NYC streamlined steam locomotive, 20th Century Limited

- English: Speaking of streamlined steam locomotives, C53, C55 streamlined style, Pasina shape of South Manchurian Railway, and British Mallard number, but in the New York / Central railroad which existed in the United States, a train called the 20th century express is called a large streamlined Hudson aircraft was towing. It looks like a locomotive that seems to appear in science fiction movies in the 50's. The 20th century express is currently abolished, but Amtrak's train runs the same route
The fact that no NYC hudsons were saved is criminal
Yes, but so many incredible things have been destroyed at that time, in the name of modernity
I'm still pissed about that. Whenever I think about it, my day gets worse.
That is an absolute fact.
Especially for what is essentially the "Concorde of the rails"
The same thing happened for the VR's Streamlined S class steam locomotives in Australia.
Who else thinks there should be a restored Dreyfuss Hudson?
there aren't any hudsons to restore... but there's a tender from a j1e
It's better to go back in time to save one of the J-3s that were scrapped

I wish I was around back when steam trains were all there was on the tracks. I love the sound of a steam locomotive whistle.
^^
Same, they were actually still more common the diesel until I think the 50s
It's a shame how there's barely or no footage of decommissioned and scraped trains
Yeah i do miss steam trains, but we will eventually run out of coal for these steam locos and meanwhile diesel uses solar which has alot of reserves
Same that would be awesome to see steam trains running around back then
Shame that none of these engines exist anymore. They would've have made for great excursion runners!
Most definitely!
Tell me about it
😢 I agree

1:23 These guys are willing to die just to get that perfect shot
I thought the same, until my friend Chris pointed out this footage is reversed. Look on the left hand side and you will see that human moving in a "reversed" motion.
But after thinking about it, that would mean something was pulling it on the other end of the cars? So I don't think you can confirm this was reversed footage since we can't see the other end.
darthclide it was reversed you can see the steam going in instead of out
@@tracycarifa5740 You can see the steam pulling back into the sides
@@darthclide Steam engines can go backwards too.
How did the New York Central went from having the train of tomorrow, to trains of last-week today?
Evan Hizon Penn Central started the demolition and Amtrak finished it.
By the 1950s, the federal government heavily subsidized airplane travel at the expense of railroads. By the 1960s, the passenger service was a huge money loser.
My dad worked for the NYC from 1931-35 and after being a hostler in Croton he got on the extra board as an engineer. He was going into the Naval Reserve and for his last day he got to run the 20th Century from Albany to Syracuse, with the regular engineer to keep him on schedule; because if you were 2 minutes late it was very serious, unless there was some mechanical defect. After the war when he finished college he went back to the NYC in the Public Affairs department making movies, and things like that. He got to ride the 20th Century many times to talk to passengers and do PR work on the train.
Wow What a wonderful memory!
Very fortunate man to have that experience with a magnificent locomotive 🚂.

I am sad that there is no dreyfuss Hudson's left imagine one going down the rails at 100 miles per hour
I wish we still had steam Locomotives running period, I would love to see them .
@@mattjohnston7686 There are a lot! Just on heritage railways now. Just about every country I can think of has at least one.
While we wanted them some people wanted something more😑
@@metalgear6531 844 never retired from the Union Pacific roster
NYC Mohawk looks like a somewhat Hudson-type but image it could be convert it into a 4-6-4 Hudson and be around today.
0:31 when your class starts in 5 minutes...
More like 1 min and 50 seconds, and you also have a heavy bag on you.
More like when class starts in 30 seconds
It was called The 20th Century Limited, never the 20th century express.
Damn right! Good call.
Should have been saved
Google translate is worthless. the meaning of words is "lost in translation" as soon as you press the translate button .It honestly just makes people look stupid...
limited cause it had a limit to service see what I did there
Empire State Express would have made more sense to preserve since this service is called the 20th Century Limited for a reason. It ran from 1902 to 1967, not nonstop of course, the locomotive and rolling stock (coaches/wagons) changed a bit over those 65 years.
I rode on the 20th Century Limited from Chicago to NYC in 1950 when it was pulled by EMD E8s. I'll never forget it. What a luxurious, comfortable ride it was.
Wow! I wish I could’ve done the same.
It is very rare to find videos of streamlined locos in action like this one.I give this a thumbs up!
unfortunately these audios are dubbed, some clips of the video have it's original audio
@@daniko4447Is the one at 0:30 dubbed audio or original?
@@solidaridadjusticia1438 Nope. The audio is from NYC Hudson 5405, you can find an audio recording of it on YT and it's listed on a playlist I created
@@daniko4447 Your wording has me a little bit confused is it audio from another hudson?

