The sculptor for the Green Knight, Michael Perry, lost his arm while cleaning the inside of a historical reinactment cannon - it literally blew it off to the elbow. Legends say that the Green Knight was his first sculpt since the accident. But this is incorrect: Green Knight is released in White Dwarf issue 206 and Michael Perry talks about it a bit on pg 81 "Altogether it took about three and a half weeks to sculpt. It was the last thing I did before my accident, so obviously it's quite special because of that." Michael continued to sculpt despite his accident. He has since operated Perry Miniatures company with his brother. They're massive historical geeks, and make great minis. Check them out!
@@newtybotpoorly worded. He was clearing the barrel of a loaded cannon. It's one of the steps in loading and firing a cannon. That's what the big brush you'll see a guy holding near a cannon is for. Cannons are dangerous. There's injuries all the time in reenactments.
Considering that sculpting with two hands can be a challenge depending on the intended details, I can't even imagine what doing it one handed would be like. Dude is seriously a geek culture champion.
The excitement of the guy really seals the deal. I love hobby videos and I love your content as a whole... but seeing someone so giddy to finally having a childhood grail between their hands gives all of this a whole new level of... well... wholesomeness!
Hey Jay, i have an idea for your Space Marine Chapters series. How about a Lore accurate Blood Raven Captain, compleet with Dark Angels Sword, Ultramarines plumage Helmet, Space Wolves Fur coat, Imperial Fists Boltgun.....you know, decked out with all the stuff he has "found" over the years ^^
Seeing the reaction to the unboxing and hearing the story behind it almost makes me cry, it's very exciting to know that everyone went through similar moments and we felt that "click" with a particular miniature, figure or game.
Metal models were the best. Back in the 90s I was playing a game of 40k at my local store, and knocked my (fully metal) Chaos dreadnaught off the table. It broke into every single component part. Good times.
Jay, watching you troubleshoot things so effortlessly that we all run into in this hobby is some absolutely next level stuff. I love taking your tips and archiving them for future projects.
The diorama can be placed on the table, so if the green knight needs summoning, there is certain to be a forest nearby! (The Green Knight requires at least one forest terrain piece to summon him into games.)
That story at the end was so heartwarming. So cool to see and hear how much joy this hobby can bring people, I think that's why I keep coming back to your vids, just a good ol' time.
With the dirty down moss you wanna really get a stick in there to dislodge all the chunks and shake it up loads while you can hear the mixing ball actually mixing once its free of the solids in the bottom. It also helps to put it in your pocket for a while before using it to heat it up a bit as it applies better when warm but not hot
I really like it but I think that I would have gone in a direction of making the forest more lush. Personal taste and all that. Really impressed by the caparison of the horse
Ah, the Green Knight. I repainted him a few months ago, after 20-something years of having him in my Bretonnian army. I put some glow in the dark paint, and he now glows, giving this ethereal vibe. Bretonnians were my very 1st army, and even though I have seen the light of Gork and Mork in both Fantasy and 40k, they still hold a special place in my heart.
One of your best videos of all time: super informative on what to expect from old metal minis, how you create an amazing paint scheme that used contrast paints, and that diorama is just stunning. And then you drop the most wholesome ending ever. Kinda hoping this video does extra well so you get a few more commissions like this.
Dang. The last few years miniatures I remember from White Dwarf in my youth are all over UA-cam as collector's items. Kinda neat actually. This was a really nice sculpt, and I loved 'eavy Metal's paint job on it.
I'm relatively new to WH as I just really like the lore being ridiculous for no reason other than "hell yeah" But bro your channel is hilarious and informative. Imma go ahead and put you with my few WH subscriptions, that box sniff had me in stitches lmao so make yourself at home next to Baldermort and Majorkill. The Emperor Protects
an ultrasonic cleaner can go very easily though a ziplock bag. just put some solvent or detergent in a bag and fill the rest of the cleaner with water.
The joy on getting the model is so good. Well done Jay and awesome work from Cobalt Keep on the bases... I haven't got any yet but one day I will! Do they want an Australian distributor? haha
He was referring to the old price. Green Knight would be a $60 minimum these days lol. I miss the good old days when $100 could get a new player into the game. $20 on their codex, $25 for a box of 10 Marines, $25 for a rhino, $8 for a leader, $35 for a Dreadnought... Avatars of Khaine and Bloodthirsters were $25 models in blister packs.
@@kenupton4084 oh my god im 13 and blew off over 300 euros of my pocket money (muslim hollidays are an easy way to get a few hundred bucks) on my tgousand sons already and i dont have q thousand points yet. Now you need 400 euros to get a thousand points which is also the smallest battle size now for some reason.
As someone who has actually read the actual poem of Sir Garwain and the Green Knight, it's incredible to me how the concept of the Green Knight has been further mythologised past the original. In the poem he is literally just a jolly lord in Morgana's magical disguise there to teach Garwain lessons in chivalry. He is not actually a cool warrior lol.
Bro, no YT channel has had me back and forth like yours. To this day, I can’t tell if you like firstborn marines or hate them the way you talk about them vis a vis primaris😅 but this video was epic, and exactly what I’ve been looking to do with the GK I got during the recent MTO sale. Subbed!
I LOVE cobalt keep's product and customer service and highly recommend them (i realize this sounds like a shill but I really have had fantastic experiences with their store)
I have a story a bit like this guys, I got it when I was a kid in 94, I still have the model unpainted in the box, marauder miniatures orc war wyvern with shaman, box is a bit battered from me taking it out and wondering if Ill ever be good enough to paint it every week when I was a kid.

