Joy Flemming is probably the most underrated german singer.. she had world star talent.. and if u could understand what she had to say between the songs, she was also a very nice person. Died in 2017.. rip

Funny to hear such old songs in German on this channel.

In Regard to Joy's song... I LOVE her, but I thought the song would have placed better, again, if it had been performed the same way as in the German finals. First, for the contest, they sped the song up, and it clocked in 15 seconds shorter than the previous versions, I know Joy was trying to inject a lot of energy, but to me, it came across as kind of frantic, especially with the sped up arrangement. Her performance at the German final was far superior, IMO... more relaxed and confident. And her dress was WAY nicer.

Joy was a great blues and soul singer from Mannheim (Germany).
Gitte Haenning is from Denmark and a crooner / pop singer.

The Joy Fleming song the clear winner here to me. The chorus totally reminds of another songs that I just can't remember what is - maybe this was the original. The brass part of the first song was great but the song itself was pretty boring to me and sounded like typical German/Scandinavian soft pop from the late 60's into the early 70s. Not my style at all.

Joy hatte eine Wuchtstimme mit Gefühl und Kraft. Ein echtes Monnemer Mädl. Ich hab sie in den 90er Jahren live erlebt. Unvergesslich. Dieses Lied ist heute in Dtd Kult und kann jeder mitsingen. ❤

I'm a big fan of Gitte Haenning, but as far as I know, she didn't like the song she sang very much.
In the German contest, she performed two songs: "Junger Tag" and "Hallo, wie geht es Robert?". The latter a more upbeat song. She preferred that song but the jury chose "Junger Tag"
Joy Fleming was wonderful. Her song is a German ESC classic up to this day.
Her problem was that for the Final in Stockholm, she had a catastrophic dresser and hair dresser, she looked much better in the German pre Final!
Anyway, in the 70ies and 80ies, Germany had so many great singers, they sang live in German TV, be it Vicky Leandros, Katja Ebstein, Mary Roos, Ingrid Peters, Gitte Haenning, Wencke Myrrhe, Lena Valaitis, the list is endless...

The unfortunate thing about the performance of Junger Tag, and the entire 1973 contest... is the contest was marred by poor sound mixing. Not sure if you notice, but the brass section just blows you out of your chair, yet the string section is not heard AT ALL. Those sections in the verses where she has basically no accompaniment behind her (except piano) is supposed to be all strings playing that portion. If you check out her performance at the German final, you can see the song the way it was meant to be heard:
