I think I got some traditional taste. My top 10 includes the Beatles, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, etc but I have to work Starfish in. The album sounds like it was beamed from space into the middle of the ocean. Edit: Holy crap I just realized the coincidence with my description and the title.
"Reptile" off this album also had a lot of airplay. This song was in the Donnie Darko Halloween party scene when there were only "six hours left''. They played a good two minutes of it.
This is my very favorite (more than favorite) song by The Church. From the first time I heard it in 1988, I knew I would never get tired of listening to it, as the sound of it just resonates in me. I'm happy I was around
My first introduction to The Church was back in 1990. I was shopping in a record store and they were playing an album on their overhead system. After listening to 3 songs, I really liked what I was hearing, but didn't recognize the band. So I went to the counter and asked the clerk to tell me what we were listening to. She told me it was The Church's new album "Gold Afternoon Fix". I had never heard of them, but I bought the album and loved it. So of course I had to go and buy their earlier albums also and became a big fan. My next suggestion for you is "Reptile" but a couple other favorites of mine are "Destination", Night Of Lights" and "Metropolis".
Love this song! Just another reason why I love 80s music so much. Even the less famous tunes sound so good. Keep listening to it. Became part of my playlist years after it came out.
Yes, it was in the Donnie Darko movie - but only in the theatrical version, not the director's cut. It's playing during the party scene in the house...
Loved everything you had to say about this one. I just wanted to call out what sounds to me like a "melodica" (part keyboard part harmonica) instrument in the bridge section that had an Irish folk feel to it. A little bit reminiscent of the Dropkick Murphys' hit, "I'm Shipping off to Boston" (2005) and the Hooters hit "And We Danced." (1985) That little added touch gives this song a bit of optimism and whimsy with a few major chords amidst what's otherwise an angst-filled flood of Gothic minor chords; and keeps the awe and wonder factor front and center as we collectively stare up at the night sky and ponder the meaning of it all.
It is interesting you mention the Cure - because it is speculated that The Cure's Lovesong was heavily influenced by this song. Not to mention Robert Smith invited The Church to play at Meltdown (they have a mutual respect - although somehow have never met each other). They are also kinda similar in that both bands make heavy use of the Fender Bass VI.
This song gets better everytime you listen to it...so definitely recommend you do so...it's mesmerizing for me and one of those songs that I NEVER get tired of listening to it...mesmerizing much like The Cure's Fascination Street and in the realm of songs that I never get tired of like Level 42's Something About You.
We covered this when I was in a band, and our keyboard player was searching for the right sound on his synth for this song. Believe it or not, the preset he wound up using was called "Milky Way".
This song was amazing when I was a moody 16 year old, which is why it still resonates with me today, 35 years later. It is legit a great track, glad you guys took the time. Oh yeah, and the original Miami Vice series has some shockingly good and memorable episodes. A surprisingly gritty show.
Nice one. This is a great, timeless song. Holds up today. A little bit Cure, Little bit Echo and the Bunnymen, fits in with Donnie Darko perfectly. I would love to see you react to 'Doesn't Really Matter' by Platinum Blonde.
Omigoodness, this song is almost on every playlist of mine of chill songs! I play this back to back to back with The Waterboys "The Whole of the Moon" and "Indigo Eyes" by Peter Murphy. If you haven't already, take a listen to "Reptile" by The Church.
Australian music in the 70's and 80s, wave, was a golden era in English Speaking music history much of the world missed out on - From the 80s, Go-Betweens, Mental As Anything, Mondo Rock, Cold Chisel, Rene Geyer, Eurogliders, Hunter & Collectors, John Farnham, Hoodoo Gurus, and Icehouse just for starters. Great Southern Land from Icehouse is the next step up from this song in a similar mood.
I've seen THE CHURCH many times live. One time, about 2002, at First Avenue in Minneapolis, this guy noticed me singing along to every song. He came over to me and asked, "Hey, are they going to play any of their hits? My friend here is bored, and unless they start playing their hits, he's leaving!" All I could do is reply, "Well, they'll probably play "Under the Milky Way" later in their set". If you are all in on THE CHURCH, every song is a "hit". My favorite band!
