My Grandfather recently passed away, and 2 of the items he actually gave me 2 days before passing were 2, 1911's, and I most definitely wanted to learn what I could about these historical, and sentimental guns. You walked me through cleaning my first gun, and gave me the knowledge to preserve something special that was once my grandfather's and now mine. Thank you very much sir!

Also much appreciate the tip about being careful not to scratch the finish on the gun with the slide lock. Thank you sir!

One of the local gun shops just started carrying Ballistol, so I picked up a couple of cans out of curiosity. As I was getting back into my truck, the door hinge made a loud squeak and a squeel. Just bought a new 1911 partly out of nostalgia and partly because I wanted more stopping power for my EDC (had been carrying the Walther PPS in 9mm). As it had been so long since I field-stripped and cleaned one, came here to see how the Master does it. It was definitely helpful seeing how he does it. Will be going out and getting some Ballistol for sure.

I really enjoyed this video i always get a lot of knowledge about firearms when i watch them . I just purchased a 1971 Colt 45 series 70 and now from this video i know how to break it down clean it and put it back together with ease .
Probably the best gun cleaning video out there. Get the critical parts soaked, then wipe it down, no need to get the patches all white, then lube. My choice is Hoppes and Break Free, but the same technique. Good video.
That's generally good advice, except for Dan Wesson guns with a Duty Treat finish. Don't use tape on those surfaces as it may leave permanent blotches or cloudiness.
The area most people do not clean is the link pin. Also, most forget to clean the magazine. Most do not realize that carbon does impregnate the magazine spring and thus may affect magazine feed problems. Add to this that carbon may cause the spring to not react properly. Other then that, most will clean it well. One must also clean the magazine well. That aids in the ejection of a magazine.
I bought my son a Kimber Eclipse for his 18th birthday - 16 years ago. Before he ever fired it he took a 1911 cleaning class with 2 police offices who taught at a local gun range. One of the instructors personal carry weapon was a Kimber Eclipse (earlier model as I recall). Smartest thing I ever did - he started off right
Thanks Hickok! Your suggestion of leaving the barrel link forward when reassembling the 1911 means that I don't fear cleaning my gun because it's going to take 40 minutes just to put it back together again. I love shooting 1911s again!!!
No kidding... Ive shot my sr1911 3 times now (200 rounds) and cleaned it 3 times, always going back to tutorial vids to re assemble it lol. But this third time I had a hell of a time gettin the damn pin in! Finally got the bugger...

Ballistol is a great product - it was developed by the Germans prior to WWI - it's a coal-tar based lube/cleaner and can be used among other things, for preserving leather...Gun Tests Magazine did a comparison test some time in the late 80s/early 90s and found Ballistol to be among the BEST cleaninmg products available...it can be mixed with water (moose milk) and used as a corrosive ammo salts neutralizer as well as a cleaner for black powder firearms...Great work, Hickok!!! Thanks, but as a "civilian armorer," I've found that the best way for me is to hose it down the way I do it. :-)
You are delicious
for 1st time gun owners and beginners this is very educational
Cool. I did everything you did, but with CLP.
I really enjoyed this video i always get a lot of knowledge about firearms when i watch them . I just purchased a 1971 Colt 45 series 70 and now from this video i know how to break it down clean it and put it back together with ease .
Great video, thank you for this in depth tutorial, I learned quite a bit from it
just bought a Para LTC from a co worker, haven't touched a 1911 since the 80's. i needed this refresher
I've been using it on my nickel Colts for over a decade.
Going to clean my grandfather's 1911 for the first time after watching this video, thanks for the insight.
Sir, you have that silky smooth southern voice. Reminds me of Tom Knapp.
I love your videos. I just started getting guns. 37 years old. I got a 1911 rock island. Waiting 4 weeks to get it. Your videos are super helpful.
Bought my first 1911...made that same scratch he talked about the first time I reassembled it.
Mr. Hickok, just wanted to tell you that you are the man! Your videos have really helped me know my handguns alot better. Thank you. Keep it up!
great gun 1911 cleaning tutorial
Probably the best gun cleaning video out there. Get the critical parts soaked, then wipe it down, no need to get the patches all white, then lube. My choice is Hoppes and Break Free, but the same technique. Good video.
I'm glad to see that even you had problems with that stupid pin. Makes me feel better after scratching up my gun.
That's why you buy stainless guns, you can always polish the scratches out ;-)
Good advice, Joshua. I never thought of that.
maybe the blue paint tape
That's generally good advice, except for Dan Wesson guns with a Duty Treat finish. Don't use tape on those surfaces as it may leave permanent blotches or cloudiness.
I was lucky enough to have an older brother with a new Combat Commander. I was able to scratch hell out of his before I got my own.
Thank you Hickok45. Just got my first 1911 and came straight to your channel and cleaned it using your video and I am back up and running.
Thank you so much for this video. It was really helpful.
I just cleaned my new 1911 for the first time with your help. Thanks Hickok!
That aids in the ejection of a magazine.
david giles Clean it well and DON'T oil or lube magazines.
Smartest thing I ever did - he started off right
★★★★★
Very well made cleaning video! I wish I had seen a video this good when I got my first 1911.
Finally got the bugger...
the lube I found works the best for oiling a 1911 is liberal tears.
Lol that's funny!
Looks like another liberal took it literally and the joke went completely over his head, not surprised.
Helps that they're in such abundance these days. I just carry a jug and a MAGA hat with me whenever i go near a college campus.
we_the_people3635 he i have a question if you clean your colt do you then have to re oil it if so then what oil do i use.
Btw. I just got in to the gun world and wanna gain knowledge. Thx!
Being liberal and a gun owner is a conflict of interest. It's like being a pro-marijuana legalization conservative, or a libertarian that supports raising taxes.
Just got Colt Commander! My first 1911, with your help and a quart of Ballistol I am READY. Thanks lyle
Imagine that, in a clean and lube video!

World of Guns: Gun Disassembly was accurate( ゚`A´゚ ;)
Excellent video as always. Straight to the point without a lot of useless chatter.
Man, I just realized I've been over lubing all the wrong parts.
Bufkinator me too. I didn’t know to keep it away from the firing pin area
Bufkinator second video I watched today and both said to be careful not to get lube in the mechanism in the back part of the handle. As a novice to the sport, guess what part I soak with oil! Geez I’m going to have to go back over each Gun and blow out as much as I can and hope for the best.🤬
I didn't hear an explanation, why no lubes in the firing pin?
@Русский парень thank you!
Good to see that you only used Ballistol and not 2 or 3 products to clean your gun. Great video. I love that he supports The Wounded Warrior Project for our war heroes.
