The 1990's were a wild time. This massacre directly led to a ton of gun reform in Australia, and nothing like this has happened since. The next largest massacre was a vehicular attack in 2017, and it still killed fewer people than Martin Bryant did.

I have a 7yr old son with autism and ADHD and he used to bolt constantly. I couldn't even go to the bathroom without him climbing our tall upright piano and standing on top. It's exhausting, but it's not impossible to discipline him. This situation went to shit because he had *zero* discipline and was not diagnosed soon enough. What kind of moron buys an air gun for his violent child?

Don’t believe everything you read about Martin Bryant as most, if not all, stories about him follow the same theme ie to reinforce the official view. He had been assessed many times since childhood and his mother believes he had Asperger’s Syndrome, although some doubt about this seems to exist. Clearly Bryant had problems but any objective reading of the official documentation on Bryant throws up many, as yet unanswered, questions.

You've had the advantage of the last 50+ years of research that went available to his parents. That's just the first major factor that gives you a leg up here. Obv the parents were not able to cope, but the services you get today, including early intervention, were because of the drastic outcomes of children who didn't have that as an available option.

@@srahhh Probably, but I also can't help but wonder how much damage the mother did to him in early development. He was already a psychopath, but it would seem to me that the mother excessively worried about herself and her feelings, not those of her child, at least from what I have read, seen, and heard. For example, her leashing him, seemed to be possibly more about her peace and quiet, than his actual well being. That type of parenting only makes things worse.

@@no-barknoonan1335 Man, growing up I never understood people who leashed their kids, but if every leashed kid grew up to become a mass murderer they would kill more people than world war II.
I doubt she did any real damage to his psyche, the boy just wasn't right and he never got right.
      I wouldn't blame her a single bit.
When you put leashing on the scale with the trauma getting lost in a public space or being kidnapped can cause a kid, it's a far lesser evil.
I don't even know what could possibly be expected of her if since the moment the boy could walk, he'd walk right out the front door into the wilderness or traffic for crying out loud.
I suppose she could convert the house into a prison, but then we'd be sitting here and talking about how abusive and selfish that kind of behavior would have been instead.
Psychopathy can be overcome and a person can learn to at least imitate empathy if it doesn't come naturally if they're intelligent enough to do so.
It might be as hard for them as learning to unicycle would be for your average Joe, but it can be done.
When the psychopath lacks all the other necessary traits to succeed in life and they're extremely low intelligence, they can't really be helped.

Maurice definitely cared about his son, possibly even more than the mother. The only problem is Maurice was an enabler. Instead getting Martin the proper treatment he needed from health professionals. He would ignore it, he was more concerned with keeping the peace than actually fixing the problem.

from putting his surf board on top of his car
planning to make the trip back to the home where he killed david and his wife
even bringing a camera into the cafe to record his killings

This is something I've really been turning over in my head since I first heard about this case years ago. It makes me wonder if he was smart enough to do poorly on the IQ test to make people underestimate his capabilities. There's just too much detail in the planning of all of it. I've known people who were clearly around the 70 IQ mark (their problem solving/abstract and critical thinking skills as well as forethought were abysmal) and none of them could have carried all of this out and not been caught WAY earlier than this dude.

In regards to the mom and son relationship, it's so tragic that the mother would think it was great that a baby didn't need his mother. That it wasn't her job to slove this issue.
Based on my own childhood, my mother often told me I was a good baby. I never cried or get really irritation or acted up. I was a very good and polite baby. Some people thought I was developmentally slow.
However, by the time I was 6 years old I had full blown anxiety. I was so timid and afraid of situations and people. I felt so insecure and unsure of the world. I felt completely detached from my mother. She would get into fights and arguments with me about petty things and I was a six year old child.
As an adult I had so many struggles. In my opinion when you aren't seen or validated or your needs aren't met by your caretakers early on, you don't form a healthy attachment, which leads to many issues and problems.

i read a comment recently where someone said "you know it's bad when a parent treats their literal child like a selfish adult" and it helped me feel a little better and idk i hope it does you too.

It saddens me that there are many people out there who are able to have children yet are woefully ill equipped to and lack the adequate resources (physical, psychological, emotional etc) to appropriately nurture and care for a child. While it’s obvious that Martin’s mother’s response to her disturbed child i feel we need to bear in mind in that time many women were pressured to marry and have children who never truly had the desire nor felt any maternal urges. - my husbands mother was like this, a very nice person but never felt maternal and was emotionally disengaged preferring to play sport and other activities. These days she likely would have stayed child free and traveled. I had a different experience with a parent who was extremely emotionally reliant on me growing up.
I say this not to invalidate anyone’s experiences but to introducen the idea that it’s not always due to malicious or cruel intentions.

The curse of the "good baby." I was also a good baby, which I'm sure lead to much less attention from my mother. She still had a baby in diapers when I was born, since I was an oops. Luckily my grandma started doing daycare for us when I was a baby and I'm sure I got plenty of attention from her. I have never felt much of a connection to my mom. I'd never tell her because I know she did her best with three kids, a full time job, and next to no help from my dad, but I feel like my grandma raised me more than my parents.

