Glad you enjoyed our game. There are plenty of AFL videos for you to react to. The game was not made up of volleyball, American football, rugby and soccer (as we would call it). It was invented as a way to keep cricketers fit over the winter. The first game was in 1858 and it is therefore one of the oldest codes in the world. The reason the ground (we would never say pitch) is so big is that it is a cricket ground. The three scores are goals (worth 6 points), behinds (worth 1 point) and total score. So 20 10 130 means 20 goals (20 x 6) + 10 Behinds = 130 points total. I have no idea why they say the grand final has an attendance of 90,000. It is always 100,000 except for 2020, when they had to play the grand final in Brisbane because of COVID.

It’s virtually the oldest game on earth. The reason being that a good portion of it stems from an Aboriginal game called Marngrook. And that is probably over SEVERAL THOUSAND years old, and possibly even tens of thousands of years old, since they’ve been here in Oz for over 60,000 years plus.

You're right. The field is enormous! Most players average 10-12 miles per game. They're lean, muscled, running machines.

I just wanted to point out that hand passing is not anything like what's done in volleyball.
Can confirm, I play volleyball and we do not do that
The difference is that the non punching hand must hold the ball. You can't throw then punch it like an under-hand volleyball serve. The ball sits on, or is held by, your hand and punched from it with the other fist (it must be a fist, usually where your thumb and index finger meet). Throwing including scooping is illegal.
Agreed, I've never seen a volleyballer execute a 40 meter handball.
Yep the Grand Final day is the biggest day in sport in the Australian calendar year. In fact the state of Victoria has a public holiday on the Friday of that week. Called "Friday before the AFL Grand Final"

I went to the 2017 preliminary final (game to get into the grand final) and there were about 96k people and about 92k were supporting my team, it was a crazy environment that'll never get replicated ever again anywhere in the world
While it wasn't known globally until recently, there is now a US AFL competition with 50 men's teams and 27 women's teams.
AFL is the men's professional league and governing body of the sport, like the EPL. The sport itself is called footy, football, Aussie Rules football. Also have a great history of having Irish men and women playing due to Gaelic football having similar skills.
Footy isn't just limited to Australia. There are a lot of international competitions, especially for those that have a lot of ex-pat Aussies. in the UK, you have the BAFL (British AFL), the Dutch AFL in the Netherlands, the CAFL in Canada, and the USAFL in the US, AFL South Africa, JAFL (Japan), and many others. It's a lot more popular than everyone knows.. and why not? It's the best sport in the world.
Australian Rules is the OLDEST coded sport in the world. Based on the Australian Indigenous game Marn Grook, it was developed to keep cricket players fit in the off season.
Aussie rules footy was first played in 1858 I think other sports got rules from us.

Fair dues.... Rugby was codified earlier than Aussie Rules ... but Aussie Rules, in part, drew from an Australian First Nations game (Marngrook) as well as many other extant "football like" games. Marngrook means "Game" or "Ball" in the Woiwurung language , is played with a possum skin ball and incorporates many skills instantly recognisable in Aussie Rules. It is believed to have existed in Oz before white invasion.
The atmosphere is absolutely amazing
AFL started in 1858 (as a way of keeping cricketers fit, it is also why they play on an oval ground ). It also was the first football sport to be codified. Which also means that many sports took ideas from AFL not the other way around.
AFL players are the fittest of all codes as they run 14+KM per game (some soccer players also run around that distance but are not subject to anywhere near the physicality of AFL).
Our Season has just started so to get a better idea of AFL, watch a complete live game or replay. it will make things clearer, rather than watching highlights, which don't show things in any context.
Who should you support? As much as I like people to support my team, Collingwood Magpies (Black & White), realistically its probably going to be based in which side you support in the EPL and what colours you like. so take your time in deciding.
Also watch "AFL 50 Greatest Marks" and highlights of some of the greats, Jeremy Howe, Nic Natainui, Dusty Martin, Cyril Rioli, Liam "Flying" Ryan, Lance "Buddy" Franklin. These are not necessarily the best, but have great highlight reels.

Which sports exactly took ideas from AFL? Especially since virtually no one outside of Australia wouldve even been aware of the sport before the internet. Youre talking out of your ass.

