The USA started playing Australian football in 1996 when the USAFL was formed in Wisconsin and now there are numerous leagues played by both men and women in most states.

Players don't go through a college system but there is a national draft. Players start pro at 18 and can play way into their late 30s. 22 games a season plus finals. A lot of injuries occur mainly hamstrings and concussion. One thing the video didn't mention is that there is extra time added to every quarter for stoppages. A quarter can go for 30+ minutes.
Bouncing the ball is measured mainly by steps. 15 steps is roughly 15 meters.
When you kick a ball and a mark is taken the ball must travel more than 15 meters for it to count. If not it is play on. If the ball is touched by any other person before the mark it is play on.
Maybe watch the 50 greatest marks of all time. These guys get some Serious air

A while ago there was a tv show which tried to find which code of football had the fittest, strongest, etc, players. Aussie Rules players were easiest the most aerobically fit. Soccer was second.

They don't have to bounce it every 25 meters. They just can't run with it longer than 15m without bouncing it. The bouncing rule is simply to stop the fastest player on the pitch using his speed to evade the opposition and score. Having to bounce it "within" 15 meters counters this by slowing the player with the ball down.

bouncing the ball every 15 metres stops the game becoming just a footrace giving the opposition a chance to tackle, when you grow up playing the game (5yrs on) the bounce becomes second nature (according to my fella). The "MARK" comes from the days players would "mark" the ground with their boot at the spot they caught the ball, then they could take a run up to that mark to give their kick more power.

  • @tmtomh6387
    @tmtomh6387 Рік тому

4:10 is incorrect - a mark is awarded to the player who catches a kick of at least 15 metres regardless of the team who kicked the ball, not just if it is caught by the kicker's teammate.

A player does not have to bounce the ball every fifteen metres, a player is not permitted to run further than fifteen metres without bouncing the ball.Effectively, a player can bounce the ball every ten metres

  • @benjaminrowley
    @benjaminrowley Рік тому

Something that didn’t get explained is that u can also tap the ball on the ground like rugby that counts as a bounce as bouncing it is definitely more harder to do and takes time and perfection to master

NFL actual game time is about 11 mins compared to AFL, which can get up to 120 mins. Players can run up to 15km.

Guys... if you wanta get into rugby... there is actually a new rugby pro league here in the states called Major League Rugby (why are all our leagues always Major something LOL ) but yeah... the games were (season is over at moment) televised on cable/streaming (dont remember the sports channel at moment). Also... I realize rugby is a bit confusing... so might I suggest starting with what is called rugby league as opposed to rugby union. Most rugby leagues around the world are rugby union style play (including our new Major League Rugby) where as rugby league style isn't as popular but is what is played in Australia's National Rugby League (NRL for short) and those games are televised also on cable here. I suggest rugby league because they have downs similar to our American Football so it doesn't seem as chaotic.

Bouncing the ball and hand passes are ways of keeping the game continually flowing. I am going to explain a couple of others rules for you (I hope I get this right) so that you won’t be confused if you do watch a game.
If the ball is held up and not making any progress, for example, a pack/number of players milling around or they end up covering the ball due to a tackle, the game stops and the umpire does a ball up (bounce) again to get it back into a free flowing game.
Whenever the ball bounces out of play (over the boundary line), you will see the umpire do a reverse “throw in” from the boundary line, backwards over his head whilst he is facing the spectators to get the ball back into play .
If a player kicks the ball “out of bounds on the full” that is considered a foul and the opposition team gets a free kick in from that point on the boundary line.
You will hear the crowd screaming “ball” whenever they perceive that an opposition player has dropped the ball instead of hand passing it/ disposing of the ball … no dropping the ball is another rule.
Also, a player who has made no attempt to dispose of/pass the ball before getting tackled, can be deemed “holding the ball” and that is also a free kick to the other side.
FOULS: Pushing in the back, tripping, kicking in danger (kicking at the ball when an opponents head could be contacted), tackling a player above the shoulders “around the neck” … very controversial this season because some players have been deemed “ducking” (lowering themselves closer to the turf) after getting control of the ball which meant that the tackling player was called for “high tackling/around the neck” when it had been inadvertently caused by the player in possession of the ball dropping lower when being tackled.
Loads more to explain, but others may have already filled you in and this “screed” is getting over long. I hope you keep watching and enjoying our game.

@ReignReacts about the Football (Footy) Codes all of Australian Rules Football, Rugby League Football, Rugby Union Football & finally Soccer (Football), which are,
For those who DISLIKE &/or HATE any Football (Footy) Code/s with a real passion would &/or will say these,
(1 One) Australian Rules Football, is referred as Aerial Ping Pong Football,
(2 Two) Rugby League Football, is referred as Thugby League Football,
(3 Three) Rugby Union Football, is referred as Thugby Union, &/or Rugby Yawnnion,
(4 Four) Football (Soccer), is referred as Wog Ball and also both Fairies &/or Queenies Game.
    (NOTE) Aerial Ping-Pong
A jocular (and frequently derisive) name for Australian Rules Football (or Aussie Rules as it is popularly called). The term derives from the fact that the play in this game is characterised by frequent exchanges of long and high kicks.
The term is used largely by people from States both of Queensland & New South Wales in which Rugby League Football and NOT Aussie Rules (Footy) Football as &/or is the major football code. This interstate and code rivalry is often found in evidence for the term, including the early evidence from the 1940s.
1947 West Australian (Perth) 22 April: In 1941 he enlisted in the A.I.F. and joined a unit which fostered rugby football. Renfrey did not join in the &oq;mud bath&cq; and did not play 'aerial ping-pong', as the rugby exponents in the army termed the Australian game, until 1946.
1973 J. Dunn, How to Play Football: Sydneysiders like to call Australian Rules 'Aerial Ping-Pong'.
But on the other hand, for those and including myself who actually do LIKE &/or LOVE any Football (Footy) Code/s with a real passion would &/or will say these, which are,
(1 One) Australian Rules Football, is referred as the real Australian Football (Footy) Code of Australia,
(2 Two) Rugby League Football, is referred as the Greatest Game of All,
(3 Three) Rugby Union Football, is referred the Game that they do Play in Heaven,
(4 Four) Football (Soccer), is referred as the Beautiful Game & the World Game & also the Real Football Code of course.

With the bouncing a better way to put it is you have 15 metres to do something with it. You don’t have to bounce it every 15 metres, when you get the ball you decide am I going to pass or do I have time and space to run and you get into a rhythm of bouncing it every couple of steps. It only comes into play if you don’t see a defender and they sneak up on you

Many of your own countrymen have managed to find TV channels broadcasting live AFL matches. Obviously a time difference, but if you look hard enough you’ll find the games to watch.
You can even play the game yourself over there. The “USAFL” comprises 40 different leagues including a women’s league. Because it’s amateur, it’s nowhere near as brutal as our game, and it’s quite a social event with barbecues and beers afterwards.

An AFL ball is made from a smooth leather though both AFL and NFL balls are roughly the same size an AFL ball is is rounder on the ends and fatter through the middle making it much harder to catch one handed and AFL players do not wear gloves unless it is for protection of an injury

We told you to search for, “What is AFL,” That’s a learning video put out by the AFL and is a much better explanation.
That guy said you have to bounce the ball on the border of 15 m. WRONG. You must bounce the ball any time “ before” running 15 m, and most players will bounce the ball well before the 15 m so that they don’t go over it which results in a free kick to the other team.

This game is fast and fun. Played only by elite athlete’s that can run up to 90 minutes a game while still using all of their skills. They average 20 kilometre’s a game just running. Please watch What Is AFL.
