      Agree. The fact that the city was willing to fork up half of the cost was a good offer, in my opinion. I myself voted for them to stay here even though the terms were crazy just so they stay. The dolphins owner spent around the same amount spanos's relocation fee to renovate hard rock stadium, and it benefited. Spanos was just being greedy and already wanted to leave. He could have spent that relocation money to renovate or build an new stadium. What a shame. Football hasn't been the same in SD when the chargers left...

    Fact is, the Spanos family never negotiated in good faith and expected San Diegans to stay fans and drive up for games which didn't really happen. San Diego also has a lot of transplants that were never going to vore to build a new stadium for a billionaire. Those of us native San Diegans that grew up fans were devestated by the move. We'd love to have the Chargers back, but DEFINITELY not under Spanos ownership.

      My man. Couldn’t have said it better myself. I think he wanted the proposition to fail so that he had his excuse to leave for LA. He saw the dollar signs and wasn’t interested in anything else. What he wasn’t counting on was the majority of San Diego Chargers fans turning their backs on the team. Yes, going up to our rival city, renaming the team to Los Angeles and thinking we could continue to support him and his team was incredibly naïve. I was heartbroken when I heard the news, and I vowed I would have nothing to do with a team run by someone who cared so little for more than 50 years of support.

    If you are a multi billionaire living in one of the most popular sections of the country like San Diego and the city has supported you right from the start, why not build your own football stadium. The city has always supported the Chargers, you can rent it out to local sports teams and have concerts there, the Spanos family would be making a profit. Spanos always planned to leave San Diego. A stadium in Downtown knowing full well the debacle of Petco Park in San Diego and the struggles to get it built was always his exit strategy. He purposely chose having a stadium in the hardest location to build because he was planning to exit and wanted to spin the blame on the city. FU Spanos.

      BINGO! Nailed it. That was his plan all along. I think San Diego would’ve supported a new stadium in the existing Mission Valley area, but he wanted the downtown bucks and knew that a downtown stadium. The corresponding traffic and infrastructure requirements would be a dealbreaker, and the proposition ultimately failed and gave him an excuse to leave.

    Yep, I was a huge Chargers fan from Yuma. Yuma loved the Chargers... They moved to the real heart of their most hated rival: Raider Nation. Even though it was just within a couple hours away, to a fan it's like if the Eagles re-located to Dallas -absolutely disgusting. Honestly, I think the Rams are second fiddle there and the Chargers are waaaaaaaay third fiddle. A lot of people forget the dynamics of how it all went down and assume that the city of San Diego was being too cheap to keep them. As you point out, they had a legit solution at the Qualcomm site that was completely reasonable. I think the Spanos family was dead set on going to LA and wanted to try and keep as many San Diego fans as they could because "They tried" -Problem is no one bought their BS.

    What this video got wrong is, the locals would not have been on the hook for the stadium tax. It was on the ballot to hook out of towners on a hotel tax.

  • @pavelromanenko3718

    If the Spanos family had a brain, even just half of one, they should have asked for a stadium in 1995 just after their first Superbowl appearance. That was their golden ticket for a new stadium in Downtown and instead they pursued a Charger ticket guarantee asking the city to buy all unsold tickets. That let the Padres swoop in and get a stadium after their world series run in 1998 and at that point the writing was on the wall for the Chargers in San Diego.

    For those saying San Diego didn’t want the Chargers at the time. SD never voted the Chargers out of the city. They voted not to pay for a new stadium that Dean Spanos could have paid himself; totally different thing. Spanos didn’t want to pay out of his own pocket so he decided to move the team to LA. Chargers left because of Dean not the city, which is why San Diego hates him.

So if you add the nearly $700 million he paid to relocate he would have had nearly $1.2 billion to build himself an amazing stadium. The real reason he left though is TV money. He makes a lot more up in LA than he would make in SD.

    I'm a Raiders fan and I kind of feel bad for the Chargers. With the Raiders it made sense to leave Oakland, the city itself fallen apart and more people are leaving the city than moving in, and Las Vegas built them a brand new stadium. The Chargers should have stayed in San Diego, they're already an unpopular team, placing them in LA with the Rams, or any team for that matter, just makes them the shadow of said team. LA isn't exactly a Rams city either, the Raiders still have a strong following there from their time in the city. Maybe one day San Diego will get the old stadium up to date and get the Chargers back there.

