CRF300L | Putting Kenda's DOT Approved Knobbys to the Test // Southwick II & Trakmaster II.

- Finally got some DOT Approved knobbys on the 300L. Went out to my local single track and put the Southwick II and Trakmaster II to the test. Eventually I will put up a long term review on these tires and let you know how they manage with a mix of road/off-road riding.

Most impressive 300 L video I've seen yet. Shows just how capable the 300 can be. 👍
All about the rider.
If you need a fast bike to go fast, you’re actually slow, it’s all about momentum and maintaining it with skill
Other UA-camrs: the 300L is for beginners
This guy: hold my coffee
🤣🤣
My Man!! U really unlocked the Cheat Code for these Dual Sports. The 100-100 Trakmaster is the best and lightest tire for these! Iv been telling people for years, nobody would agree. Fumb Duckers throw a 120-100 D606 on which is almost 5lbs heavier then complain that the bike is under powered. An AL rear sprocket and MX chain shaves another 2lbs off the rear it adds zip to these motors too.
The TrakMaster II is a direct copy of the old Dunlop D752 which was the best offroad tire I've ever owned. Def a best buy!
I hope your channel blows up man. This is the type of stuff dual sport riders need to see. Your insights on tires/performance products on these type of bikes will be so much more beneficial to the guys who ride their dual sports hard. Back when I had my wr250r it was tough to find any channels that you could trust the opinion of as they usually were beginner/low skill riders. It's hard to take reviews seriously when they don't have anything to compare to or aren't really pushing the bikes like I would be. I don't have one anymore and just ride strictly mx and single track but watching these vids makes me want to add another to the garage!
Couldn’t agree more!
Thanks Brett, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it informative!
I think the most impressive part of this video is how you were able to talk the entire time while going through the single track...
That's the most impressive riding I have seen on the 300L on youtube to date. That video had me stressed out the whole time... Awesome riding!
Thanks! 👊✊
This looks like 99% rider, 1% tire. Beautiful area.
This is the best channel pertaining to the 300L. Moving up from the 250L and the mods you do in incremental stages is really informative. Also, you're a very skilled rider with some nice testing grounds.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it!
Awesome video! I have a Beta 390 RR-S and love that you are doing the same type of riding that I like to do - pushing hard on the dirt and only going street legal to get you between trails.
Thanks man!
Lovin your channel, it's great to watch you push that bike and I look forward to your mods.
I'm so pleased that someone at your skill level can show us what the Honda can really do.
Much love UK..
Thanks Dave, I really appreciate the support. Glad you enjoy the channel!
Man you are pretty skilled, love that you put that crf to good use. Bike seems perfect for you. Keep it up, left you a sub.
Thanks Philipp!
Dude you are having all the fun! I have the 300l Rally. Wish I had the skills to ride like this though. Awesome video! Cheers from the USA. 👍
👍👍 awesome tire choice. Great entertainment factor
Thanks 👍
you're a hell of a rider mate
Yeeeww! Testing the limits!
Man, you can rip on that 300L! I love my Kenda Trakmaster 2 rear. I run 110/100/18 and seems to run well. I have Shinko MX216 90/90/21 front and seems to be a great all around tire. I just changed out both tires (had 1500 miles on them) I run 50/50 dirt/pavement and both had life left but the front was starting to wear like wedges on the center lugs and rear wore perfectly and still had +1/4” left.
I’ll have to try the Southwick 2 front or Millville next time…still sticking with the Trakmaster 2 rear for now. Just hard to beat that performance for the price and still be DOT rated. Thanks for the info!! Great riding!
Thanks Matt! I have heard good things about the Shinko tires, I will have to get my hands on some. Yeah the Trakmaster I had on the front of my 250L was beginning to scallop as well.
I had a Millville on my 450L for a while. I ride in upper MI and northern WI, which is similar to Ontario. I never could get the front to settle. I went back to my tried and true IRC TR8.
Your ability to ride hard and talk is incredible
Freaking killed it my guy.
Great ride. I run the mt16 it fairly good . I have been looking for a sand tire
Good information from and experienced rider. Just listening to you riding up some of those hills I'm thinking you could try a size up on the rear for your next tire change. Judging from your lean angles and looking at the speedometer that Southwick is pure glue for a street legal tire.
Yeah, I think I could probably get away with a 110 width on the rear.
Darn man you can ride that bike well 😁👌 keep well Mate 😎🍺🍺
Thanks Jeff!
Nice videos good pace meet you on the trails today big guy on 2023 KTM 300 XC-W was a little burnt out today I also have a channel
Yeah man, great meeting you both. Ill have to check it out!
Careful with that rear TM on wet pavement. It was sketchy has hell on my 450L. Downright scary. It also chunked a few knobs. And I bet you’ll like the Millville front. I did.
