..........only in the SCA will you find a harpischord being thrown out of a castle onto a volley of soldiers in a veiled wagon. This is why I love the SCA.
Sigh...I've been a member for over 30 years and a Laurel for nearly 12...never fought, ..I cook and feed people GOOD and Period food, dance, sing and teach others to do the same....for every one fighter there are at least 2-4 others who don't....yet the fighters get the attention....ah well...

This has some of the best battle footage caught by TV! I particularly loved the sally forth to attack the battering ram, and the harpsichord dropped on the covered seige enginge!
There are advantages and disadvantages to each method. One nice thing about SCA fighting is that with the emphasis on safety, it allows more people to participate.
Part 1: Pennsic is INCREDIBLE, no matter what the age. I'm only 16 meaning I can't do the fighting or drink, but Pennsic is the highlight of my year. I get to see people from EVERY WARE and have found a guy that I have a major crush on.
As someone who has been in the SCA for a long time, a couple comments. Yes, the SCA isn't entirely historically accurate- but that also means it is easier for new people to get started w/ out costing a fortune. You can be as accurate as you choose to be. Some major advantages and disadvantages to that. Second- the people and sense of community are what keep us coming back. The history and education and activities are wonderful, but it is the people that make it great.
*sqee of glee* FINALLY! A SCA vis that does all the explaining for me! It bugs me a little that there wasn't much more than fighting fighting fighting, but it's still REALLY good! Now if only I could show my teachers.... Hip Hip, HUZZAH! Long live the SCA! Future Heavy/Rapier fighter An Tir
Part 2: This was a good highlight, though they left out all the arts that we do, we might recreate artifacts, but it should be specified that we do this using a blow torch and our hands. (Particularly talking about glass beads and metal smithing, my favorite activities) We don't just go on eBay and buy bead, etc. that are kind of close to what we want and use them. We make what we want, and do so using the method used 600 years ago.
I've always wanted to see this one again. I'm in it. :))) About 1/3 way in, I'm the guy interviewed showing what our weapons are made from, explaining armour, etc. *grin* -THL Asbrand of Norway, Shire of Owl's Nest, Meridies
SCA uses a motto, "We're not trying to hurt our friends, we're trying to kill them." It's a blend of European martial arts and a fencing-style score system, what they mean is that they try to 'kill' the other person according to the rules and the rules exist to protect participants from serious injury. You're right, the weapons aren't strictly accurate but it allows for more people to enjoy the sport without serious risk. Check out Russian Paladin LARP if you want hardcore steel weapons or EMP.
SCA-dian child here (now 21). I just happen to know the veiled lady on horseback at 4:49, that's Jennae (sp?). She and my mom has been good friends since the early days of the SCA. It's good to see the SCA being viewed in a positive way and by Sunday Morning no doubt!
I never had the honor to go to Gulf War, only Lillies War. I've only my rising star, but I'm a proud member of Wolf Star, Ansteorra. I love the SCA, I think it funny to see a documentary on them lol! ^^
This is pretty cool. I'd love to be apart of such an event. It would be even better if most of the actors had at least some swordsmanship training. But it's still very exciting!
HEY! We aren't actors, we are genuinely bad at fighting. We do it for real, there is no script; and we have our warriors and our WEEKEND warriors. All have basic training, but only some have skill. I was a weekend warrior for years. I HOPE I helped. LOL You need to watch the crown tournies, where the most skilled fight to be king. Now THAT is some action you'd love!
When I was a Herald back in the mid 1980's, WE consulted the English College of Heralds, not the other way around. OUR Heraldic Arms and Devices CANNOT conflict with Existing English Arms.
One more year until heavy for me, I've been fighting Youth and doing archery for years. I can't wait to swing rattan and charge the lines at Pennsic... Long live the SCA! -Lord Anges Ceadchathach, Barony of Dragonship Haven, East Kingdom.
Damn, Prince Gunmar. I gotta respect that guy. He gave me a inner thigh leg shot that left a bruise the size of a football. But I would still rather fight him any day than Super Duke, Sir Patrick of Ansteorra.
The most intelligent children are the most adult. The most intelligent adults are the most childish. These people have never forgotten the value of play.
Part 3: It's also much more fun then this guy seems to think. He also forgot that fighting/archery/throwing weapons is a GREAT stress reliever. (lol) Hope that everyone looks into the SCA more! -shan