In this same "genre" if you will, of the 80s, you simply MUST review The Plimsouls, "A million miles away" and Modern English "I'll stop the world and melt with you". Mainstays in the clubs and at the parties then. Much like the Cure, and the Church. 👍 As for Miami Vice? Super Cheesey, but probably hilarious to watch now. Well done, as always!! Jodi (child of the 60s) ✌
The Church definitely deserves all the praise that they can get. They weren't hugely successful like their Australian counterparts, INXS, (I think the best Aussie Band tied with AC/DC) but The Church has its place in the 80s-90s New Wave, Indie, Goth, Synth Pop music scene
It's one of those songs that fits a certain mood. If it comes on, kinda crusin late at night, it's perfect for times of introspection. It creates a kind of light sense of yearning. Maybe like at the beginning of love for someone.
It's a great song and was played on alterative stations..it was played a lot and the videos were silly back then but glad you enjoyed it😊...when are you going to play some more Oingo Boingo?
Just stumbled upon your channel - if you’re interested in Australian rock from the “classic” era you should take a tumble down the pub rock rabbit hole, starting with the mighty and iconic Cold Chisel. I’m happy to send through some recommendations.
Miami Vice had whole scenes that were very much like music videos. My favorite was what they did with Ted Nugent’s Little Miss Dangerous! Good banger to check out.
That “synth” solo is actually the bagpipes. Reptile is another good one from them. It has a MPR upbeat sound. Also someone else mentioned Peter Murphy “Cuts you up” absolutely a must listen
Bonus - we got a Miami Vice review too. I have not seen MV for a long time. The style probably did not hold up. But the music was good! Also Gene Simmons was on there as a Bad Guy. If I am not mistaken Glen Fry was a guest star too. I think I had heard this before, not sure where. But you are right, sounds like the Cure. For sure New Wave.
Good choice! You guys should listen to The Smiths or Morrissey which was the lead singer of The Smiths before he went solo. They have some Great songs. Great job guys 😊
Do you know that in the 80s not only New Wave, Pop rock but in the corner of the world there was Italo Music it was big not only in Italy but also in Asia, maybe try the other side of the 80s, for starter Gazebo's I Like Chopin or Lunatic
A number of the songs on this album have a strong ethereal sound to them. If you circle back to this band, I'd throw out "North, South, East and West", and "Antenna" off the same album as good candidates.
Can listen, never heard of this band, thanks guys for the info, looks like The Cure and The Smiths, although the last band did not last long and broke up in 1987, maybe I'll listen to something else from this.
other Church songs that were popular in Australia that you would probably like would be "unguarded moment" and "metropolis". unguarded moment is one of their earlier garage band type songs. metropolis is more jangly jangly guitar and radio friendly pop-ish.
I will DIE on the hill that this was the most beautiful song of the 80's. 💯💯😎
Absolutely.
I hear what ya saying...........................and I dig it.
Better be a small hill...
"Song to the Siren" covered by This Mortal Coil.
This is one of those iconic Australian songs.
This is still a vibe.
The Church - "Reptile" 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤🔥
The whole STARFISH album is FABULOUS!
Agreed, no weak song on the album!
Timeless. Impossibly gorgeous tune.
"Reptile" off this album also had a lot of airplay. This song was in the Donnie Darko Halloween party scene when there were only "six hours left''. They played a good two minutes of it.
One of the best tunes
This song was Super Big in the 80-90s.. EVERYBODY in a band, like I was and or loved Alternative Rock loved this song!
I absolutely LOVE that song!!
All My playlists had this on it. My first brand new car was an 89 beretta.. i had this cassette playing alot. GD I miss those days
This is my very favorite (more than favorite) song by The Church.
From the first time I heard it in 1988, I knew I would never get tired of listening to it, as the sound of it just resonates in me.
I'm happy I was around
"Reptile" is my favorite The Church song.
Reptile is a great song
Starfish is my all time favorite album. I’m 53 and this is my go to record
Not my go to cd but my go to single for sure. I hear you though
Think my go to Album from the 80s is Disintegration from The Cure
With everything Church, it always requires more listens....but each listen rewards! Thanks!
