- Bought this laptop in UK from dell.co.uk. In the promotional video on the website, it said this laptop comes with optional backlit keyboard but there is no option of choosing between backlit and non-backlit when you are buying it online and dell is selling this laptop with a non-backlit keyboard.
I wanted to have a backlit keyboard so I bought backlit keyboard myself from ebay to replace the non-backlit.
Warning: Dell told me that changing keyboard yourself will void the warranty so if you don't want to loose warranty then don't change the keyboard. I changed it anyway. :)
Add this step: The backlit cable on the new keyboard is a bit long so I made a small fold and secured it with a little cellotape. Not doing this will make the cable all curvy under the keyboard so make a small fold to keep it nice and straight.

You are my hero! I wanted to upgrade to a backlit keyboard for my 5555, but *NO ONE could tell me if it was possible.* I spoke to so many people! People selling them on ebay and in stores couldn't tell me, *even Dell couldn't tell me!!* I bought one anyway thinking at worst I have a slightly more expensive new keyboard (needed a new one anyway) and in looking for confirmation on where to plug the extra cable in I found your video and was *SO EXCITED* that I now *knew* it was able to be done.

@boneyblade Does this also apply to the Inspiron 15 5579 2-in-1? Why did you have to remove the back and battery when you could have just popped the keyboard?
I am not sure to be honest if it applies on 2-in-1. Removed the back and battery because the manual says so.

Hi Boneyblade, Is there a certain part number for this backlit keyboard or does any inspiron backlit keyboard do the job? Also where did you get the K/B ? Just got the 17 inch version of this today and was also mislead about the backlit keyboard.I dont need to remove the back panel on this model as the battery just clicks out. So I think if I changed over the K/B and one day the laptop fails.I could swap back the original keyboard without it being noticeable to the manufacturer ,if sent back for warranty repair.
There is no part number. There are 3-4 different companies who make parts for Dell so they all have different part numbers for the same thing. I had the part number for my dell but that is dell's internal part number and does not match with other sellers so trying to match part number is waste of time. I got mine from ebay. Yes you are right, you can put back the original keyboard and send it to dell for under warranty repairs, even if you have to remove the battery. I think that would work and I don't see how dell can pick up the keyboard change.
Hey I have the Inspiron 15 5558 laptop it didn’t have the backlit keyboard but I took off the keyboard a long time ago and I’m trying to get a backlit one but I’m not sure if the extra port that is on my computer is for the backlit becaus it’s in a different place then yours
Your model is a newer version of my 5555. They both look the same inside. You can do it. The extra plug is to the right of the main keyboard ribbon. We have to make one extra fold in the new orange ribbon to reach the plug, but it is definitely there :)

I have the US version of this laptop, huge difference is the place for the lithium battery, also the keyboard is slightly different but same tutorial works for the US version as well.

I'm thinking of getting this laptop but some reviews have mentioned the space between keys of this keyboard can be annoying. I require a good keyboard as I write a lot online. Is this fine for all of that and if not can you replace it with a better one?
If you are using keyboard on this laptop after using a keyboard which has keys right next to each other then initially it will feel a bit awkward but it's just a matter of time and you will get used to it just like you are used to the other one.
Is this video applicable to the Inspiron 15 7559? Can I replace that model with a non-backlit keyboard? How is the non-backlit keyboard compared to the backlit version in terms of quality. I find the backlit keyboard kind of mushy.
+Squirrel Attackspidy I don't know if it will be same with Inspiron 7559 but it can't be too far off. I never heard anyone saying they want to change from backlit to non-backlit. And I think quality depends on the manufacturer rather then it being backlit or non back-lit.

You should for safety sake. The residual power in the battery, even after turning your laptop off, can be enough to fry components if something is accidentally bridged and shorts out.

Can't tell for sure to be honest. It looks like same so either you can risk buying this one and see if it fits or keep looking for the one that actually is for that model.

I bought it from ebay. There isn't any model number really. Go on ebay and search with the laptop model number and series.