I was taught by the guy at 4:06. They most likely interviewed him because his name was real big with us, as he was an insanely great fighter with flourintine, but he's Baron or something like that now. I miss those days, but hopefully I can relieve them as son of Lochier!
Actually, I'm in this video, at about the 1:30 mark. That fight was in the Woods Battle, and it was a huge blast. I'm in the center of the shot, right in front of the guy in the white surcoat and black helmet with the greatsword. I recognized my helmet right off.
Continued, further demonstrating the validity of SCA's rattan wasters taped up to look like weapons: "A more or less informal and friendly type of tournament fight was the Behourd, which frequently used wooden or rebated swords or even ones made out of whalebone (which were sometimes given leather guards and decorated to make them appear like steel blades). These combats were mostly fought between esquires or knights in training."
"The 15th century “Book of Tournaments” refers to using “a rebated sword such as is used in a tourney” and stated that both the sword and club should not exceed the length of one arm. “It should be four fingers wide, so that it cannot pass through the eye-slot of the helm, and the two edges ought to be as thick as a finger’s thickness. And so that it will not be too heavy, it should be hollowed out in the middle and rebated in front and all in one piece from the crosspiece to the end.”
WOW! These look like so much fun. When I come of agee, I am soooo joining the local group, the shire of Thamesreach. Me and my mom are going to the revel tomorrow. Should be fun!
7:12 Damn, hammerguy really went to town on those plebs. The early Irish Celt guys were also pretty awesome. If I were to join, I would definitely be looking for those guys.
I would spend money just to experience this!! i don't know but i feel like something is calling me into the battlefield, i've had this since i was a kid the lust for battle.
@KanivalFreak Best advice I ever got was in three parts: Don't swear fealty, don't join a household and don't volunteer for any offices for your first year. See it all before you commit. Pick a name before one gets picked for you. Always remember how much fun you had on your first days in the SCA and make other people feel that way. Good luck to ya Kanival! I'll cya on the field I'm sure.
Normally large wars have a bath house. Gulf Wars is one of those wars which have bath houses which have modern showers. Toilets are of the portable type.
This SCA stuff looks pretty awesome, yeah. I, myself almost joined the SCA but I figured I'd go for the NVG(New Varangian Guard) instead. It's a smaller group, so we don't have the massive, awesome fights like the SCA does, but we use very different equipment. We use steel weapons and periodically accurate equipment, but we have to be thoroughly trained so we don't smack each other up D: Also, we let anyone train, but they've gotta be 16 - and authorised - before they can fight in public :D
Awesome stuff. Although that guy was mistaken. Rattan isn't a type of bamboo. There's no such thing as solid bamboo. Rattan is a type of cane. Very fibrous which makes dent instead of snapping or splintering. Good choice for SCA weapons.
@Butler309 Actually in the UK we do occasionally use well trained horses and riders in combat against Saxon Shield walls for the 'Battle of Hastings' show.
It isn't supposed to look specifically like a certain time and place. also, as it is open to people with any budget, some have to piece together "armor" from hockey gear and plastic barrels, so obviously it's not always completly historically acurate. There is an attempt to recreate aspects of history, though, and it is as much an educational program as it is a recreational one.
that's right I never dressed up as a greek warrior in a reenacted medieval festival, were hitting another roleplayer with a wooden stick and call it medieval full contact combat :D

I would need to contact the SCA college, but I heard it while hanging out with heralds. I can tell you the SCA does take this sort of research very seriously, mainly because they tend to be rather OCD nerds and are compelled for accuracy. Do I have specific proof of cases? No, but the veracity is high. Next event I go to ..

Went to my first event this year in Lumberton and now I'm hooked. Awesome people and had a memorable time. :)
The SCA was some of the most enjoyable times of my life...I miss them.
Oh, this old video. :) I'm in it. I'm the guy describing my rattan sword, helmet, and armour. Wow, that was a long time ago. :-D

I got this video as an assignment in my English class. And as I happen to be in the SCA in the kingdom and barony of Atenveldt, this was easy ^_^
I encountered the Kingdom here in Mississippi. 100% intend to join up as a fencer!

How about a medieval version of "The Biggest Looser". Some of you guys really need it...

It is Claubuza. We always have a blast at war and at Tourneys. Come on down and play with us someday.
