I used to enjoy playing this game as a white robe sometimes to guide newer players. I imagine Peksa is also a white robe, but had the option turned off. When you unlock all the secrets in the game, you get the option to turn your robe and scarf white, and your scarf gets very long and slowly refills automatically when you are on the ground. Basically a great toolkit to help someone have a fun first run, and you can show them (some) of the secrets to help them have a good experience. Some people don't like playing as a white robe, because it is sort of like easy mode, and the other player might rely on you too much to solve the puzzles, thus missing out on some of the fun of solving the game themselves. However, seeing the white robe is also pretty cool, and the other player can have a goal they might strive for at that point. I kind of consider it rude to show a new player all of the secrets though.. best to leave some undiscovered so they can play again to discover some new things themselves. Peksa did this very well, showing you a few things you were missing, but not chirping and leading you to every secret.
It's funny how common this attitude - let the new player lead - is prevalent in this game where it's so consistently the opposite in every other game ever, co-op or not. It's always about "I know what to do, I lead, you follow" except here, where it's "I know where to go, so you lead and we'll see what happens" instead.
The first time I played this, I was lucky enough to also get a player in my world and I got so emotional at the snowy mountain and just towards the end as I get to play with this stranger. I swear Journey players are the sweetest 😭
Hey y’all! I’ve never actually played Journey but I know that the company who made Journey made another game that’s very similar. It’s called Sky: Children of light and it has a similar flight mechanic and multiplayer interactions. There’s lots of player customization for your avatars and the community for the game is very active. You two can even play together if you want. It’s a very relaxing game. It is a mobile name though, but it’s on the Switch as well.
Also, might I add, the chirps and everything is exactly the same. There’s even little emotes you can do as well. There’s seasonal events where you can unlock new cosmetics and it adds more to the story as well. The community is honestly one of the best things. You start by lighting each other’s candles and progressing your friendship and then eventually you can unlock text chat with your friend.
Journey is my absolute favorite game of all time and every time I hear the music or watch someone play I just start sobbing. The story isn't straight-foward and there's a lot that's open to interpretation, which makes it incredibly unique. When you get the chance, I recommend you look up the story behind "Apotheosis," the second-to-last song in the game's soundtrack. Austin Wintory is an incredible composer. Thank you for playing this and sharing the uncut, I'm so glad I got to see you play (even if it wasn't in real time).
Heeey what a nice surprise!! my final assignment in graphic design was all about this game! I love Journey! So nice to see you guys have a genuine first impression with this game!
So much thought was put into this game, design relationships, game design and how this was all presented to the player without HUDs... this game is a master piece! please guys, do look further into it when you get the time!
I have had some great companions on Journey but wow! You guys have no idea how phenomenally lucky you got with Peksa! Really just so pro. I encourage you to play more. It has never lost the wonder for me. I wish I could see the looks on your faces the first time you see a player in WHITE robes.
I've made several non-gamer friends play through Journey - it's so approachable, short enough to play in one sitting, and just absolutely beautiful! On my and my husband's third playthrough we were matched with a wonderful white-robe, who showed us to areas we had completely missed. What a beautiful community. I also used to come back to the color changing level on Flower many times, another gorgeous game by the same devs, and the first game I ever let my daughter play because it was so easy to get into - when she was 2 or so. ThatGameCompany has a place in my heart forever. ❤ What a wholesome ending to a great stream!
One of the best nights of my life was seeing a live play through of this game with the actual composer and a live orchestra 🤩 it was so interesting to see how they shifted between soundtracks between various scenes as students played the game. Honestly such an incredible experience
I absolutely love this game, glad you two enjoyed it. Peksa was an amazing journey companion, making sure to keep up with you, letting you explore where you wanted to but still helping to nudge you here and there to help you find a few of the glowy bits and storyboards. I think it would be awesome to see you play again sometime!
This was so uplifting to watch, partly because of how much E+K were into it, and partly the stunning soundtrack, which affected me even more than the graphics and even more than the 'companion' (although that was pretty great, and I'll be asking Santa for a Peksa of my own this Christmas). End of a chill weekend, normally Sunday nights are a little sad for no particular reason, but tonight they're happy tears. Thank you E+K and Peksa 💞
Not for nothing - if the soundtrack resonated, you may enjoy knowing that the composer (Austin Wintory, link on YT is: ua-cam.com/users/awintory ) has re-released the an anniversary edition of the score (10 years, I think?) and is also an all around cool guy. There is a wealth of stuff on his channel from interesting discussions and explorations of music to complete OST's and more. No, I'm not sponsored, just a fan, lol. Anyway, if you liked it, you might find more that you enjoy. Have fun!
Another cute game by these people is Flower that not a lot of people talk about. Where you're the wind and you carry a flower petal though really pretty landscapes. There are a few puzzles and a wordless story like this one.
After Journey, one of the core developers from Journey split from thatgamecompany to start his own development studio and make Abzu. The rest of the team worked on Sky: Children of the Light (a free mobile game which is apparently getting a PC port... here's hoping it doesn't end up Steam exclusive). Doesn't take away from the game - at all - and it had the same composer who made the music for Journey as well, but "the same people as Journey" is a bit of a misrepresentation of who made Abzu.
i love this game, I never managed to find somebody during my runs on PC sadly but these interactions and playing together vs alone gives it a very different and wholesome feeling!
Journey!!!! I remember my brother-in-law showing it to me almost 3 or 4 years ago and I just played it the whole day. So beautiful, so simple yet intricate, so calming and just great! I'm so happy you finally played it!
Oh hey, if anyone is wondering about that weird listing shape when they got the Ancestors achievement: that's from an earlier game they made called Flow.
I got SO excited when I heard you all were going to play this game. I watched a Let's Play several years ago and have loved it ever since. It also makes me want to try to figure out how to play online so I can hang out with other people.
Such a perfect playthrough, you got a good pairing with the random player, a good understanding of game mechanics, a good understanding of the story, such a satisfying vod. (I know people making mistakes and not finishing a game perfectly the way we want it is perfectly normal, but Can you blame me if I like the way someone plays too 😅)
That cool little swimmy creature in the secret room down in the second-to-last level was a throwback to FlOw -- the first game in this trio from ThatGameCompany. 💛
