HAMMER - the nickname that became synonymous with the Original E Class Sized AMG in the W124 series. Not just because it was a 200K sleeper that would make Ferrari Testarossa drivers cower in the slow lane - but thanks to the bombastic V8 units under the hood that would hit like a hammer.
The news of the V8's return to the #E63 was recently debunked by AMG's CEO, so for now, it seems like the current #mercedesamg E63 S may well be the last to have the power unit linking to the original beast, and every E AMG since.
Today, we ask the question if this gen of E63 is a future classic, and if we should buy one and hold on to it! We will also celebrate this final V8 E63, as it’s been the best generation of this car ever. And I’m also going to share with you the best mods you can do to extract the potential of your E Class too!!
This generation of E63 has been one of the best, if not the best. It was the first mainstream performance sedan to introduce switchable 4WD to RWD drift mode, thanks to the decoupling of the front axle. A move quickly mimicked by rivals like the M5, and to this day not matched by Audi and others. It was the only one in segment to have dynamic engine mounts, which for the longest time made it the most dynamic of the segment.
In fact, for its entire lifetime of 8 years, the E63 Wagon sat as the king of the Nurburgring as the world’s quickest wagon. Only recently dethroned by the M3 Touring.
The engine is superior, one of the world’s best in the 4.0 twin scroll bi turbo engine making 612BHP, 850NM and 0-60 in 3.5 - also in pre-facelift E63. It also has the engine on rivals with it’s gearbox, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G with a wet multi-plate start-off clutch, instead of the slow torque converters of rivals. It’s an engine and gearbox combo that will remain relevant for years to come too, as the Euro 7 version will be based on this one, and will last a decade at least!
This is the final edition, and is technically identical to the standard E63 S. Unique points include the Magno Graphite paint work, final edition livery, and a unique wheel finish of chrome with black. The Afflaterbach badge also finds its way on the c pillar - all mimicking the C63 final edition. The interior is also unique.

Now, let’s move on to mods!! One problem with my car, is like every other one in the UK - it came delivered with the basic LED headlights. While not looking so different, their performance at night is mildly pathetic. And on your E63, it seems insane to have the basic lights, all thanks to chip shortage.
So, naturally, I upgraded them. And I’m going to show you how you can do it too - along with a tonne of basic mods I’ve done on my E63, which can be done on most Mercedes cars! You won’t want to miss this.

Currently own a 2021 E63S FL and prior to this many E63 and E55 spanning over the past 15 years. I will not buy a W214 simply because there is no V8 i will probably look toward the next M5 and i have never owned a BMW. Sadly MB and AMG will lose more and more loyal customers as they phase out their V8s.

Let's not forget, the V8 in the pre-facelift W213 is more than just an engine, it's a piece of art that resonates with the soul of every car enthusiast. That growl is iconic! Honestly, I feel like the pre-facelift versions are going to become collector's items soon enough. Especially as we venture further into the era of smaller engines and electric powertrains. Also, to everyone debating on trading in their C63s for an E63s or vice versa, just remember that the value isn't only monetary; it's emotional. These cars are about more than just resale value; they're about the joy they bring to our lives. But if you're going to keep one long-term, my bet's on any variant with that glorious V8.

If i had the facelift w213, i would install an IWC analog clock right where it was in the center console of the pre-facelift w213. That void right in the center just annoys me.
The 4 cylinder C63 will be a complete non seller, they wont kill the V8 once they see.
of course they will... laws are already coming in to say that manufacturers are only allowed certain emissions, and that cars must at least be hybrid (likely to go to full electric in the future) - They wont have a choice, and neither will the consumer

I have a 2018 (w213/c238) e400 coupe. I don't think cars from other manufacturers have caught up to the w213 in terms of luxury and design, and MB itself has gone backwards with their cut+paste capacitive touch interiors. I plan on upgrading my E-coupe to a newer of the same to drive daily and getting my hands on either a 222 S560 with a Designo interior spec or a 213 E63 sedan to keep. This is the modern dark ages for cars.
The preface lift us just simply more beautiful
it depends. I also love the pre lci but not only for the looks. I believe the rear of the facelift is beside of the exhaust pipes much nicer.
However the iwc clock and 2019 amg steering wheel make the previous interior so much better in my opinion

i personally love the new facelift i think the downturned grill makes it look more angry, and the rear lights look more elegant. Thats just my opinion though.

@@Dr.Hydroxy the old grill is beautiful paired with the pre facelift led lights, all amgs had this type of grill before. Now every amg looks the same with the panamericana grill, it's a shame.
They should have left the front the way it was and only change the rear

My 2020 GTC coupe is a long term keeper for sure in my collection. Always thought of it as a GTR Touring. My first and only amg and merc. Next will be an old school amg but nothing current

are the exhaust valves opened to 100%, or do they sit at 70% (open) like normal when would push the 'exhaust' button?

