The production is better than most over 500k channels
I just did this upgrade on my 2020 Roubaix Expert. Great upgrade in my opinion.
great video, thanks for this video. more power to your channel.
Excellent video bud!!!!!
Straight to the point for sure!!! :-) :-)
I have a roval traverse can i put the 36t star rachet
I “upgraded” my roval slx40’s to the 36 tooth after I convinced myself it was what a sprinter would do. I thought it was great but in races everybody commented they always knew exactly where I was... it is a bit loud. For kicks I just went back to the old 16’s. Probably a better upgrade for a mtn bike.
mike burton probably if you’d upgrade to a Mountainbike!
True That, had a blast with my Stache this week. But don’t get me started on upgrades for that. “New” bikes are apparently not allowed until I get rid of one I already have. Sheesh.
Do you have to have dt Swiss hubs for this to work ?
Is this upgrade work for all newer DT hubs?
Que modelo de masa es esa ?? Dt swiss....
Cool!
The 54T was worth the upgrade, do it....Not noisy at all, kinda sweet sounding.
Grease is OIL (Different viscosity's) + SOAP (+ Other ingredients), the soap is what 'STICKS' the grease to the surface.
Most soaps are hydrophilic (Absorbs water) causing the grease to get that grey foamy look.
Marine grease is oil + lithium complex with anti rust and corrosion additives that REPELS WATER.
Boat trailers that load regularly that don't use marine grease in the wheel bearings....I don't want to be the person driving behind them down the highway.
Anything on the transom, bottom gears or internals on a boat, this is the stuff to use...WATER is repelled by this product (Marine Grease) and is great on anything exposed to water.
Works @#!%&! great on a bike and isn't over priced, repacked product (Phil Woods).
I have the 54T upgrade and use Marine Grease on the ratchet....Pretty blue color as well.
Hi Michael, Thanks for the tip! Will acquire the marine grease you mentioned.
DT makes specific freehub grease. Or use phils tenacious oil.
Thanks for the tip. Will any marine grease do, I have lucas marine grease.
Can I do this to dt Swiss 180 carbon shell hubs?
is this dt 240?
Hey what kind of dot Swiss are u using?is that r20 dicut?
will this upgrade kit work on roval fattie aluminum wheels. think they use dt Swiss internals
Yeah
Just bought the same m1700 wheel, if I wipe out some extra grease, will my hub sound more like this, it’s pretty quiet,.
M DRUMMOND yes i had same problem with mine, clean all parts and put really light layer of grease, or you can use some thick oil
Hi, I like to thank you for producing this great video that's educational and easy to understand how ratchets work. I like to ask you a question. Appreciate very much if you are able to clear my doubts. I have recently bought a Giant Defy Advanced Pro 2. I understand from my local Giant distributor that the hub used on its SLR carbon wheel disc is having 18t ratchet. However, they do not want to reveal if the hub is a DT Swiss hub. Any idea on this? If it is a DT Swiss, I like to purchase my own ratchet upgrade kit from 18t to 54t. Thank you in advance.
For the money buy the ZTTO knockoffs for 35.00 US on Ebay, try those simple as that :) if they don't fit, send it back, If they fit, keep them and buy the DT Swiss down the road when you want to upgrade again. I have the ZTTO 36t they work great.
@
amstudio, can use any grease?
What about the drag comparison?
what hub is that please? cuz i have the same hub and i dont know which one is?
Can this be done on any bike ?
excellent video bro
Thanks Jose
I tuned my one to verry loud one =P It is the only video on my channel =)
You pissed off a few bees. BEEEE careful :) Great vid.
i changed a 54t one .
Great video!
Music credit?
Perhaps a silly qn. But does the free hub sound increase when u go from 18 to 36 t. Or is the sound the same?
what do you mean "sound increase"? Frequency increases, volume not.
Going with 54t on a road bike will it make the bike slower or faster ?
On a road bike engagement doesn’t make much difference and it will just increase drag, more engagement is more beneficial in mountain biking
Why is this your last bike video, and why did you stop making them?
Music is awesome
I have DT Swiss X1700 hubs, can I do this upgrade?
I believe those come with DT Swiss 350 hubs, so yes.
Very nice video! I'm considering upgrading my wheels to dt swiss 350's. What rims do you all recommend and why?
Yeah the 350s are great hubs. For rims depends on a number of factors, type of riding, strength/weight, and budget . There are plenty of options. Alot of people I ride with use Stans and Enve rims.
