I watched an old feller do this with a postcard maybe 50+ years ago and had completely forgotten about it until I watched your video. Wow, this is a great tip, thank you. Wish I had remembered this when I found my old boy scout knife last year sitting in a pile of rust in an old metal toolbox that I haven't used since the late 70's :)
Thanks a lot, this trick helped me open my old swiss army knife I found and as far I remember it's a from around '85 Victorinox. Now I'll clean it properly. Thank you again!
Sweet. I keep finding knives in my late dad's stuff and figure I can distribute them among family members, but I found two that were rusted shut. Your trick worked really well. the first knife, a Barlow with a wooden handle and rust on one side of the smaller of the two blades, opened right away. The other knife, a slim Office Knife, took longer and required a second piece of paper because the first sheet was getting battered, but it finally released a blade. Both blades were rusted on that one. I think with some cleaning both knives will be fine, which was much more than I expected. Thank you for such a simple tip! I'd rather clean the blades when they're outside the knife than when you can't even see them. :)
@simplemen55 The liquid still evaporates, that's why even if you don't use it, it still runs out... And two weeks is about average time for it to last full, less if you use it alot per day.
nature of the beast...they evaporate if your not using it often use a ranger band or piece of bicycle tubing as a rubber band to cover the lid and case so keep vapors in
I got a 1970s era case recently from a collector that was never used. I wanted to see what it looks like fully opened, but I can’t get the secondary or strait edge blades open. With the strait edge, there isn’t a tip for me to slide the paper under. What should I do for that?
My Dad passed away last week. I am going through his things and he left me a box of knives with my name on it. I inherited about 20-30 knives. 2 case buck knives in particular. I cleaned them and they’re amazing. The rest are like your size but they mean a lot to me.
Awesome! Friend of mine found a VERY old pocket knife on her property, and was gonna throw it out so I kept it. Could not get it open for nothing, until I just tried your trick, and it worked like a charm. Now to figure out how to clean it. Thanks!
you forgot...flashlights, gear, vlogs, tobacco, keychains, lighters, little baggies, fire making, wild edibles, freezedried food, unboxings, precious metals, etc...lol I cant even remember it all
the fluid evaporates because its a petrolium product, you pretty much cant stop it. usually when mine get empty i just shake it upside down and hit it in my palm and it usually gives me enough to do the job for a minute.
i found an old case in a ratchet box in mexico, i thought it was a fake at first, then it turned out to be legit, from 1985, it wasnt rusted shut, and the blades were still nice and hair shaving sharp.
Great tip man. I went and got an old multitool that I found in a dumpster, one of the blades was pretty much rusted solid. When I first found the knife, I tried jamming a screwdriver in the thumb slot, but that didnt work, and there wasnt enough of the blade showing to get a grip with pliers. So I thought I'd try this. On my first atempt the paper ripped, but after folding it four times, and giving it some "elbow grease" it worked like a charm. Nice one Jeff. Rust removal vid next please.
i think rusty knives is how people get into knives lol. find a old rusty knife at car boot and then expand on that lol. thanks for the tip. got alot of old knives lol
@cutlerylover A length of paracord sometimes works if you drag it in the groove the blade rests in, try to get it to catch on the tip of the blade. It's a bit stronger than paper so it'll work on really sharp blades. I'd like that review of the Byrd Wings as well, it's legal carry over here, U.K. I don't like serrations normally but on a two bladed knife I might come to like them. They look scalloped enough to cut rather than snag on stuff.
awesome. I will be waiting lol. btw I just bought a Leatherman Micra because of the good things you said about it. It is very nice. Thank you for all of your knife advice lol
I have a NEW pocket knife that requires you to use pliers. It looks like the spring is too stiff, or the blade's tang is too long, and stops when you open partially. If I could get it apart, I could just grind the corner of the tang, so it would work right. Al the other parts open easily.
Actually, ive got an old knife that has been rusted closed. or at least i think its rusted. its a really old backlocking knife where the locking lever doesnt seem to want to budge.
Got a wicked Swiss army knife off a friend about 8 years ago. It was a birthday present; she gave me it in the school cafeteria :D Got some really fun memories of that day feeling nervous as hell trying to hide it but also showing it off to people on the sly :D
Jeff, will you do another shooting video? I really liked the old shooting videos you did! Would like to see you do some shooting again :) Maybe redo the CCW drill and so forth to see if you can do it faster and how its diffrent now that you have dropped alot of weight! Also id like to see you shoot the mossber with pistol grip with one hand now ;) I think it will move you bit more than last time.
Nice to see you here :) No S&W reviews, but if you can enjoy one of their folders trust me stick around lots of nice knives that will blow you away but it might get addictive and hurt your wallet, lol...If you ever have $60 to spend on a knife get a spyderco delica 4, youll never pick your S&W back up...
I let rest my Swiss knife what won’t open in boiling water for two minutes and it did open fine after. Just put it under cold water to not burn yourself before handling it. Use Qtip and toothpaste to clean the dirty area.
@cutlerylover Great tip! I happen to have some old Sheffield penknives that happen to be getting a little rusted up and I may give them a go with this tip! Just out of curiosity; what is your view on slipjoints? Do you prefer locking blades over them because of safety issues or do you prefer them for their historic value? There's no wrong answer, I'm just curious of your opinion. Thank you. JW9.