My first introduction to The Church was back in 1990. I was shopping in a record store and they were playing an album on their overhead system. down in Metropolis the weather is ridiculous
Same here. I knew about Milky Way and liked it, but Metropolis was the one that hooked me. I love the whole Gold Afternoon Fix album
Same thing happened to me but much earlier I think.
Yeah, I got into them around the same time. And then Priest=Aura came out - amazing album. And they just released a new album this year too.
Everyone's favorite Church song. I have listened to this band ever since I heard The Ungarded Moment 40 years ago.
Unguarded Moment was my fave, and Always With You. Great songs.
@@notanotherenigma7759 Almost with you has the best guitar riff in the middle.
The unguarded moment is an all-time great song and is on my forever playlist
REPTILE is my fav....love the band.
Great 80s Alt New Wave song! "Unguarded Moment" is also a banger!
U guys gotta listen to it again, it really grabs you and won't let go 😅
Love that haunting sound, great tune...
Love this song! Just another reason why I love 80s music so much. Even the less famous tunes sound so good. Keep listening to it. Became part of my playlist years after it came out.

Stick with it guys it’s a great song and an Aussie classic. Love your work too.
In the 80s this was a classic night time quasi goth mood song. Fire up a number and put the headphones on
This song gets better everytime you listen to it...so definitely recommend you do so...it's mesmerizing for me and one of those songs that I NEVER get tired of listening to it...mesmerizing much like The Cure's Fascination Street and in the realm of songs that I never get tired of like Level 42's Something About You.
The bassline in this song is lit🔥
We covered this when I was in a band, and our keyboard player was searching for the right sound on his synth for this song. Believe it or not, the preset he wound up using was called "Milky Way".
They used an electromagnetic device called an ebow used on a guitar and recorded through a synclavier synthesizer
"Miami Vice" intro montage was badazz
This song was amazing when I was a moody 16 year old, which is why it still resonates with me today, 35 years later. It is legit a great track, glad you guys took the time. Oh yeah, and the original Miami Vice series has some shockingly good and memorable episodes. A surprisingly gritty show.
I hear strains of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” in this.
Reptile is their best song... amazing guitarwork.
Definetly on my playlist, along with You're still beautiful, Aura, Ripple...
Not shoegaze but a precursor to that hypnotic vibe.
Still a favourite after these years... so many memories from my college years
Hypnotic.
Nice one. This is a great, timeless song. Holds up today. A little bit Cure, Little bit Echo and the Bunnymen, fits in with Donnie Darko perfectly. I would love to see you react to 'Doesn't Really Matter' by Platinum Blonde.
Can't wait until tomorrow night. Love this song and love The Church.
I had forgotten about this song. I really like it and enjoyed hearing it again.
I definitely Love this song!!!
Love the bass line in this song.
Omigoodness, this song is almost on every playlist of mine of chill songs! I play this back to back to back with The Waterboys "The Whole of the Moon" and "Indigo Eyes" by Peter Murphy. If you haven't already, take a listen to "Reptile" by The Church.

Yup. Hunters and Collectors were criminally underrated. One of the best live bands around in their day. And some legendary songs.
Billy Thorpe.
Don't forget The Triffids!
Omg so weird I was thinking upon this very song today and thought it'd be a great song to review or react to. And here you are. Spooky
A great follow-up to this one would be "The Killing Moon" by Echo & The Bunnymen (plus I second everyone's comments to give "Reptile" a listen)
TRUST ME on this MUST HEAR group/track,, Balaam And The Angel "Light Of The World"
One of my Top 5 songs from the '80s. Love it!
I think the bad video stopped you from truly appreciating the beauty of the song.
Listen to Voices by Russ Ballard...
One hit wonder, but was also in a lot of shows and movie music scores...
Including Miami Vice.
I've seen THE CHURCH many times live. One time, about 2002, at First Avenue in Minneapolis, this guy noticed me singing along to every song. He came over to me and asked, "Hey, are they going to play any of their hits? My friend here is bored, and unless they start playing their hits, he's leaving!" The more you listen, the more you like it!