Thanks!
loud and affordable freehub is hope, lol
What happends if i degrease all parts and not lube at all? i know it can ruin the ratchets , but how long does it take for it to happend? is it safe to ride enduro and jumps with degreaset ratchets? I put less lube than you, and i still have very low sound... Shoud i grease only 18t ratchet from the inside and degrease everything else? Axle, springs, spacer etc? Thank you...
I'm using 36t ratchet without any greese for a long time and i dont have any problem. Sounds very lound especialy with the springs more loaded .chears
marius Aneci So, if i understand you correctly, i can twist springs a little bit so i can add more tension to it? (Springs that press ratchets into place)The hub will probably be louder then?
You really have to ask this question? With high end hubs? Be safe out there!!
@@mariusaneci2634 how do you load your springs
I find the 36t is lacking engagement for climbing tech trails. Bought the 54t kit and I'm hoping for better results. Should really come standard on these pricey carbon hops! But as we know.. easy money for DT.😂
how did your cassette pull off so easily? did you use a cassette lockring removal tool and chain whip prior?
It's because he took the whole driver out, not the cassette
Its look like the free hub not using threaded end cap.. the end cap is just an easy slot in system.. thats why the free hub can pull off together with cassette and no need to dissassemble cassette at 1st.. still the cassette can be dissassemble 1st if u want..
Great for Mt bikes, but how does a DT Swiss hub perform on a road bike freewheeling down a steep hill? I can tell you that compared to a wheel, such as a Zipp wheel with a 188 hub on a spin test, the Zipp will spin at least 10x longer, and you don't need ear plugs. DM
Drag will be much more significant than the resistance you get from friction inside a hub which is in proper condition.
Who is better, Grease or oil??
Always use grease on a bearing interface, unless specified by the manufacturer. Grease has far better water resistance than oil. For DT hubs, the molykote grease is recommended.

My 350 rear hub is almost silent?
ride it for hundreds km, let the grease evaporated and leave a bit of it, then its gonna make.good sound
Regrease it, that's what I am doing now
What's the trade off? I mean why not make all wheels with the 54t ratchet for even faster engagement?
Ever so slightly more resistance with more teeth.
Price?
Increased chance of pedal kickback as the rear suspension moves.
Christopher Bøgh Andersen Not if youre pedaling! Thats how you go faster!
18T is faster and has lower rolling resistance?
Yes but 20° of engagement 54t has 5°
So in case I want a less annoying and more silent hub I go with 18 teeth?
You show me a Hugi that was made silent before i comment on that
Hello does anybody know if you could do it with any DT Swiss rims???
You can do it if you have a DT swiss star ratchet hub. If you have a 3pawl hub, you cannot.
Toop sestem
54t the best
What bike is it
Pivot Mach 429 Trail. I have the same bike and it's spectacular
Beginner question, but why is more buzz a good thing?
A louder hub usually means more engagement, which is a good thing for technical climbs and just in general. Also because hub go ZzzzzzzZzzZZZzz
wow, that engagement difference is pretty significant. how much would that 18-36 upgrade cost?
my engagement dt swiss 54t cost 120$
Upgrade? The wheel spins longer with 18 than with 36
Great vid, How did you make it so loud!?
By what this video is
Hello
Why would you actually use 18T ratchet when the 36T provides the advantage of double the engagement?
There's a tiny bit more resistance with 36 teeth when freewheeling and some people might not like the sound.
Jerome Anker It comes stock so you have to give them another 60$ for the kit.
Lika plane haahah
my hub doesn't sound like that I have the same rim just the way it comes from factory....it's very quiet...it's ts this ok?
Brand new ones are quieter to start with, it will get louder with more use. You could open it up and have a look and use less grease.
mine too the hud its not as luod as this :(
ride!
hi.from spain. please help with this. i have a roval cl50 in my road bike ,with Rear Hub: Roval AF1, sealed cartridge bearings, DT Swiss 350. its compatible with the 36t kit??thanks so much
Yes it is
Jet engine
Throw out your scales, 18T weigh 15 grams, he changed it to 54t
Here's a fun idea:
since 36 is an even multiple of 18.
What if you installed an 18 star meshing with a 36?
in theory,
you still get the 36 position 10degree ratcheting, but now instead of just throwing away the old stars, you have created two identical sets; one as a spare.
double the value?
The angle of engagement for 18 and 36 are not the same, so it would not work
36 divides evenly by 18, it would just mesh every-other-tooth
The teeth on the 36t may be smaller in size vs. the height of the teeth on the 18t gear.
Set aside the theory, do the actual experimentation to know the result!
specialchild WHY?!?!youll have a weaker engagement. This is the drive mechanism in your wheel. Its what makes you move!!!!!
