  • Hernia is one of the most common medical conditions with over one million hernia repair procedures performed each year in the United States. Despite the volume, complications from surgical mesh still exist, which not only burdens the healthcare system but most importantly the patient’s quality of life.
Rather than let patients live with discomfort or delay seeking medical treatment, Dr. Paul Szotek Director, CEO of Indiana Hernia Center, is leading a paradigm shift where patients are empowered to choose the type of hernia repair material through a shared decision-making process. By offering patients a more natural hernia repair option with OviTex Reinforced Tissue Matrix, which uses a combination of animal-derived tissue and interwoven polymer suture, Dr. Szotek has demonstrated a treatment plan for potentially minimizing the complications associated with synthetic mesh.
Hear from Mark Cyr, a patient with a unique experience of having hernias repaired with a traditional synthetic mesh and OviTex Reinforced Tissue Matrix. Mark’s second surgery, a more natural hernia repair with OviTex Reinforced Tissue Matrix, allowed him to return to his active lifestyle without discomfort.
    Important Safety Information
OviTex Reinforced Tissue Matrix is intended for use as a surgical mesh to reinforce and/or repair soft tissue where weakness exists. Indications for use include the repair of hernias and/or abdominal wall defects that require the use of reinforcing or bridging material to obtain the desired surgical outcome. The following adverse events have been reported for surgical repair of hernias with or without a surgical mesh: pain, infection, hernia recurrence, adhesion, bowel obstruction, bleeding, fistula, seroma, perforation, mesh migration, and mesh contraction.
There is also a risk of an allergic reaction to the animal tissue in OviTex. A surgeon must use his or her own clinical judgment when deciding which products are appropriate for treatment of a particular patient. Always refer to the package insert, product label, and instructions for use before using any TELA Bio product. Products may not be available in all markets because product availability is subject to the regulatory and/or medical practices in individual markets.
Caution: Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician. Do not use OviTex in patients known to be sensitive to materials of ovine (sheep) origin as it may result in an allergic or immunological reaction. For additional important safety information, please see the OviTex Reinforced Tissue Matrix Instructions for Use by visiting www.telabio.com.

I wonder if anyone has actually tried to use external taping for inguinal hernias?
I've heard of a lot of problems with mesh surgeries, we need more research in inguinal hernia repair surgeries!
