I agree, it is obvious Norse gods are weaker than greek gods, but what made me sad, is that the pandemic thing affected the development of the gow Ragnarok, it should be a trilogy, the prophecy of the first game should happen and Kratos dies in the arms of Loki as he did to Odin storing his father's souls part, but he would travel back in time with Jormungandr and become Loki as we all know, and closing a few gaps like, become a bee and sting Brok in the eye when he was creating Mjolnir, thus the short handle, cutting Friggs hair, swapping arrows to mistletoe when friends were playing on shooting Baldur when he became immortal and did not know the bad side of Freya spell yet, becoming a giant wolf and dragging Kratos to Midgard, (Faye cannot shapeshift this power Atreus inherit from Zeus), and last but not least, blowing the horn on the first game when he knew he was sick, Odin would know everything and prevent Ragnarok, on the Third game, Kratos would be Ragnarok himself. I'm not surprised Cory Barlog leaved the lead of the game

Think about it. Spartan Rage is actually his normal power. He just suppresses it so he can be a good person. Every time you activate spartan rage you become a boss obliterator and they just can’t handle you till rage runs out. Kratos was constantly in a state of spartan rage in the first 3 games and he still had a hard time. The Greek pantheon was probably the strongest god realm

Spartan rage is not his power, it is the rage of ares that kratos got when he was saved by ares, shows just how powerful ares was compared to many norse gods including thor imo.
If you are familiar with Norse mythology you’ll discover that most of the Norse gods have some sort of injuries or deformities (Odin missing an eye, Tyr with his hand bit off by Fenrir, Hela being half alive and half dead) and none of them are really immortal or invincible which is why I find it to be more relatable compared to Greek mythology
Also, keep in mind that im most myths, Thor is the Norse's main heavy hitter. They usually defaulted to him or Loki solving their issues with trickery. I mean, they needed an army of mortals for Ragnarok while the Greeks had monsters but mostly did things themselves.
The Greek gods ruled over their domains and drew magic from them. Hence the natural disasters and why they will (most likely) be reborn. Hermes isn’t just the god of travellers, he is travelling itself. Poseidon isn’t just the god of the seas, he is the sea itself. That’s why killing them had great consequences

Poseidon is not the sea itself, the sea is Pontus, a primordial. Poseidon death causes the sea to go crazy because Poseidon was needed to tame the sea, but he is not the sea. Also Hermes is not "traveling", he protects travellers. Without Hermes you can still travel normally, but you will probably die by dangerous things without his protection. But in both mythology and god of war is clear that the gods protects their domains, but are not their domains itself.

Mimir is also not from the 9 realms. He's well travelled and has probably heard tales of many different pantheons/realms throughout. They (the pantheons) seem very aware of the others out there.
Mimir is actually from celtic mythology , they might go there first to see how he and odin met , and of course were gonna see atreus eventually need kratos to help him in his giant adventure , wether its to egypt or japanese first
If I remember correctly the original idea for the 4th game was supposed to show both the Norse and Egyptian pantheons coming to Greece and take over after the power vacuum left behind from the Greeks dying. I’m not saying they could have easily beaten the other 2 but it proves the Greek gods had some higher level of power above the Norse and Egyptians that prevented either of them from invading.
I would love this plot idea to be used in the next game. Like Krathos is trying to sort the mess in the 9 realms while gods from other pantheons invade it to take Odin's place, meanwhile Atreas is on his quest to find surviving giants. Because I loved supporting cast of those 2 games, and it would be great to see them once more
Pretty sure that's suppose to be the og plot of GOW3. Instead of building up to Zeus' defeat you beat him and the other Greeks earlier, only for the other pantheons to descend on Greece, their own versions of Kratos in tow.
@@khanoneal6028 I literally did the exact same thing. I was at a friend's house with 4 of us there seeing it for the first time. I beat Poseidon (1st time, without dying, just barely!) And immediately reset the game like, "We are doing that again…right now…Will, you're up" 🤣
@@whysoserious4274 2 was the best game overall in terms of the balance between fighting and puzzles, variety of environments, story, moveset, challenge, etc. But GoW 3 had the sheer epicness the first two games built up into. And wiping out the pantheon is just so very satisfying.
Fun fact: Ares would terrorize Egypt in attempts to antagonize Zeus. God of War 1 official novelization covers that happening with Zeus furious about Ares causing strife. Plus the Egyptian are very much aware of Kratos as confirmed by the prequel comic to God of War 2018. So it’s likely they we’re happy his time in Egypt was brief
Ares was in the greek egypt, while Kratos was in the lands of the egyptian pantheons. The Sisters of Fate also controlled the entire Nile and considered to run it dry and wipe out the civilisation there. I dont think Ra, Osiris and Horus would just tolerate that or Ares either.
@@vlad_47 There is no "greek earth", its just earth. In GOW Egypt, Greece, Scandinavia etc are all on the same planet, just seperated by geography. Kratos simply swam to Egypt on a boat after the events of GOW 3 as seen in the Fallen God comics.

Technically they are the same , they just weren’t translated as well in the ragnarok game with their powers , they tried to give them too many human characteristics in the newer games therefore losing their godly appeal , im sure Santa Monica chose this on purpose to drive their story with more human emotion . technically the olympians are compared to the Aesir gods and the titans are comparable to the giants , if you go throughout all mythology they are so similar in many aspects , sometimes seen very closely to one another ! But as far as the newer games I did kinda want a sense of more power from the gods in ragnarok , but it’s ok they still did a overall great job and made a great game!
Norse gods are not the same. Without special magic the Greeks would wipe them out. Greeks get naturally stronger as they age. Norse gods will lose Immortality if they don't eat apple's
The mythologies came from the same place ultimately. Greco/Roman and Norse/Germanic Mythology (as well as Celtic and Vedic Hindu/Rigveda texts, Balto-Slavic myth, etc) are all of Indo European origin, likely from the steppes of Ukraine/Russia/Moldova
And to further this connection as well…the Valkyries were originally presented much like the Greek Furies. The presentation of them changes by the time of the Viking age however and they seen as a thing to revere rather than be weary of, contrary to the older Germanic variant.

