Sound system setup for an event using a Presonus StudioLive Series 3 console - Event Video 23

- We were honored to be back mixing for a corporate event! For this event, there was only one band performing, though, there were other activities and a DJ keeping the crowd entertained.
We are using a Presonus Series III mixer, 2 x Tannoy subs, 2 x RCF NX-45A FOH speakers, along with an RCF HDL-10A center fill speaker. Much of this video covers the sound system setup.
There was some challenges viewing the display of the digital board during daylight, but we were able to work through it. There were about 3500 people at this event (spread out over the several acre event area).
We hoped to get a video of the board and some of the settings, but it was too busy! We're hoping during the next event to get more educational video of setting up the Presonus.
Many thanks to Dennis and Craig for their expertise!
It was a great time, along with some great music!
Its amazing how much sound comes from tiny top ends these days. Compact and effective. I miss my production days, but I might be getting back into it over the course of the next few years.
You are correct. A lot has changed over the past 20 years. There's been more focus on the engineering of speakers and how that engineering works with the physics of sound. Thanks for your comment.
How much sound do u get out of them rcf I looking in to gitting some
@@stageleftaudiodo you also Remembers rca sometimes hunderd of them for 1 event😂😂😂
This does take me back... started doing bands in about '84, moved onto theatre in '86, then corporate AV is '89... been there ever since. Started out as lighting guy, then specialised in projection, spend most of my time these days doing livestream broadcasting. The older I get, the lighter the gear I have to lug around gets... Heavy things are for young BRT's (Blackbox Relocation Technicians). :)

Spotted that as well. Simply dreadful. It brings tears to my eyes. 😱
Makes my eye hurt 😥
Anyone find out what is DJ name is so we can meet up as a team and try to train him?
yep, literally came here just to talk about that guy
Lol...
I was about to say how was that not that comb-filtering disaster with those four means but I didn't realize that two of them were the DJs and they were separate from your system..
Great setup...please can I be part of your team...I'm I also into sound concept and really wants to know more about sound ,thanks ...Hope to hear from you soon
Remember my days as an installer. Concert day was exciting, when it was time to pick all that shyt up at 4am it was a nightmare.
😂
Great to see the pack down as well.
PA guys, first in last out! Remember that tosser singers and wanky whiney guitar/bass players!!!
Did this pa really cover the area? Beacause 4000 people really crowd. I'm using 2x mackie sa1232 2x dual18 inch subwoofer for 1500 people.
The PA covered the area it was setup for. We did not need to provide sound for the entire event area.
Thanks for the look. A lot of work goes into providing sound and lighting for events. I had a contract this past July to provide production for the 100th annual Veterans Administration event in the Madison WI. Marriott main convention hall. There was one band doing two sets that night, as well as speeches and award ceremonies. From start to finish it was a 11 hour day, plus 2 1/2 hours driving time. Made a decent chunk of change and got to enjoy some amenities as well. And the band was awesome. All top players. I love this job.
That's a hell of a good health for carrying it all at your age. Congrats!

Hello
I recently bought a digital mixer for the first time, namely a studiolive 32sc and I can't get a signal from the passive amplifier for subwoofers, I inserted channel A and B of the amplifier with xlr cables in mix 1 and mix 2, what other configuration do I need I do, an answer would be very helpful, THANK YOU!😀🎚️🎛️🔊🔊🔊🔊
If you are trying to get sound out of the console to the main speakers, using the main output of the console, you should be using the main "Left / Right" outputs. The mix 1 and mix 2 outputs are for monitors. Take a look at the manual for the console. It should help you with some of the basic setup.
@@stageleftaudio Thank you very much for the answer!😀🎚️🎛️🔊🔊🔊🔊

Generators are always bad news. I've dealt with that numerous times. But it's not the worst. I played a county fair one year and they had a tractor pull going on at the same time as the band and it was right next to us. Nothing we could do so we just joked with the crowd about it every time the motors completely drowned us out. They thought it was funny so we all had a great time!

also, what is the point of a belt that is loose? might check into getting that thing wrenched down. :P
Please am just an upcoming sound engineer if I want to be a part of any production how will that happen I want to lane more about sound, please I need help
Many people starting out in sound engineering will volunteer at churches to operate their sound systems. A lot can be learned about sound from churches. Also, take a look at volunteering with other sound companies in your area.
I realy enjoyed watching this video. It is informing an rich of details that I needed to satisfy my curiousity about how to manage audio in live parties. Thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful!
Thats really great - it is hard enough doing a show - but shooting a video like this is really a help to show folks how you go up and down. Very useful. Thanks
Thank you for the comment.
Curious why you use an analog snake and not the digital snake.
We get the benefit of digital with the simplicity of analog. Digital (just like analog) is a tool. We try to use the best set of tools for each job.

so are you running sound with just 4 speakers ? wow!!
Sort of...there are 2 x subs and 2 x FOH... but also, 1 x center fill (part of FOH). This was more than adequate for this event.