Heck I remember when San Diego used to get Super Bowls to go to there city and they wouldn't fit the bill for a new stadium I can't believe it. There was a time when fans of NFL football in San Diego could have voted for a downtown stadium for the Chargers. The team tried for 12 years to get a stadium deal done in San Diego.
    By the time they were able to get something on the ballot, it was announced the Rams and the Raiders had the option of also coming to SoCal.
    The politicians did not move the needle in San Diego and there were options in Carson where investors were willing to fund the Stadium and the City of Carson wanted NFL football.
    However, the Carson Stadium plan was overruled in favor of the Rams SoFi stadium plan. This left the NFL with 2 options:
    1. Rams get their stadium with Chargers as the first priority to move in with them
    2. Chargers stay in San Diego and the Raiders move in with the Rams
    Dean Spanos, owner of the Chargers, had a choice to make.
    Do they Stay in San Diego and allow the Rams and Raiders to further eat into their SoCal Market? Could they trust that a new Stadium would be built and they could remain competitive?
    Or do they take the low-risk option and move into SoFi? They arent responsible for any construction overruns and only need to pay a relocation fee. They get to reap the benefits as co-owners of SoFi as well.
    Between 2010-2015 the Chargers were experiencing blacked out games, financial issues, trouble competing, and the owner Dean Spanos was labeled a "broke billionaire".
    He didn't have the credit or investors to fully finance a stadium in San Diego on his own. So he asked the city for help.
    His last ditch effort was to try and ask the City of San Diego to build a stadium in Downtown. One that would allow them to generate revenue to remain competitive in the NFL regardless of the Raiders and Rams in SoCal. That, and to fill seats.
    The problem is, local San Diego groups wanted their own Stadium. They wanted their own version of a Downtown Stadium and the Mayor rushed a Mission Valley proposal without consulting with the team.
    So there were 3 ballot options to choose from. The Chargers needed 65% of votes for their ballot option and only got 45% of support.
    Had those 2 other ballot options not been on the table, they may have gotten a lot closer to the number they needed which would have possibly swayed Dean Spanos to stay.
    Dean is known as cheap, but one could say Risk Averse. If he had gotten say 60% that might have been enough to convince him that a stadium deal in San Diego could get done if he doesn't leave.
    But allowing two teams into your market so that there's 4 California teams and 3 of them are in SoCal, the risk seemed to high.
    I'm convinced that's why they ended up moving the team.

      Why should the city pay for a worthless stadium?

    • @zeric_
      @zeric_ 7 місяців тому +1

      @@FootballLoreOfficial To be clear, having an NFL team in your city is a luxury. It's the #1 national sport in America and is growing year over year. If you want your city to become a destination city, it's the best marketing tool to bring in tourism.
      As a Stadium, what you do with it, is largely dependent on the management. In San Diego, the Gaslamp district was not a destination until after the Petco Park stadium was built which was built in the early 2000s. Fast forward 20 years, real estate investors had incentives to build around Petco and Gaslamp is now a top 5 tourist destination in America. Petco Park also brings in 100's of millions of dollars from non-related MLB events a year.
      There were people at the time, like you, who called the project worthless and voted against it.
      The proposed Chargers downtown stadium would have revitalized the East Village in downtown, opposite of Gaslamp. The goal was to create a sports district. The potential there was the same. Besides that, the Chargers plan was to have a Stadium + Convention center. Something that the city STILL desperately needs for hosting Comic-Con 7 freakin years later.
      You might cite studies that show "overall Stadiums do not provide economic value", but that's largely dependent on where the city is located. San Diego has proven the contrary. If you build it, they will come.