It's been really interesting to see all the points being made for each side, very good stuff. Based on what was potrayed in gow ragnarok, the olympians/greek mythology possess magic that even captivates mimir (the smartest being in their world) and freya (the most capable magic wielding being in their world) to them it's beyond belief and too OP. So in the end and once again based on what was on displayed in the game, the norse gods can match the greeks in raw strength but when it comes to magicall ability, they would overwhelm any norse god displayed in the game with said magical abilities. Once again based on the games so far. i have no doubt in the actual mythologies they would be very evenly matched.
I see many people confusing you talking about powers with strength. Two words easily confused. The Greeks indeed had more power and they displayed it well. Kratos used so many variations of lightening, fire, wind, electric and the power of hope to kill zues and even that it took many tries. Odin doesn't stand a chance Vs that kratos. This kratos is completely nerfd no magic just combat skills.
Also keep in mind in the beginning when Thor tackles Kratos through the air he punches Thor a few times and bared moves his head. He does the same near the end and alters his flight path and nearly punches Thor off him completely. He holds back a lot and doesnt really know how much force he's allowed to use to keep from taking a life as we know he doesnt want to do anymore. So him holding back is more of a self control thing.
3 is actually my favorite of the original trilogy I get that's not the popular opinion but man that game was such a satisfying payoff some I feel Ragnarok was missing just a bit. I replayed it for the first time in years during the lead up to Ragnarok and the PS4 remaster holds up so well highly recommend it to anyone that liked the 2018 game or Ragnarok it's worth your time and a relatively short game too.
I see a lot of debate on strength levels, in terms of strength it is widely debatable and to be honest there's no end. What is indisputable is power levels, the Greek gods wield powers the Norse gods could only dream of. In a fight a Norse god might have the strenght but the powers a Greek god can call upon will tip the scale drastically. hence why the title who is more powerful not stronger. but great points by all sides tho. The only greek god who would clap the norse mythology is zeus is my opinion. Even poseidon or hades could have a hard time against thor. Baldur could kill hermes, helios and hercules alone. Baldur also put jormungandr to sleep and thor sent it back in time, they can fight titans like cronos and gaia. Also odin fought kratos, atreus and freya at once. The greek gods have way more powers but in fights the norse gods deserve some respect.
@@jinxed_nobody1133 Kratos was also fighting without the intent to kill, in the Odin fight he tells Freya he doesn’t want to rob her of justice and intervene. Before the Heimdall fight Kratos states “I’ve fought Gods stronger than him” meaning plural and Heimdall is at least the 3rd strongest Norse god, debatable that Baldur could be stronger than him but he’s the point still stands, most Greek gods we’re probably better than Heimdall. Thor could probably be beaten by Ares, Hades, Poseidon, Sisters of Fate, and the Furies in a straight up fight, Zeus in the Iliad is said to be stronger than all the other gods combined and only Kratos can kill him, because according to both in game prophecy and real life only a son of Zeus could kill him. As for Baldur’s invincibility there are other ways to handle this, Greek gods were pretty efficient at sealing away powerful entities. Odin even in Norse mythology isn’t the strongest, he was able to kill a beaten Thor and Odin got beaten by a guy who was holding back, a junior god, and Freya who doesn’t look all that powerful. We never do anything special to kill Odin, Zeus you had to have the sword of Olympus to even stand a chance.

Also Freya doesn't "look" powerful because in the gameplay she is just a companion, but in the cutscenes we know she is powerful, she could fight kratos when he thought she was a valkyrie, so he was probably not holding back, she messed Nidhogg up and she is a very powerful magic user, you can see that when she "cursed" Baldur, controlled Thamur's body and brought Mimir back to life. She has to be at the same level as Baldur when he was out of the curse. Kratos says Thor is the physically strongest god he has ever fought. Where thor could be beaten by Poseidon? Poseidon's strength is his water avatar and he is weak without it. Thor could just throw mjolnir and it would go right through the water and take Poseidon out of it. Poseidon outside of the water wouldn'd be able to do anything against Thor. I don't see Ares beating Thor. Ares fought a mortal Kratos with "Pandora's Box" powers, Mentally atacked him and took his magic and chains out and still lost. Thor erradicated the giants from midgard so he can easily kill titans. Thor hit Jormungandr so hard it shook Yggdrasil and sent the serpent back in time. Also Thor literally killed kratos and brought him back, sure kratos was "holding back" in the fight but in that scene at that point it was life or death for him and it doesn't matter how much he was holding back in the fight, Kratos would never just let Thor kill him. If we agree that Kratos wasn't planning on dying then we can agree that he was trying his best to survive the fight. Yet Thor was able to overcome him but brought him back because he wasn't allowed to kill him, in the first fight Thor was also holding back. The leviathan axe was also poisoned with Eitr, what could have helped a lot in the fights, since we see that his injury doesn't heal. Odin has to be at Thor's level or more powerful than him. He killed ymir and created the world. He was fighting three gods at once, while Thor was fighting only Kratos.
@@sercravenmohead3631 The thing is, we don't really see how powerful these characters are in the gameplay, the gameplay of gow 3 was very good at portraying the gods' level of power. But Zeus is definitely more powerful than the norse pantheon no doubt. My point is: the greek gods, except for Zeus and such, are on the same level as some norse gods. The thing is, there are more greek gods than norse gods so we don't get a fair fight. The only norse gods who can go against Ares, Hades or Poseidon are Thor and Odin. Then Baldur can probably clap Hercules, hermes and helios and put up a good fight against poseidon. Heimdall can probably clap Hercules, hermes and helios aswell. Magni and Modi together are at the same level or a little less powerful than hercules.
Dude youre not alone, many consider GoW 2 their favourite, and while i prefer the GoW 3 gameplay and spectacle, GoW 2 has the best adventure aspect to it, the best soundtrack and the most intriguing and intense plot thats a true greek epos. I mean that Collosus fight and the Fates is just iconic, just as the atmosphere and scenery at the Island of Creation or talking to Atlas and Gaia when he saved us. GoW 2 was the perfect sequel.
I would love for Kratos to take a visit to China. the Gods and figures of chinese mythology would definitely be a return to form in terms of power, Ne Zha, Erlang Shen, The Dragon Kings, The Monkey King, etc. Egypt would be really cool to, they teased egypt a lot in the last two games, I'd assume we're headed there next if they keep going.

There's actually a hint in the game that the series will see Kratos and Atraeus going to ancient Egypt. There's an artifact you can find that is a clear symbol of old African history. And at the end of the artifact's description there is one line: "Perhaps when this is all over we will visit there."
Most likely the Egyptian gods will play a role in the next game. I am uncertain if they will decide to have Atreus as the frontrunner, or if Kratos will still be the lead. One way or another, Kratos has lost alot of his power after his home fell to peril. His weapons and magic that he obtained lost. If he goes to Egypt, he will likely have to once again regain his power through things taken from the Egyptian gods. Lets remember afterall, The Egyptian gods range in power level. From guidances to the underworld to the literal sun. So there is a potential there. And also of course, the fact of there being a god of war there. Tyre having a connection to them as well means it is possible that Tyre could bring Kratos there for whatever reason too.
God of War 2 is the best one to me too. The adventure flows best in that one to me and debatably more epic than 3 since Kratos went to crazier places like under the earth with Atlas. 3 is insane but the Zeus fights dragged on despite being great. I also libe how the Golden Fleece worked in that game.
It tracks! Greek pantheon *should* be stronger in a depiction. Greek gods had an important prescence in Greek society. Both as warnings/lessons and as propaganda devices for uniting the greek cities. They were so over-the-top because greeks needed to fear their Gods lest the hierarchy would fall apart. Meanwhile, the old norse culture was way more humble and down to earth, and humanistic. Norse mythology reflect this, with their gods being human archetypes rather than cosmic manifestations, flawed & disabled, mortal, basically underdogs against elves & Jotuns. TL;DR Norse gods = relatable humans that could very well come knocking on your door any day, whilst Greek Gods were statuesque entities of reverence.
@@tadrosse3786 yeah I love the sociological aspects of mythology. There’s also some interesting differences between Greek & Roman. They’re the same gods, but very different in the public view. Greeks wrote a bunch of plays and stories about their gods, dedicated great temples and statues to them. Meanwhile Romans thought that shit was "gay" and feminine. That’s why there’s way less stories today about Jupiter & Neptune, and the only well known roman figure is Hercules (bcuz macho). Romans were really into the whole "shaping history" thing, so that’s why they made sure their culture was represented in the calendar and solar system.
Sad to say, But in this story, none of that is the case. Even 2018 novelization had baldur be one of kratos's more tougher fights as he had no idea what to do against the invulnerability.

