It is Halloween Night - Monday 31 October 2016 as I type this comment, and I am watching this wonderful illusion. We lost Paul Daniels on 17 March 2016. We remember him this Halloween Night, with one of his best illusions which caused a lot of uproar back on Halloween Night - Saturday 31 October 1987 on BBC One. Paul Daniels, one of the best magicians ever. RIP.
I remember watching this on live TV when I was a wee girl - I thought he was dead at the end and I had a panic and wouldn't go to bed. So I was allowed to stay up for a little bit longer (I'm in Scotland - Sportscene was on next!) and I was ever so relieved (and finally agreed to go to bed) when he turned up swinging on the Iron Maiden after the end of the next programme. One of my earliest memories - trauma by Paul Daniels!! :)
Remember watching this live on Halloween, BBC1, which back then was quite the novelty for non-news programmes (easy tiger, I'm not frackin' ancient or summat!). It was the so-called pre-recorded VT tacked on the end (not included here, unfortunately) that really sold it. Paul Daniels: The Ringo Starr of magicians - he's an easy target to take the piss out off but a damn sight better and more talented than history records.
I was quite young when this was broadcast and wasn't totally sure he wasn't dead until I met him a few years later! The part after the news where he said that he hoped we "enjoyed that ILLUSION" was pre-recorded, so that didn't really convince me that he was okay. There were a lot of children who didn't sleep much that night!
classic illusion...it did cause controversy with the bbc at the time,,31 oct 1987...because he faked his death...I think it was just a postmodern idea they tried out cos it was meant to be a macabre show anyway... but although Daniels defended it in interviews I remember reading that John fisher, the legendary producer, claimed it got them in hot water!!...especially as Noel Edmonds show got cancelled over a tragic death. But John fisher left and Daniels carried on...in a way Fisher 'killed' paul daniels..whom he had made a star , in his last show as producer. Daniels magic show changed a lot when Fisher left imho. Daniels was brilliant and ofcourse did another show where the got burned at the stake in 1988, and came back to life to counter any more controversy. this period was a golden age of magic on tv!!!
Okay. Just checking. I love Paul Daniel's work normally. He's an expert craftsman. But in this one, I guess, I never felt he was in danger, especially when no one (even the audience) reacts like a man has just been punctured to death. Everyone is so peacefully calm on the screen. So I wasn't sure what the audience was "witnessing" or did they know he was going to do 4 or more tricks after this one. See what I mean?
cool i remember this as a kid though back then it wasnt as i was a kid the programme ended when the door slammed and you didnt find out he was ok till after the ten o clock news. paul daniels is a legend
Can anyone help not go mad here? I clearly remember this trick and at the end one of the guys in black robes turned around and it was Paul. I remember this so much but it didn't seem to have happened at all.
Was that the year after? I seem to remember him doing a trick where he was burnt at the stake and then appeared afterwards as one of the cowled figures. Can't find any footage though.
i can remember when me and my sister used to watch this when we were small. Sitting infront of the television on the floor, and our mum telling us not to sit so close to the tv because we will damage our eyes. Damaged our eyes but it was worth it.
I remember watching this as a kid & actually thinking it was real !?! As I recall, so did quite a few other people & Paul Daniels was slated in the papers the day after. Ah well, it was the 80s & we were all a bit more innocent back then :-)
Quite possibly the scariest illusion ever! I must have been about... seven or thereabouts when this was on. My parents shielded me from the worst, and luckily my grandmother's TV was on the blink.
I beleive Houdini did do a Maiden torture cabin escape. At least it sais so in his book. Then againPaul didn't say Houdini hadn't done it, just that he would love it.
@Oblivi0usbyme That's his style. You're right it's not always as entertaining, but it's different and sometimes I enjoy his thoroughness in explaining the trick. I guess it's to satisfy the skeptics among us.
@123milkdud No, it was an illusion, but they didn't tell the audience or the TV viewers at home that until later. The show received the highest ever number of complaints to the broadcast authority
Does anyone have any footage from his second halloween special in 88? I've found the full episode of the 87 on another video site ( daily??? lol) quality not the issue but as a huge PD fan would love to see the second one again
Wow, I remember this. We all thought he was dead..for a while. Shame you don't have the bit that was shown later when he revealed it was a joke, a rather sick joke I thought.
Um...I'm not sure I "get it"...meaning, how does this play to a live audience? Is this the last trick in his act or do the lights go down and rise on him in another "scene". I get the surprise ending, but it seems so fake in a way, because if he was really injured (or worse) everyone in his team would respond...but they don't. So, he's all right, there's no surprise from his crew. Has anyone seen this live?
The only explanation has to be is that as soon as the door is closed on him and Paul says don't move to anyone, he comes loose from his straps which are fake and is able to move somehow to the bit on the right hand side. I know from watching illusions up close that there is more room in that right hand side of the cabinet for someone to slip into than appears on screen, so when the door of spikes slams in they miss Paul who is hidden in the far right of the cabinet, small space, but just enough. The foot coming through the paper of the door is the sign to who is controlling the mechanism that Paul is safe and it is time to slam the door with a secret button or pull. The foot through the paper is easily achieved mechanically. So that is what I think, as by looking at the trick over and over again, what are the other options?
i remember that trick amile smith is right that is what was supose to happen but i tryed that new trick and it went wrong i was at nere ecsape if you look closely you will see a rip in the screen that was my foot but it happend so fast i had five spikes in my chest they took me out and then all i remeber is seeing five holes than i past out i woke up the next day they sowd the wounds shut and i was sower
I don't remember this one - might have been before my time. I do have a vague memory of a trick that involved a car getting crushed or something. It was outdoors in a scrap yard I think, and there was the same "...did he escape?" moment, but they resolved it far quicker. After about five seconds, the TV camera turned to show him stood on top of another vehicle, glass of champagne already in his hand. 😁
That sounds like the giant concrete dominoes one, with Jon Pertwee narrating, although it.could have been the racetrack one with Mike Smith witnessing.
@@Schnorbs I remember the racetrack one. As far as I recall, Paul Daniels was supposedly going to escape from a wooden box before the racecar did a lap or something, we saw him getting chained up and tied in a sack, and there was a flag he could poke through the box as a distress signal if needed. The flag was raised just before the car hit the box and smashed it to smithereens. Mike Smith at first looked shocked and horrified, then confused when he realised there was no body among the debris. When the car came to a stop, the driver got out and took off his helmet, revealing himself as Paul Daniels.
Paul Daniels like Derren Brown was an ILLUSIONIST - what don't you get? Magic is fake. Magic is not real. People on here seem to be really dumb. Magic is all about fakery. "Honest about my dishonesty" is what Derren would say. So what is your problem?
Hi, as you can see this uploader of this clip has seen to make an enemy of me, as I tried to point out I was trying to explain how this trick was done. He has threatened to block me, just because I explained how it is possible this trick was done. He says he has copyright clearance for uploading this clip, which I doubt. We can now see what kind of person this M Riley Junior is and it is not a pleasant human being.
I’m too young to remember this, but he was an absolute genius for getting the whole of the UK to believe he had died.