@@chiefchimp4377 Apologies, my comment was badly worded and was merely meant to show that, as AFL was started and had the laws codified in 1858, we took very little from other sports The one sport that they did take some ideas from was an ancient Aboriginal game called Marngrook. Even GOT said at the end that it looks like AFL had its roots in other sports.
My comments would normally been aimed at American reviewers, who constantly say it is a combination of sports, mainly NBA & NFL. I have heard that AFL took the jump start from Basketball, but as Basketball was not invented until 1891 it was more likely that they took it from AFL.
Fun fact, I believe the 3rd highest stadium roar (dB Volume) recorded was AFL between Richmond and Greater Western Sydney.
West Coast Eagles since they joined the league (1987) they have played more finals matches (54)than any other team.They've been in 7 Grand Finals winning 4 of those ,25 out of 34 seasons they made it to the finals.

Hawthorn holds the distinction of being the only VFL/AFL team to win Premiership Flags in consecutive decades: 60s (1), 70s (3), 80s (4), 90s (1), 00s (1), 10s (3). Gotta love that consistency.

NFL is the highest average by a long way, i think it's like 60k+, then i'm pretty sure it's the German football league, then the EPL is 3rd and then the AFL. For a few seasons the AFL actually averaged more weekly crowds than the EPL, but they're back down to 4th now. AFL does have the highest single day attendance for a championship type game and that's the AFL Grand Final with 100k+ every year.
Yeah, should be noted that these numbers are straight up number of people attending games, not per capita numbers (% of population that attends).
"Bounce it every 16 yards"... means you can't run more than 15 metres without bouncing. You don't have to bounce at 16 yards, just within that distance.

The AFL Grand Final has an estimated world wide TV viewership of about 30 million people extra to the crowd at the MCG. Even the US has USAFL now. It's out there! And talking about experiencing that crowd... Liverpool FC got treated to that massive crowd of about 95K singing their anthem back in 2013. Spectacular!

Crowds. Highest average NFL, Bundgesliga, EPL then AFL. When you consider that we only have 25m people. Then also have FOUR major football sports. AFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union and soccer.
It's up to 10 additional minutes per quarter , not per game , so the game can realistically go for 20+10 (30) X 4 = 2 hrs of game time
If you like to pick a side then look up history about each club and watch some games from each club & go from there.
I can say go for my team but doesn't matter what team i go for, you got to pick a side yourself.

Aussie Rules is played on a Cricket oval. We currently have women's teams evolving their own league. Aussie Rules competitions are starting up around the world, some small and some bigger; Canada has it's own competition, even the United States is developing competitions. It is also played by Aussie expats in the UK.

Goals (worth 6 pts) + 'Behinds' (worth 1 pt) = Total
E.g. 20 (goals x 6 pts = 120) + 10 (behinds) = 130
A couple of good vids you might consider is the offical highlights from a couple of Grand Finals. One is 2017. Although it was a bit of a blow out, the crowd goes off - it's a good vid for getting that atmosphere. The other is the 2018 Grand Final. It was a classic nail-biter close game that went down to the wire.
I never understood why the AFL didnt explain that scoreline in this video.

@@chiefchimp4377 there’s a lot about this video that causes confusion to anyone unfamiliar with Aussie Rules.
Somethings they missed, a mark is a ball that has been kicked and traveled at least 15m and has not been touched by an other player and has been caught( you don't have to jump on back of player every time) It's 360 game, ball can be kicked, punched and handballed in any direction. If ball has been touched by a player while going through the goals it then be comes a point and if they kick the ball and it hits the small posts it's called out on the full no points and a free kick to the other team. Holding the ball means you have had prior opportunity to kick or handball and you have been tackled usually 3 seconds. It's a very fast game and the rules have changed over the years to make sure it stays fast, It was to keep the cricket players fit in winter but they got the basic game from watching the Aborigine's playing his game so it is one of the oldest games in the world.
The rules of Aussie Rules Footy are pretty easy to pick up but are best explained during live match! As the 2 methods of passing the footy between players, Kicking & handballing. Basically, every time a player catches the footy which has been kicked, it is called a MARK, regardless of whether the play catches at ground level or upon the backs & shoulders of teammates or opposition players. If a player marks the footy on top of others, it is referred to as a Specky, which is short for Spectacular Mark!! once the ball is Marked, the player who took it gets a chance to move it on a bit like a Free-Kick until the umpire calls "Play On." Those kicking for a goal get allowed a bit time than down the field! As for the handball passing, unlike Volleyball, you MUST punch the ball off of palm with your opposite hand. Think of like you're catching your fist just after passing the footy to a teammate! The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has a capacity of 100,024 which always gets packed out during the AFL Grand Final which September but there is a reduce capacity under the COVID19 Restrictions. The Richmond Tiger FC are the current Premiers (which is what we call the winning champions at Full-time on Grand Final). They're the team I barrack (Aussie for support) for and we have won 3 of the last 4 Grand Finals. Choose wisely who you're going to barrack for, but do your research by watching highlights of some of the greatest players which are on UA-cam! To learn more about the game, I suggest getting in touch with clubs who play across the UK. Google AFL England or AFL Britain to fined your closest club when you're allowed to meet up with others, then ask them about the International Cup...........

