New Grosjean 3D Crash Animation | F1 2020 Bahrain GP

- Unseen onboards, alternative angles, full speed and slow motion! A new 3D reconstruction of Romain Grosjean's insane fireball crash at the Formula 1 2020 Bahrain GP.
Watching it live, I could not explain what had happened, so I created a "simple" animation ( • Grosjean 3D Crash Anim... ) back in december. This video shows a more realistic render, including onboard and drivers eyes (helmet) POV. Enjoy the crashalong!
Looks familiar? In January, Canal Plus approached me to work on a new animation in high quality for their documentary "Retour de flammes". This video is a slightly adapted version to see the collision with Daniil Kvyat and position of Kevin Magnussen better.
Watch the documentary on myCanal: www.canalplus.com/sport/retou...
Or go to crashalong.com/grosjean-3d-cr... to see the full animation from the documentary.

Disclaimer:
At some moments during the reconstruction, I had to make educated guesses about the dynamics of the car and barrier. It is not simulated and I do not claim that the animation is 100% accurate. It is based on the experience of a simple mechanical engineer with a fetish for crashes.

More different angles of normal speed or slow motion? Let me know what you prefer for future videos!
Next: Ralf Schumacher 2002 Australia Crash
I enjoyed the mix of both in this video. First showed the crash in real time from different perspectives and than some closer views in slow motion. I prefer the way as it is in this video.
Next Michael schumacher great britain crash
Susuka 2014 fatal crash
Another Next: Nikita Mazepin 2021 Bahrain GP Crash
This one is much more detailed than the first one
true
Yeah and that’s saying a lot
Your right
Now if you compare the cgi version and the real one...
Im impressed with the driver pov in the ball of fire there at 0:45
This really puts into perspective how important the Halo is.
If the Halo didn't exist, Romain would've died.
or could have badly injured like niki lauda in '76
@@Curryscammer that barrier came straight for his face. If a spring would break a helmet, a barrier would 100% break more than it
@@jeffreytenthije ohhhhhh i didn't payed too much attention to this. now i see
bad crash, bud still its his own falt he is a idiot in a f1 car
@@bereal4253 dude ever heard of a blind spot? Otherwise, go watch Palmer's analysis on the official f1 channel cuz he explains the entire domino effect (unlike in this simulation with just 3 cars)
67G! The worst F1 crash in the last decade, no doubt.
Thank you for your 3D animation, you put a lot of work in these videos.
I mean there was jules bianchi and I'd say that had a worse outcome
@@snonsig2688 I mean, worst non fatal crash
Maybe checo in monaco in 2011. But i guess this had fire so...
But it was 53G
@@Daniel-wj9rz as much as I know there were new investigations and they said it was 67g
I loved the focus on the halo as it deflected the armco away from Romain's head. This video is the best demonstration I've seen that the halo can and does save lives.
Yeah, this proves along with other crashes involving the halo saving lives is proof that the Halo, although not visually pleasing, is very important, the halo is the physical definition of function over form
@@josuegtr1034 Totally agree!
I've come to like the look of the Halo. At first thought it was dumb but I mean.... Something that can plow through material and save a dudes head? Gave me a huge amount of respect for that thing. Now I feel it's just part of how the car should look after it demonstrated itself for us multiple times
if it werent for the halo, it wouldnt have been the halo creating a hole for grosjeans head but grosjeans head creating a hole for the car...
Damn his head really would have been smashed without the halo, so incredibly lucky, such a horrific crash but amazing how Good safety has become.
This! Literally just a few years ago, there would not have been a halo on that car.
