This 3D medical animation explains the normal menstrual cycle and what happens if you have endometriosis.
    Transcript:
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining in your uterus grows in other areas of your body. The uterus is the place where a baby grows during pregnancy. During a normal menstrual cycle, special chemicals, called hormones, signal the lining of your uterus to thicken. The lining, called the endometrium, builds up to prepare to receive a fertilized egg.
Meanwhile, the unfertilized egg is maturing inside one of your ovaries.
At mid-cycle, your ovary releases the mature egg. This is called ovulation. As the egg travels through your fallopian tube, it is ready to be fertilized by a reproductive cell, called a sperm, from a man.
If the egg isn't fertilized, or if it is fertilized but does not implant in the lining, the uterus sheds the lining through your vagina. This monthly bleeding is called your menstrual period.
If you have endometriosis, the lining-type tissue grows outside your uterus for reasons that aren't clear. The misplaced tissue responds to the hormones, just like it would do if it were inside your uterus. The tissue continues to thicken, then sheds and bleeds with every menstrual cycle.
However, the blood and tissue that are shed outside the uterus have no way to leave your body. The trapped endometrial flow can irritate the surrounding area, causing inflammation and pain.
Bands of scar tissue, called adhesions, may form, sticking one organ to another, or causing your fallopian tubes to close. This can affect your fertility, which is the ability to become pregnant.
Endometriosis can form fluid-filled sacs on your ovaries, called endometriomas, also known as chocolate cysts. These can also affect fertility. Endometriosis may also cause abnormal bleeding.
The most common sites for endometriosis are:
the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the outside of your uterus, the supporting structures around your uterus, and the lining of your pelvis (called the peritoneum).
    Other sites include your:
    bladder, rectum, and intestines.
If you have endometriosis, you may have one or more of these symptoms:
    chronic, usually worsening central pelvic pain; pain before or during your period; pain during sex felt deep within your pelvis;
painful urination during your period; painful bowel movements during your period; abnormal bleeding; diarrhea, constipation, or nausea; and difficulty getting pregnant, called infertility.
Your doctor may recommend treatment options from the following categories:
Pain management medications, such as aspirin, acetominaphen, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also known as NSAIDS (pronounced "en-sedz"), provide relief from pain.
Hormone therapy, such as birth control pills, can prevent monthly endometrial build up and bleeding.
You may need a surgical procedure to treat the tissue causing pain or bleeding. Examples of such procedures include:
removal or destruction of endometrial tissue; removal of adhesions and scar tissue; removal or drainage of cysts; destruction of nerve fibers that transmit pain; removal of your uterus, called a hysterectomy; or removal of your ovaries.

To understand with a simple steps:
    1.) Uterus wants a baby
    2.) Uterus doesn’t get a baby
    3.) Uterus is angry
    4.) Uterus gets revenged

I'm a med student currently studying the female reproductive system; and I have a new found respect for what women deal with. Throughout my training, I kept hearing women are twice as likely to get anemia, depression, sleep problems, hormonal imbalances (which cause other problems) etc. I'm 99% certain, it's because of menstruation and later on in life, menopause. Menses causes lower blood volume, the corpus luteum is constantly changing the hormone levels of LH and FSH. If an ova is not fertilized, nature basically says; "so you've chosen death" and proceeds to restart the cycle over again causing a painful decay of Endometrium just to rebuild it a month later. And when the ova is finally fertilized, women get a break from menstruation because of the huge increase in progesterone and estrogen; but then suffer from the pain of baring a child and giving birth having their bladder compressed on, and organs adjusted from the expanding uterus.

We switched to University of Michigan gyn where she was diagnosed with stage three endo at 30 yo. She had extensive surgery. We are trying out different treatments to arrest endo. We plan to go to one of the endo research centers in the US to have a team advise us. Start by finding a the best gyn doctor you can get to that understands endo. Know that you are not alone. I’m in the military and I can assure you that the fitness tests are not designed to stop females from having periods. I do agree that having pms pain while in training is extremely difficult. Sometimes, men are not empathetic which is a problem. Female military have been fighting for our rights . I think it has gotten better over the years, but still needs improvements. Oh... Some of the best looking girls I’ve seen are in the military. I think it’s because we have a weight standard to abide; civilian Americans are mostly overweight. I had a culture shock coming back to the United States from being stationed in Japan and being overseas in general. I’m slim and fit, but always though that’s normal weight until coming back to the United States. Everything is so freakin BIG. My brother’s ex girlfriend wanted advice how to get her waist small like mine. She thought doing a hundred sit-ups was going to help her. I told her she needs to cut out the American diet. I also think the military fitness tests keeps me in check to stay slim which is NOT rigorous enough to stop my menstrual period. The fitness tests consists of push-ups, sit-ups and a timed run. This is NOT a body building competition or gymnastics.

@Khalilah Smithh You have the same name as my mother. But anyways, we have periods because the egg that was released was not fertilized by sperm, so it dissolves. The lining that was prepared for a fertilized egg is useless, so it shed and exits through the vagina and we bleed. If we didnt have periods, the lining will just get thicker and thicker which is not good
Edit: basically, the uterus prepares for a baby, but if you haven't had sex recently or you're a virgin, the egg is not fertilized (no sperm, no baby.) So the body gets rid of the tissue it prepared to support a baby, which is our period.