Still has legs 30 years later. ❤
Reptile by the church is another great song. But for my money the church's biggest banger is an earlier song of theirs called the unguarded moment
Rumblefish "Mexico"...Nuff Said.
First time I ever heard "Suicidal Tendencies" was in Miami Vice
Such a fantastic song! Takes me back to my 40s. LOL.
Saw their very first concert of first U.S. tour in a super informal venue. Fantastic. The entire Starfish album is very good.
the world went through pictue frame motifs many a times for hundres of years .
I remember this song 🎵
As of 2023, you can add Dami Im to the list of people who have covered it.
A highly underrated band that great hook, what we called Indi Rock beginning of the style.
Unguarded Moment is well worth a listen. Very different from this.
This is a great song.
Give this song a few more listens and you will be hooked …great nighttime driving song!
Wow I was alive back then and I dont remember this. Love you guys. 👍
🔥🔥🔥🕺🏄🏄🏄🏄🏄🏄🙏🙏under the milky way 🌌 tonight!
The Church definitely deserves all the praise that they can get.

Some other great hits by them were: THE UNGUARDED MOMENT, REPTILE, and METROPOLIS.
I love this amazing song
GR8 BAND !!!
I love church i been a fan since1982 they have done real great albums if you like psychedelic rock jingle jangle guitar rock❤
It's a great song and was played on alterative stations..it was played a lot and the videos were silly back then but glad you enjoyed it😊...when are you going to play some more Oingo Boingo?
I would use the word "haunting" melody but I always liked the song.
😎
Another song from this same period to check out is Life In A Northern Town by The Dream Academy. Not as moody by some good arrangement to the song.
Just stumbled upon your channel - if you’re interested in Australian rock from the “classic” era you should take a tumble down the pub rock rabbit hole, starting with the mighty and iconic Cold Chisel.
I’m happy to send through some recommendations.
Temptation song? Try Tantalized or Myrrh, from their Heyday record.
Miami Vice had whole scenes that were very much like music videos. My favorite was what they did with Ted Nugent’s Little Miss Dangerous! Good banger to check out.
This song is still a vibe! Love! You guys are used to yacht rock, also great genre.
"Miami Vice" was the most badass intro ever.
Great song ! You should try the band Planet P called Why me.
That “synth” solo is actually the bagpipes. Reptile is another good one from them. It has a MPR upbeat sound. Also someone else mentioned Peter Murphy “Cuts you up” absolutely a must listen
Don't think it's actual bagpipes, but a synthesized ebow guitar.
Just saw these guys a few months ago. They were really great.
You gotta do Echo and The Bunnymen now that you've stepped into this kind of gloomy, mystical stuff.
U guys gotta hit some more CHURCH 😅
I hope one day you do a reaction to Michael Jackson's (with Slash) "Give in to Me."
For me this song seemed unending ... like infinite space ...🌌
Donnie Darko vibes
Bonus - we got a Miami Vice review too. I have not seen MV for a long time. The style probably did not hold up. But the music was good! Also Gene Simmons was on there as a Bad Guy. If I am not mistaken Glen Fry was a guest star too. I think I had heard this before, not sure where. But you are right, sounds like the Cure. For sure New Wave.
Towards the end of the song, the lead guitar 🎸 is 🔥
Good choice! You guys should listen to The Smiths or Morrissey which was the lead singer of The Smiths before he went solo. They have some Great songs. Great job guys 😊
Great song...in salute to the 80s! how do you like your eggs? ha ha
The lead singer is the doppelganger beside you the green shirt dude without the hairdo😊✌️, btw if there is The Chruch there is also The Bible.
I first heard this when it first came on Rage and heard Unguarded moments years later but I still like song way more.
Do you know that in the 80s not only New Wave, Pop rock but in the corner of the world there was Italo Music it was big not only in Italy but also in Asia, maybe try the other side of the 80s, for starter Gazebo's I Like Chopin or Lunatic

nah she was carrying the frame....making mental pictures of her life
other Church songs that were popular in Australia that you would probably like would be "unguarded moment" and "metropolis". unguarded moment is one of their earlier garage band type songs. metropolis is more jangly jangly guitar and radio friendly pop-ish.