He isnt asked, thats why he doesnt share. He did briefly mention Gaia in the game. He told Atreus off-screen about the muses, i guess if Mimir asked he would also tell him about the Titans.
The Titans are gods like the Olympians. They embody concepts like Earth, Fire, Time, and Sky. They were immortal just like the Olympians. The Giants were just that....Giants.
I think it's kinda hinted at the that the Mayan pantheon is as strong if not stronger than the Greek pantheon. From what was written about the Mayan treasure. He says they're very nice and benevolent but wouldn't want to mess with them especially with their god of death. That would be a great pantheon to visit tbh.

Odin beat an under powered version of kratos you can just go back and look at the other games. And the spear was required because of heimdalls mind reading. From what i can tell they hinted at in game is power is influenced by the number of worshippers so of course the greek gods would be strong much larger population.
kratos could have killed heimdall without the spear, but he didnt want to go back to his old ways wich is why he wanted the spear, thats why after the first hit, kratos doesnt need the spear to hit him

I agree. The Greek pantheon were on a whole other level. I believe in the last game, Baldur made some snarky comment to Kratos about the Greek pantheon thinking they were better than them, being more enlightened. If you were to leave it to Zeus, Hades and Poseidon (who is stronger than Zeus) alone, they would wipe out the Norse pantheon without question. The fact that Kratos confirmed the rumors of his feats show how powerful they were. Remember, Athena had to the power to make Kratos into a complete God, and that says something.
Giant is also not from Midgard, also Baldur never even know who Kratos is. That why everyone so surprise Kratos can kill a Gods, because everyone except Freya who know his true nature though he a Giant.

I want to point something out here. Yeah, the Greek Pantheon had more flashy magic, but there’s something everyone has been missing. The Greek Gods were solely on Mt Olympus, under the earth in Hades, or literally where ever there patronages were. The Norse pantheon however…has travel between realms and worlds. Odin rules over nine fucking worlds. You don’t get there without having power. Yeah they don’t have the special powers but there is something to be said about that. Kratos does say that he has killed greater gods than Heimdall, but he’s not the Allfather is he? I liken Heimdall to Hermes, interesting and essential to the lore but not all that powerful. I would venture to say, as most of the Norse gods have some war patronage, they are more like Kratos than the other Greek gods. Who, I might add, Kratos used a lot of their magic after killing them to defeat the other gods. My final point, there WERE titans in Norse myth. The literal first being in Norse myth was a massive Jötunn who Odin and his brothers killed and CREATED THE WORLD with his corpse. Just because it isn’t flashy doesn’t mean that it is not power.
yea..exactly...these norse sagas look more grounded and are less flashy, but thor and odin would beat any olympian outside of zeus (and maybe hades)..freya was shocked to hear about the fates..but she can enchant someone to make them not only immortal, but completely invulnerable...thats some freaking strong magic right there, which i dont know anyone from greek pantheon who can do that..the world serpent and specifically ygdrassil is on a larger scale than anything in the og trilogy...the og gods and beings were way more flashy, but the world and scale is so much bigger now...its just that theyre chosing to tell the story in a more grounded and humanised, character driven way
The size of the Greek world is quite comparable tho. It's just that the Greeks had no world Tree. Their entire "realms" are just one gargantuan landmass divided into earth and the underworld.
Yeah no, some of the olympian gods solo the norse myths. In the Norse myth, the Aesir are basically a race of powerful people from another realm and has magical powers, they're not actual gods. Whereas in greek myths olympian gods are actual personification of forces of nature or some other kind of concept. Yeah, the gods in the norse realm has "rule" over the nine realms but not really. They just rule over their own realms which is Asgard. The other realms are ruled by their own inhabitants. The asgard just tries to mess with them by invading them and killing their inhabitants and considering that none of the other world has their own "gods" no wonder they were able to take control of it. Heck, even someone as weak as freya is called the Leader of the valkyries and vanaheim. And also Odin the "all father" literally got killed by a 16 year old giant whereas it took a divine superweapon (blade of olympus) to kill Zeus. And even then he literally came back from the dead and Kratos had to use the power of hope from the pandora's box to completely defeat him. Your assumption that the Nordic gods were just powerful people is way off base. It comes from the idea that Snorri Sturluson wrote his Edda based on “this is what the pagans thought, but this is how it is”. He traded a myth is that has Odin and the Nordic pantheon creating the world and the realms, as well as there inhabitants, with a human sorcerer who came from Troy. As for the Greek gods being personifications, they are not. You are confusing them with Titans which the Nordic myth has its own equivalent on the Jötunn. It is the classic order out of chaos myth. And by that measure we take the gods by their patronages for their powers. Zeus god of the sky and king of Olympus. Odin god of war, madness, wisdom, death, and poetry. So who controls more? As far as the games go and how the Aesir “don’t rule” as you say. Did Rome not rule all that it conquered? Did Alexander not? What about Genghis Khan? By your definition these did not rule their kingdoms either.
GoW plays pretty accurate to the lore of these characters in mythology just taking narrative liberties when needed. And in mythology the Aesir are definitively mortals. They require the idunn apples for extended life and to maintain youth. They really aren’t “gods” in anything other than title only and especially not in Greek or modern day interpretations of the word. The Olympians on the other hand are actual divine beings. They are fully immortal and in mythology the domains they rule over are either conceptual or universal in size(Zeus, hades). I would dare say humans in Greek mythology like Achilles would pose a threat to the aesir.
I mean, the Norse gods are still pretty strong. Thor for instance threw a giants toe, Aurvandil, into the cosmos and it became a star, and managed to withstand (though lose against) the personification of age itself, but still held her back on one knee, which even impressed the giants. And one of Fenrir's kids ate the sun. They have a decent cosmic level of power, but the Greek Gods are pretty much infinite.
Kratos basically told them he held every power. Even primordial power(which he didn't mention). Kratos is literally immortal because his curse predates any magic.
2018 and ragnarok are amazing games and i went to extreme lengths to get the 2018 platinum trophy (still working on ragnaroks plat) but for me personally i can’t even express how much time i spent playing the first installment and god of war 2. i was only a kid playing them and i was in love with those games so when gow 3 came out that instantly became my favorite after beating it a couple times. it’s almost hard to compare the first 3 games and the new ones because they’re all gems in their own right and they bring a different feel. by far my favorite video game franchise hands down and i’ll recommend it to anyone who wants an amazing story and a challenge.
Don't forget Zeus shot a lightning bolt at African people trying fly to Athens. He missed but the power was so strong the grazing of it made them black. This is not a joke because most of Greek and Norse is headatory so in this story Zeus is why African are black...
Norse Gods being weaker makes sense really. Dozens or stories about them being tricked, or beaten. Thor once fought the physical manifestation of Time as an old woman, and lost in one blow. They got sick, they were injured by "lesser beings." The Greek Gods were massive, galaxy spanning immortals, that played with power and Earth as if by right. Despite that, a battle to death between Thor and Kratos would be a Ragnarok all of its own.
In Ragnarok kratos fought as a father and as a warrior and norse gods couldn't even beat him at this stage of his life, imagine just imagine the Chaos and destruction kratos would bring if he fought as the god of war, ghost of Sparta or the god killer 🔥🔥🔥
hmm, well in his younger days he was a lot more destructive, but Kratos has been confirmed to be stronger in his current state then what he was in his past. So depends on what aspects you mean. For anyone that played the new God of war Ragnarock, you’ll notice in the cutscenes when Kratos fought Heimdall at no point does he use Spartan Rage like he does for other fights, yall comparing the Greeks and the Norse gods like you didn’t see him only actually try once again Thanatos the actual embodiment of death