Thanks for the footage of the Commodore Vanderbilt at the start of the video. I think that it rivals the Dreyfuss design for aesthetic impact.
0:31 When your late and you are a engineer on the 20th century limited

Once construction is done on the new T1 Duplex, I think the next steam locomotive rebuild project should be one of these beauties
Or maybe an NYC L4a Mohawk?
Or a Niagara?
there's already a mohawk i think
Let’s hope they do
I can actually imagine a streamlined hudson in the preservation Era, but I can also imagine a regular J3A hudson
ym the freight version of it?
edit: unstreamlined
1:49 when my mom tells me to wake up for school and I am 20 minutes late
0:41 when you need to go to the toilet at school very quickly
0:31-0:47 I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Amtrak go that fast!
you've never seen the Blue Waters then
@Aiden Andrews *1971
You didn't see Connor go fast
Thanks. I think this is the best streamlined design for any steam locomotive. The Empire State Express design, without the "Roman helmet" nose fin, just doesn't do it for me. I still think it's criminal that not one of the 275 magnificent J-series Hudsons that were built was preserved.
None of the New York Central Hudson's are preserved though 😭
Somebody must make a new build some day. It's such a shane these and the Niagras never got preserved.
@@Meengineer100 Steam locos were worth a lot of money as scrap in those days, so it took a magnanimous corporation to forego scrapping in favor of donating for display. RED CHINA was building new steam locos, at hundreds of thousands of dollars each, long after we dieselized. Thank goodness we have as much footage on film to video transfer as we do! (I just wish there wasn't as much rampant duplication---under different labels---as there is: I had as many as five of the same company promo films of some of them.)
@@Meengineer100 I think the New York Central Hudson's are scrapped.
Yeah, thank heavens we have this stunning footage to give us an idea of what they were like. Americans do have the potential to new build lost locos like these though, just need someone to do it. ;)
Such gorgeous machines. Just look at them go.
What a sight this must have been
I wish I could've seen these running on real life.
Same here if they just where put in to a museum I would be more than happy.
It's cool to think that I used to live in the state that these beasts could be seen in!
There are still a lot you can see in operation and you can also ride behind most of them: Milwaukee 261, NKP 765, SP 4449, UP 844, 3985 and 4014, PM 1225, the list goes on and one. Yes, some fan favorites like the NYC 4-6-4's are not there, but there is still plenty to choose from.
I've heard attempts have been made to create a replica hudson but they have stalled one way or another, I hope a replica is built
Respect to the cameraman. 1:24
Although the shot is really risky, the entire clip is basically played in reverse to achieve the “impossible” shot.
Pay attention to the smoke and the man next to the Hudson walking around backwards. It’s evidence that the clip was reversed.

a ticket on the 20th Century Limited cost a fortune, even in the 30s. Well according to the PRR fares on the Broadway Limited in 1956 a Bedroom was $76.21 which is almost $650 now. I'm sure the 20th Century was more, and the Super Chief was even worse. in 1968 a Super Chief base fare from Chicago to LA was $89.84 add the Room fee of 23.90 its over $100 (not counting the $7.50 extra fare surcharge). that's nearly $1000 today. No wonder less and less people took the train. who the hell could afford them other then the rich?
Kevin Howard this train was for the elite
Those are Luxury trains you're talking about, of course they'll be expensive. Train traveling became unpopular because Air travel became faster and cheaper?? Also more people were traveling by cars and the Government supported it
Thank you for this! I've always been a big fan of the 20th Century.
The j3a is my favorite locomotive