I’m a Melbourne Demons supporter. Melbourne is the oldest club in the competition, formed in 1858 (turning 163 in July). Tom Wills was a committee member for Melbourne Cricket Club, he devised the first ten rules of the game as a way of keeping cricketers fit in the winter months, and then the Cricket Club formed the Melbourne Football Club.
Also worth mentioning that it was likely inspired by an indigenous game called "Marngrook". There's not a lot of evidence to back this up but Tom Willis grew up near Moyston where he would socialise with the indigenous kids there. Marngrook was a popular game in that region but we can only assume.

I’m a Richmond supporter, we waited 37 years for a Premiership. We then won another 2 in 3 years.
This year Melbourne won the Premiership after 55 something years.
Yes we put 90,000 in for our domestic sport, but this is Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
We have the Grand Final, a Grand Slam, a Formula One race, the Melbourne Cup horse race, Bells Beach International Surf Competition….

The field size might make more sense when you realise that they use cricket grounds, cover up the pitch and plant the posts at each end. So the grand final is usually played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
It was originally developed as something for Cricket players to do in the off season.
While AFL and volleyball both have a hand-punch, the big difference is volleyball doesn't hand-punch at a flat-out run with a dozen guys running at you, all trying to get the ball off you.
to be fair that is only the infield for baseball,when you take the entire field it's many times that size.
No my friend we did not draw from the sports you mentioned, because ours came first. It was invented in 1854. There is an obvious reason why it is not worldwide, and that’s because Australia is an island. Soccer for example, easily spread itself around through conjoined countries in Europe. It still has manage to spring up in various places in the world including where you are, however it is amateur as opposed to professional, and therefore the skill level is way below our Australian players. I think it’s called Europe AFL or AFL Europe etc, and there will be broadcasts, because I know a lot of expat Australians watch it over there. America has USAFL, which has 40 different leagues, including a women’s league.
The scoreline of 20 - 10 - 130, Means 20 goals X 6 points each, which is 120 points, plus the 10 behinds, (points) equals a total of 130 points. Knowing what my Aussie supporter friends are like, I suggest you don’t keep making references to rugby. That game draws 10,000 to 20,000 people to the match of the day, whereas our match of the day, pulls 50 or 60,000, and 70 to 90,000 can be the attendance at some of our more important regular season games. The 90,000 for the grand final is more like 100,000. We don’t have trouble making idiots like some sports overseas, and that 100,000 people is more like one big happy family. Parent to take their kids to our games.

5:45 the 20 and 18 represent the number of goals and the 10 and 12 are the behinds scored and the 130 and 120 is is the points combined from goals and behinds
Once you understand the scoring it is easy to follow. When looking at the score, it is made up of goals(worth 6pts each) and behinds(worth 1pt each). So a final score is 20 goals(= 120 pts) and 10 behinds(= 10 pts), this gives you the total of 130 pts.
The 3 scores show the goals the team scored first then the behinds second then the total of those points so basicly the score.
And to let you know 4 interchange players and time added each quarter so I typical game would go around 2 hours playing time Grand Final played at the M.C.G You know it as the Melbourne Cricket Ground where the Boxing Day Test is played and they normally get between 95 to 100 thousand people at the ground
The toughest part I found with playing the game is learning to kick with both your left and right foot.

Check out Gaelic Football, they are very similar games, except that the Irish use a soccer ball and you can score in that way as well.
As it’s played on a cricket ground during the off season, countries that already play cricket have the infrastructure necessary to play AFL. the games are broadcast around the world, and there is an AFL game played each year after the finals have finished. Volleyball is different they punch the ball from underneath, in AF L they punch from behind the ball.

