- Hahaha, I'll get there eventually!! So in this video I brought the truck home for the weekend and bought some polishing equipment to try my own hand at polishing! I know, contrary to what I said in my walk around video, but I figured I'd at least give it a go; for educational purposes...? Sure we'll go with that.
I did eventually figure out how to do it (off camera of course) so I'll do an update video later when I get a chance to do the rest of the truck.
2006 Peterbilt 379.
There can't possibly be a Pink Floyd album I haven't heard. Oh...it's yours! 👍👍 Truck looks great!
You did a good job man👍🏾 like I always told people I’m no pro but she looks great at 30mph/ 48kph .. keep on it man, you’re doing great
Good job, great music. I use a 9 inch grinder with polishing , you know ur doin it right when it feels like the grinder could kill you at any moment
About four minutes in I see “the boss” in the cab skirts reflection! Guess you needed some guidance. Lol. Lots of elbow grease but worth it. Enjoy the vids! Take care.
Everybody knows who's the boss, in a she/he relationship...
Aluminium polishing is a bit of a dark art. I’ve done loads over the years and for a non pro like me I just take my time and keep at it. Don’t use too much of the polish bar and keep pressure constant - you’ll figure it out. There’s tons of guys on UA-cam that show you how to do it but they can’t teach you what pressure to use and when to add more polish. Keep at it and it will become second nature.
PS really enjoyed your music👍 I’ll keep watching from 🇬🇧
Great job!!! Beatiful Peterbilt 379 👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻🔥💯
You gotta alotta ❤ did it all the time after driving 43 years now do what I can lov ur vids worked for a.co in Montreal hard to keep a truck shiny
17:05 wow, that is awesome, like a mirror! Great job!
01:10 yes, Pink Floyd was the first what I thought about while listening to that guitar solo. Nice music!
Great music, Floydishness is exactly what I was hearing when you actually put up that's what it was... Nice..
True pride of ownership! You are completely transforming this truck!
Recently found your channel .. what a brilliant effort polishing that alloy .. I hope you were pleased and proud .. regards from a retired heavy vehicle mechanic England.
All I can say is “Wow” great job👌
Good from far and far from good seems to be the theme with my 379. She was kinda rough when i bought it but slowly getting it fixed up. Like you said, it's better than it was...
Better than it was... each and every time...
Pride comes with hard work, the truck is lookin good
Great music! And beautiful truck
Its an art to polish, myself I like having the pro’s do it. Plus they can knock it out in no time. I’ll still give you an A for effort, be safe.
Looks great! You put in a lot of work and it payed off!👏👏👏👍
Sweet, can’t wait to see u on the road
Ugg, been there -done dat. But after all the labor the outcome is worth it!
Great job that Pete is such a beautiful truck I used to drive one like that thank you for sharing
Hello my friend from North Carolina great job I enjoy ploshing on truck's it's a lot work but it's worth it.
Renegade hand polish is a really good product to use to keep it nice it’s what I use every weekend. Truck is looking good keep it up
Man that's a nice truck. I know you have fun driving that thing.
Sup again from St. Louis! Great job on the polishing and also great music you made fam.
Thank you for sharing! Love for the trucks don't come easy!
I'm not much of a metal polisher but I've done alot of paint polishing the haze usually shows from to much sanding or to much compound. Heat transfer is a huge factor in a consistent shine.watch a few of Evan Stegers videos. He's a will known metal polisher seen alot of his work through big rig videos check him out might give u some hints.
P.s What company do u drive for?
Thanks man for the tips, I’ll have to play around with the settings next time, I’ll also check out his vids!
And I work for a small four truck operation out of Ontario Canada.
Yea, I watched a few of his videos on tanks & wheels. I like the one about different pressures & what the finish will look like. There's another guy that takes a scrapyard tank (huge dent), he shows how to sand & polish a uncut tank. Which is about where I would start with Matt's tanks but I would make a judgement by feel.
