  • How do you get dyslexia accommodations for a dyslexic child in school? Find information in this video and at our website, www.dyslexiaconnect.com .
If your child is dyslexic, or you think that they may be dyslexic, you may wish to seek accommodations for them at school. Accommodations for dyslexia can include additional time on tests and written assignments, more time for exams, and less assigned homework. If your child is dyslexic, the first step that you will want to take is to investigate dyslexia tutoring programs. A dyslexia tutor who is trained in Orton-Gillingham or one of the other well known dyslexia tutoring methods will be able to provide the one-on-one help a dyslexic child needs to make progress with their reading, spelling and comprehension. You can check out our online dyslexia tutoring program at our website.
The first step in seeking accommodations for dyslexia in school is to request an evaluation for learning disabilities. Typically, if a parent requests this, the school will set it up and the testing will occur within a few months. There are some complications that you may face during this process. First of all, you may be told that your school does not acknowledge dyslexia as a real diagnosis, or that they do not believe that dyslexia is a real learning disability. You may also find that the school does not wish to use the term "dyslexia" at all. If this is the case, you will need to seek out an official diagnosis from a doctor or psychiatrist. An official dyslexia diagnosis will give you the evidence you need to seek accommodations in such a case. To find a provider who performs official dyslexia evaluations, try checking with the International Dyslexia Association. You can also contact us, and we can point you in the right direction.
If the school agrees to the evaluation, but the results come back showing that the child does not have any learning difficulties or disabilities, but you know that something is wrong, you may still need to get an official dyslexia diagnosis. The diagnosis will help you pursue accommodations, even if the school evaluation shows that the child does not have any learning difficulties.
Please feel free to post questions and comments. We love to hear from you!

Thank you.. this is so informative.. My 8 yr old granddaughter has had trouble in school and has even been held back in kindergarten.. The teachers kept saying she had ADHD and needed to be medicated but when my daughter took her to her pediatrician he didn't think so.. I was curious about dyslexia so I googled it and of course most of the symptoms she had were typical.. I told my daughter to look it up since she studies with her two hours a night, she had it down pat but the next day she brought home the test paper she had missed 5 out of 8 spelling words.! So that's where we are now.. I have watched so many videos on the subject until my head was spinning but now I can see a course of action, thanks to you.. My daughter emailed her teacher this morning asking if she could be tested at school and what accommodation do they have for tutoring.. I know they have tudors but I don't know if they are specifically for Dyslexia.... this information is wonderful..!

You're welcome, Pam! Thank you for watching. I'm glad that you find the information helpful! Regarding tutoring for your granddaughter, I strongly recommend seeking out a tutor who is trained in the Orton-Gillingham Method, or one of the closely related methods to Orton-Gillingham. This will assure that she is getting the sort of instruction she needs. If your daughter is interested in online tutoring, you can find information about our online tutoring program here: www.dyslexiaconnect.com/tutoring/ .

Jordan, thanks for your comment. You should be encouraged, because there are actually lots and lots of successful people who have dyslexia! So, you should not worry about an employer overlooking you, because of dyslexia. Many employers appreciate the many talents that their employees who have dyslexia bring to their companies. You may want to reach out to the International Dyslexia Association, and see if there are any dyslexia support groups in your area. dyslexiaida.org/ . Here is a link that discusses some of the many famous individuals who have dyslexia. www.understood.org/en/learning-attention-issues/personal-stories/famous-people/success-stories-celebrities-with-dyslexia-adhd-and-dyscalculia .