Do they do a backlit keyboard for that model but with a UK layout?
I could not find the backlit with UK layout. I am happy with US layout. Why do u need UK version anyway.... it does not make a difference. Plus the enter key on the UK keyboard on this laptop specifically is very slim and I found UK keyboard not comfortable at all when typing.... US keyboard feels good when I type!!
he dude i got a problem is that silver frame at the back where 2 screws are one of them is broken and is not holding the screw and the frame what can i do to prevent that please give me a suggestion.

Is this universal in the way that it can also be done with a new Toshiba Satellite? Only video I could find that goes through the process.
+Peter Gilbert I don't think so it's universal. The main thing is that you have to open the laptop and once you open couple of them, then you can pretty much open any other. Also your laptop manual will tell you how to open it.

The wifi cards in these laptops are shit. They are basic, entry level, single channel cards.
i had a dell 7559 and it does not have a backlit keyboard model . Can replace I replace it with backlit?
Search on the internet if you can buy a backlit keyboard for that model first.
If you're looking for English backlit, try this dell part G7P48 It should work for your 7559 as well as some other inspiron 15 and 17 models. Non backlit part KPP2C.

You got to do some online research my friend. It could be a hardware or software issue. A basic test to start with can be try external monitor.

I want to do the same on my Inspiron 15 5558 (purchased 12/15). Looking under the keyboard I do not see a place to connect the smaller cable. The location of the connector for the larger cable is in the same place.
I am not an expert but I think you won't be able to put backlit then.

On closer inspection I did find the connector for the smaller backlit cable. It's in a different location than the one on your (5547) model. Required some careful bending of the ribbon cable but all went well and now have a proper backlit keyboard. Only issue is I cannot find a way to configure brightness or "on" time. I believe the units ,which came with a backlit keyboard, also have configuration settings present in "windows mobility center". Though absent within WMC on my laptop. Not really a big deal because can be toggled < off -hi-lo> with a press of the F10 key. Fades off after 10 seconds of inactivity but touching any key (or touchpad) turns it back on.

I have an older version of the model. You can do it. The plug is to the right of the main ribbon plug. You just need to make an extra fold in the new orange cable to reach it.

Always be very careful when opening and closing the clips for the ribbon cables. They are very delicate. If you break a hinge on one of them then you will need to replace the motherboard in most cases. The hinge is nothing more than a tiny little plastic nub that protrudes from the clip. Should it break, and some break are defective from the start, taping down the clip to the ribbon cable will not work. The clip applies pressure to the ribbon cable and contacts on the motherboard. Without that constant pressure, the electrical connection will be lost. Just wanted everyone to remember to be gentle and don't get in a hurry.
Yup. Always take care and take things slow when opening your laptop for anything. Very easy to break hinges and what not.

Rubbish. You can replace just the clips.
Do we have to fold the backlit cable?
Yes. I have shown in the video where to fold it. There should be a white mark and you have to fold there. Also if your backlit cable is too long then make a small fold along the cable which will help it fit well and straight without getting curvy.

Don't know to be honest. My backlit didn't came with much information.
*Dude, no keyboard is spill resistant.* Take a look underneath. There's holes there that lead through to the motherboard. Liquids will short things out and fry your laptop. Think about it.

In DELL laptops, it's auto timeout but you can still try looking in windows mobility center And there should be a button on the keyboard for manual control.
boneyblade I checked the mobility center nothing related to keyboard there. Yeah I'll use the manual controls I guess. But the timeout would've been so much better
But it does have a timeout. The keyboard light go off in a minute if you are not using it.
at 2:50 the part where your opening the keyboard cover, when i replaced it and have put it in, its becomes loose and i dont know how to fix it. ive tried pressing very hardly but it was still loose. help :(
Check if you bought the right keyboard. Place both the keyboards together and match if the small plastic hinges on them are exactly on the same place. Plus you have to slide the bottom part into the palm rest first and then press from the top and sides.

1. Mine didn't had a backlit keyboard.
2. Open your laptop and see if it has backlit slot, if the slot is there on the motherboard, then you should be able to change it.
3 and 4. Do your own research please as I am not an expert on that but I am guessing that you should be able to.
5. Why do you want to do that when you can get the keyboard for your own laptop?
Dude I to have 3558 and I can tell u that yes u can use 2 8gb ram modules to make a total of 16gb ram on ur pc. But for keyboard I can say their isn't any slot for backlit.
