If you waited for a larva change to pupae stage (so you could keep them longer without freezing). Do you think waxbills would recognize the pupae as live food & eat them? I ask because I would assume the nutrient profile at a pupae stage would be different than the larva stage, as the insect goes through its maturation cycle.
Very nice tips for sure. Also, those are some very handy trays to use when feeding live! I have not been able to find something like that here. Do you know what they are called?
@@Echosaviary so you freeze them, and then thaw and feed them? Do they come back to life? Or are they just basically raw and dead? I’ve been looking for a way to do this better than buying meal worms 20 at a time every few days so this is awesome
I feed them right away out of the freezer usually sprinkled on eggfood (or alone in a dish). They are dead and thaw quickly and they will also begin to degrade so only feed what you need for 2-4 hours and then feed fresh. For mealworms, get the mini worms and keep them in a cool spot. Many fridge temps are too cold. Small Wine fridge works well or find a natural cool spot. Give them source of water, like cucumber slice or even wet paper towel. Remove from fridge every 3 days or so and let them warm up eat and hydrate. Then back to fridge. They will last a long time. Easily bought in bulk online
Another fine and educational video. You do this better than anyone else I have found.
Thanks Robert!
Thanks for the tio ordering them asap
Really helpful video. Thank you 🙏
Awesome video maybe now I can get my orange breasted waxbills to breed for me
I would be very interested to know what you find out!

None of my birds eat the pupae stage in the experiments I have done.

They are reptile feeder trays I got on amazon. Love them!
Is it possible for me to order ,from the same supplier maybe as I'm in south Africa
You may have better options there but I am quite sure they can’t ship live larvae overseas. the company is Arbico Organics in US. You can always ask.
Maybe I missed it in the video, but how long are the frozen worms good for? As in shelf life or whatever it would be called frozen in the freezer?
I don’t know the longest shelf life but I have frozen some at beginning of the year and still using what 9 months later.

Berapa kali dalam 1 minggu anda memberi nya ulat?
These I only give when parents feeding chicks.
@@Echosaviary saya punya 1 pasang. Setiap hari saya sediakan makanan serangga.
Apa ini bisa menjadi buruk?
sorry, I can’t translate your question….
Don't give extra fooding such worm or larva too much to birds, it can cause a serious problems to their eyes and fathers if they eat it too much
Which bird species are your referring to?