Hand polished my company truck uncut tanks once, used never dull to cut them & polished them buy hand twice with Mothers Aluminum Polish in about a weeks time. They looked pretty good & got quite a few complements (not directly) on the radio!
Considering the salt and gravel pits you have been known to frequent, to that's looking sharp.
Looks good. Cool rig
Thanks bud!
We use 3m rubbing compound with a wool pad on our buffers at a slow speed. The longer you hold it there the more it shines. The wax after that. Works great way less mess
A beautiful truck just the same......love your videos.....fan from Mississauga ont
Love the music man....upload some more I like it
very awesome and looks good great work on your truck ❤️❤️☺️☺️
Hell of a truck drivin dude for sure!
Pride In Your Ride!!
Keep it up 👍
Aluminum is so nasty! We use to joke about motorcycle riders that had "too much chrome". We said "Lots of chrome don't get you home." Then we realized that keeping aluminum looking nice took way too much time so we chromed everything or bought it chromed. One thing about aluminum is that it can pit and corrode so it is important to wash your aluminum very well then commence with your sand paper before using polishing pastes. Then you can buff it. Lots of work all the time for an OTR owner. If you can ever get your aluminum to look nice then keeping it that way isn't difficult. Good luck! Keep at it!
wow...that must have taken ages, but it looks great!
I’m sure there will be several tell you how to polish, so my two cents, first thing, it’s a lot of work. I started with 300 grit, I wet sanded, then 400, 600, 800, 1200, 2000, 5000, once you get there it’s pretty bright, I then buffed with some compound from a trucker, I was doing motorcycle parts nothing large like a big rig, almost forgot the first step was to clean tanks with acid, old style wheel cleaner
Are you insane? 180,320,400 and end with 600 Professional polishers would laugh at 1000 and 5000,😂
That's a lot of work. I remember seeing a good video a while back about polishing, I'm see If I can find it for you.
Watch this guy: - m.ua-cam.com/video/Re8bbEYGAzk/v-deo.html
A can of Mothers aluminum polish and some good ol fashion elbow grease goes a long ways. Takes some time but you’ll love the results
Such a nice truck man. High powered CAT too. Awesome color. Sharp rig man. I work for a towing and recovery company. I do not own my own truck. It’s company truck. If I did work like you, I have to travel far and lug freight I’d buy a early 2000s to 2007 ( maybe brand new) kenworth W900L with studio sleeper or a Pete 379 or 389 with the large sleeper. Sharp trucks. High power twin turbo CAT in em too I’d get. Truck I drive is a 2005 Kenworth W900L 75 ton rotator we installed on it. Used to be lowboy truck. Has miller 2017 75 ton rotator unit on it. Built 700+hp twin turbo coal rolling C15 acert CAT under the hood. Incredible truck. Stock too. Your Pete with that 600 CAT. Stock them CATs are amazing engines. Torque and power 💪🏼. If I’d go for a Cummins it be the N14. Another awesome motor. Keep enjoying that Pete man. 🤘🏼
With my tanks, I just did a 600 grit sand and a yellow pad and brown clay. Was as shiny as anything else I did involving numerous steps.
Like your videos and subscribed a few months ago. I think when polishing you should have at the minimum a paper dust mask on as I believe the aluminum is not good to breathe nor the various abrasives in the polishing compounds. I think glasses should be worn to protect your vision and earplugs to protect your hearing.
Nice video on polishing!
Yeah... I should probably get some safety gear.... 😬
Nice job plus you play guitar too. New subscriber.
Looks good. You guys up north have too deal with the salt and sand they put on those roads in the winter time. Lots of time polishing will bring her back !
Oh yeah all this work for a couple months of clean before all the crap goes on again lol
looks great! I can't even add up the hours that goes into polishing my Pete.
