Studying Spring Migration of Spotted Salamanders

  • Every year, thousands of Yellow Spotted and Mole Salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum and Ambystoma) migrate back to temporary vernal pools left behind after the first spring rains. A salamander will return to the pool where it was born as many as 20 times in its lifetime.
    On Signal Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee, researchers from the Tennessee Aquarium and Southeast Missouri State University trapped and tagged these migrating amphibians to better understand how they reproduce and make use of these ephemeral habitats.
