I use that exact machine, love it! I put a nitrile glove over the gas tank filler neck then screw on the cap. No need to drain it. Now we just need snow!

Great video as always Dony. In my case (with an Ariens Deluxe 28) no welding was required. Turned
out I had 2 problems. The first was that the ratchet lever (shown at 9:30 in video) was wedged to the
left of the engagement mechanism instead of riding on it. It was easy to move back with a standard
screw driver. The second problem, and I think this is where many folks may be having an issue, was
an initial failure to understand how this feature works. It DOES NOT operate in 2 wheel drive and
switch to 1 wheel when the lever is pulled and then go back to 2 wheel drive when the lever is
released. Instead, the lever can be thought of as a toggle. So if it's in 2 while drive, pulling and
releasing the lever will put it into 1 wheel drive. To put it back into 2 wheel drive pull and release the
lever a second time.
Hope this helps some folks.
I have this unit and it has been working fine. This video made me realize I haven't serviced those drive components. I lubed and tightened things that were needed and it responds like new again. I use my Air compressor and brush and towel it off after each run which keeps it looking like new. Thanks for the inspirational video.
Dony, I have a snowblower with that exact feature. I listened to your video twice to make sure I heard you correctly and you say that you depress the lever to disengage the wheel and that it's suppose to then re-engage when you let the lever go. That's not quite how it works. On mine you must depress and release the lever to disengage the wheel, you then need to depress and release the lever again to re-engage the wheel. Just my two cents from someone that has that exact and still operational feature on his snowblower. Thanks.

I thread a few sturdy zip ties under the spring and slowly tighten them up to load the spring and hold it out of my way. Then a spread the diff and use a cup of gas and a parts brush free up the rust and old grease. Once the big chunks are gone, I use a wire brush to scrub off as much rust as I can. Slowly rotate all the parts to get access to all of the splines. Once it’s fairly clean, mix some motor oil and antiseize together to create lubricant. Use a brush to work the lube into all of the differential mechanisms. Once it’s all loaded up with lube, cut the zip ties to release the spring. Now your differential works and you didn’t even have to pointlessly destroy your snowblower.
You just added about 10 years of usable life-span to that machine. Thank you for sharing !

I have an Ariens 28" Deluxe, it's a heavy machine and I'd hate to loose that feature. Those parts are still available, you should also do a video on repairing one.
Parts are available to repair it back like new but in this case the parts cost more than the machine is worth so customer opted out!

Got this exact machine. Love that trigger release feature. Gonna lube the crap out of shaft coupler & hope for some more years.
ive always just cleaned them then used light grease and properly adjust the cable....and they work just fine the way they were designed
Hi Donyboy73 if the owner took the pan off every season and lube that area would it still be working ok ? I find that feature very handy in making a tight turn easy .

Power steering delete, not sure I would do this, probably get the parts and fix it, if they are available. But this works if they are just keeping it for a “few” more years
I’ve got nothing but respect for any technique that achieves the desired goal. But, if you haven’t done it previously, I highly recommend collapsing the spring with a few zip ties so that you have full access to all the differential parts and room to spread them apart. Then take the time to thoroughly clean and lubricate it inside and out with antiseize/oil mix.

My machine had the same problem, left tire not engaging. All I did was to drilled a 10/32” hole on the left shaft; between the left tire and the chassis. I added a 10/32” screw and nut. This engaged both tires for life. Simply fix.
I could see notching 2 spots in the left gear opposite those 2 holes in the right gear enough to hold a bolt head then put a bolt and nut in, secure them from slipping out with a hose clamp and tighten, no welding.
No need, it won't slip out. I've been using mine for years with just the gears engaged.

grouse work Donny mate and i know that,s gonna keep the owner out of trouble for a good long while for sure and the rust build up on the friction disc yep i,d get that sanded for better traction as it,s cheaper than replacing it for sure and who knew how cheap and easy this could be to fix up for sure and yep a good thing you had a fire extinguisher 🧯the old spray bottle and i know that,s a must for sure and you did a lovely job on the Welding repair there plus wearing all the right gear is the best prevention to a injury for sure and i hope your enjoying your Autumn/Fall 🍂🍁season over there too and cheers from Australia 🐨🐑🦘🌴🇦🇺 to your area in Canada 🇨🇦 🍁Ontario