Baldur himself called Kratos “old and tired” In the first game, implying that even he could see that Kratos was in rusty shape. Also Thor was constantly prodding Kratos about wanting to see the “real” god of war that slayed a pantheon, being quite unimpressed with how Kratos was preforming into their first bount, again, implying that Kratos isn’t able to hit up to that benchmark he set for himself when he was younger. It seems you are trying to imply that the entire reason current Kratos is stronger is because, age = stronger when it comes to godhood, which would be a fair stance to make, but like Lazarx said. Kratos has literally lost all his native powers, and no longer fights for a living, seemingly only training occasionally to keep up his figure. Both of which being very valid ways to justify him being weaker than before, despite his age. I mean, maybeeee you can agrue that current Kratos is physically stronger than his younger self(still hard to prove though since his younger self has better lifting feats), but younger Kratos overall is the more powerful overall due to his mass array of abilities and constant state of bloodlust.
I was hoping they would touch a little more on Kratos past and allowing more callbacks to the Greek mythos. Would've been nice to have a dream sequence in which the player gets to play a past memory of when Kratos was in Greece with his wife and daughter and maybe wake up and tell Atreus about his half Greek sister who died.
Greek God's take it hands down. There are things that I missed in the 2018 GOW as well as Ragnarok but weren't in there as the previous game's. (Combo count, I was a big MK player growing up 😏) Although, I think the storyline became bigger as well as the combat and all that it encompasses.
I think Santa monica did a great job portraying Zeus and his pantheon. they are Ruthless, they have human worshippers in total servitude, to be worthy of being a champion of the gods, they send you to death challenges any human would fail, traps, monsters , magic artifacts you name it, the most powerful have their own realms. And when they have problems with each others they send humans, because zeus prevented them to fight openly. Zeus made it so that nobody could even imagine life without him in control.
Well, rather to compare which Pantheon is stronger in terms of strength, I'd like to theorize that it's because its different land, different story to tell, different tone, different interaction and conflict between characters, hence the difference power dynamic, and the Fates of each pantheon is somehow responsible for the power display within each saga. In Greek Saga, Zeus ruled the pantheon with an iron fist. The protagonist Kratos is single-mindedly driven by vengeance. the Fates of Greek Saga sided with Zeus, and the whole story itself become a tale of hardened hearts that leave no space for love, where problems are only solved through brutal and raw conflict. That's why the only thing that appears in the Greek Saga are flash and lightning, more and more crude power display. In Norse saga however, Odin is not alone. There's the Vanir which is considered equal to the Aesir, at least before Odin and Freya married, as well as the Giants which were thought responsible for bringing the Ragnarok, and many more races. There are a lot of parties involved, and to win one must not rely on brutal strength, but wit to properly make allies. The Fates might seem to mock those who dare to approach them, but they don't really take side. That's why in Norse Saga, punishment is not served as immediately and brutally as in Greek Saga, but they slowly unraveled until you could not escape. That's why the story tells more about the characters' personality flaw, as well as stories of well-planned trickery rather than bloody battles every time
The main reason why the Greek gods are more powerful than the Norse Gods is because the Norse Gods were essentially just superpowered immortal humans. The Greek Gods were literal physical embodiments of what they represent. Thats also the reason why their deaths are so violent compared to the other gods.
The Norse gods and Greek gods are very similar in power levels in traditional mythology they both used magic and tools. The great weapons for the Norse gods were made by dwarves and the great weapons for the Greek gods were made by Cyclopes

Yeah its definitely nite & day that battle with Thor & Odin even Baldur in first game was far so underwhelming compared to the Olympian gods specifically the big three Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. The Olympian big three had much greater large epic scale boss battle compare to the norse Aesir gods. My favorite is GOW 3!
The fights were underwhelming but it doesn't mean the norse gods are weak. Baldur put jormungandr to sleep, Thor sent jormungandr back in time, almost erradicated the giants, can fly, throw mjolnir and produce lightning and kratos says he is the physically strongest god he has ever fought, Odin killed ymir, created the world and fought kratos, atreus and freya all at once. Thor can go against ares, hades or poseidon. Heimdall or magni and modi are able to overcome the weaker gods like hermes and helios. They deserve some respect. The only greek god who can actually wash the norse gods is zeus. But the norse gods deserve some respect.

I mean Although they seem to lack mystical powers, except of course Odin, Freya, and the Vanir, their strength seems to be greater than the Greek Gods, as Baldur and Magni gave Kratos a noticeably greater challenge than most of the Greek Gods. Kratos has also deminished in power. One of the themes in the later GoW's is that Kratos has grown old en tired of violence. He's not as formidabel as a warrior as he once was and tries to contain his anger. Thor and Baldur call him out for it thats he's holding back or not living up to the legend
I still do not understand why people underestimate Kratos so much. • Cory Barlog literally stated you have to think of the Gods and creatures in the franchise existing on a different living plane, not as same as humans. Helios's light is as fast as the speed of light. Hermes is faster than sound. Zeus, Poseidon, Ares, Hades, Odin, Thor, Cronos are a LOT LOT LOTTT STRONGER THAN AS WE ARE SHOWN (literal Gods ya'll). The Devs can most definitely make the game where if you were to punch an enemy he could go flying across lands and basically one shot em, but would you really want to play a game where you move super fast and one shot everything? No right! • Kratos is the personification of strength, so i think it's quite iconic that he uses as much strength as required. He doesn't use the same strength when he's opening a chest as he is using to stop Cronos's hand from smashing him or when atlas tried to crush him between his fingers or when flipping Tyr's Temple.
Everything in the original god of war was in an epic scale, you could feel that Kratos was awesome for facing them. Nothing will compare to seeing Ares the first Time, i thought THAT is what a God looks like, then they showed the Titans and the other gods in the war and to this day nothing in the norse pantheon has even come close.
The gods of the Norse Pantheon are not as tied to the land as the Greek Pantheon in the games, which makes the Greek gods more powerful by the laws of magic for the franchise
The difference in power is made more clear by the deaths of the gods in each realm. The Greek gods each released a disaster onto the world, which I assume is caused by holding total dominance over some aspect of the world and harnessing it completely. Once they die of course, that control is released and balance is broken, causing great turmoil. The Norse gods don't have such an intense hold on the powers of the heavens and earth and as such their deaths have minimal consequence for the environment. Their magic can cause great change sure, but they don't seem to have a constant moment to moment stranglehold over the forces of nature like the Greek gods did. That's why they feel less dangerous from the players perspective.
I have a good comparison between the Norse and green pantheons in these games. Imagine the Norse gods as level 20 dnd characters: they are immensely powerful, but not inpenetrable. Now, imagine the greek gods as what most people imagine when they think of a god. Add that to the fact that kratos in the Norse games is constantly suppressing his violence and rage (which manifests as the spartan rage) and I think you can imagine what this means.
I low key want to see him go after Irish or even christianity as a Christian myself I believe kraitos need that forgiveness from what all the gods have done to him ik it might be boring but very interesting

Only the Roman Pantheon can possibly rival the Greek since they're counterparts of each other, for example Zeus's Roman counterpart is Jupiter and Poseidon is Neptune and so on
I’m very limited on pantheon and mythology. Feels like the Greek pantheon was this other worldly god level insanity yet Norse was more grounded along with suiting 2018/Ragnarok being a more grounded game story and characters

That's exactly the same with Mexican gods, they can divide themselves in many ways in many times, they are more like the culmination of many concepts, aspects of nature and human psychology, so they can exist in multiple times, places and aspects all in the same time, the most powerful like the four Tezcatlipocas can't even die even when they tried to, them four along side their parent Ometeotl (the first one, who can divide itself in a male and female deities and is mysterious even to the other gods) are the representation of everything. As a hindu I would really like to see hindu mythology in gow but I think it would be impossible to create the gods of hindu mythology for a game where you beat the gods cus god of hindu mythology are far far stronger than other pantheons but still would like to see it

I agree, it is obvious Norse gods are weaker than greek gods, but what made me sad, is that the pandemic thing affected the development of the gow Ragnarok,
it should be a trilogy, the prophecy of the first game should happen and Kratos dies in the arms of Loki as he did to Odin storing his father's souls part, but he would travel back in time with Jormungandr and become Loki as we all know, and closing a few gaps like, become a bee and sting Brok in the eye when he was creating Mjolnir, thus the short handle, cutting Friggs hair, swapping arrows to mistletoe when friends were playing on shooting Baldur when he became immortal and did not know the bad side of Freya spell yet, becoming a giant wolf and dragging Kratos to Midgard, (Faye cannot shapeshift this power Atreus inherit from Zeus), and last but not least, blowing the horn on the first game when he knew he was sick, Odin would know everything and prevent Ragnarok, on the Third game, Kratos would be Ragnarok himself.