@ItsLiam42_2013 You don't care about their safety. If your life was on the line it'd be a different story.
Amazing how bad track safety is.
@ItsLiam42_2013 then don't watch racing?
@ItsLiam42_2013 Are you saying that you would have love to see Romain dead????
First halo saved Leclerc
Then halo saved Grosjean (this video) halo saved Bottas (2021 emilia romagna)
Edit:
Now halo saved hamilton (2021 monza)
And also Zhou (2022 silverstone)
Leclerc is up for discussion Bottas I don't think the halo prevented any thing. Grosjean definitely is saved by the halo. Nevertheless although it is not my favourite thing it has improved the safety and that is what matters.
@@betrandguesclin the halo pre vented Russell's wheel if the halo wouldnt be there the wheel wouldve hit his head and he could've possible died
@@tiax0340 The wheel already hit the side of the car also so that would already have deflected the wheel from his head. Just because it hit the halo doesn't mean it would have hit his head.
Mugello last year?
Now halo saved Verstappen at Silverstone
There was some confusion the past few week when Canal+ released their documentary a month ago. I created that animation for them and cannot show that particular video on UA-cam, but it is on my new website (crashalong.com)! This is a new video based on the same 3D scene, that I am allowed to show you here!
Right after the release of the Canal+ docu, a tweet spread containing an illegal copy of the animation parts. It contained FOM footage, pissing off bunch of people, and hence has been removed from twitter by the canal plus group. So a lot of news articles now refer to that tweet with a blocked video. They can refer to this video if they like to correct their articles with a video of only the animation, or refer to the canal plus documentary as is done in the description of this video!
Yes
This is so incredibly well made, this puts an entire new perspective on the crash.
Once again, you absolutely delivered. Kudos to you, Crashalong. ❤️🙌
1:06 once again.....praise the Halo!!!
Yes, his head wouldve been crushed without the Halo
0:44 the driver's POV is really impressive that's a lot of work you deserve many more subscribers
There are some professionals out there who could learn a lot from you! Especially how to do fire! Also, yet another amazing example of how the Halo saved his life, thank god
Woah that puts things into a whole new perspective. Cant wait to see what else will come to your channel in the future
Wow, this is absolutely incredible content! The first person view is absolutely terrifying.
But this animation really shows how the halo and the survival cell work on a mechanical level... moreso than anything else I've seen. I think the Halo naysayers have mostly backed down by now but still just a really good practical demonstration.
It's brutal to think about how this crash would have looked if that was a totally open cockpit like pre-halo.
Serious quality (and I think important) content! Hope to see more
The onboard is unbeliveable!!!!! Amazing work well done
Amazing work!! Thank you
Man omg what a good simulation! Love your videos!
Now that you told me you made this in blender, honestly I would pay £100 for a tutorial these are outstanding!
In a few months I hopefully can dedicate more time and post more insights!
@@Crashalong OMG! That was scary! But this is better than your first take on this crash. Nice work!!!
To say you made a superb video is an understatement !!!
Congratulations for the extreme accuracy in the attention to detail !
I am amazed !
the 3 people that actually read your description found gold at the last sentence lol
Epic Video! I really like the music. Fits very well! 👌
amazing work ! enjoyed it
Excellent work, much appreciated😉👌
Third time he uploads a video of this but it’s prob still going to be amazing
I promise this is the final one from Grosjean! ;p
@@Crashalong it’s fine, I would watch any of these because they’re so cool