Brother where’s that place !? Looks great!! And awesome skills bro! Your fire! 🔥🔥🤟🏼🤟🏼
Fastest guy ever on a 300L
Hi sleep Coffee Ride, do you know how long they last on the streets? Qnd did you have to re-gear because of the diameter?. Super video, i love the 300l and by the way if youre looking for good and great looking hand gard i have the acerbis x factory on mine and they are gorgeous!!!! Dont stop the great content. Cheers!!!
Hey Nassim, thanks for the support! I don't have much time on these tires on the road yet, however with them being primarily a MX tire I don't imagine they will wear nicely with much road riding. As I have had a few questions on this subject keep an eye out for a "shorts" video where I will post about the long term life of these tires.
I really feel like you should become Honda's version of KTMs Chris Birch.
That would be so Rad, Thanks!
Great ride and excellent video. I was waiting to hear you complain about the soft suspension, but you kept it all about the tires. Are you planning any suspension upgrades?
Hey Rick, thank you and glad you enjoyed the video.
Yes, suspension upgrades are on the way!
If someone buys these tires, how close to 'as fast as you' will they be???
No guarantees. lol
Any quick commentary on the road manners of these two tires? Nice riding BTW
I only just put this tire on so I don't have to much time with it on the pavement. What I can say is that in the short rides I have done it compares quite similar to the Trakmaster front. Both these tires are just fine on tarmac as long as you have no interest on pushing the limits on the road, the tall knobs will begin to get wobbly at speed. If you are like me and ride quite conservativly on the street and take every chance to get on dirt you won't be disappointed. Also, as this is an aggressive off road tire there will be some road noise.
This is exactly what I always think my riding footage is going to look like.... never the case lol
out for a rip eh? nice !
Hey Sean, how are you doing (bad uncle Bill here)?
Same thoughts on the front Trackmaster 2. Really need to keep it in a rut or it slides.
YOU ABSOLUTELY RIP! Very impressive. Is that bike still with stock suspension?
Thanks man! Yes, in this video the 300l still has stock suspension.
Really enjoying the content and like how you actually ride hard here.
I'm a beginner looking into this or the KLX300 and while the Honda seems to speak to me, I keep seeing so much negativity surrounding that suspension. So I gotta ask.
For someone who's going to be off-road most times and really just cruise around on the dirt, maybe push it here and there and never do anything more than some rocky rooty stuff with no desire to jump the thing, how would the stock setup be for someone who weighs 180 without gear?
Stuck between just saving the extra grand to buy this, build my skills and maybe upgrade later with the same suspension mods you did for a tad over a grand and have a better setup than both stock or just buy the Kawasaki from the get go.
That little 300 going to need suspension service, you beating the crap out of it.
Full rebuildable K-Tech kit installed! ua-cam.com/video/EvmXq9awM1A/v-deo.html
I saw that later, makes more sense the bike riding so well
What suspension is on your 300L. I'm trying to determine how much is tires and how much is do to other mods
The suspension on my 300l is bone stock.
dude! you rip!!!
nice video. i put a set of the dunlop geomax en91 on my 300l. whole different bike now coming from the tusk dual sport tires i had on previously. i went with a 90/90 front and a 140/80 rear. running 12 psi and they really hook up nicely off road single track trails. also swapped out the rear sprocket 40t for a 45t. how would these compare to the dunlop geomax en91s?
Hey Jason, I think in this super loose terrain the Southwick is the winner. However considering the EN 91 in an all around Enduro competition tire I think its better pegged against the Millville II. Its on my list to get both these tires on the 300L and compare.
Hi, I have just come across your channel and I’m finding it excellent. Very interested in your tyre reviews and thoughts. I have a 2020 CRF250L running Pirelli MT21s, they have been super on the road but there just about done so need to replace them, I’m thinking about getting something a little better for the trails I have here in North Wales 🏴 (Rocks, gravel and some mud) so any information reviews and thoughts are greatly appreciated 👍
Hey Ian, glad to hear you are enjoying the channel! It sounds like you have some similar terrain to the deciduous forests around here. Have you had a chance to try the Trakmaster II front? the Dunlop EN91 front might be a good option as well.
Did you run the trackmaster on the road at all? Not 100% sure I can get kenda tyres here in the UK but I’ll take a look. Have you ever ran Michelin trackers?? Look similar to the trackmaster
@@iangriffiths9930 Actually I think that Michelin Tracker looks like a better tire than the Kenda, based on the tread pattern.
Apologies I should have thanked you for your reply before. Anyway very interesting that you think the tracker maybe a better tyre, gives me a little more confidence to try them. I think getting tyres that match the terrain you ride is important but there isn’t many people who address this aspect. I think you might be the first person to highlight the terrain in your review/impressions of a tyre 👍
I’d say he’s on FFD except for 2 bits of evidence: 1) the angle he’s hitting in the corners. 2) the breathing!
