I am lucky that my depression has never caused the situation you are helping with however I want to thank you for doing this in a judgement free manner. Most people do not understand that there are times when it is just more than we can handle just getting out of bed.

There’s a Scandinavian woman cleaner who uses stuff called Power Paste. It gets stains out of things that I would not have believed possible. I wonder if it could have got the blue out of the bottom of that bathtub.

I also can recommend Scrub Mommy and Daddy. I have both of them, and they are great. I don't have the original power paste, as I haven't seen it in my country, but something similar. And with the tools I finally got my sink clean. Of course they do much advertising for that, yet that them are good isn't a lie.

Anyone who can tackle tough jobs like this deserves a medal. I won’t judge but people such as this need professional help. You know that. Setting an example of order and cleanliness is a worthy goal but underlying mental problems are what’s causing this chaos and will continue to do so.

Has to be disheartening to see all your hard work totally destroyed time after time. My heart hurts for the residents dealing with depression and maybe other things. I never got cigarette smell out of house I bought after painting every room, putting in new carpet, and deep cleaning every couple of weeks. You are a special person to help this family. God bless you! Praying for the residents!

I remember hearing that the smoke can seep into the underlayers of wallpaper, maybe even the walls depending on materials. In that case the only way to get rid of it is to take off the wallpaper, maybe install or use a special blocking material, and then redo the wallpapering/painting. And the same can happen to the ceilings, unfortunately.

I really commend you for returning to a place that you'd already cleared and cleaned. I don't think I would have had the patience, which says a lot about me!. I struggle with depression and anxiety myself, and this year has been rough. However, although my house is untidy, I always make sure that the rubbish is put in the dustbin and my bathroom is clean. I have to put the rubbish out because I can't stand the smell, and I have a bit of a control thing about rubbish. My bathroom is always clean, because I spend a LOT of time in it, with IBS-D.
For myself, I know that if these two things aren't done, I'm in a really bad place. It helps me that I have those two markers.
However, I also know quite a few people who can't do those things. Knowing how the state of the home can indicate the state of mental health, its important to keep an eye on things, especially if you notice that someone's home has deteriorated beyond what they usually have. Some quiet and calm questions about how they're feeling and really listening to the answers could help them, but only if they're lovingly asked and completely without judgement.
It's so easy, especially following what we've all been through, to accept things at face value, but please, if you think something is wrong, please ask them. Just a simple how are you. If they don't want to talk at that time, don't push them, just let them know you're ready to listen if they need you.
All forms of mental health issues, including hoarding disorder, need treating with compassion and support. Please be kind.

Hi there. I’m sorry for your ongoing depression and anxiety. You may not realize it, but you were just very judgmental. Basically implying that, even with depression, people should be able to get their garbage out and keep their bathrooms clean. Sadly there are situations and types of depression and mental health disorders where this can be a serious problem. Hoarding disorder is one of them. And you’re right, not everyone can and should try to help them. You can do more harm than good depending on how you approach the person and the clean-up. There is no place for Judgement and Comparison when dealing with people struggling with these situations. I hope that you have a better understanding now. We are all just trying to figure out this crazy world, right? Take care and be well!

@@barbanderson2422 hello. Thank you for pointing out how my post came across. I really did not mean for it to come across like that, so I've amended my original post. I hope it makes more sense now. I have hoarders in my family, and I'm not sure if family history can predispose someone to being a hoarder. But you're right; kindness and compassion is key. Love to you and yours xx

I just came across your channel. First, I really admire you for trying to help these people. Great job! If there’s a window anywhere else in that apartment, open it so fresh air can come in and lessen the strong odor of cleaning products. Also, use a hand held steamer instead of harsh chemicals. Or even just a kettle with hot water to pour on some surfaces to clean with a cleaning cloth. Some of those steamers have a few attachments to get into small crevices and It also kills bacteria more than cleaning products and not so bad to inhale.. maybe just a steam facial! Lol 😁

I learned years ago an easy all purpose cleaner is 1 Tablespoon liquid laundry soap, 2 Tablespoons dish soap and warm water in a big spray bottle. Shake it up. This can be used on anything. If you spray it on a dirty wall, the dirt will run down. I have used a Libby mop with Lemon floor cleaner to clean walls of a smokers apt. Also when I was a kid, I helped my Grandma to clean yellow smoker walls with warm bleach water. I no longer use bleach in cleaning due to sensitivities. I also have a small steam cleaner for cleaning with less chemicals.