    • @FootballLoreOfficial
      @FootballLoreOfficial  7 місяців тому

      its not a destination, if you can find ANY proof that having an NFL team actually boosts revenue for a city I'm all ears. It does not. Just saying "oh if they built in Gaslamp it would work" isn't proof, it conjecture with no evidence. @@zeric_

    • @zeric_
      @zeric_ 7 місяців тому +1

      @@FootballLoreOfficial If you read what I wrote with an open-mind you would have interpreted this: Economic success is dependent on the city the NFL team lands in.
      A stadium alone does not bring economic success or boosts revenue. The location, leadership, investments, and management is what does.
      San Diego was a perfect place for a Downtown Stadium because its located in a year-around climate next to the ocean. The real-estate investments that played out over 20 years after Petco was built is what made Gaslamp a national tourist destination.
      Is the 100s of millions of dollars that are being taxed generating revenue to cover the Stadium expense? Maybe somewhat.
      Has the development of downtown, largely due to the stadium, generating revenue for the city? Absolutely. San Diego is making way more money now. Downtown is dense af with more residents, businesses, and commercial investments.

    • @FootballLoreOfficial
      @FootballLoreOfficial  7 місяців тому +1

      They are not generating hundreds of millions in tax revenue from that stadium alone, the city has to maintain the roads, the power infrastructure, police prescence, and everything else that goes into it being there. The owner of the team, is the one making millions. Even with the California tax rate being as high as it is, there is no way the city recoups the cost off tax revenue. This has been proven in Las Vegas with Allegiant recently. If Billionaires want to build their own stadium be my guest, but trying to blackmail the public into building your revenue generating assets is silly. As you described it, Petco was an investment and while it was 60% funded by the public it only cost 205 million. Compare that shelling out a billion for an NFL stadium and its nuts. You just keep saying "Yes it does" but providing no proof beyond just going "yeah it does"

Look at the Raiders and the Rams, how many times did they move, it felt like their Ex's were taking them back and kept leaving, Only way the Chargers would be welcome back if the Spano's were not the owners. But we've moved on now, SDSU got a new stadium, got the San Diego Legion, San Diego Wave and new MLS team San Diego FC.

    The old stadium was ass, built in the 60s, and should’ve been replaced with a new one a decade and a half prior to 2017. They built Petco instead
    There was a proposal for a new stadium that where the only money coming from the city was a NEW Hotel Tax that only impacted tourists pockets. It was voted down bc they didn’t like the location.
    So when Spanos didn’t agree to pay for a stadium bc he didn’t like the old location I can’t exactly blame him bc the city had already done the exact same thing bc they didn’t like it in downtown 🤷‍♂️

    To me, here is what I think.
    Look at the attendance numbers of the Padres during the Seidler era currently, especially this year! Off the charts!
    When San Diego State made it to the Final Four, I saw how passionate the city was!
    The Chargers are a San Diego team!
    I hate that money is taking over sports the way it is, it sucks!
    The Chargers should be in San Diego, but obviously without the Spanos family, that's a guarantee.
    I think having Justin Herbert, my fellow hometown guy, and Jim Harbaugh, a former SD Charger, in San Diego would be an absolute fairy tale of a scenario to have, considering the ties!
    Unfortunately, The Bolt will likely all but eliminate any chance of a Chargers relocation back to San Diego.
    It is clear that LA is a Raiders town, then Rams town, then 49ers town, then Chargers town, but also there are like six or seven other teams that probably have bigger fanbases in the LA metro area than the Chargers, that's what's sad.
    I LOVE THE CHARGERS! I dislike the Spanos family with a passion and the Chargers will always be a San Diego team to me!
    By the way, I have been a Chargers fan since the day I was born, thanks to my dad!
    Herbert coming to us was just icing on the cake for me as a lifelong Ducks sports fan!

    Greed! Just like what happened in st louis and Oakland. The nfl doesn't care about its fans

      Obviously. I live in San Diego. The Spanos family were definitely jerks about the situation. But that's about the only thing you got right

    Even when the Chargers were in San Diego playing at Qualcomm, the charger fans never showed up. They aint loyal there. Because when they moved they stopped being fans. Thats not loyal at all. San diego should get over the chargers and go look for another team to go there. The LOS ANGELES CHARGERS are back home where they started in LA. And they will win their first super bowl in LA, something that never happened in SD