The pre facelift looks and sounds better
So good. However the introduction of the flatplane-crank kind of made the sound of the V8 a bit too clean, but still very desirable!
The Pre FL front end looks much more aggressive, can't be confused with an E43 and sounds better also.
Pedant comment : the Hammer's engine was bored AND stroked to increase displacement - not just bored, like all MB - AMG enhanced engines.
Hi Raz, great content. I’ve got the C63s Final Edition but was thinking of trading it in for the E63s First Edition. Not sure which one will hold its value the best while being lots of fun.
Now that you mention it, it’ll probably be the C class considering they aren’t going back to V8 until 2026. Maybe the new E Class will have a nice 6 Cylinder so it won’t be that bad. But from 8 to 4, yeah idk
Keep the C63s coupe because its been completely discontinued from what was said. Even if the V8 comes back to the C63s there wont be a coupe!
I was so close to trading up my 21 C63 estate to an E63, but then the night package bits on the front end started discolouring. They now look blueish. Mercedes say its not a problem and wont replace. Seems to be a common problem as they have a used car on the lot with the same problem. So do I want to spend another chunk of cash on a future classic when i will be worrying about glass black parts tuning blue in under 2 years?? Sadly not. My first ever Mercedes too

The 4Matic+ is nice, but adds weight and i still haven't figured out why they would not let you choose which ESP mode you want to use in "drift mode". You must switch ESP completely off which is very dangerous on public roads. So if you just want to enjoy your car in RWD mode and drive it like a C63s W205 for example, you always have to fear to hit the next tree if you are not careful...
4matic+ is the worst. Nothing like a real RWD, that’s why the new AMG GT is really bad
that makes no sense at all. Why would you want RWD but then have the Esp system cut the power? What's the point then if you could leave it in 4 matic, an already rear biased awd system?

If you already have the possibility to provide an authentic RWD feeling, why not let the driver choose the ESP setting? If you want to drift you could still select RWD mode and ESP off.

I don't understand how Mercedes have managed to handle this whole situation so badly. For a manufacturer famed for their V8 engines above *everything* else, who produced some of the most emotional, brutish and muscular cars in the last decade... and they've cut out their soul. Bragging rights sells these cars, not just horsepower and technology, and when you're chatting in the carpark with your mates, the last thing you want is to look at their M5 or RS6 and think "If only I had 4 more cylinders".

I'm not buying a 100 grand E63 Amg without the big Burmester high-end system. Really adds up to the luxurious touch of the e class'es interior in terms of sound and asthetics. It is a shame Mercedes didn't manage to bring it back for the final edition...

Apart from very early examples, it has the 'regular' Burmester system, which itself is excellent. Very few E63S have the high end system, particularly because of Mercedes not adding to list of available options, bizarre as that is. @@asjalirfan6827

It’s an incredible car, the V8 is so effortless and sounds wonderful. Maybe the upcoming M5 will gain more sales if the next gen E63 doesn’t have a V8?
Next gen m5 will be a hybrid v8 and much heavier. Not sure if sales will increase for a hybrid.

@@v12-s65 Well I suppose that's modern BMW for you. Maybe the new M5 will start to look more appealing once they've revealed the full design. It's one thing to see photos, but in person it might look better? A bit like the G80 M3, the grille may be ugly, but overall the car seems to look pretty good and on public roads it has a lot of presence.

What I don’t understand: previous S63 = 612 hp V8 E63s = 612 hp V8, new S63 802 hp V8 phev E63 ?? hp 6 cylinder. Does not make sense

I’m I the only one thinking the front grill is ugly or at least looks misplaced, the car looks incomplete, they tried so hard making the grill look different from previous models that it looks like it belongs to another car , maybe it’s just me , I’m not sure, I’ve been driving Mercedes since 2000 and this last design really got me upset

Generous review of a great car. But not a future classic. Expensive to run, still depreciating, MB interiors age as they are more about the tech than a lux interior. Drink now or within 5 years.
If there’s no E63 V8 coming after this - it’s automatically a future classic for AMG customers.
@@RemoveBeforeRaceit’s taking a bit of a risk because they’ve produced so many V8s they’re not particularly rare and the final edition command such a high price in Australia and in the event the next E63 is a V8 then the whole reason this car is valuable flies out the window.

No point getting an E63..is just worse than the M5 on every metric.
Nowhere near as comfortable as an M5/M5 competition. DCT isn't as good as the Torque converter for daily driving.
BMW M5 also kills it on a 1/4 mile with more power and less weight. The handling is better too.
Then there's an M5 CS which is more sports focussed and visceral. So where exactly does that leave the E63s?
Not to mention the terrible Mercedes build quality and infamous interior creeks.
The M5 class of cars..is still dominated by BMW M5
Sure the sound is good, but nowhere loud and visceral as the optional extra ///M performance titanium racing exhaust.