I find it very useful to dial in the best monitor mixes for the bands when using the iPad apps, whether it's the X32, QU32, Midas, or any other digital mixers.
yep, you can setup the Presonus mixer on a network and then the musicians just needs to download the Presonus app for free and you (FOH engineer) gives each musician permission to just there mix and they control the volume. I have used this a few times and it helps a lot.
Barring the other comment above or below, the least you could do is get on the stage with your own pad and get monitors set up while standing next to the musician. Don’t make the stage manager run back and forth.
👍
Good stuff! As soon as I spotted those food trucks next to the stage I knew there would be trouble... #foodtruckgennyssuck

Amazing Video, I was wondering if you could do an inventory video of all the gear you own ad how you store it. Thanks
We may do a video on this in the future.
yeah I was going o ask the same of to do a gear inventory, I'm working my way into the sound reinforcement side of the bizz, so id like to see all the gear you use thanks
Yeah, a gear list would be very nice....‘‘tis for sharing!
As a dj who now does live audio production, I will say that us djs are ALL improperly taught how to wrap cables. I don't know why. LOL
Then I started working with production crews, and they would yell at me like, "YOU CAN'T WRAP THE CABLES LIKE THAT"!
Almost a decade later, now I'm the production crew, and I yell at djs about how they wrap cables. lol
Speaking of the dj, just out of curiosity, why does the dj at this event bring his own speakers, instead of patching into the main PA?
Thank you for the comment. I believe the organizers originally thought that two separate sound systems would be needed due to the proximity of the original location of where the DJ was going to setup. When we arrived to setup, we spoke to the DJ and determined it would be easier just to use separate PAs. The DJ was very professional and very accommodating. The two PAs worked out pretty good.
You are out in left field!

great job man!! I remenber doing all the same hard work you do. Specially pre and post performing. Greetings from Perú.
Just curious. Do you plan to use the digital connections on the Presonus. You appear to be around my age (give or take) and some stage boxes and cat5 cables would weigh alot less than that snake. The board can pretty much do what the driverack does, also. I'm not raggin' on you. I'm just feeling pain everytime I see you fellas liftin' and totin'. And, you know, curious and stuff. Cheers.
We have considered going "full digital", but the expense (at this point) outweighs the benefits. There's also the issue of audio latency; which can be problematic. The weight (and management) of the snake is somewhat remedial compared to the other components of the system. Besides, the management of the gear keeps us young!
I have a Studio Live 16 with a 32R digital stage box and a 30mtr CAT6 cable. Latency doesn't seem to be a problem. It is so nice to plug 1 cable in to the desk rather than my old PreSonus 24.4.2. and a snake. Any how, I love your videos and how organised you are. Keep up the good work.
Did you provide an input from the DJ so the DJ can be reinforced with those subs and main FOH speakers? That is a nice gesture and can get you more event offers. We always provide a DJ splitter and patch. Remember that many DJ's are using RCA from their mixer, so RCA split, to 1/4 inch, to DI box is required. Most DJ's don't have the larger setup for large outside events.
Good question. We did not provide an input. This question was brought up during the initial meeting with the organizers. It was decided the DJ would use only their system for their music and their announcements. The DJ was very professional and great to work with.
On the business side with this type of arrangement, our sound system was setup for live sound only, not recorded music. Most DJs know how their sound system will sound and perform at a venue (indoor or outdoor)... introducing a different sound system (with much different performance characteristics) to a DJ could potentially have negative results with sound quality/clarity, which could potentially represent the DJ in a negative light. Thanks for the comment. I hope to have a video in the future covering this subject.
a problem that is often experienced by the crew in the player, sometimes we meet players who understand us, sometimes we meet arrogant players, even if there is no us, they will not look good.
Love the video man. Awesome set up. But a quick question, why use an analog snake with a digital board, when you could just run a cat 6 Ethernet cable To a digital snake on stage?
Great question. There's a lot of variables on my decision not to (at this time) deploy a digital solution. I use analog snakes because they are inexpensive, require no electricity, and can easily support a wide range of setups. I think digital snake solutions (not just a CAT 6 cable!!) are a great tool... however, they have their place. For us, as a sound provider working various sized events with various acts, moving to full digital would be very expensive and would require more storage space... as compared to a band using a digital setup (usually a fixed number of inputs... all setup the same way for each show). For us (as a provider), this would require a lot of redundancy for some of the equipment (CAT cables, digital stage boxes, switches, rack(s) to hold the gear; PDU, UPS, etc...). One of the biggest drawbacks with a digital solution is the inability to use a speaker management system (crossover, delays, limiting, etc...) at the FOH location. A digital solution would work better on setups where there is no need for an external crossover (i.e. Driverack)... like self-powered speakers with internal crossovers.
Earlier this year, I did a video covering digital snakes and why we have not deployed a solution. Many viewers posted their opinions and experiences on the topic:

Why Was There A Dj But He Or She Didn't Even Dj And Also, Were Was The SOUND MIXER FOR MONITORS Set Up?
The DJ performed most of the evening; we did not get video of their service, because they were not associated with Stage Left Audio Productions, LLC. The mixing of the monitors was conducted from the FOH console.
That guitar in the mix is really blaring were is the bass? kick also sound way to boomy no punch or click Snare sound on point.
The camera mic doesn't handle loud volume too well. The internal mic compresses everything when there's too much volume.
Halo saya dari Indonesia, saya mengikuti video anda sejak lama. Saya senang melihat perlatan anda. Kabel merek apa yang anda gunakan untuk sub dan ukuran berapa ? Terimakasih

Great video! What was the DJ's speakers and did they play at the same time with your pair of speakers during the event?
Thank you for the comment. I don't recall the brand of the DJ's speakers. Those speakers were completely separate from our system. They were only used when the DJ was playing music or talking. Our sound system and the DJ's system were completely separate.
@@stageleftaudio thank you
Very professional setup. One question: Do you get power ally’s (nulls and nodes) with the subs being separated at that distance? Wouldn’t keeping them together in the center at 3-6db and a more even coverage? Curious how you accommodate. Also would give you a spot for a center fill speaker on top… just a thought. Love the videos!
Thanks for your comment. Good question. The subs are spaced about 12ft. apart. This is about the widest they can be before producing a power-ally in most of the bass frequencies. The 12ft. spacing provides coverage (even coverage) from about 25hz to 60hz, and allows for coupling in the lower frequencies (increasing the SPL). The spacing also provides for bass cancellations (with the lower frequencies) for the far left and right of the cabinets... this allows for vendors to conduct business by keeping the lower bass attenuated on the sides of the stage. Around 60hz and up, a power-ally begins to form (and bass starts producing on the sides of the stage) though, as the bass frequencies rise, they are slowly transitioned over to the top cabinets (due to the crossover point).
Keeping the subs directly centered, will provide even coverage through most of the bass frequencies, however, the overall SPL of that type of setup will be less due to the lack of coupling, and it will result in a lot of bass being produced all around the cabinets throughout most of the bass frequency range. Placing the subs in the center is still a much better option (for coverage) than spreading them apart to each side of the stage.
For a center-fill, It is much better to place it on the stage than on a sub. The stage is usually taller, which yields better coverage results for the crowd. Placing a center-fill on a sub will require the center-fill to be strapped down. Also, but rarely, a center-fill on a sub is subject to tinkering, liquids being spilled on it, breaking... due to attending people being so close to it. The stage is usually a safer location!
Hope this helps.
@@stageleftaudiothank you for sharing your insightful experience. I never knew I would still be safe from power ally’s under 12ft. I have 4 subs that I’ll try this out with. Thanks you!
You are welcome. If you are going to use all 4 subs straight across, try separating them by 6ft (on center), not 12ft. This will provide more even coverage out front (and greater SPL) and will help with the bass cancellations on the sides of the deployment. The bass frequency coupling and cancellations can start becoming a bigger problem when adding more subs.
Wow I love you all I love old❤

You should have offered to let the DJ di into your system.. would be far better sound....
Actually, we offered to do that, but the producers wanted to keep the sound systems separate.
Is there something needed to activate the stage box with the PreSonus 32channel studiolive?, We plug ours in the Green lights blink like its communicating but we cant' get anything to come through.
The green light should be solid (indicating connectivity). Make sure the console and stage boxes are at the same firmware level. Also, you will need to set where the "clocking" will be coming from, which should probably be the FOH console.
Presonus has documentation available that covers the connectivity and firmware upgrades.
Why does he focus on the Drum Gates, while the Vocal mics are feeding Back extremely...?
Was probably working through the inputs getting them setup in a linear manner.
Great Video! I been following you for a while now. Keep them videos coming.