I remember this scene like a fever dream as I was only 5 when I watched it. Had no idea it was actually a setup until this very day. Crazy.
Like him or loathe him, he was a great magician in the day.

I wasn’t allowed to stay up so I was quite traumatised by it 😂 Still gets to me now. I liked it. Not a lot, but I liked it.
I had a very similiar memory
@@edz :)
I remember watching it . And sportscene too 👍🏻
We thought he'd jossed it then, and was relieved when he hadn't. Very sad day today. RIP Paul Daniels :(

It's great to see this again after all this time. I was 10, and watched this on a black and white portable in my bedroom.

Yeah, a few hushed gasps would have sold it
@@Butlinsgvn6 nah if you where in that audience you'd be full of WTF vibes standing still wandering what on earth have I just witnessed

The rattle of chains on Halloween are wonderful indeed!
Oh my god I remember watching this when I was 8 and it scared the crap out of me! Great to see it again!
At the end of the credits there's little bit where a "pre recorded" Paul pops up and gives a wink to the camera.
I was a young teenager when I saw this live on TV even thou it was not actually live. The BBC got quite a few complaints.

At the end of the show after the credits. Paul daniels alive says happy Halloween.

Apparently anne robinson was in the audience that night and she refused to speak to paul after that night
@123milkdud No, it was an illusion, but they didn't tell the audience or the TV viewers at home that until later. The show received the highest ever number of complaints to the broadcast authority
Iron Maiden?
EXCELLENT!
Paul’s dead...... bogus!
@tightropetomg
It didn't help that it came a few months after a member of the public had been killed rehearsing a stunt for the Noel Edmonds show.
They're now on.
Rip Mr Daniels
That was Paul at his very best
I think having the credits at the end kind of ruins the 'Paul Is Dead' thing. Should have just stopped with the black screen
he dident die, he appeared later on and said he was fine
RIP Paul Daniels

Whatever happened to Phil Cool and Wizbit?!
I remember watching this when it was first shown....I thought he'd died.A great magic trick but a decent magician
why doesn't the bbc release the paul daniels series on DVD ? and that other major magician before him the Nixon fella?
What year was this?
Does anyone have any footage from his second halloween special in 88? I've found the full episode of the 87 on another video site ( daily??? lol) quality not the issue but as a huge PD fan would love to see the second one again

Hi Stephen funny enough I've been trying to find the '87 special!
I have the '88 Halloween show on dvd - (transferred from vhs)
There was one he did when he got flattened by giant concrete dominos style slabs. He'd been grabbed by some guys in dark cloaks. Very odd.
I was 11 years old when watching this - I remember vividly the black screen and running downstairs to tell my parents Paul Daniels had died.
did he died?
Wow, I remember this. We all thought he was dead..for a while. Shame you don't have the bit that was shown later when he revealed it was a joke, a rather sick joke I thought.
they makers of the SAW films should do something like this
where's bruce dickinson, steeve harris, where is dave murray, there's adrian smith, where's nicko mc brain and where the hell is Janick gers.
i might be wrong but i think valentino was the masked magician i maybe wrong tho

Iron Maiden! Great band!
Paul is dead, miss him miss him miss him... Joking aside, was I the only one totally disappointed when he would emerge alive?
I forget when this aired on YTV but I actually thought he died and was really distraught... I think I was 11?

You can't claim the moral high ground here, since you yourself have uploaded a BBC copyrighted clip.

Paul Daniels is dead and where is the proof of that?
Always liked watching Paul Daniels, couldn’t figure out how he got a fit bird like Debbie to go out with him, must be magic.

It was live on a TV in front of live audience for Halloween so its not a part of his regular act.
Get some glasses??
I'll be uploading the full end credits in the next few weeks.

This sucks no answers we didn't even see if he survived or not....
I know who he is,but still no-one knows him by his real name.
