  • Lone Justice - Ways to be wicked / Sweet Sweet Bay as performed live on Whistle Test, London, England June 4th 1985, recorded by me from terrestrial broadcast, onto Scotch L-750 Betamax video tape using a Sony C6 MK2. Tape archive number 033
Lone Justice began as part of the L.A. cowpunk scene of the 1980s, inspired by Hedgecock and McKee's shared affection for rockabilly and country music. The group started out as a strict cover band, but after the additions of bassist David Harrington and drummer Don Willens, they began to compose their own material. Marvin Etzioni was initially brought in as producer, arranger and songwriter for the band, but ended up replacing Harrington as bassist in 1983. By 1984, Don Heffington had replaced Willens as drummer. Their early sound was a fusion of country music and punk rock with rockabilly elements, but by the time of their first album, the band had begun to incorporate elements of roots rock and singer-songwriter styles. Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was a frequent guest musician at their live shows.[citation needed] The band earned early support from Dolly Parton, who attended one of their club shows and later recalled McKee as "The greatest girl singer any band could ever have."
Lone Justice developed their initial following within the Los Angeles music scene. Local rock journalist Stann Findelle reported in Performance magazine that the band "stole the show" at the Whisky a Go Go from headliner Arthur Lee, who was attempting a comeback that night, but left after two songs. Linda Ronstadt was introduced to the band by wardrobe stylist Genny Schorr. Linda Ronstadt made a call to David Geffen and they were signed to Geffen Records amid a flurry of publicity.
    Lone Justice in 1985
Their self-titled debut appeared in 1985, followed by a tour in support of U2. For touring, the band augmented their line-up with guitarist Tony Gilkyson, who left the band in 1986. Produced by Jimmy Iovine, the album received some significant critical reviews, including that of Jimmy Guterman, then a critic at Rolling Stone, who placed it in his list of the best albums ever made. The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop Critics Poll for 1985 ranked it No. 24. Nonetheless, the album failed to connect with country or rock audiences and the whole enterprise suffered from excessive pre-release promotion that "raised expectations... [the album] couldn't possibly satisfy". Two singles fizzled - "Sweet, Sweet Baby (I'm Falling)" and "Ways To Be Wicked", the latter written by Tom Petty and Mike Campbell - and the album did not meet commercial expectations.

Agree ! While my friends were into the Sunset hair metal crap I was heavily into this band , Los Lobos, Concrete Blond etc.
Lone Justice was a truly underappreciated band !
That 1st record is killer all the way through

Their performance at the ritz was incredible. The band played so
Tight and she had so much attitude and a natural performer . The record company ruined them . Such a shame . Maria had the talent to be one of the biggest stars of the 80s

I stumbled onto that video of their performance at the Ritz and was blown away. Then I listened to their record and asked myself “What tool cleaned it up and watered it down?” The strength of Amria’s vocals doesn’t even come through all that well. Sad!

Used to go see them at The Palladium in Santa Monica. There was a moment when that SoCal country punk scene seemed like it was going to be a big thing. The Beat Farmers are the other name that comes to mind. But Lone Justice were the best of that bunch, especially live. They were a great show. Maria had some Chrissy Hynde energy live, dismissive and sneering but full of heart.

God that debut record was so great! I fell in love with Miss McKee before I even saw anything other than the album cover. That voice and her passion are just like forces of nature. It's a shame that the second album and her own excellent releases never got the exposure they deserved.

When I saw her picture on the album cover, then i played it -- what was that voice doing coming out of this delicate little porcelain doll of a girl? A force of nature.

Cool, buddy! Oh to have had a digital video camera back in the eighties...What happens on the road....but i saw some great gigs. Have a look at Iggy at the Olympia in Paris. I did the light show of his tour of Australia one month earlier and the French show is tame in comparison to those two weeks down under. Keep up the obscure stuff, fella.