36 is better.
72 engagements per rotation with near indestructible bearings is best. Chris king all the way
My ratchets have worn already after owning my 1501 wheels that came on my m team Orbea Rallon. Probably had around 15-20 hours riding.
Lies.
BS
imo it should come standard, another way to squeeze money out of the consumer
that sound is always so annoying bikes, my e bike has that sound to
The best upgrade for DT Swiss hubs is to replace them with Chris King
Stricmic000
YUP! Better driver(much
larger)Waaaay better bearings. CK is the only guy who makes his own proprietary bearings. Everybody else uses off the shelf sealed cartridges of varying quality.
I have a Classic hub 24 years old still on the original bearings! Probably over 100000 miles on this hub, on and off road and all weathers.
Still gotta maintain these hubs though! Thats the key to make anything last a long time.
Your rotor is rubbing..
Double engagement = double friction...
TRUTH SEEKER only friction is when you stop to pedal... So i guess don't stop pedalling?
Cordier Theuns actually if you stop pedalling you are probably slowing down so a bit more friction could be helpful..I dont like the horrible noise though....
That's a noisy drive chain, double ring 4 eva
How is this better? I have DT Swiss wheels and I hear this awful noise on the road, and it's so loud and screeching it's distracting. Why would anyone want hubs this noisy?
better engagement, for technical mountain climbs its a serious upgrade.
I don't even notice mine unless I'm intentionally listening for it.
Wind noise or my ear buds take care of any unwanted sounds generally.
When I do listen for it, its kinda like music.
Some roadies and their issues with noise are the bane to all us mechanics existence. Get a fixed gear, mine is silent, except tires on the ground. Get a silent hub! Some Shimano’s are pretty quiet. Stealth makes a silent hub.
Pedaling more helps too! Thats where that fixed gear comes in!
One thing I don't know is, what did I just watch? what is a rachet system, do other brands have the same? how is this a thing? I know what ABS does in a car's braking system but, what does a rachet system do in bike hubs rather than screaming to the world, "look at me!, I am alive, recognize my existence!"?
It decreases the distance your cranks turn before they engage the hub. This makes technical climbs, where you need to stop pedaling at some point then begin again, much easier. You don't eat up all of your pedal stroke before you engage your hub making for a more efficient power transfer. Your ignorance is ok, but the way you ask your question is not. You're condemning something without having any knowledge of it. You would do well to carry this lesson throughout all aspects of your life.
Also, no, other brands use other configurations of ratchet systems. Most use a pawl and ring system wherein the internal spring loaded pawls engage against a ratchet ring around the circumference of the system (e.g., Hope, Industry 9, Novatec). There are a few brands that are "silent". This is accomplished using a sprag clutch. Go educate yourself!
@@sickbassdrop I'm glad I have effectively moves a nerve in you with my logic. You see when someone gets so abrasive and defensive when mildly criticized and they throw a prebubescent tempertantrum, you know you hit the right nerve because, they couldn't logically debunk the initial point made.
That said, culd you tell me, what system was the winner/winners of the XC racers been using for the past 10years or even 5 to make things easier. Since DT-Swiss rachet is so good that we gotta have it. Tell me are the winners using this system? if not, maybe it just ain't all that, have you thought of that?
@@kay19833 I'm pretty positive that I answered the questions you posed in your original post. No nerves were hit. I was simply providing some education. I could have belittled you and told you to go look it up yourself or just insulted you and left it at that. I am honestly at a loss as to where you made the determination that I was being defensive. I would need a point to defend first, correct? You must be in serious need of conflict because you're really reaching to accuse me of throwing a tantrum. I'm convinced now that you never actually read my reply.
Ok, I'll bite. The last 10 years of UCI XCO World Cup championship have been dominated by both Nino Schurter and Julien Absalon with the exception of Kulhavy, in 2011, I believe. The system and equipment that top pros use means nothing to average Joe riders. Nino Schurter could beat any of us with a Wal-Mart bike. But to answer your challenge Nino has run DT Swiss XMC (or XRC) 1200 wheels in almost every race for the past 3 years and he uses the DT Swiss 36 tooth ratchet system. Please, feel free to use whatever system you want.
@@sickbassdrop well said
I have a better upgrade for all those DT swiss riders. It's free! It involves a cardboard and the spokes. You take a small piece of cardboard and fold it. Then you place it between the fork and spokes. It makes even more annoying noise. However I know: you won't accept free because you love to overpay 10x for simple things.
Had to stop watching as soon as he put them on the scales..
why
lol, weight weenie!