Wow amazing graphics. I love how accurate it is and the view from the cockpit is amazing.
Wow! congrats for that animation it is amazing!
Amazing reconstruction, very well done
Excellent work!
Amazing job!
I wasn't aware how sturdy the halo really is until you demonstrated it. Guess the halo's a keeper for a long, long time. Your work deserves attention! People who share this should respect and mention you.
Keep it up man!
Great job dude.
Yeh ur money was well spent with that pc. Looks waaaaaayyy better
Crashalong I like how you put the full onboard
wow. good job. that's amazing
This an excellent video
Great video, crazy accident.
Your skills.... Oh my god.... Those videos are Amazing
Holy crap this much realist!
The fact that the halo helped him survived that is insane
Ruddy hell, that gave me goosebumps! Great musical choice as well
You Made it so realistic
great animation well done! shows u how the halo saved his life! and it didnt even bend or break super strong great footage!
incridible work
The POV of fire surrounding the driver is chilling..
Wow. That halo was a GODSEND…..holy smokes.
Excelente video
there is just no way to survive this ....... and then he walk out of it unreal
Your animation is fucking good. AWESOME
Is this edited Because It's Amazing It blew me away I was that Amazed
Wow nice animation...Thank You!
How ever this guy was so so so lucky.
It had to be a fatal...😐
Its not just luck he had the halo.
Do have a tutorial on how to make those animations those are sick brother!
It consists out of a lot of different disciplines I gained experience with over some years. I will refine the process in the next months with new crashes and plan to make a video on the workflow in July or August
Very impressive work!
Wow this is more detailed then the last one(wich is your first video)
This guy deserves a sub
The first barrier pole deflect the car further left, the deforming nose cone did its job. The second pole failed and let the tub goes under, Halo worked. The third pole break the car in two, minus the punctured tank, the sidepod impact area worked. The effort they put into F1 safety nowadays in fascinating indeed.
And there is a lot more that worked that day. The fire proof suit kept him safe from the flames. The Hans device in combination with the seat saved him from being knocked out or worse. The helmet saved him from smoke Inhalation. The medical car was there within seconda. Exit Training helped him get out as quickly as possible. His survival is the results of decades of saftey improvements
Just shows how much the halo saved grosjean from having his head sliced of by the impact, I was against the halo when they brought it in, but I hold my hand up I was wrong, it saved grosjeans life .
very very cool
Superb
Insane how he walked away🙏
I still don't know how he survived this crash
There's been many racing crashes but 2 stick in my mind, this one and Billy Monger's F4 crash where he lost his legs, frightening how quick things can go wrong.
A miraculous combination of things working perfectly and other things failing catastrophically.
Amazing. I ❤ this halo. Saves drivers from becoming angels.
How the Halo device pushed up that undoubtedly decapitating barrier guard railing is a thing of beauty!
This video is extremely well done and highly informative. Cannot argue with what is presented here. Another driver goes home that night to his loved ones, instead of going toe-tagged to the morgue.
bro should hire to f1 animation
Watching the onboard camera is scary as hell😰
What software do you use for this? Impressive animation, great work man.
He made this in Blender.
Crazy how close that bar that actually split the car was to taking him with it...
The rendering quality is awesome.
How long did it take?
Without the halo, Grosjean's head wouldn't have been attached to his body any longer.
Could you do this with other crashes? Very good by the way.
That's the plan!
Great animation great analysis great music. Well done lads!!!
Wow he was definitely saved by the halo, lucky guy
I didn't like them when they first came out with them because I thought they would obstruct the drivers view. But in this instance, it obviously saved him from getting decapitated by the top guard rail.
But he was facing the other way
Uau isso está simplesmente incrível
The scary thing about this crash is that barrier was in the same place in 2004 when the race made it's debut. If it was unsafe when this crash happened it had essentially been unsafe for 15 years but we didn't know it was until 2020
Can you do Marcus erricson's monza crash?
I think he will do
yesssss
even in 3D it looks like a miracle...
Watching this video, then your one featuring Alonso's crash in Australia, it amazes me how Fernando was unhurt. Romain is so lucky. But as an adrenaline junkie, he went and raced in Indy-cars !!!!
this rlly makes it so you can see how good the halo is
For those who want a clear analysis, basically, the car slit and caught on fire because the guard rail plunged the velocity of the chassis that the rear of the car didn’t lose any speed. So when the cockpit lost speed, the rear was still going 100+ km/h and it fell of because it got swung so quick and violent, almost as violent as the 1976 Nürburgring. After that, the collision between the axels, suspension, the transmission, and the guard rail caused a fire. Hope this helps!
Now I know why the fuel tank exploded. There must have been debris or barrier hit the fuel tank from the side. So before the back of the car could split(safety precaution, the fuel tank already exploded.
Actually they said afterwards that the tank was ok and not all the fuel burned there. But one of the tank's filler caps was found to be missing after the crash, it either popped out or was ripped in the impact, and so, some of the fuel fell off the car through that... :(
Could you do the first corner crash, 2012 spa? Very good recreation your skills are awesome.
It’s a great and legendary crash! But I think all available angles makes it well documented and all onboard are available. I rather do a crash that has some mystery to it, or where onboards were never shown. But if a suggestion gets a lot of likes I will definitely look into it!
@@Crashalong oh yeah I fully understand that! Was just curious to see groeseans point of view. But yes not worry’s. Keep up the good work!
I actually think that we could use a bit more of protection on the side of the gap of the halo. The driver's line of sight is still pretty lower compared to the top side of the halo

No matter how many times I've seen this, even knowing that Grosjean got out of this alive, it's still chilling to watch. And infuriating.
Wow!
That's very insteresting, but can u do sennas crash?
I like them both
it's crazy this happens in only 1 second
I love DRIES!!!!! x3
These are amazing but what program do you use for these?
It's all Blender!
Without that halo he would have a halo. He is master chief
@BRAVO 276 without the Halo(device)he would be dead 😇
Without the Halo he would have a circle shaped orbital station?
We need these crash physics in game
This looks just bit lower than irl it is magnificent
Very very style
The halo really is a life saver.
nice vid, can you make a tutorial on these 3d animation
This feels more like the crash then the crash felt like the crash
