Starts in March and goes until about September there’s about 23 games in a season and it’s usually played every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Around 5.30 pm eastern time. This was good to watch.
Pre-season games start in March - those are just warm ups and dont count for season points but there is a pre-season cup. Season ends on last Saturday of September - that saturday is sacrosanct but that timetable has been a little jumbled recently because of Covid.

I'm an Aussie in Melbourne and unfortunately the past 2 years the AFL grand final was played in 2 different states. We had 267 days in lockdown, 6 separate lockdowns, was awful but we got thru.
In Perth WA we don’t have it bad as places like Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney, some games were restricted people, some had no people at stadiums, I’m a west coast eagles fan but look up the top 20 goals, marks and bumps.

It is the best. Both rugby codes are very entertaining, basketball, Gaelic Football, Hurling, American football and ice hockey all fantastic games. I used to enjoy soccer, however with the plague of diving and carrying on like they have been hit by a bullet I have not been able to stomach a once proud game for about 20 years.

The women’s league is happening right now (AFLW). It’s a new competition, so the skills are still a little amateurish, but it’s great to see their development in recent years. The men’s league (AFL) starts in mid-March. Finals are played in September.
We're managing okay with covid. For regular games we had periods of playing without any crowds, but for the grand finals the last two years we just moved it to cities with low covid cases so it could run with crowds. Almost all the teams are from the State Victoria, since that's where the game originated, so that's where the grand final is usually held. Unfortunately Victoria has one of the highest population densities so covid is easier to spread than in some of the other states.
The AFL Grand Final is usually Held at the MCG ( Melbourne Cricket Ground)…. But Melbourne had major lockdowns in 2020 and 2021…. 2020 Grand Final was held in Brisbane…. 2021 Grand Final was in Perth……. Winners of the Last few Grand Finals…. From 2017… Richmond, 2018 West Coast, 2019 Richmond, 2020 Richmond…2021 Melbourne.

Good react boys. I am biased, I grew up playing footy - but it's cool to see others watch it for the first time. Knowing when to bounce the ball is just an experience skill - when kids are young they overrun or underrun before bouncing all the time. The penalty is a free kick to the opposition, and it sucks to hand the ball to the bloke you have just beaten, so you learn pretty quick.

The game continued during COVID, with a reduced length of time for a match, reduced rounds and reduced crowd numbers. But it's getting back to normal slowly. So hopefully crowd numbers will be much higher this season and the action will be back to normal. One thing that people from overseas miss about this game is that most times, the game will ebb and flow and so often it is not until the final quarter, and even the final couple of minutes that you know who might win the game. Watching it is so often a roller coaster of excitement and stress, it really is a fantastic game to watch.

i know you guys posted this video ages ago - but one thing a lot of people bring up when reacting is how do they know when to bounce the ball? the actual distance is 15 meters (but converted to 16 yards for americans to understand). a meter is slightly larger than a yard .. so the players and referees usually judge it by roughly 15 steps..
It's basically a cold weather game. When a team was made in Brisbane, they had to provide ice vests so players would not get heat stroke. (Go the Lions! )
Look up the USAFL. It's a very popular sport in the USA. The field is not 120 yards in length it's actually 180 metres long. We use a metric measurement.

The state of Victoria had a lot of covid spread and is also the home state of AFL so sees a lot of games, many games were played without crowds.Then they picked up the competition and moved it to other states where there could be crowds. For the last 2 years the grand final was held in other states, WA last year, QLD tafe year before.

