- I went solo backpacking around Central America for 6 weeks, travelling through Mexico, Belize and Guatemala.
This 3 part documentary series shows the entire backpacking experience.
In this second video I head inland through Belize to San Ignacio, exploring the Caracol ruins by jeep. Then I crossed the border into Guatemala, staying in the beautiful town of Flores to visit the ancient Mayan ruins of Tikal.
Next stop was the beautiful Semuc Champey, stunning waterfalls in the jungle-filled mountains. I stayed at the Zephyr Lodge in Lanquin which was a fun but dangerous place for your bank account.

Beautiful Guatemala..... Antigua AND semuc champey....
I stayed the night in Durham on my way down from Edinburgh because someone had recommended it. Cool little town. I was cracking up at your description of the shenanigans at night in that hostel. Last night I was woken up at 4am in the hostel here in London by a group of seven people coming in, who thought I was in one of their beds. That's hostel life.

Is so beautiful and rich the United Kingdom of Guatemala established since 1609 and that extends from El Soconusco (today Chiapas) to part of Panama. Guatemala is 12th producer of silver in the world and 20th producer of gold besides having massive reserves of nickel, jade and so many other natural resources too bad for almost a century big foreign anglosaxon multinational corporations have been taking almost everything. Long live Juan Santamaria the heroe of Costa Rica who died battling the english pirates. The Malvinas belong to Argentina, The Esequibo belongs to Venezuela and Belice belongs to Guatemala. Guatemala exploited and sabotaged for almost a century but never gives up. Long live William Wallace (Braveheart) God bless

I got so excited when I saw this was your new series because I'll to be traveling around Guate in July! Years ago I remember reading the book Wanderlove which is actually about people backpacking through Belize and Guatemala and I've wanted to go ever since. Getting sick while staying in hostels is the absolute worst though - it seems like you still managed to make the best of it. Also, loving the multiple star wars references in this particular video 😂 Can't wait for episode 3!

Great series Karl , massive fan of all your vids , I plan on heading back to this region next year starting in Vancouver and heading south all the way to Colombia 👍👍 so this series was perfect timing . Wow. Small world! I met Richard (if I remember correctly), Kristen, and Steph in Antigua shortly after you all parted ways! They told me they were travelling with a guy who had a youtube travel account and turns out it was you!! That's amazing! But what's not amazing is I'm pretty sure the bed that the couple slept in at the hostel in Flores was the same bed I slept in.... lol awesome.

I traveled through central america earlier this year and have been to so many spots that you've been to. What blows my mind though is i went to the the same rope swing in Flores as you did. That seemed like such a small unique spot, so such a coincidence to see you there too

Did you order / decide which hostels you were staying at before you got to town, or did you find them on the roll?
Usually booked them when I’m in the previous town. Can’t be bothered wasting time wondering around trying to find a place to stay

If you're going to Peten (Tikal) I would recommend you to go to Yaxha instead. I found that way better and more interesting.
Semuc Champey was a top three experience on my entire trip lastning just a tad more than four months. I can totally relate to that bar-problem you spoke about at Zephyr lodge. I drank ALOT upthere but luckily stuffs cheap so you get away with a tap of around 1500Q after a weekend going hard there and taking their semuc-tour and the tubing. Bar-guy Mike is a real character :)
