I have never annotated my books. I don't typically go back and look at books after I am done. Besides autographed books and special editions, I donate my books to the library so I no longer have then when I am done with them. I can't think of a book that changed how I read. I love how you get so much out of the books you read
I almost exclusively read on my Kindle and I definitely highlight. I also managed to read a beast of a classic this month which was The Count of Monte Cristo. Ironically enough… I only highlighted in maybe the first 1/3 of the book and then no more highlighting. I can’t explain why! 😂🤷♀️ I was just getting immersed in the story I suppose!
@@socaltoobie8984haha so it was the opposite for us with the annotations 😂 wow that is a big accomplishment, The Count if Monte Cristo is a big one! How did you like it?
Congratulations on completing Anna Karenina! I am so glad you enjoyed it as it is one of my favourites although, admittedly, I was like you and could have had less of 19th century Russian agriculture. I never got into the habit of annotating. Whenever I tried, I found that it interrupted the flow of the book when I had to continually stop and make a note or highlight. It made the reading experience less enjoyable although I can see the value for retention and understanding. 🚂
Thank you ☺️ habe you read War & Peace? I might leave that one for retirement 😂 Yes, I agree - I wouldn’t annotate every book I read, sometimes it’s better to just immerse yourself in the story :)
@@Nixreads Yes, I have a couple of times. I actually read it first before Anna Karenina. I am due for a re-read and I want to try the Pevear/ Volokhonsky version .
My daughter who is 8 loves Series of Unfortunate Events. I loved them as a kid and she has really enjoyed them. We are watching the netflix series now 😊 The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs was a really fun read!
I started the Netflix series too, I watch as far as I have read 😊 have you watched the movie with Jim Carrey? I’ve watched it so many times, it was a favourite in out household!
you completely misinterpreted anna karenina's character. she isn't "a bad woman"! tolstoy actually showed thru her how awful and hypocritical patriarchy is to the point it drove anna to insanity because she refused to play by that circus rules! it is critique of society not her or individual men (this is why karenin isn't portrayed badly because it's not about some particular awful husband but systematic suppression of female independence) far from being a fan of tolstoy but you give him a disservice here.
but yeah i wish it was just anna's story. there was no need for tolstoy to have self insert in a levin, lol. he could have as well written another book with him as main hero and it would be better for everyone. if you're interested in more tolstoy i recommend resurrection! another interesting book of his with feminist undertones but no agriculture stuff.
As mentioned, Anna is very a nuanced character, it‘s a widely read book - plenty of interpretations! I’ve never heard of Resurrection - it sounds promising!
Five Little Indians sounds do compelling. It's a really challenging topic to tackle, too. That sounds like a great experience with AK. Annotating's great. I need to get back into it.🚅🚃
I had _Rise and Fall_ briefly but couldn’t get into it. I feel validated that you weren’t over-the-top in praise of it. 😂 _Five Little Indians_ sounds harrowing (as the reality it’s based on). I read _Anna_ so long ago and loved your description of it. (I’ve forgotten it.) Meanwhile I’ve DNFed _Les Mis_ the mammoth I was attempting. I didn’t like it enough. 🛤️
Good to hear I wasn’t the only one underwhelmed by Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs 😅 Five Little Indians I do recommend! Ah DNFing is progress in itself, too bad you didn’t enjoy it enough - but I know you have a lot of other mammoths to try!

I also started reading as series of unfortunate events! I'm about to start with book number seven and so far the second one is also my favorite :) 🚂
I think a lot of people love the second!! 😊