Glad you enjoyed our game. A few clarifications: The ground is much larger than 120 yards long. There is not a standard size, but most grounds are around 180 m (197 yards) long. Although it looks like the game was developed by taking aspects of basketball, rugby, soccer, American football, handball etc, it is older than all of these. The first game was played in Melbourne in 1858 and the rules were codified in 1859. I don't know why they say that the attendance at the Grand Final is 90,000+; it is actually 100,000 (the record attendance was at the 1970 Grand Final, at a time when they could pack loads of spectators in standing room, when 121,696 attended. The AFLW (Aussie rules played by women) is currently in season. The men's season will begin on 16 March and the Grand Final will be 24 September. It is available to stream overseas. The last two seasons have been affected by COVID. The 2020 season was interrupted for a few weeks and the season was shortened. They had to move the games around to states that were less affected by COVID, so we have seen very little football played in Victoria in 2020 and 2021. The Grand Final was played outside of Victoria for the first time in history in 2020 (Brisbane) and in 2021 it was held in Perth. We have had severe restrictions here in Victoria, but they have been significantly lifted and the plan is to open the grounds to 100% capacity again (fingers crossed!).

You guys do have AFL competitions going in the U.S. although amateurish at best. Check out to see if there is a competition near you.

they didn't really explain that when you hand pass it to someone they are fair game to hit/tackle but, when you kick pass it and they catch it in the air they are safe from contact and can either kick a free kick at the goal or try to hand or kick pass it to someone else..
My husband and I were at the 2020 grand final. At that stage, there were very few covid restrictions during the game, and even then, they weren't really enforced.

When you say It's a mixture of other sports, it's more likely the other way around. It was codified in 1858. It's the oldest major football code in the world. Nothing whatsoever to do with any other sport. It was originally designed to keep cricket players fit during the off season, hence the size and shape of the field - they were originally cricket grounds.

As a former umpire I can tell you that it's been proven that if a player has time to bounce the ball he is typically at full running pace or very close to it. At that speed, a professional AFL player has a stride of at LEAST 1.5 metres. Umpires are directed to use their discretion but the rule of thumb since the formation of the national competition is that the umpires are to count between 8 and 12 steps depending on the estimated speed the player is running while in possession. Any more than 12 steps, including if the player changes direction, should be deemed as "holding the ball". Generally speaking, umpires will count out 12 steps to give the benefit of the doubt and to allow the flow of play to continue wherever possible.

The fields are between 135m and 185m in length .. with the preferred 'adult' player field 165m in length and 135m wide.

Reasonably sure Aussie Rules was an adaptation of Galic Football and was originally played on a field a mile long.

A jocular (and frequently derisive) name for Australian Rules Football (or Aussie Rules as it is popularly called). The term derives from the fact that the play in this game is characterised by frequent exchanges of long and high kicks.
The term is used largely by people from States both of Queensland & New South Wales in which Rugby League Football and NOT Aussie Rules (Footy) Football as &/or is the major football code. This interstate and code rivalry is often found in evidence for the term, including the early evidence from the 1940s.

(1 One) Australian Rules Football, is referred as the real Australian Football (Footy) Code of Australia,
(2 Two) Rugby League Football, is referred as the Greatest Game of All,
(3 Three) Rugby Union Football, is referred the Game that they do Play in Heaven,
(4 Four) Football (Soccer), is referred as the Beautiful Game & the World Game & also the Real Football Code of course.

they didn't really explain that when you hand pass it to someone they are fair game to hit/tackle but, when you kick pass it and they catch it in the air they are safe from contact and can either kick a free kick at the goal or try to hand or kick pass it to someone else..

My husband and I were at the 2020 grand final. At that stage, there were very few covid restrictions during the game, and even then, they weren't really enforced.

When you say It's a mixture of other sports, it's more likely the other way around. It was codified in 1858. It's the oldest major football code in the world. Nothing whatsoever to do with any other sport. It was originally designed to keep cricket players fit during the off season, hence the size and shape of the field - they were originally cricket grounds.

As a former umpire I can tell you that it's been proven that if a player has time to bounce the ball he is typically at full running pace or very close to it. At that speed, a professional AFL player has a stride of at LEAST 1.5 metres. Umpires are directed to use their discretion but the rule of thumb since the formation of the national competition is that the umpires are to count between 8 and 12 steps depending on the estimated speed the player is running while in possession. Any more than 12 steps, including if the player changes direction, should be deemed as "holding the ball". Generally speaking, umpires will count out 12 steps to give the benefit of the doubt and to allow the flow of play to continue wherever possible.