Please can we have a studio tour Jay?!
@@StealthVenturi I 2nd this
My favorite part of the video is honestly how excited the guy was to receive it! Well done Jay, you made someone's inner child VERY happy
Same. And I so relate to his story. Got much the same response from my mother 😅
you mean it wasn't the part where Jay fingered the diorama and they blurred it out cuz fingerbanging?
Please can we have a studio tour Jay?
Having asked for a bit I second this. I need ideas for my own space
I third this
I fourth this
I fifth this
I sixth this
The unboxing at the end was a great addition
Honestly it was the part I was hoping to see the most. It's always so nice seeing that kind of thing.

That childhood story about Green Knight miniature... and the reaction for the paintjob. Priceless. Well done, Sir.

Jay we need more of that awesome death guard of yours!!
I love that at the end we get the reaction of the model it made the video so perfect

You should be very proud Jay, you made someone very happy with your brilliant work. Well done.
Wow, you did such a great job on the Green Knight. Not just a guy!
You should paint a loyal death guard
As in before they were corrupted? Or the death watch
Love to see a legendary painter in the making!!!
I really fall in love with the Green Knight! So…. Cool!
Honestly brought a tear to my eye, you brought a childhood dream to life for him!
Bretonia was my first WHF army and Green Knight one of favorite model of all times. Thanks, Jay!
There are always hidden gems in the videos: love the perfect foam core corner joints! ❤
This is probably one of the best videos you’ve made so far! Amazing paint job, beautiful diorama, and a great gift to a friend.
Keep it up!
Beginning to end an absolute banger of a video. Dioramas are great and it's awesome how you made it removable.

That baking soda tip is amazing!
That was pretty epic man. You can make all the dioramas you want if you just give them all away to friends.
Cobalt Keep really does make the best bases

If only this was the OG box - now that throws me back in time!
Amazing diorama, and as french guy i can tell you your pronounciation of "Fleur de Lys" is perfect ;)
Man that's cool. Jay out here doing God's work helping a guy's childhood dream come true. Righteous.

That was pretty epic... nice job... inspirational.
I really like how you made it so that the model comes off so you can still use it in games.😅
I have so many metal models from ages ago and their asthetic is so cool
yeah, i guess mostly because each one was the specific vision of someone hand sculpting, so they feel like they've had more care put into them ig
The last model the great Michael Perry sculpted before his accident that cost him his hand. A truly beautiful model.

try building HO scale dioramas to use for a photo shoot using HO scale locomotives, that's what I build
If your metal models are warped.you can just heat them up in hot water and bend them back. If you do it when they're cold you risk snapping the metal
Well done
Jay spreading joy.
If you don’t mind metal models and a unique range I would love to see a video with the Brigador models you can get from their website
Love the retro models!
Loving it!
Love it. I’ll send you mine when I find one for a good price 😂
Will you be doing any videos on painting the sylvaneth? Maybe a kurnoth hunter in the theme for each season?
Amazing work