As a Pom, you'd have to be drawn to the Western Bulldogs, wearing Red White and Blue and with a bulldog as its mascot. I was surprised that you didn't appear to pick up the MCG from cricket. The sport's origins had to do with keeping crickets fit during winter, the games are overwhelmingly played on grounds that are used for cricket in the Summer. I've watched a good number of reaction videos of that American film clip, including a couple from 2 blokes in Scotland, yours has been the best yet, you spot issues instead of just the wows at the bumps and ood screamers. No.1 NFL
No.2 Bundesliga

So for a country with only 25mil citizens we keep our own with the big Leagues .
The score board reads - Goals , Behinds then total so it was 20 goals 10 behinds for a total of 130
The ovals have no set size but it dose have a minimum required size but it's generally if you can play cricket there you can play AFL.
For a more Authentic Australian explanation of the sizes of the players look at Eric Bana explains AFL , it's from a movie with Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen it's good for a laugh but fair warning Eric drops the F bomb about 10 to 15 times in about a minute 😂😂😂

It is on Sky, remember the time differences and look from dawn to late mornings.
The score of 20 10 130 is 20 goals of 6 points each (120) plus 10 points equals a total score of 130. In AFL, it's called ground not a pitch.
The Grand Final attracts over 100000. The 1st round of finals starts this weekend. Top teams are Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Geelong and Brisbane Lions. They all have the double chance. That is they can lose 1 game and still continue to play on in the major round (Finals). The side that finish 5th to 8th play elimination finals. Each side must win 3 games in a row to get to the Grand Final.
Side to support. Not a Victorian team. Port Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney or West Coast (just missed the finals,finished 9th).

Australian Rules was codified and first played in 1858 and in doing so pre-dates soccer, both rugby codes by nearly 20 and 30 years, Gaelic Football, American football, baseball and basketball and as such our game bears no resemblance to those games and rather if anything they mimic ours. The AFL is the premier Aussie Rules competition in the land and is the official name of the game as opposed to AFL. At a rough guess there would be upwards of another couple of hundred leagues spread out across the states of Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and a few scattered leagues in the rugby states of Queensland and New South Wales and you will also find domestic competitions in Ireland England, all over Europe, Canada, the USA and in the South Pacific. You have different heights with players some are over 6' foot tall , but others are only 5' 5 tall .
I believe a couple years ago when I was in England they had a couple games on sky sports but I’m not 100% sure
AFL was created in the 1800s which is before NFL (1920) and volleyball (1964) so maybe they got inspired by the different aspects of the game

To explain that score you couldn’t understand is quite simple. Here goes: ( I’ll use an easy example )
Let’s assume a team kicks 10 goals with each goal being 6 points.
They also kick say 5 behinds with each behind being 1 point.
So the total is 10 goals. = 60 points
5 behinds. = 5 points
Therefore total =. 65 points. It is displayed as : 60 5 65
Or if it was 12 goals 8 behinds it would be displayed as : 72 8 80
Hope this makes sense. & the only team to follow is Melbourne Football Club, known as the “ Demons “

Aussie Football was third in 2010 before the introduction of the 2 new teams in Rugby territory but yes NFL by a mile, no other sport will catch them, their average would be much higher if they had larger capacity stadiums.

I've never watch AFL in UK but I've seen it on Eurosport in Easter Europe.
From what I know, you can download the WatchAFL app which although it requires a paid subscription (I assure you, paying to watch this sport is worth it), gives you access to all games and even afl talk shows that are shown on Fox Footy Australia. I’m not too sure about what TV channels actually show AFL in Europe and the UK so the WatchAFL app is your best bet to catch the games. Round two kicks off Thursday 7:20PM Australian Eastern Time (around 8:20AM UK time) between old rivals Carlton and Collingwood. Hope you can watch some of this round. 👍🏼👍🏼

They show a few matches on BT Sport but not all of them. It's best to get a watchafl membership if you want on demand access for all games. It's about £130 for a year's worth but cheaper if you actually buy a year's membership from a club directly instead- plus you get free merch, a 1yr watchafl pass and the dono goes directly into the club!

AFL wrote its rules in the mid 1880s, before any other football code and has had pro leagues [ for those days ] since the late 1880s. You can get an AFL app that lets you live stream matches and gives shit loads of other info. I think it's because everywhere else doesn't play it. Here in the UK we know Australia is big into cricket and rugby as we play you every season. Also the timezone may come into play. The afl is shown between midnight and about 7am here
If you hear an Australian say football, this is what they mean. Australia is like America in that we don't call soccer football.