Dony, have you ever had an ignition coil move?
On a Craftsman yard vacuum with Tecumseh engine the coil came loose and hit the flywheel, breaking the coil, flywheel blades, and breaking the coil mounting posts. A real mess.

i wonder if a hose clamp on the shaft up against the 2 meshing parts would have held it together instead of permanently welding the pieces together.....just in case a person doesn't have access to a welder
I was thinking the same thing! Maybe a clamp to keep the gear from sliding out and a large clamp around the outer gear to keep it together!
for a home repair, you could just remove the lever, make sure the parts are meshed, maybe throw a little lube in there and be fine.
as a business, tho, you have to make sure your repairs stay.
as a homeowner, it just costs you some time to try less reliable options.
Personally, I'd just try to grease it, and maybe make it an annual thing if I had to.
Although, I have to admit, my blower is over 10 years old, and I always say I'm gonna do all this preventive maintenance, and I've done very very very very little preventive maintenance, lol.
I love my MTD blower, would be nice if it had the EZ-steer in the first place. But bought it very well re-built off a guy for $500. Pretty much a new machine.

Slightly off topic, but -- Are the paddles all the same for the single stage blowers? Is one brand better than the other? Are the extended life paddles any better?
how can you fix it? It makes turning the unit a lot easier. Might be pricey for a shop to do, but what about a DIY'er?
I've got that set up, clean and service it every season with oil and a bit of grease works OK but not perfect . Deleting that easy turn option would be a last resort for me.
I use synthetic grease and have never had a problem, although I did replace the cable as the old one was at the end of the adjustment range. A snow blowing SOB though!
sticky old grease is most of the problem just keep it clean and lubed good and it will work
Even with locked wheels like this and basic machines of that era if you turn while in motion it will turn easily.
I should have paid more attention. What was causing the issue? Was the clutch dog stuck on the shaft?? Why couldn't it just be freed up/lubed and returned to service with this feature working?

I would also use my AC stick welder for this because that's the only one I have.
My Pacemaker will not allow me to weld anymore. Gas brazing is still OK.
My OCD nature of making sure everything is working as designed would never allow me to do that. I'd just remove/clean the gear assembly and lubricate it and get it working as intended. Maybe even modify it to improve on the design. Welding can't really be undone and it just makes the blower harder to use.
Can you replace the part with a new unit. In my case I need to turn the sno-blower at the end of the driveway
I would spray some paint over those welds, that's what I would do!

Just got a craftsman with this feature on both wheels. Guy said it was sitting behind his shed in the sun and rain all summer.
People think those machines are like a shovel, just throw it out back until you need it.

My old 924 series has a pin lock,I never use it in locked position. Locked, its too hard to turn.
How do you handle the customer, who may "miss" the feature that allows for easy turning? Is it too expensive to fix with new parts, or are they unavailable? I would imagine the labor charges would get high, though.
It would have been in the hundreds to repair it like new again so customer opted for this.

I have an even older Ariens with a live axle that uses pins thru each wheel. To even turn without a battle you have to run with one pin out of the wheel, freewheeling, so this guy should be able to do that. I’ve ran with only one wheel driving most of its life lol.
I have a mtd with snow hog tires and it just won't go through the snow unless both wheels are driving.
I tried doing the one wheel thing for a while, but, for me, that was more work than just turning it round locked. Of course, if you do short runs with a lot of turns, maybe the opposite could be true.
Also, if you practice stopping, then hitting the drive lever while pushing the handle to the right, the machine will power itself around into a left hand turn without a lot of effort. Of course, it takes a little room to do the turn, but that's what I do.
I only unpin the wheels in the summer so I can push it around the garage easier.
Ariens Snowblower sales in Ga are pretty bad, naaa really, really bad ! What's snow....you have some young kids down here that have never seen it.