More likes and comments for you. Lots of watch time too.
Much appreciated! 👊✊
Do you think you could do enduro with the 300l
You mentioned the en91 on your 450 .Do you recall how the road manners were ? Do little info about those .
I used to run a 100 trak master on my klx and it was awesome with one exception . Its carcass was so soft . I had a tube let go on the hwy at about 100kph and I barely kept the bike upright while getting it to the shoulder . I might have to revisit this tire …
What psi were u running? Im about to put a 100-100 on my klx 300. Iv had the 110 on a WR250F and could tell it was a little soft. I popped 1 at 8 psi but cuz I was doing 60mph and hit a big G-Out. At 10 I never popped a tube but that 110 has way more sidewall.
@@tieoneon1614 I was running around 18 psi
How bad are they on the road I bought a 250l and they came with a set of these not on the bike I'm new to riding and drive on the street a good amount is it dangerous for me to but them on my bike next?
Hey Robert, I haven't had much time on the street with these tires but with the time I have had I would say they are comparable to the Trakmaster front. Now I have hade some time with the Trakmasters on the street and as long as you're not looking to really push the limits they ride just fine, but do make some noise. Keep in mind these are a 90% off-road 10% on road tire, so depending on how much street or dirt you are looking to ride you might be better off with a different tire and just selling the ones you have.
Have you tried the Millville yet? I just bought a CRF300L and think I'm gonna try that tyre on the front. I notice the Trakmaster isn't even listed on Kenda's website, has it been discontinued and replaced by something else?
I haven't tried the Millville yet, but its definitely on my list! Trakmaster II should still be there, it was the last time I checked anyway.
@@patoneill555 I ended up going with the Michelin Tracker front and rear - just took it for a first test ride and really impressed with it, does great in the mud and soft stuff, and decent on tarmac too, plus I've heard they lasts for miles. Seems a very popular choice on CRF's according to my tyre shop!
Am I seeing you hit 50mph in 2nd gear? Riiipin!!
Haha, not quite. As a resident of the great white north these numbers are in KPH. But I appreciate the support!!
@@patoneill555 Ahhh.. that makes sense 😂
What psi are you running in the tyres mate?
I run 12psi
Where is this place ? such a nice park.
Sorry Claud, this is not a public spot.
@@patoneill555 Enjoy it tho very nice
Does changing the tire size mess up the speedo/odometer?
Nope
Yes, exactly a skinny tire is often best... tires got fat because fat tires sell bikes off the show room floor
How did you get that low down thumbnail shot ?
That would take a lot of time to type, maybe a video though!
You could present your own tv programme. Your apprenticeship is completed. Time to fly high now.
Haha, thanks!!!!!
Great videos, watching them all. You should arrange tours. I have a cottage on atkins lake. Pop by for a beer. Is your store for real, or is it a copy Chinese rip off. Any way drop me a line I think I know where that gravel pit is. Just don’t know how to get into it. Have a great day. Drop me a line thanks.
Thanks, man! What store are you referring to? I have some merch on the way, but it's not ready yet.
There’s a store under sleep coffee ride, tees and mugs merch.
@@user-lb1vs1sv6z That's mine! Sleepcoffeeride.com
Anyway I watch almost every day lol. Very well presented and I kinda know the area
@W.S.Safety Technologies Mail Thnanks, greatly appreciated!! We should get out for a ride 👊✊️
How much did you weight in this video? You flipped the bike so easily.
I was about 180lbs with gear in this video.
Is your speedo set in km/h? If not you hit 50mph in those tight trails like an absolute animal 🤣🤣🤣
Stock suspension and gearing?
Yep!
@@patoneill555 awesome
Greats videos, I like your content!! Could you activate the subtitles, please?? Thanks ;)
Done, UA-cam says it might take a bit before they are available.
Thanks Javier!
Thinking about getting a crf300l I want tires that’s more towards trails and potentially have zero issues on a local mx track and such but will have no issues on the road for short rides 15-25 miles max on pavement I know it’s a hard medium to find but any suggestions ? Im 6’3 190lb
Also I do plan on putting k tech rear suspension on it and possibly a front re valve kit if I need it
Also you got yourself another sub your build is what I want mainly
Thanks Nathan, I really appreciate the support! What kind of dirt is in your area? Soft, Hard or intermediate?
@@patoneill555 intermediate
@@nathanthomas7475 I would recommend one of these two options: Kenda Washougal II on the front with a Trakmaster on the rear, or a set of Dunlop EN91s. Both of these options are competition based tires (except Trakmaster) and are all DOT approved.
@@patoneill555 thank you !
Brother where’s that place !? Looks great!! And awesome skills bro! Your fire! 🔥🔥🤟🏼🤟🏼
