  • After realizing I had not done a video on this species I go into detail as to why this is a great landscape Palm for Central and South Florida. It has all the abilities to acclimate to humid subtropical weather in Florida and the warmer Mediterranean climates around the world.

    I want to transplant a KO that has one foot of clear trunk from my back yard to the front. I want it to fill a spot where a queen palm was dying of Wilt. Any advice on transplanting this would be greatly appreciated. Located in Merritt Island.

    Anyone know what the rough estimate of the crown width will generally be as it matures?

    How do you even find these filed grown? Unfortunately so many growers near me in south cen fl grow only the ususals (foxtails, arecas, etc). I would easily pay $300 for one of those that size if it can take a frost and looks that tropical.

      You'll have to go to the Miami area for a field grown specimen

      @@TheCfkingfish I was afraid you'd say that. I don't want another 3 hour pilgrimage to homestead 😂😅

    Does the Flame thrower Palm have similar climate and growing characteristics as this palm?
    I just picked up a 30 gal size and am new to palm growing.

      I just planted 2 Flame Throw palms (Chambeyronia macrocarpa and Chambeyronia hookeri) last summer at my home in San Diego. They were in 15 gallon pots, so smaller than your 30 gallon. At least at this size, they are extremely slow growing. So far I have only seen the spears growing, but there has been no new leaf yet after 5-6 months. Talk about slow!!! I bought the hookeri with a red leaf and the red faded after about 2 weeks. The macrocarpa is the one that has had a lot of growth to the length of the spear, but no leaf has emerged yet. I am guessing its growth has slowed down now that we are in winter and the nights get into the upper 30's to mid 40's. I am looking forward to how they do next spring. I was watching this video because I just purchased 2 Kentiopsis oliviformis palms and will be planting these on my hillsides too. I really like the palms of New Caledonia. They are beautiful and their thick leaves seem to make them a little more cold hardy. I look forward to my palms getting much taller in 5-10 years. I am not sure what it is about the New Caledonia and Australia region, but they seem to have some of my most favorite palms.

    What’s the best way to germinate these seeds, I have read it could take six months to a year to germinate?

      A lot of patience and medium heat are the key. 6 months is around average.

    Anyone know if any nurseries in Tampa that sell these? I would really like one.

      You can probably find some at West Coast Tropicals in Seminole, tell him I sent you. If you want a specimen, my friend Ken delivers from Miami occasionally, one the size of the smaller palm in the video would be about $200 delivered (estimating).

      I know about a guy named Ken from Kens Palm trees in St. Pete. I see him every spring for my palm trees.
      I will check out West Coast Tropicals. Thank you so much for your help.

    What temperature should I keep the seeds at?

    • @TheCfkingfish
      @TheCfkingfish  5 років тому +1

      These don't need as much heat as other species I would say 80 to 85 Fahrenheit.

      The best place is off a mature one growing here in Florida. You can also buy at rarepalmseeds.com, or wait until I can get a good crop! :)