I got diagnosed with endometriosis with 13. Before my diagnosis none of my doctors were taking me seriously even though I was experiencing excruciating back and stomach pains. Only after being hospitalized ( which took several hours of dicussion because they wouldn' t take me in) I got send into an emergency surgery where they found a giant cyst on my fallopian tube, which got twisted by the cyst, bleeding internally, and had to be removed as well. If the surgery would have been a day or even hours later I would have died from sepsis. Not only am I still experiencing pain whenever I have my period but I have also been taking birth control since I was 13 to regulate my hormons which fucked with my body and mental state in many ways.
The moral of the story is that if you have the premonition that something isn't right with your body or that you might even have a cyst or endometriosis please stand your ground and demand the medical treatment you deserve because if you don't it might cost you your life.

After being diagnosed with stage 4 endo, I was advised IVF. Although I conceived successfully, things got worse after my c-sec. The endometrial tissues came out into my skin under the c-sec incision and started turning into small balls that could be felt easily. It used to hurt like hell during periods so I had to get that removed. But, to my surprise, new tissues came up under the new incision. The situation is even worse than my c-sec one. I am tired of this cycle and want some relief. This disease has taken all happiness from my life. I hope we all affected have strength to deal with this.

The doctor said I was just having PMS, then they looked at my family history and every woman on my dads side has it. My sister didn’t get it but it got passed to me. I always felt guilty when I called in because her reactions were never positive or compassionate. But what can you do when you are in severe pain? Work was not an option in that kind of pain. I lost a lot of work days because of it. It's good to hear that more people are becoming aware of this disease and not looking at it as we are just nuts and it's all in our heads.

The constant stabbing on the left side of my pelvis is my new shadow, always with me. Penetration is the most unbearable thing I've ever imagined leaving zero desire for sex. My doctor was unable to remove scar tissue from certain areas because it is too embedded and she didnt want me to bleed out in surgery. The most worst pain ever. Mine was so bad I had to get a hysterectomy at 25 years old and now I'm on steroids because I was forced into menopause and a heat flashes you get are horrible as well I don't know which was worse having a endometriosis or the heat flashes and my 40th now and having heat flashes for years and all they can do is give you hormone treatment for it. I feel really bad for everyone that goes through this God bless.

I was diagnosed with grade 4 endometriosis when I was 38. 4 years later after a 3 year stint of drugs which did not have any effect, and at least one surgical procedure, the problem still existed. I decided I’d had enough. I was referred to a modern thinking ob/gyn surgeon, who removed all my reproductive organs in one fell swoop. At first I felt less than a woman and more like a piece of meat! But over the years I’ve come to realise what a big favour he did for me. I hope any woman who has this condition gets the right treatment ASAP,

It isn't ofc, we would go through all of this hell every month while still trying our best to go to school/work and face our responsibilities also add the possibility of having to carry a human for nine long months while still suffering in pain and yet what we get in return is not being able to walk outside late at night without feeling anxious that some creepy weirdos/predators might try to assault or rape us. I symptomize with all girls and women suffering from endo. I had suffered for many years of it. I tried birth control pill, that didn't work. I was missed diagnosed 3 times. I had seen many doctors and many hospital visits. Then 1 day it got really bad I went to see a female doctor and she got things moving for me. I had a laparoscopy, then I had found out it was endo I had. I ended up having a hysterectomy. When the surgeon told me what I had and she mentioned that the reason why I couldn't have kids. I was devastated of the news. Just stay strong for all the females out there.

Most women do not know that it can spread throughout the organs and to the connective tissue. The laparoscopic surgeries are not a cure. It creates scar tissue, which causes more pain.... so you have to have another surgery to remove the scar tissue.... which creates more scar tissue.... it's a never-ending cycle of pain. Best way to slow it down is to stay away from processed sugar, soda, alcohol, smoking.
      Endo loves sugar and alcohol.
Oh, and birth control doesn't work, either. It can/will make it worse.
I know what it's like to live with this painful, debilitating disease. Your wife and your daughter are in my prayers.

Damn!!! I am reading through the comment section and I am grateful that I am not alone. I suffer from acute dysmenrrhoea and after an MRI the OBGYN informed me that there is no secondary cause of the dysmenrrhoea. However, I suffer before during and after my menses. I have migraines, severe abdominal pain and lower backache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. I am incapacitated foe three days each month and that's not counting the days before my periods or after. I don't compare this pain I go through with endometreosis pain but I am at my wits end. The OBGYN tried to put me on birth control and that made me feel like I was going mad... I had mood swings from hell, hot flashes, dizziness, nausea and over bleeding so I had to stop. I take narcotics for the period discomfort but still it doesn't help. So the OBGYN put me on visanne at least I get to choose when to have my menses. I have tried exercises and yoga but it did not help. Most have different phobias: of heights, animals, insects closed spaces etc. Mine happen to be my menses. If I am on my period and I don't have medication, I suffer from full blown anxiety and panic attack... It is that bad. So I always wall with medication all the time. Whether I am on my period or not. It has become a habit. I even tried changing my diet but it never worked. I don't know what to do anymore but I'd rather take the visanne and choose to have my menses four times in a year, two times in a year or no menses at all. Visanne is not a birth control but medication used to manage endometreosis and since any hormone related medication (birth control) react severely on me, the OBGYN agreed to let me use the visanne. If anyone here can advise on way forward, I shall be eternally grateful because I have been on period pain since I was 12yrs old 😢 😥😥😥😥😫😫😫😫😫😫😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😫😫😫😫😫😥😥

In highschool the pain was so bad I remember practically crawling to the principal's office trying not to scream. We didn't have a school nurse. He sent me back to class. No one ever thought to offer me pain meds and it wasn't till I was in college that I started taking them. But if I dont take them the moment it starts and take them consistently, the pain can be so bad I can't breathe.