I was hoping to get the whole thing done in a day, by myself, man was I wrong haha
@@callthemall dude, you'd need to be an octopus to finish that in a day🐙
Great job hello from anglesey north wales 🏴🏴
Looking good
I was doing my but somebody call the cop .the cop show up and told me no commercial on the neighborhood.nice truck brother
Yeah I’m always worried about bringing the truck home, I believe the bylaws here are no overnight parking in the driveway but I haven’t been bothered yet the 2 or 3 times I’ve brought the truck home
Had the city marshal tell me that I could park my bob tail commercial vehicle at my house. I told him it was a personal conveyance because there wasn't a trailer hooked to it & I wasn't on duty. I told him he could call the DOT & they could explain it to him! He tried to hand me a copy of the city codes/regulations but I just said no thanks, then he left & he seem to be irritated for some reason.
Fam....you got some good grass at the crib too lol.
Genius. Great respect. A mans man.
Try some covers for the front and rear of the tanks. Mind you, I have no idea on how much they cost. Good job mate. Australia.
Very nice
I use California purple Polish works good on your tanks wheels trim pieces just have to stay on it when it gets dirty
Some polish rims in driveway and some polish trucks in driveway
She turned out really nice.......
Hi there I've been watching your video on polishing your aluminium If I could make a suggestion try California custom two part Polish has a 1st step to remove the oxidiseation from the aluminium then a Polish i have used it for a long period of time on my aluminium even on my diamond trade lockers makes them easy to Polish I will send you the link from Amazon take care God-bless you and yours in these difficult times🙋♂️🇬🇧
Looks great!!!
You have to use a "Rake" on those pads to clean the old polish and build up off of them..
Yep, rake was on the ground and used before applying the first clay and periodically in between
After a day of work it looks fine for just one week.
The truck looks great but I don’t think your running the grinder with the cutting wheels on it fast enough but the truck still looks good bud
I’ll have to try that next, thanks!
Once he gets the technique down then I would suggest a higher RPM grinder. You can do a lot of damage with a highspeed grinder if you don't have a good technique! Like the title states, "Learning to...". Thanks for keeping it positive!
Looks great , your starting out right, little more technique and you'll have it, I could give you a few pointers some time if you want , looks good tho
0000 super fine steel wool works best mate
Sick pink floyd noodling!
You need a grinder. Good job anyways bro! Truck on!
Don’t you just hate it when you put in all the effort and don’t get the results you expected? I spent 7.5 hours last Saturday polishing mine. The tanks turned out ok but the grill looks like I didn’t even touch it. So frustrating. I have so much to learn.
I’ve learned a bit since this, in the next week or two I’m taking another crack at it and will have video of that soon!
Looks good. I'm a log dogger here in southeast Texas. Would be an incredible waste of time. Fuel up kick the tires and roll. If you saw some of the Pete's down here you'd cry. They haul the logs though and thats all that matters pretty boy
Pretty boy? Damn, sounds like a glory hole good buddy
pretty boy? Eww, sounds like a glory hole good buddy.
I’m about 15 seconds in and knew it was gonna be good when zeppelin started playing...
You got the right buff wheels but you gotta sand longer till its non potted and absolutely smooth no need to go more than 600 grit ... also the orange is for cutting like you do but never take it cus its suppose too cut ... always take the yellow and white buffs
Yeah I figured that out about the sanding after making this video. What do you mean by “taking”?
Unless you mean raking
Yes raking
@@callthemall lol don't know why I didn't catch that
Man autocorrect is a nightmare sometimes!
Ezrider92356 has some great videos on polishing old tanks like that one. He's a truck genius. He's also got a similar Peterbilt.
Nice I’ll have to check him out!
has your wheel got speed settings put it on low settings but with spraying water on it so you dont burn paint or chrome i use to do use that when i did valeting i have valeted for 25 years also for chrome use 2000 grit wet and dry sand paper with washup liquid before buffing tanks then buff and polish
It's still a good looking truck
Sweet music of yours
Man that’s a lot of work.....I hardly have the patience to even wash my truck.....looks great tho!!!