Thank you for your comment.
I love your production videos.
In Holland we usealy keep the faders around zero, and trim the input with the gain. "Geen gelul, faders op nul".
That's the way it should be.
That changes the monitor mix every time you change the input gain. Musicians hate that.
There is an unfortunate trend in audio mixing to use the gain controls to provide a mix.
@@stageleftaudio who is saiyng something about constant mixing with the gain? You use the gain to achieve a good signal to to noice ratio to bigin with.
Then you mix with your faders with some small amount, the monitor mix is prefader.
When You're fader is at -50 db and your gain at +50 db, maybe you get 0db to you amplifier, but it could result in some distortion.
Question, what kind of led-lamp are you using above the studiolive32.
That light is from K&M (K&M Stands 12295 Music Stand Dimmer) We find they have a good amount of light output, but sometimes too much light (depending on how much, or the lack of, light where the mixer is positioned).
Thank you very much for information. Great video, love to watch them.
Hey! How are you? I see you have both a Furman M-8x AR 15A Voltage Regulator and a Tripp Lite UPS, to ensure that the Digital Board, doesn't go out or get zapped. Is the Tripp Lite not enough, to protect the board or do you need both?? Looking at costs. When you get a minute, if you could explain. Thanks Carl
Greetings. Hope you are enjoying the videos! The Furman AR-1215 is a voltage regulator. It's only job is to ensure consistent regulated power is provided for all the gear at FOH. The UPS is there only to provide power to the console and drive-rack if a power outage should occur. The UPS is powered from the voltage regulator. The UPS has some electrical safeguards in place, but it's only job is to provide emergency power to a few pieces of gear during an outage. That UPS provides enough power for the console and the drive-rack... more than enough time to shut down things gracefully if needed. For other gear at FOH (i.e. fan, FOH lights, ancillary items), these all get plugged into the voltage regulator... these other items do not need to be "on" during a power outage.
@@stageleftaudio Thank you!
Super performance 👏 👌
I’m looking for a affordable line array could you give any suggestions passive
Following up to your other question, we use all powered line-array cabinets. Passive cabinets are less expensive, but will require the user to have a good understanding of watts, compression, and limiters. It's easy to burn a passive speaker if there's too much power fed to them.
Good ol sl-100 stage. Love eem'.
Hi Stageleft, beautiful and unique stuff you have there, please what happens to the old stuff you no longer use? Im Eric from Ghana
Thank you for your comment. Any old equipment we may have we sell locally. However, we rarely have equipment to sell.
@@stageleftaudio Thank you for the responds but i need an advice, i use a V3000 power amp for my bass bins and a GLS C2000 power amp for my mid and tweeters, the problem is when ever the power voltage drops below 240 volts the amps drops power and hence bad sound, please what do i have to do to solve this problem?!
There could be a few reasons why the voltage is dropping. I'm not familiar with the amplifiers you are referencing. However, some common issues with power are these:
- There is something else running on the same circuit as the amplifier. Something that consumes a lot power (i.e. soda machines). Make sure the amp is on its own circuit.
- If you are using extension cords for the amp, the wire gauge of the extension cord may be too small. May need to user bigger/thicker gauge power cords.
- The distance from the power source to the amplifier is too far; this results in voltage drops
- The amplifier may be too sensitive to power fluctuations; this is usually internal to the amp and cannot be adjusted/fixed/corrected.
- Make sure the amp is NOT plugged into a power conditioner. Power conditioners are for steady-state voltage consumption only. Amplifiers are dynamic voltage consumption devices.
Nice clear marking on those flight cases!
It's easy for us and the volunteers (along with other help) to read.
Sure it is. Good job!
One day i will make it
Good job my bro
Nice sound
Glad you like it!
What are your target levels (dBA) for the mix position at a festival like this?
We do not target db levels at most events. As long as the sound system can cover the area, the volume level is appropriate and the sound quality is good, this is the level we will settle on. Fairs/festivals (where people move around a lot) usually don't have target db levels; though, concerts, where there are seating areas, all facing the stage, usually have target db levels.
Are you using passive speaker's?
The passive speakers for this event are the subs and monitors.
Thanks so much
what lights are those on the back of the stage?
I'm not sure what they are called. There was a separate company providing the lighting for this event.
Not enough base in open spaces from 100 ft distance.
Thanks for the comment. There was plenty of bass, however, the camera mic is not that good at picking up bass. In our later videos, we are using a shot-gun mic that does an exceptional job picking up bass.
Nice setup
Thank you.
Those subs should be at most 1/4 wavelength apart at their crossover freq. When they are spaced as far apart as they are, they interfere with each other and create a "power alley."
that's a little under 8 feet @ 140hz xover
The spacing between the cabinets will dictate at what frequency a power-alley will occur. The closer the cabinets, the less opportunity for a power-alleys. The spacing of the cabinets in this video are there to allow frequency coupling around ~50hz., which (due to the coupling), is heavily emphasizing 50hz out front. If the cabinets are too far apart (over ~16ft) the frequencies where a power-alley will form is much wider.
@@stageleftaudio ok fair at 50hz those speakers are within 1/4 wavelength so you are getting reinforcement, but they should be within a 1/4 wavelength all the way up to the crossover frequency, which around 140 hz is 8 feet. How do you deal with all cancelation in the 100-140 hz range?
Frequencies around the 100hz range and up are handled by the mid/high (top) cabinets... depending on the event and where we have the xover set.
Loved it ! Great job !