I found a knife in a tackle box from my dad's shed from like 20 years ago and it's completely rusted beyond any repair or opening. It's just completely destroyed and there's no way to open it at all. :) Believe me.
Wow never would have thought of that. Cool deal. Had an Old Timer that my gramps gave me that I had to open with needle noses and like you said marred the blade. On a side note. I didn't look hard but have you done a review of the S&W CK5TBS? I love it.

What a neat trick! Saved my nails while trying to clean a pair of old knives. Thanks for posting

Great tip, my grand father passed and I recently found about 10 old folding knives. I was killing my ails getting some open.
Knife question. I have a few folding knifes that will not close how do u fix that
Using this technique on an antique knife I just inherited. Thank you!
sure no problem good luck with it

Before watching the video I am going to say with your teeth. - SG

I've used this trick before - and it works. Thanks for posting this trick for others to see. :)
After watching this I ran to the drawer that I knew had a knife I couldn't open in it, and this worked successfully.
This, boys and girls, is called leverage. Great tip!

That paper trick works really well, thanks so much!
This video helped me show much, my knife wouldn't move until I did this trick. Thanks for sharing.

you should review some OLD HICKORY KNIVES
i found an old case in a ratchet box in mexico, i thought it was a fake at first, then it turned out to be legit, from 1985, it wasnt rusted shut, and the blades were still nice and hair shaving sharp.
This was amazing advice! You helped a man out ❤

Ballistol is non toxic and works similarly to penetrate/dissolve.
Pb Blaster or Lucas tool box buddy works great too.
The really thin wires that are used to close bread bags work well also
But will it work with automatic openers, Jeff??
i think rusty knives is how people get into knives lol. find a old rusty knife at car boot and then expand on that lol. thanks for the tip. got alot of old knives lol
I'm restoring my grandfather's knives and now I can't go back!

awesome. I will be waiting lol. btw I just bought a Leatherman Micra because of the good things you said about it. It is very nice. Thank you for all of your knife advice lol
That's the best way to open the fork on the hobo. Thanks for sharing!
oh, and great vid, sweet tips.
will that method work with when trying to open a stuck sliding door?
DAMN IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITT!!!!! Haha love the videos jeff, keep being you, life is good.
What is the 2nd blade you show? Reminds me of the Spyderco Byrd series, great tip btw! Thanks for sharing
Can you post a video about restoring a really rusted out knife?

sure now that I rekindled my interest!

Hahahaha, the tags are always so funny!
That might ruin the scales if the knife had bone, plastic, or wooden scales. Petrol/Gasoline can definitely damage plastics though.
Awesome tip!
Cool stuff
my back froze when you used your thumbnail like that! :-P
I actually had just found this out a few weeks ago.
Thanks for the info, bro.