I rode the 20th Century Limited in steam loco days. Walked the Red Carpet too. Loco's scooped water on the fly in some places.
Espectacular !!!...Greetings from Chile
I'm a PRR and CRRNJ fan mostly, but I do not turn my nose up at other roads, especially where the 20th. Is concerned. It was like a live Art Deco poster!! #YouGoGirl!!
Same here. I got into the NYC recently but I diss on them for not saving any one of the steam locomotives besides the two Mohawks like 3001 still around.
We have a working Hudson here in Calgary. Unfortunately it is hidden away in the CPR Ogden yards. It was put in storage by a CEO named Hunter Harris. It was so magnificent to see running. Typical CPR apparently had to cut costs to make more money. So history was stored away.
Hunter Harrison is dead now.
@@brianfalzon6739 Yes he is. He had left CPR prior to his death.
These Hudson were some good and fast steam locomotives but shame all of them were scraped 🚂😔💔
One is in a meuseam
what is it's road number? is it actually a tender or a very similar train?
If we had the money I'd suggest going back in time to the 1950s to buy one but even then that Alfred Pearlman dude wouldn't give a crap since he ordered every steam locomotive scrapped
Are we able to rebuild the Spartan helmet design New York Hudson Steam Locomotive? Because that engine looks capable of being fully on service with modern passenger trains in america
Car fans: TRAINS SUCK! THEY ARE SLOW, EXPENSIVE, AND ALWAYS LATE!!!!!!!!
Rail fans: I think you may need to rethink yourselves.
Yup true indeed trains are faster
When you realize the swat force came in. 0:31
Such a beauty
Let there be the birth of a new era: the new glory days of steam and railroading!!! This honestly would've made a perfect episode of Quantum Leap: Revival of the Hudson.
0:40 Christ that engineer is hauling ass. For some reason, I feel like that's faster than Mallard, there's no way that that thing ISN'T going above 130 mph.
If the track was good it could have beaten Mallard easily due to a huge firebox
@@jakesamson76 Exactly. It's honestly surprising that there weren't any recorded speeds of Hudson's doing stuff like that.
Yeah he's really moving! But remember that the highest "legal" speed limit on the Railroad was only 85, mostly in the East. I've read many stories by Engine Crews of late running speeds as high as 115. I don't think the track was safe for anything faster.
Super Hudsons were known for their impressive speeds and power. Their Scullin Disc drivers and Roller bearings allowed them to travel at 90 miles per hour with the large consists such as the 20th Century Limited. And they were mostly on time with their schedules. It’s a shame. Amtrak, NYC’s “successor” uses Diesel power which was presumed to excel Steam power, and Steam power always proves to be superior.
@@b3j8 it depends on the tracks, the tracks have to be the straightest possible
Nice video dude i'm love NYC Hudson
1:29 I keep seeing those steam jets come out from the cylinders on steam locomotives. What is the purpose of it jetting out like that?
Those are the cylinder cocks activated, they release condense from the cylinders
It’s called cylender cocks, they are used when trains start moving to help clear any debris out of the pistons
2:38 the best part
0:28 Where did you get this footage? on DVD?
i was born too late for steam, still regret it
Same here, I wasn't around in the 1930s and 40s but I've spoken to those who were actually around then.
I’m going to build one when I grow up
Absolutely disgraceful and shameful 😢😮
The sounds of the Mercury’s whistle at 0:18 and the Dreyfuss Hudson pulling into the station at 1:20 almost sound like some of the railroad sounds you hear in “I Love Toy Trains”.

"I'm bang on time, I'm bang on time, I'm bang on time, I'm bang on time..."
0.31 "Boss, wez late!"
I know it sucks that the NYC flunked in preservation especially with the Hudsons there are a few steam locomotives from the railroad left like the 3001 Mohawk which in turn pulled the 20th Century Limited alongside the J-3a Hudsons and a few switchers around
1:11 Connor from Thomas & Friends is based on the NYC Hudson after all. 😊
fun fact the t1 trust(before they were called that)was going to build NYC Hudson replica but it was way to expensive so instead they were gonna make a PRR T1 replica
This is weird a little because the t1 is much bigger than a nyc j1 hudson so why is the hudson more expensive
I heard the NYC Hudson lacks blueprints
And everyone, this is no joke, every single train in this video is in pieces 😣

There must be a lot of people around who as children rode behind these locos. Was the track in such good condition that at 100 mph you got a smooth ride, or would the white tablecloth in the dining car be a morass of spilled coffee, soup and other items that missed the mouth, when dining at speed?

My grandfather was a locomotive engineer and he drove the Empire State Express, streamlined locomotive in the video. I still have his Ball watch.
I was born in 1948. When I was a kid in the 50s my grandfather used to take me down to watch the trains as we lived near the Hudson River. By then the Century was pulled by diesel locomotives but on a few occasions I saw the Empire State Express pulled by steam power. I didn’t see a lot of steam but I was just a little kid and you never forget standing next to a steam engine drive wheel.