I must agree with @vegamann6252 regular maintenance would keep that feature working for you I wish my 30 year old ARIENS 724 had it, sure looks handy
My Ariens doesn’t have this feature but has removable pins on each wheel to run as a one wheel drive or a two wheel drive. Should I pick one wheel or two wheel drive?
That feature is meant to roll it easier when transporting the machine.
Two wheel drive will give you more drive power but make it harder to turn. One wheel drive will have less drive power but the machine will be harder to turn. When the snow is wet and deep I usually set it up for 2 wheel drive, otherwise if it is light one wheel drive. Keep the axel greased so the wheel comes off easily.
I did the same thing and I seriously regret it. You don't have to weld the gears.

Yes with yearly maintenance, not once every 15 years would have kept it working!
@donyboy73 thanks for responding, the way it looked so rusted I thought by keeping it greased with a good quality grease would have made a big difference.
Road or homeowners salt is the snowblowers worst enemy. Regular factory prescribed maintenance does not cover what needs to be done. New machines must have salt preventive care especially the wheels. Use anti-seize liberally as well as WD40. Pressure wash and lubricate everything before storing. Heated garages increase corrosion.
I don't mean this as a criticism of your approach but wasn't there a way to stick with the original design and just repair it so it would work as it was designed and intended to work? unless the unit was not worth the time and the effort .

People just refuse to maintain their equipment. 1/2 hour once a year to grease/oil everything prevents many issues.
So confused why you did this.... was the cable seized?? that mechanism was working fine? you pull the trigger once... it releases the traction on that side...you pull it again.. it engages the traction ? i've had 3 of these in my shop so far this season and all 3 they have been seized CLOSED! so the assisted steering doesn't work...one customer wanted it fixed 100% the other 2 left if as is...
Why not just fix what’s broken with the lever? Would that be difficult? I have a similar issue but like the functionality of disengaging so it makes it easier to turn.

Wouldn't that thing start working if you hosed it down with penetrating oil? Nice feature if you have to move it around in a tight garage.

You’re wrong on doing that. What happens if you need to remove the shaft for service. Like bearing work etc. Then you can’t do anything if it’s welded..
If I can't fix it, I can fix it so that nobody can fix it? Nah, this is a solution for an old machine that extends its service for some more time. However, I am wondering if Donnie could just drill the axle shaft right up next to the coupling gears and drive in a roll pin to keep the "dogs" engaged.
It did seem to me that even in cleaning the parts prior to welding they meshed much better and moved more freely. Unless it took too long to get at the parts I think my first attempt would have been a thorough, clean and rust removal; then some lube. With annual (or every 5 year ) maintenance it could last a long time.
I don’t have this machine but it looks like the situation isn’t any worse because the splines prevent the mechanism from moving too far to right anyway. Welded or not it looks like the shaft has to be removed by sliding to the right and then angling it out.

This is one of the worst designed out there. For such a well built machine otherwise I don't understand why they ever came up with this. Same with the "auto-turn feature" complete BS.
The steering assist systems on Husqvarna/AYP built machines with the 2 independent levers seems pretty good, it's one of the better and more simple ones I have seen, other than regular lubrication they do not have many problems.
The one on MTD machines is also similar and simple in design but less reliable and wears out.

Yes @@donyboy73 seen just about every make and model out there.
That's not a repair it's a jury rig, now there is no way to unlock the wheel when you want to turn.
Be VERY careful when welding something that you've cleaned with brake cleaner. If there is any remaining brake cleaner on the material it will turn into Phosgene gas that can destroy your lungs in even very small amounts! It is best to NOT use any liquid cleaners on something you are going to weld.
Use the non chlorinated brake cleaner and use a fan when you weld. Phosgene gas isn't something to be dismissed, very real, very dangerous.
I take my wheels off and store them in the freezer

You should never use brake cleaner before welding anything, it gives off very poisonous gasses. Better to just burn the grease.
This can be taken apart and cleaned up without much effort.
That’s right by him welding that part was pretty stupid because you can’t make a turn very easy the new ones don’t have that problem they have a special clutch shame on Mr. Donnie