Ange. They're young. Some U.K. WW2 or Korea vet's might have a long time ago memory but unlikely with the younger tech gen's. Everyone who reacts to this game mainly from America and England all say it is part Rugby, basketball, volleyball etc. No! It isn’t, it was the first game of football anywhere. So they took from us. It started 10 years before America had football in the 1850’s. It was started to keep Cricket players in shape off season and it probably killed a few of them off. That is why the Grand Final is always at the Melbourne Cricket Ground except for Covid years. It is way bigger than Cricket.
It is played by elite athlete’s that can run non stop while keeping all of their skills. It is fast and fun and the game doesn’t stop for injuries unless they fall down in the line of play. It stops if they are unconscious but only to clear the field for play.
If you were a player you would be a mid fielder. That is where the shorter players excel and they run the farthest, they are fast and can get under and around the bigger players. It is not correct to say you can be any size or shape. That is only in height so the rest has to be lean and muscular. It wouldn’t work if the wore NRL pads or if they looked like OOMPA LOOMPA’s.

It's one problem with this video that they don't really explain the scoring. The score line '20 10 130' means 20 goals at 6 points each, 10 behinds at 1 point each for a total of 130 points (20*6 + 10*1 = 130).
It's always funny watching people try too compare the AFL too other sports, considering AFL is older than all of them.
A couple of things. Firstly the scoring. Most other rugby type football sports when you see the final score you can't tell what's actually happened in the game. Not so with AFL. With the score you can kinda piece together what's happened. For example: Collingwood 20 10 130 is simple. They have kicked 20 goals and 10 behinds for a total of 130 points. Since each goal is worth 6 points and a behind is 1 point. Then 20 goals x 6 points = 120 + 10 behinds x 1 point each =130 points. You can tell they kicked the ball 30 times in the goal area and scored 20 times.
The Finals. The reason it is as it is is because of entertainment. Its more exciting and here is the logic. The number 1 team gets the title called the Minor Premiership. They are unofficial winners. However, the Premier is decided in the FInals. The finals heavily favour the top teams where the bottom teams are basically on sudden death i.e. if they lose they are out. The whole idea is if you were good enough to be top place all year, then surely you can win a few more games and win the whole thing. Generally you also get a life if you are in the top 4 to account for that 1 bad day you talked about. It's the finals at the moment dude so you should check it out. There have been some epic epic games and I'm not even a AFL fan. I'm more into my rugby league but I still watch AFL as I'm in Melbourne and its blasmephy not to watch this great game when the finals are on. Very exciting esp. when you figure out what is going on. There are a lot of finer rules but generally you can watch it with a basic understanding and then a lot of other things start to make sense as you watch it. Anyway, the finals basically work like this: 1v4, 2v3 is the bracket where you can lose and still be in the competition. The lower bracket of 5v8 and 6v7 is where if you lose once you are out. Basically the winners go to a semi final and get a week off the losers of the top bracket play the winners of the bottom bracket. The winner of that round play the original winners in the semi final to decide who plays in the Grand Final. The only thing I don't like about this format is you can effectively lose the whole thing if you lose the 2nd match if you were number 1 i..e you win the first game against number 4 and then lose the semi final you are out. They used to have a better system in the olden days where the winners of top bracket would play each other and the loser would then play the winner of the lower brackets. Still, this system seems complicated but generally number 1 wins the league. Mostly.
Remember GOT, when the announcer says "he kicked a behind", it's not the team captain punishing a poorly performing player, rather it's a player putting the ball between the big & little posts and "scoring a minor".
in Australia its fourth, the NFL is first for average attendance for total attendance its the MLB by far with Japanese baseball league as 2nd.college football is far bigger than the NFL but its not counted because its amateur.

Australian Football has its roots in Rugby Union. As for space to play it, the sport is played on Cricket grounds in the winter so any country that plays Cricket more or less has an Aussie Rules ground.
It is nothing like Rugby Union. Has nothing to do with it. It's a cross between Gaelic Football and Marngrook which is an Aboriginal ball game. Invented in Melbourne in 1850s to keep cricketers fit in the winter. Nothing like rugby at all.

It pre dates all other foot and hand ball sports. The fact of the matter is that it developed so far away from the majority of the populated world, not many people have heard of it despite being officially codified in 1850s, before Soccer! How they link it to Rugby is a mystery as the Australian ball can be punched forward, back or sideways, in contrast to the Rugby ball being passed backwards only. The bouncing of the ball whilst running with it, must occur within 15 metres of an unimpeded run holding the ball. This video was actually done for the US market which is why they say 16 yards!!

Covid May have helped because at one stage I may have been the only professional sport playing in 2020 or close to it.
The problem with other countries participating is that there would be so few fields big enough to hold a game in most countries They have dabbled with smaller team sizes to accommodate that but it’s difficult for the purists to enjoy.
