours that are all quite harmonious and close to each other on the colour wheel... it's part of learning who you are as a creator. (And again, my own preferences shift according to mood, season, project...)
      Take a look at my Sunday Swatching video, where I swatch all the Distress Watercolour Pencils... and see which colours, if any, call out to you there -.ua-cam.com/video/hMFUm9M7McM/v-deo.html (In that video, I also talk about how colours I didn't expect to like can take me by surprise - so if I don't know for sure for me, then I can't possibly know what you would like to create with!) You really need to start with a few of YOUR favourite colours and then, as you play, see what your heart wants to add to the wishlist and in which order.
      I hope that's of some use, even though it comes without a list of colours to buy!

      @@janetbristow7431 Oh, yes... that's a very real itch - to own the whole rainbow! But I started with just a few (there were fewer colours of Distress, of course, when I started collecting them!) - Vintage Photo, Antique Linen, Weathered Wood and maybe Old Paper, I think... and then added to the rainbow whenever I could.
      I've been fortunate to work on a number of Design Teams so that sometimes I got products at slightly reduced rates, and working regularly in the US for a number of years helped too. Distress is much cheaper there, plus they're big on coupon culture, so you can often get substantial reductions. I used to come home with an extra suitcase (having spent most of my food expenses on craft supplies instead.... shhh!!).

      Someone mentioned that the squares weren't quite large enough to hold the sponges on their sheet, so it's possible I resized them in the document after downloading (though to be honest, I don't remember doing that!).