There are other video’s of people cleaning up a hoarders house where they do clean every part of the home from top to bottom. Wow! What did you use to get the ring off the inside of the toilet bowl? Is that a special kind of brush? It looks like it might be a Libman Heavy Duty scrub brush. I always have to use a pumice bar on it.

I have a friend who’s a extremely heavy smoker, everything is brown with nicotine. I once washed her bathroom windows and the water was brown. Smokers can’t smell how bad they and there home smell’s, they’re immune to it

So true! My husband smoked in our house when we first got married. When he quit, the smell really bothered him.
We cleaned the carpets, furniture, cleaned and painted the walls which were disgusting. Finally got the smell out of our house! That was 30 years ago and no one has smoked in our house since!

If anyone cleans places regularly that has smell, get a commercial ozone generator. Worth the money. Or hire a clean up company to just drop one off for a couple days and pay the rental. Gets rid of ANY smell as long as the source is removed. Mildew, smoke, oils, etc.

Don't worry, I can vividly smell that house. My exgf and her family were smokers, she ended up moving into her old family home after we broke up. I helped her move in and I can't describe the smell of a house that 4 people have smoked in constantly for 30 years

Those poor cats have to smell that tar and nicotine daily. It is hard for a small animal to breathe that stuff. They will probably get ill and die before their time. No kidding. That is pure and simple animal cruelty. Makes me very upset!

My family and I are in dire straights. My husband of 28 years was severely injured back at the end of June 2022 and he had emergency brain surgery so he lost his ability to ever work or do anything right now or for next 2-3 years. This being said, we were homeless from Jan 02, 2022 to 06/24/22 living in a 20 year old trailer that has since fallen apart. Table bed broke, counter where sink and stove were broken apart, shower leaked very badly and toilet did not work. Anyway, when my husband was hurt, it happened while he was at work. So his company has put me, his wife, and our 3 kids and 2 cats, into hotel rooms. We are trying so hard to save money so we can rent an apartment or a house. We are thinking we will be getting an apartment within the next 30 days. I have learned so much from all of you UA-cam ladies and I have told our sons that we are going to make our new home ready for daddy to come home too and it will be 100% cleaned every single day and thankfully, none of us smoke. My mom has smoked since she was 13 and she is in a nursing home at age 81 and doing remarkably well. But growing up with her smoking was bad for us and also good for us. If she was out of cigarettes she beat us up!!! Plus she smoked inside and the walls of her house were brown, her car was broken inside and everything smelled so bad!!!!

Are they going to continue to keep up all your hard work after you’re done? I completely understand depression and letting your house get out of hand, but throwing cigarette butts all over the house/floor is just gross and lazy in my opinion 🤷🏻‍♀️ and if they have cats, that’s very sad. What if they eat them. They could get so sick. I’m not trying to be be rude. Some comments come across rude as you can’t really judge the tone of a person :) you did a great job though!

    • @Newt1981

I also wonder. I'm not judging either because I know how hard it can be. But it does make me sad that they force their pets to live like that as well. I really hope they can get more help and improve their habits for the sake of themselves as well as the living beings in their care. The pets deserve better too

I have a question. Well, a couple questions. You do a LOT of work there. Wouldn’t it be ideal if the homeowners who created the mess helped you clean it? Would they be more motivated to keep it up if they have invested their own sweat and time into it? Also, did they quit smoking? Because otherwise all that nasty residue will be back in no time.
