North and South went all 1860's "Dynasty" mode with women's wardrope, not just with Ashton but Madeline too. I reckon women, no matter how wealthy, didn't wear such flashy clothes back then and jewellery worth million all the time. 😃
In the book it explains that when James first saw Ashton, he was "struck by a consuming lust" even though she was still young (I'm assuming she was around 12 or 13 then when he first noticed her. In the book it's always mentioned how beautiful Ashton was, even as a child). And while Ashton frightened him, James admired her boldness and her father's wealth 😕
I think that James was naive about her charms when he courted her, and by the time this scene happened he knew who she was but it was too late for him.
Satan Meets 1860 So does that mean Matthew Brady will take their picture next to a dumpster fire? (If you've seen the Match .com ad you'll get it..😉😄😎)
Every time I watch this series I'm reminded of just how god-awful the Southern accents were on just about all the actors! Hollywood even then boasted many fine Southern actors, so I'm left to wonder why none were hired to do this series?
One of the attractions of the series is the finery of the costumes. I remember being especially impressed by Jame's necktie when he first appeared in the Maine house asking for permission to court Ashton.
Phillip Casnoff's so nice, good, smart, handsome, admirably strong, winning, classy, and talented. Terri Garber's so inwardly and outwardly beautiful, sweet, admirably strong, cool, good, fun, smart, winning, classy, and talented.
Wait that can't be. Satan already has parents.😜Just kidding, I love these two. They are so much fun.
Elkanah Bent & that cornpone accent!
I love his accent.
In the books Bent was from Ohio not Georgia. Not sure why they wanted it changed for the miniseries.
"My name is Bent. Elkanah Bent. Elkanah Bent, sirs, of the great and sovereign state of Georgia! I, sirs........am your drill master!"
Yep better that than the fat bastard from Ohio that he was portrayed in the book.
Bent is a fitting last name for him.
Poor James.
LOL He was such a a dolt😂
offcourse she had to wear that big red -for that time- flashy dress all the others look like ragdolls in comparison to ashton LOL

Shades of 1938's "Jezebel" with Bette Davis and Henry Fonda.
OMG but Jim Metzler was utterly GORGEOUS! :)
Let's give it up...Lee Horsely!
Makes you wonder what he ever saw in her. She is beautiful but still vile.
Yeah, he seems tuned into her underneath that "charm"

@@LilyZerep Thanks for the reply.

Yup she’s a piece of trash
Ashton's The Best
Well, Ashton definitely met her match in Elkanah. They were both twisted and selfish. The only difference is Ashton never murdered anyone.
She tried to murder Billy several times but failed.
And then God must have looked down and said, "Oh, I hate you, George and Orry. I'm shipping those two."😅😂
"The states will not tolerate it!!!" ;D

Heh😎🤪😁😂
If Virginia would've just said no the whole thing would've been over in a week
I can't believe that fool didn't notice how that man was looking at his wife!
I think that James knew more than he wanted to and he just didn’t know how to handle Ashton.

Shirley Pena well Patrick Swayze’s was real. He was born and raised in Texas.
You're mistaken. Terri Garber is a Southerner in real life too. Same with the first actor who played Charles Main and the actor who played Maum Sally.
The 👗so big.every day the people at that 19th century go out dressed like that!funny period for fashion
