That’s just asuka in general, and there’s plenty anyone can do vs el, from the looks of it gobou just hasn’t taken any time to learn her.
Asuka is a really momentum-based character. If he gets going that’s not much you can do, so you have to hope for him to mess up or to somehow break his endless spam of cubes. He doesn’t do well up-close so once Elphelt catches him slipping it’s basically over

@@popeneiad7968To elaborate, Asuka is momentum-based because of his resources and lack of defensive options. If you get hit, you:
- have to get the opponent off of you with your average normals, burst, or YRC most of the time
- need to recover however much mana you lost due to the combo that you just ate.

Deliberate posts to summon the "MI guy," very little talk regarding the actual video, and the typical Asuka haters. This comment section has really gone downhill lately...
Regarding the statements made by the users who essentially said that Gobou "doesn't know the Elphelt match-up," Gobou played Elphelt for 2 days and completely figured the character out - like most people within that time period. Also, ばある is a very strong player from Asia, and they use Asuka as a sub character; meaning, they know how to fight the character fairly well. Further, did you know that Gobou said that Asuka has a harder time dealing with aerial attacks than any other character in this game? A character with a 6P like BedMan? Can easily swat a character above them away - Asuka, not so much. You also have to take into consideration the network latency - even if you can counter the rekka and grenade setups perfectly in training mode, that will not equate to the same thing happening online.
Furthermore, Gobou typically annihilates Elphelt players because many seem to just rush, rush, and rush without much of a game plan - which can be incredibly unsafe against a character like Asuka. Although, I haven't fully watched this particular video, I know how Gobou performs vs. this character, and it usually is not pretty for the opponent. With that being said, for those who said, "There are a lot of things characters could do vs. Elphelt" - what does Asuka have that works well against the rekka that is specific to the character? I don't want to hear comments like "use Deflect Shield, IBFD, FD, air grab," etc, as those are system mechanics. Ice Spike can be baited or grabbed, and if you miss and get counter-hit by the Elphelt player, then good luck.
Moreover, I know Asuka has the highest defense modifier in the game when the character has Mana, and Elphelt's rekka does not inflict much damage; but you have to understand that when the Asuka player gets hit by this rekka over and over, not only are you taking damage, but you're also losing your ability to defend yourself - take enough damage, and you won't be able to cast spells - and if you can't chant, you can't win.
In conclusion, I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but from reading these comments regarding this match-up, it's pretty clear that even though hindsight is 20/20, many people don't seem to be cognizant that they are applying that to these particular sets. It may seem like you would have reacted way faster, done something differently, and things may appear to be in slow motion for you - but I highly doubt any of you would have performed better than Gobou, or even at the same level vs. Baaru. Reacting to the rekka 100% of the time is not always possible, and I've seen Gobou, FAB, and Baaru miss their chance to stop the rekka setup, then get CH trying to defend against it, or struggle to get the character off of them when the Elphelt player has meter or Burst gauge - and I doubt Baaru doesn't know the Elphelt match-up (since they play the character and mained her in Xrd), and I know that FAB and Gobou are not bad players... By saying things like, "There are a lot of things characters could do vs. Elphelt" - you are engaging in the fallacy *Dicto simpliciter* (a sweeping statement and expecting it to be true of every specific case) - just because you know other characters have counterplay for just about everything Elphelt has/the rekka, doesn't mean you can apply it to every character in the game. To me, it seems like some are assuming that just because Elphelt is a weak character and Asuka is top tier, that Elphelt should have a 1:9 disadvantage against him. If it were that simple, then Nago would get destroyed by Asuka - as on paper, it should be that way - but we know, GG MUs hardly ever work like they do on paper...

Im not a gg player but for some reason...... tthis asuka character seems pretty broken from 5:20 to 5:33 does 55% dmg then he locked the character down in a block strong for 20 seconds
He is really strong but he is really execution heavy. And on top of that you have to factor in that his spells are random. So yes he can do these crazy things like do 55% and crazy block strings, but if you can’t get the right spells in the right moments, you then these aren’t possible. And as an extra layer you have to actually manage his mana. So in this match the Asuka player is doing a lot more than what it may look like on the surface.
Also from what I have seen, he can really struggle to get you off him when you put a lot of pressure on him so he has that as a major flaw.

Gobou just going nuts with Asuka is impressive as all hell but the fact that the character is able to lock down the game that completely is just kinda gross, Asuka should probably be nerfed
In all fairness, you're not really seeing the average player do this, it wouldn't be too fair to nerf the character again because a top player looks scary with it. I'd get it if normal tower players were pulling this, but this is exclusive to high-level players. The first nerfs were warranted, but I think further nerfs would just be out of fear more than anything.

Elphelt is a pretty weird matchup for asuka, I assume gobou is gonna perform like usual at it once the matchup is figured out a little more
Yeah i like stive but im not sure what Arcsys was thinking when adding characters like Happy Choas or Asuka. They break the game. Not just cause they are strong its just that their entire gameplan is Anti strive.
I know people say that asuka and Happy Chaos are high skill/execution heavy charaters and that's why they are so good but the fact that once you learn them you just win is absolute garbage. HC has dominated evo almost since his release and i really do feel like all the system stuff they added was to try and mitigate those characters. Full screen bursts and a advantage wallbreak without meter cause the devs know that in order to stay alive and not chip out you need tension blocking.
It's also insane that the game has suffered from "everyone does too much damage" from day one and then they add wild assault on top...
I feel like I stopped playing due to the network errors, but I'd be lying if I said that HC existing did not factor into it at all. As an I-no main, HC has been particularly painful.
The thing with Asuka (and after the recent nerfs chaos too) is that he just doesn't "just win" once you learn him.
Gobou is the only Asuka we've seen perform at this level and it's about in line with what Gobou has been doing on any character he touched.
He has been cooking with GL back when everyone was sure he was a mediocre character at best and with Zato very recently after the nerfs and I don't see this being any different on other chars.
If Asuka was this gamebreaking #1 Char like Season 2 Happy Chaos people, especially top players, would be flocking to the character like no tomorrow and also win or at the very least compete in a lot of tourneys, which hasn't happened to a noticeable degree.
Surprisingly we've actually seen a few players like tene or leffen pick up Asuka to enjoy the Tier 0 heaven but unsurprisingly most pro players that pick up Asuka to play a top tier drop him just as fast because he's just not a top tier.
This mostly boils down to many other characters just being better than Asuka, since S3 just has a lot to offer.
And said better characters are naturally easier in execution as well so playing Asuka to have a competitive advantage makes no sense in the first place.
That's what I'm saying. "Average players aren't doing this so it's fine", okay but as soon as a good player picks him up he's a straight up better character than the others. That's not fun.
@@guts2630 No he is not, thats the thing. Even at a very high-level asuka usually doesn't have extraordinary performance compared to the average top or even high tier, he is rarely seen in larger tourneys. Frosty Faustings was a pretty good example of that.
In the entire top 48 of Frosty Faustings there were a grand total of 0 Asuka players, including secondaries even tho there were a few top Asukas in pools.