I did my fuel tanks & exhaust stack with never dull, it's a wading material with cleaners imbedded into it, works real good for cutting in the tanks, removing the black soot & other crap off of chrome exhaust stack. Then I used Mothers aluminum polish to finish the tanks, did them 2 or 3 times by hand. They shined pretty darn good & had a nice reflection but nothing like a high speed polish.
Here is a link to the one guy I watched & picked up some pointers from. He has a few other videos about polishing tanks & what bars to use. ua-cam.com/video/XERG_nkQR3k/v-deo.html
Nothing like jumping in the deep end & trying to swim with the big fish.😉😉 I've been there, done that on many things! That tank looks pretty damn good! You'll get better each time you polish something! You know what they say, practice, practice, practice. The 2 previous paragraphs were typed during the video as I had it paused but I took out 2 big ones with my opinions & added the link. Learn from the professionals & you'll get professional results.😊😊
Spoke to ya later, come on.😎
Thanks man, I’ll have to check him out!
@@callthemall There's another video where some other guy takes a scrap yard tank, preps & polishes it to a mirror finish. Keep practicing & you'll get the same results. There's some kind of sealer that suppose to help the shine last a little longer, don't remember what it's called
brother. that's nice
Your top issues are the grits used with different applications, and you should always be traveling in thr motion of thr grinding wheels, not back dragging, it's just spreading compound.
Grits 240 / 320 / 400/ 600 and use the same system don't go from a sander to hand sanding. If you start with a palm sander, use that for the rest of the grits. If you start by hand, finish by hand. I hate to see you work so hard on those tanks for the result given
Holly shit talk about stepping out of your comfort zone great vid calltm.
Didn't you look this up on here? I'm sure there's tons of clips giving you the ins and outs of this
Get the tanks wrapped in stainless and avoid all that polishing!
How old were you when you got your truck?
Well I started trucking when I was 23, but bought my own truck at 27
Polishing is a hard gig. Best polish guy I know out there is Stephane Gauthier if u have the dough
I’ll have to check em out!
Nice Peterbilt 379 how good are the ACERT C 15 I heard a lot of bad things about them
The block is supposed to be one of the better cat blocks to build off of. The biggest kicker is the intake valve actuators, kinda like a big fancy expensive egr. You can delete them and build some serious power off of it!
always easier to polish a tank if it is mt no or next to no fuel in it
It looks good handsome 😍
looks great keep it up handsome 😊😊😊
When did you do this? I think I saw you at the On Route in Innisfil the other day and she was shhhiinneeyy.
This was a few weeks ago, got the drive tires on the drivers side done last Friday and plan on getting to the rest in one big polishing party weekend haha, if I ever get the time!
And yeah that was probably me, parked there a couple times overnight recently.👍
@@callthemall nice truck
Well I'm not gonna knock a man for trying but I guess a friend of mine wants me to put out a video on how to Polish a truck. I feel bad for this gentleman hes working way too hard it's taken away too long. It probably took me 50 trucks to learn the best ways to go about Polishing. Aluminum I consider myself probably the best polisher in the country at 1 time . I'm sure some Of you older truck driver without there remember Proshine.
How long did it take to do all the work
This was 9 hours or so, still a few more days of work!!
Better off paying the pros do it right now just keep touching it up along the way
That is definitely a weekend package. You can't skip sanding grits. If you start with 120 next should be 180, 220.320.400,600,800,1000 and then 1500 should be ok. If you skip steps then you can't get all the scratches out from the previous grit. That is why it is very important not to skip or you will see sand marks.
Looks good for tp what you did.
I'm in Kitchener.
Yeah man, turns out the polishing wheels take out everything over 400 grit, so i did the second tank off camera with 180, 220, and 400, then the wheels, and it turned out real nice! I put a couple pics at the end.
👏🖐️👍🥰
💪💪💪💪💪
I wouldn’t use any sand paper over 320 grit your just wasting your time if you do .with tanks in that condition use the red rouge with a red pad and as the pad is spinning hold tightly on to the brick and press it against the wheel and shoot it on the tank then just lay into the tank hard .You are basically sanding the scratches with the roughe trust me it works
