Fleming & Berry (Joy Fleming & Marc Berry) competed in Ein Lied für Berlin, the German National Final for Eurovision 1986 where they finished 4th.
Both artists had prior ESC experience. Fleming had represented Germany in 1975 with the evergreen " Ein Lied kann eine Brücke sein", and Berry had represented Austria in 1980 with the catchy "Du bist Musik" as part of the group Blue Danube.

If musical quality alone decided these contests then this should've won, this or the entries of Headline or Günther-Eric Thöner (the audience particularly favoured the latter that night). All three songs are more international sounding than the winner which had a more typical Schlager vibe, this is more pop/rock and a stronger composition. Nothing wrong with the winner as such, it did quite well at the ESC.

Joy and the song deserved so much better than that lineup. She's a powerhouse - with better backup, this could have done so well in Bergen.
Germany made the right decision that year with Ingrid Peters, and she should have done much better than 8th. However, I do like this song - a very typical pop ballad of the mid 1980s and obviously enhanced by the late Joy Fleming's wonderful vocals. Has a bit of a "Solid" by Ashford and Simpson meets "Sara" by Starship vibe. Soul inspired with some pop influences. That woman could have sang the Hamburg phonebook and it still would have been brilliant! In studio, it's fine but live - they were styled badly, Berry's vocals weren't that strong and don't get me started on the flautist on backing - she was awful! Surely they could have found a better backing vocalist or got Joy herself to have done that part? A shame, as it could have made a fine entry for Germany that year.

Everybody except Joy, was out of tune. The first performance of Berry is histerical and the flautist should have kept playing the flute.