Think about it. Spartan Rage is actually his normal power. He just suppresses it so he can be a good person. Every time you activate spartan rage you become a boss obliterator and they just can’t handle you till rage runs out. Kratos was constantly in a state of spartan rage in the first 3 games and he still had a hard time. The Greek pantheon was probably the strongest god realm
in norse kratos lost any extra ability and weapon he gained in the first 3 games,

Poseidon is not the sea itself, the sea is Pontus, a primordial. Poseidon death causes the sea to go crazy because Poseidon was needed to tame the sea, but he is not the sea. Also Hermes is not "traveling", he protects travellers. Without Hermes you can still travel normally, but you will probably die by dangerous things without his protection. But in both mythology and god of war is clear that the gods protects their domains, but are not their domains itself.

If I remember correctly the original idea for the 4th game was supposed to show both the Norse and Egyptian pantheons coming to Greece and take over after the power vacuum left behind from the Greeks dying. I’m not saying they could have easily beaten the other 2 but it proves the Greek gods had some higher level of power above the Norse and Egyptians that prevented either of them from invading.
I would love this plot idea to be used in the next game. Like Krathos is trying to sort the mess in the 9 realms while gods from other pantheons invade it to take Odin's place, meanwhile Atreas is on his quest to find surviving giants.
Because I loved supporting cast of those 2 games, and it would be great to see them once more
I would write the Roman in and let them rebuild the Greek Pantheon and have them show up taking over Egypt with Kratos in the middle of it

Pretty sure that's suppose to be the og plot of GOW3. Instead of building up to Zeus' defeat you beat him and the other Greeks earlier, only for the other pantheons to descend on Greece, their own versions of Kratos in tow.

Fun fact: Ares would terrorize Egypt in attempts to antagonize Zeus. God of War 1 official novelization covers that happening with Zeus furious about Ares causing strife. Plus the Egyptian are very much aware of Kratos as confirmed by the prequel comic to God of War 2018. So it’s likely they we’re happy his time in Egypt was brief
Ares was in the greek egypt, while Kratos was in the lands of the egyptian pantheons. The Sisters of Fate also controlled the entire Nile and considered to run it dry and wipe out the civilisation there.
I dont think Ra, Osiris and Horus would just tolerate that or Ares either.

Technically they are the same , they just weren’t translated as well in the ragnarok game with their powers , they tried to give them too many human characteristics in the newer games therefore losing their godly appeal , im sure Santa Monica chose this on purpose to drive their story with more human emotion . technically the olympians are compared to the Aesir gods and the titans are comparable to the giants , if you go throughout all mythology they are so similar in many aspects , sometimes seen very closely to one another ! But as far as the newer games I did kinda want a sense of more power from the gods in ragnarok , but it’s ok they still did a overall great job and made a great game!
Norse gods are not the same. Without special magic the Greeks would wipe them out. Greeks get naturally stronger as they age. Norse gods will lose Immortality if they don't eat apple's
The mythologies came from the same place ultimately. Greco/Roman and Norse/Germanic Mythology (as well as Celtic and Vedic Hindu/Rigveda texts, Balto-Slavic myth, etc) are all of Indo European origin, likely from the steppes of Ukraine/Russia/Moldova
And to further this connection as well…the Valkyries were originally presented much like the Greek Furies. The presentation of them changes by the time of the Viking age however and they seen as a thing to revere rather than be weary of, contrary to the older Germanic variant.

It's been really interesting to see all the points being made for each side, very good stuff. Based on what was potrayed in gow ragnarok, the olympians/greek mythology possess magic that even captivates mimir (the smartest being in their world) and freya (the most capable magic wielding being in their world) to them it's beyond belief and too OP. So in the end and once again based on what was on displayed in the game, the norse gods can match the greeks in raw strength but when it comes to magicall ability, they would overwhelm any norse god displayed in the game with said magical abilities. Once again based on the games so far. i have no doubt in the actual mythologies they would be very evenly matched.
I see many people confusing you talking about powers with strength. Two words easily confused. The Greeks indeed had more power and they displayed it well. Kratos used so many variations of lightening, fire, wind, electric and the power of hope to kill zues and even that it took many tries. Odin doesn't stand a chance Vs that kratos. This kratos is completely nerfd no magic just combat skills.

Also keep in mind in the beginning when Thor tackles Kratos through the air he punches Thor a few times and bared moves his head. He does the same near the end and alters his flight path and nearly punches Thor off him completely. He holds back a lot and doesnt really know how much force he's allowed to use to keep from taking a life as we know he doesnt want to do anymore.
So him holding back is more of a self control thing.
In the mythologies I would rank the Greek gods as being far greater than the Norse gods

3 is actually my favorite of the original trilogy I get that's not the popular opinion but man that game was such a satisfying payoff some I feel Ragnarok was missing just a bit. I replayed it for the first time in years during the lead up to Ragnarok and the PS4 remaster holds up so well highly recommend it to anyone that liked the 2018 game or Ragnarok it's worth your time and a relatively short game too.
I see a lot of debate on strength levels, in terms of strength it is widely debatable and to be honest there's no end. What is indisputable is power levels, the Greek gods wield powers the Norse gods could only dream of. In a fight a Norse god might have the strenght but the powers a Greek god can call upon will tip the scale drastically. hence why the title who is more powerful not stronger. but great points by all sides tho. The only greek god who would clap the norse mythology is zeus is my opinion. Even poseidon or hades could have a hard time against thor. Baldur could kill hermes, helios and hercules alone. Baldur also put jormungandr to sleep and thor sent it back in time, they can fight titans like cronos and gaia. Also odin fought kratos, atreus and freya at once. The greek gods have way more powers but in fights the norse gods deserve some respect.

Before the Heimdall fight Kratos states “I’ve fought Gods stronger than him” meaning plural and Heimdall is at least the 3rd strongest Norse god, debatable that Baldur could be stronger than him but he’s the point still stands, most Greek gods we’re probably better than Heimdall. Thor could probably be beaten by Ares, Hades, Poseidon, Sisters of Fate, and the Furies in a straight up fight, Zeus in the Iliad is said to be stronger than all the other gods combined and only Kratos can kill him, because according to both in game prophecy and real life only a son of Zeus could kill him. As for Baldur’s invincibility there are other ways to handle this, Greek gods were pretty efficient at sealing away powerful entities. Odin even in Norse mythology isn’t the strongest, he was able to kill a beaten Thor and Odin got beaten by a guy who was holding back, a junior god, and Freya who doesn’t look all that powerful. We never do anything special to kill Odin, Zeus you had to have the sword of Olympus to even stand a chance.

Also Freya doesn't "look" powerful because in the gameplay she is just a companion, but in the cutscenes we know she is powerful, she could fight kratos when he thought she was a valkyrie, so he was probably not holding back, she messed Nidhogg up and she is a very powerful magic user, you can see that when she "cursed" Baldur, controlled Thamur's body and brought Mimir back to life. She has to be at the same level as Baldur when he was out of the curse. Kratos says Thor is the physically strongest god he has ever fought. Where thor could be beaten by Poseidon? Poseidon's strength is his water avatar and he is weak without it. Thor could just throw mjolnir and it would go right through the water and take Poseidon out of it. Poseidon outside of the water wouldn'd be able to do anything against Thor. I don't see Ares beating Thor. Ares fought a mortal Kratos with "Pandora's Box" powers, Mentally atacked him and took his magic and chains out and still lost. Thor erradicated the giants from midgard so he can easily kill titans. Thor hit Jormungandr so hard it shook Yggdrasil and sent the serpent back in time. Also Thor literally killed kratos and brought him back, sure kratos was "holding back" in the fight but in that scene at that point it was life or death for him and it doesn't matter how much he was holding back in the fight, Kratos would never just let Thor kill him. If we agree that Kratos wasn't planning on dying then we can agree that he was trying his best to survive the fight. Yet Thor was able to overcome him but brought him back because he wasn't allowed to kill him, in the first fight Thor was also holding back. The leviathan axe was also poisoned with Eitr, what could have helped a lot in the fights, since we see that his injury doesn't heal. Odin has to be at Thor's level or more powerful than him. He killed ymir and created the world. He was fighting three gods at once, while Thor was fighting only Kratos.

But Zeus is definitely more powerful than the norse pantheon no doubt. My point is: the greek gods, except for Zeus and such, are on the same level as some norse gods. The thing is, there are more greek gods than norse gods so we don't get a fair fight. The only norse gods who can go against Ares, Hades or Poseidon are Thor and Odin. Then Baldur can probably clap Hercules, hermes and helios and put up a good fight against poseidon. Heimdall can probably clap Hercules, hermes and helios aswell. Magni and Modi together are at the same level or a little less powerful than hercules.

Dude youre not alone, many consider GoW 2 their favourite, and while i prefer the GoW 3 gameplay and spectacle, GoW 2 has the best adventure aspect to it, the best soundtrack and the most intriguing and intense plot thats a true greek epos.
I mean that Collosus fight and the Fates is just iconic, just as the atmosphere and scenery at the Island of Creation or talking to Atlas and Gaia when he saved us.
GoW 2 was the perfect sequel.

There's actually a hint in the game that the series will see Kratos and Atraeus going to ancient Egypt. There's an artifact you can find that is a clear symbol of old African history. And at the end of the artifact's description there is one line: "Perhaps when this is all over we will visit there."

Most likely the Egyptian gods will play a role in the next game. I am uncertain if they will decide to have Atreus as the frontrunner, or if Kratos will still be the lead. One way or another, Kratos has lost alot of his power after his home fell to peril. His weapons and magic that he obtained lost. If he goes to Egypt, he will likely have to once again regain his power through things taken from the Egyptian gods. Lets remember afterall, The Egyptian gods range in power level. From guidances to the underworld to the literal sun. So there is a potential there. And also of course, the fact of there being a god of war there. Tyre having a connection to them as well means it is possible that Tyre could bring Kratos there for whatever reason too.
God of War 2 is the best one to me too. The adventure flows best in that one to me and debatably more epic than 3 since Kratos went to crazier places like under the earth with Atlas. 3 is insane but the Zeus fights dragged on despite being great. I also libe how the Golden Fleece worked in that game.
It tracks! Greek pantheon *should* be stronger in a depiction. Greek gods had an important prescence in Greek society. Both as warnings/lessons and as propaganda devices for uniting the greek cities. They were so over-the-top because greeks needed to fear their Gods lest the hierarchy would fall apart.
Meanwhile, the old norse culture was way more humble and down to earth, and humanistic. Norse mythology reflect this, with their gods being human archetypes rather than cosmic manifestations, flawed & disabled, mortal, basically underdogs against elves & Jotuns.
TL;DR Norse gods = relatable humans that could very well come knocking on your door any day, whilst Greek Gods were statuesque entities of reverence.

@@tadrosse3786 yeah I love the sociological aspects of mythology. There’s also some interesting differences between Greek & Roman. They’re the same gods, but very different in the public view. Greeks wrote a bunch of plays and stories about their gods, dedicated great temples and statues to them. Meanwhile Romans thought that shit was "gay" and feminine. That’s why there’s way less stories today about Jupiter & Neptune, and the only well known roman figure is Hercules (bcuz macho). Romans were really into the whole "shaping history" thing, so that’s why they made sure their culture was represented in the calendar and solar system.

I think it's kinda hinted at the that the Mayan pantheon is as strong if not stronger than the Greek pantheon. From what was written about the Mayan treasure. Odin beat an under powered version of kratos you can just go back and look at the other games. And the spear was required because of heimdalls mind reading. From what i can tell they hinted at in game is power is influenced by the number of worshippers so of course the greek gods would be strong much larger population.
kratos could have killed heimdall without the spear, but he didnt want to go back to his old ways wich is why he wanted the spear, thats why after the first hit, kratos doesnt need the spear to hit him

I believe in the last game, Baldur made some snarky comment to Kratos about the Greek pantheon thinking they were better than them, being more enlightened. If you were to leave it to Zeus, Hades and Poseidon (who is stronger than Zeus) alone, they would wipe out the Norse pantheon without question. The fact that Kratos confirmed the rumors of his feats show how powerful they were. Remember, Athena had to the power to make Kratos into a complete God, and that says something.

I want to point something out here. Yeah, the Greek Pantheon had more flashy magic, but there’s something everyone has been missing. The Greek Gods were solely on Mt Olympus, under the earth in Hades, or literally where ever there patronages were. The Norse pantheon however…has travel between realms and worlds. Odin rules over nine fucking worlds. You don’t get there without having power. Yeah they don’t have the special powers but there is something to be said about that. Kratos does say that he has killed greater gods than Heimdall, but he’s not the Allfather is he? I liken Heimdall to Hermes, interesting and essential to the lore but not all that powerful. I would venture to say, as most of the Norse gods have some war patronage, they are more like Kratos than the other Greek gods. Who, I might add, Kratos used a lot of their magic after killing them to defeat the other gods. My final point, there WERE titans in Norse myth. The literal first being in Norse myth was a massive Jötunn who Odin and his brothers killed and CREATED THE WORLD with his corpse. Just because it isn’t flashy doesn’t mean that it is not power.
yea..exactly...these norse sagas look more grounded and are less flashy, but thor and odin would beat any olympian outside of zeus (and maybe hades)..freya was shocked to hear about the fates..but she can enchant someone to make them not only immortal, but completely invulnerable...thats some freaking strong magic right there, which i dont know anyone from greek pantheon who can do that..the world serpent and specifically ygdrassil is on a larger scale than anything in the og trilogy...the og gods and beings were way more flashy, but the world and scale is so much bigger now...its just that theyre chosing to tell the story in a more grounded and humanised, character driven way
The size of the Greek world is quite comparable tho. It's just that the Greeks had no world Tree. Their entire "realms" are just one gargantuan landmass divided into earth and the underworld.
Yeah no, some of the olympian gods solo the norse myths. In the Norse myth, the Aesir are basically a race of powerful people from another realm and has magical powers, they're not actual gods. Whereas in greek myths olympian gods are actual personification of forces of nature or some other kind of concept. Yeah, the gods in the norse realm has "rule" over the nine realms but not really. They just rule over their own realms which is Asgard. The other realms are ruled by their own inhabitants. The asgard just tries to mess with them by invading them and killing their inhabitants and considering that none of the other world has their own "gods" no wonder they were able to take control of it. Heck, even someone as weak as freya is called the Leader of the valkyries and vanaheim. And also Odin the "all father" literally got killed by a 16 year old giant whereas it took a divine superweapon (blade of olympus) to kill Zeus. And even then he literally came back from the dead and Kratos had to use the power of hope from the pandora's box to completely defeat him. Kratos himself stabbed himself with the blade of olympus and didn't die. That should tell you everything about how superior the greek gods were in terms of power and endurance. Yeah their sphere of influence may have been smaller but that doesn't mean they were weak.

Your assumption that the Nordic gods were just powerful people is way off base. It comes from the idea that Snorri Sturluson wrote his Edda based on “this is what the pagans thought, but this is how it is”. He traded a myth is that has Odin and the Nordic pantheon creating the world and the realms, as well as there inhabitants, with a human sorcerer who came from Troy. As for the Greek gods being personifications, they are not. You are confusing them with Titans which the Nordic myth has its own equivalent on the Jötunn. It is the classic order out of chaos myth. And by that measure we take the gods by their patronages for their powers. Zeus god of the sky and king of Olympus. Odin god of war, madness, wisdom, death, and poetry. So who controls more?
As far as the games go and how the Aesir “don’t rule” as you say. Did Rome not rule all that it conquered? Did Alexander not? What about Genghis Khan? By your definition these did not rule their kingdoms either.

GoW plays pretty accurate to the lore of these characters in mythology just taking narrative liberties when needed. And in mythology the Aesir are definitively mortals. They require the idunn apples for extended life and to maintain youth.
They really aren’t “gods” in anything other than title only and especially not in Greek or modern day interpretations of the word. The Olympians on the other hand are actual divine beings.
They are fully immortal and in mythology the domains they rule over are either conceptual or universal in size(Zeus, hades). I would dare say humans in Greek mythology like Achilles would pose a threat to the aesir.
I mean, the Norse gods are still pretty strong. Thor for instance threw a giants toe, Aurvandil, into the cosmos and it became a star, and managed to withstand (though lose against) the personification of age itself, but still held her back on one knee, which even impressed the giants. And one of Fenrir's kids ate the sun. They have a decent cosmic level of power, but the Greek Gods are pretty much infinite.
Kratos basically told them he held every power. Even primordial power(which he didn't mention). Kratos is literally immortal because his curse predates any magic.

2018 and ragnarok are amazing games and i went to extreme lengths to get the 2018 platinum trophy (still working on ragnaroks plat) but for me personally i can’t even express how much time i spent playing the first installment and god of war 2. i was only a kid playing them and i was in love with those games so when gow 3 came out that instantly became my favorite after beating it a couple times. it’s almost hard to compare the first 3 games and the new ones because they’re all gems in their own right and they bring a different feel. by far my favorite video game franchise hands down and i’ll recommend it to anyone who wants an amazing story and a challenge.
Don't forget Zeus shot a lightning bolt at African people trying fly to Athens. He missed but the power was so strong the grazing of it made them black. This is not a joke because most of Greek and Norse is headatory so in this story Zeus is why African are black...
Norse Gods being weaker makes sense really. Dozens or stories about them being tricked, or beaten. Thor once fought the physical manifestation of Time as an old woman, and lost in one blow. They got sick, they were injured by "lesser beings." The Greek Gods were massive, galaxy spanning immortals, that played with power and Earth as if by right. Despite that, a battle to death between Thor and Kratos would be a Ragnarok all of its own.

When an Olympian dies, a natural disaster erupts. This alone is enough to understand how powerful the Greek gods were.

hmm, well in his younger days he was a lot more destructive, but Kratos has been confirmed to be stronger in his current state then what he was in his past. So depends on what aspects you mean. Like They couldn't beat a stronger Kratos while he was holding back a lot and not as destructive as he was. To if they fought his younger self, although weaker, was a lot more destructive and combat fanatical.
For anyone that played the new God of war Ragnarock, you’ll notice in the cutscenes when Kratos fought Heimdall at no point does he use Spartan Rage like he does for other fights, yall comparing the Greeks and the Norse gods like you didn’t see him only actually try once again Thanatos the actual embodiment of death
So the argument is since kratos fights better and more skilled to the point he can solo gods in base means he along with the new gods are weaker gotcha 😂
@@therealbnasty3719 he's stopped fighting very seriously for years and also lost most/all of his powers and weapons from the previous games. I don't think he gained much "experience", if at all, from the previous game beside mastering his axe

Baldur himself called Kratos “old and tired” In the first game, implying that even he could see that Kratos was in rusty shape. Also Thor was constantly prodding Kratos about wanting to see the “real” god of war that slayed a pantheon, being quite unimpressed with how Kratos was preforming into their first bount, again, implying that Kratos isn’t able to hit up to that benchmark he set for himself when he was younger. It seems you are trying to imply that the entire reason current Kratos is stronger is because, age = stronger when it comes to godhood, which would be a fair stance to make, but like Lazarx said. Kratos has literally lost all his native powers, and no longer fights for a living, seemingly only training occasionally to keep up his figure. Both of which being very valid ways to justify him being weaker than before, despite his age. I mean, maybeeee you can agrue that current Kratos is physically stronger than his younger self(still hard to prove though since his younger self has better lifting feats), but younger Kratos overall is the more powerful overall due to his mass array of abilities and constant state of bloodlust.

I was hoping they would touch a little more on Kratos past and allowing more callbacks to the Greek mythos. Would've been nice to have a dream sequence in which the player gets to play a past memory of when Kratos was in Greece with his wife and daughter and maybe wake up and tell Atreus about his half Greek sister who died.
Love the appreciation for the OG games and seeing the clear differences in power. The games clearly show discrepancy and facts.
Greek God's take it hands down. There are things that I missed in the 2018 GOW as well as Ragnarok but weren't in there as the previous game's. (Combo count, I was a big MK player growing up 😏) Although, I think the storyline became bigger as well as the combat and all that it encompasses.
I think Santa monica did a great job portraying Zeus and his pantheon.
they are Ruthless, they have human worshippers in total servitude, to be worthy of being a champion of the gods, they send you to death challenges any human would fail, traps, monsters , magic artifacts you name it, the most powerful have their own realms. And when they have problems with each others they send humans, because zeus prevented them to fight openly. Zeus made it so that nobody could even imagine life without him in control.

The Greek God feels like an actual God. When they died, the nature was affected. The Norse God feels like they're just a bunch of superior human.
Thats because they were tied to the land, that's where their power comes from. It's actually a handicap.

Well, rather to compare which Pantheon is stronger in terms of strength, I'd like to theorize that it's because its different land, different story to tell, different tone, different interaction and conflict between characters, hence the difference power dynamic, and the Fates of each pantheon is somehow responsible for the power display within each saga.
In Greek Saga, Zeus ruled the pantheon with an iron fist. The protagonist Kratos is single-mindedly driven by vengeance. the Fates of Greek Saga sided with Zeus, and the whole story itself become a tale of hardened hearts that leave no space for love, where problems are only solved through brutal and raw conflict. That's why the only thing that appears in the Greek Saga are flash and lightning, more and more crude power display.
In Norse saga however, Odin is not alone. There's the Vanir which is considered equal to the Aesir, at least before Odin and Freya married, as well as the Giants which were thought responsible for bringing the Ragnarok, and many more races. There are a lot of parties involved, and to win one must not rely on brutal strength, but wit to properly make allies. The Fates might seem to mock those who dare to approach them, but they don't really take side. That's why in Norse Saga, punishment is not served as immediately and brutally as in Greek Saga, but they slowly unraveled until you could not escape. That's why the story tells more about the characters' personality flaw, as well as stories of well-planned trickery rather than bloody battles every time
The main reason why the Greek gods are more powerful than the Norse Gods is because the Norse Gods were essentially just superpowered immortal humans. The Greek Gods were literal physical embodiments of what they represent. Thats also the reason why their deaths are so violent compared to the other gods.

The Norse gods and Greek gods are very similar in power levels in traditional mythology they both used magic and tools. The great weapons for the Norse gods were made by dwarves and the great weapons for the Greek gods were made by Cyclopes

People are very quick to argue that the Norse gods are more powerful, but the Greek Gods in my opinion come off like actual deities. The Norse gods came off as humans with super powers.. The Olympians are on a different level.

Yeah its definitely nite & day that battle with Thor & Odin even Baldur in first game was far so underwhelming compared to the Olympian gods specifically the big three Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. The Olympian big three had much greater large epic scale boss battle compare to the norse Aesir gods. My favorite is GOW 3!
Context matters to the fights.
The fights were underwhelming but it doesn't mean the norse gods are weak. Baldur put jormungandr to sleep, Thor sent jormungandr back in time, almost erradicated the giants, can fly, throw mjolnir and produce lightning and kratos says he is the physically strongest god he has ever fought, Odin killed ymir, created the world and fought kratos, atreus and freya all at once. Thor can go against ares, hades or poseidon. Heimdall or magni and modi are able to overcome the weaker gods like hermes and helios. They deserve some respect. The only greek god who can actually wash the norse gods is zeus. But the norse gods deserve some respect.

Perhaps their powers were tied to the amount of worshipers they had access to? The Norse pantheon has small, viking settlements spread throughout Midgard. But Greece is covered in massive city states, metropolitan populations, some dedicated to a single God like Athens and Athena. /shrug, the only other pantheon I'm familiar with is Egypt, and I'm sure they could give Olympus a run for their money. Maybe... before Osiris is chopped into pieces and spread amongst the cosmos...

I mean Although they seem to lack mystical powers, except of course Odin, Freya, and the Vanir, their strength seems to be greater than the Greek Gods, as Baldur and Magni gave Kratos a noticeably greater challenge than most of the Greek Gods. And Thor straight up killed Kratos.It took Kratos with 3 legendary weapons,Atreus,and Freya to take down Odin,and even then they just could remove his soul so I'd say their even.
Kratos was way stronger than he is now while facing the greek gods due to the arsenal he obtained. This is already stated.
And Kratos needed 2 games to kill Zeus and he had the full power of hope, all godly weapons and was going all out, something norse Kratos never done so Kratos being able to mop the norse pantheon without going all out says alot about their strength

Kratos has also deminished in power. One of the themes in the later GoW's is that Kratos has grown old en tired of violence. He's not as formidabel as a warrior as he once was and tries to contain his anger. Thor and Baldur call him out for it thats he's holding back or not living up to the legend

• Cory Barlog literally stated you have to think of the Gods and creatures in the franchise existing on a different living plane, not as same as humans. Helios's light is as fast as the speed of light. Hermes is faster than sound. Zeus, Poseidon, Ares, Hades, Odin, Thor, Cronos are a LOT LOT LOTTT STRONGER THAN AS WE ARE SHOWN (literal Gods ya'll). The Devs can most definitely make the game where if you were to punch an enemy he could go flying across lands and basically one shot em, but would you really want to play a game where you move super fast and one shot everything? No right!
• Kratos is the personification of strength, so i think it's quite iconic that he uses as much strength as required. He doesn't use the same strength when he's opening a chest as he is using to stop Cronos's hand from smashing him or when atlas tried to crush him between his fingers or when flipping Tyr's Temple.
Everything in the original god of war was in an epic scale, you could feel that Kratos was awesome for facing them.
Nothing will compare to seeing Ares the first Time, i thought THAT is what a God looks like, then they showed the Titans and the other gods in the war and to this day nothing in the norse pantheon has even come close.
The gods of the Norse Pantheon are not as tied to the land as the Greek Pantheon in the games, which makes the Greek gods more powerful by the laws of magic for the franchise

The difference in power is made more clear by the deaths of the gods in each realm. The Greek gods each released a disaster onto the world, which I assume is caused by holding total dominance over some aspect of the world and harnessing it completely. Once they die of course, that control is released and balance is broken, causing great turmoil. The Norse gods don't have such an intense hold on the powers of the heavens and earth and as such their deaths have minimal consequence for the environment. Their magic can cause great change sure, but they don't seem to have a constant moment to moment stranglehold over the forces of nature like the Greek gods did. That's why they feel less dangerous from the players perspective.
I have a good comparison between the Norse and green pantheons in these games. Imagine the Norse gods as level 20 dnd characters: they are immensely powerful, but not inpenetrable. Now, imagine the greek gods as what most people imagine when they think of a god. Add that to the fact that kratos in the Norse games is constantly suppressing his violence and rage (which manifests as the spartan rage) and I think you can imagine what this means.
I low key want to see him go after Irish or even christianity as a Christian myself I believe kraitos need that forgiveness from what all the gods have done to him ik it might be boring but very interesting

I’m very limited on pantheon and mythology. Feels like the Greek pantheon was this other worldly god level insanity yet Norse was more grounded along with suiting 2018/Ragnarok being a more grounded game story and characters
I personally think African inspired gods could be hard for Kratos to win, since they are representations of nature itself and are atemporal beings (multiple versions of the gods exist at the same time but in diferent age aspects to differ the infinite complexity of nature)
And the african inspired mithology is so rich i would love to see Kratos interract with, and its a culture so few people study i would love to see more games and art inspired by it
by the way i am not from African but i love the culture and follow a Brasilian ideology that inspires people to study all cultures and find their own awnsers based on all the religions and cultures around the world

That's exactly the same with Mexican gods, they can divide themselves in many ways in many times, they are more like the culmination of many concepts, aspects of nature and human psychology, so they can exist in multiple times, places and aspects all in the same time, the most powerful like the four Tezcatlipocas can't even die even when they tried to, them four along side their parent Ometeotl (the first one, who can divide itself in a male and female deities and is mysterious even to the other gods) are the representation of everything. For example, the blue Tezcatlipoca, Huitzilopochtli killed as many gods as there are stars in the sky just after being born, the Spaniards were terrified when they discover that Black Tezcatlipoca (the older of them four) was described being just as powerful as the Judeo-Christian God, so they modified his image and transformed him into the Devil
And then there are chinese gods , most are mid, at best athena level, but sun wu kong and buddha are up there in the heavens and basically untouchable unless you’re above reality itself.

As a hindu I would really like to see hindu mythology in gow but I think it would be impossible to create the gods of hindu mythology for a game where you beat the gods cus god of hindu mythology are far far stronger than other pantheons but still would like to see it
The strengh diffrence woulnd be a problem because they could simply nerv the hindu gods in these games.
But the thing is norse and greek mythologys are outdated and scientifically refuted myths, while hinduism is a world religion.

The difference is just the two are dead while one is currently alive.