Even though my grandmother told me one Dr told her she should put my Aunt in a “ home for people like her “ and move on with her life. I remember as a child my grandmother treated my Aunt just as she did the rest of us. She was loving but also had rules and excepted her to follow them as she did all the kids in the household. My Aunt is an absolute joy to be around. I understand Martin had serious mental and emotional issues but it seems these issues were mostly ignored. As a mother with a son with sensory issues, it is very difficult. Whilst he eventually grew out if it, when he was an infant/toddler, he didn't like to be touched by anyone but me. Anytime anyone else tried to change his nappy, give him a bath, feed him, he would fight or freeze up all his muscles becoming stiff. We worked for a long time to make him comfortable with others touching him. My son has Asperger's, which is under the autism spectrum. He also has sensory issues with foods and noise. He has trouble making relationships, problem with social cues, and appropriate conversation. However, my son has never been violent as Martin was.
When he was first starting about Martin, I thought maybe he had autism/Asperger's. After listening to this video, I think it may be a strong possibility. That doesn't excuse his actions, but I think if he had gotten the help he needed, this may not have happened. He was failed by everyone in his life. Again, that doesn't excuse what he did, but as a mother of a child with ADHD and a child with autism spectrum disorder, these types of mental health disabilities can be, not cured, but treated in a way that they can become a contributing member of society.
This is just my opinion...don't come for me.

Do you think society is better able to deal with children with these problems; or rather to help the parents to help their child? Honestly I cant judge his parents, but I would have been with my child 24/7 if I thought it would make their lives better. I also think the first psychiatrist, interviewing him at such a young age; shouldnt have given such a grim forecast of the future. Were these even child psychologists? Yo, I'm not pro-bullying but it used to be that when you were being bullied, adults would start looking into why and potentially intervene. Sometimes the other kids don't like you for a reason. I remember our class getting yelled at in 5th grade for not hanging out with this girl that would physically harm people, eat her own hair, and constantly talk about murder. We didn't bully her we just stayed away from her. She ended up getting caught trying to shoot up the school. Someone should have acknowledged her behavior years before.

In lack of a disturbed individual kids will pick on the one who fits in the least. That used to be me during my high school years in UK. I developed harsh OCD due to stress but otherwise I'm fine. They did try to find out what the hell is wrong with me through two psychologists and a psychiatrist like you're suggesting though, so they system got you beat in figuring this out. At least there... I wish they diagnosed me with OCD though, which was already becoming a problem, instead of aggressively pursuing having me pegged for some antisocial disorder and then just giving up.

@@lkorzechowski right. I was going to add that although it MAY sometimes be the case that children leave a actually disturbed individual alone or outcast them, there are JUST as many instances of people who have become millionaires, celebrities, talented, sensitive, smart, special members of society or proved themselves to be kind, good hearted wonderful parents or caregivers or any number of other helepful and well adjusted members of society. And they were picked on because they didnt have enough money, werent able to dress like the other kids, were shy and/or sensitive, didnt follow the crowd or give in to peer pressure or had a condition like the one you described that was not harmful to anyone and not make them unloveable or capable of making quality friendships and a whole host of other reasons why children can sometimes gang up like pack animals.
So while I do understand the original commentors point, i also understand and relate to yours. It may be concerning that when a child gets bullied or outcast, that we set a precedent that the kids are right. Whereas sometimes there is something likely showing up in a child that is antisocial and dangerous, i would speculate that FAR more often than not, that's not the case and only a small percentage have somehting truly wrong with them.

Dave’s Lemonade, another favorite channel, did a great job on this one but I feel like you have enough difference in your takes that it would be quite interesting. There is no attempt here to tell the complete story here, just to regurgitate the official tale and skip over the many anomalies in this case. There is no forensic evidence available in the public domain that identifies Bryant as the shooter. All the ‘evidence’ has been sealed for 75 years, ie until 2071. The shooting at the toll-booth was an extremely significant and suspicious event during the day that has been overlooked here, by the official case itself and by the main stream media. Dreading that detailed coverage you put in was mind-blowing.
I live in Australia (albeit being 6 at the time) this case, it’s coverage and pertinently fundamental laws it changed regarding guns, and of course the Alana & Madeline foundation, are something that have been such an unforgettable part of history.
That all being said, I’ve watched these documentaries and when I went to put your video on I thought “I know this story but I’ll have a listen anyway” and I am truly gobsmacked at how much I did not know.
I didn’t really know about his upbringing, nor his relationship & the estates or even about his parents and the dream of the father.
Your coverage was truly outstanding in how detailed it was and I can’t thank you enough for covering this case, especially given you knew you wanted to granted you wouldn’t make revenue from putting in this effort.
On a side note, hearing your coverage, it astounds me that yes gun laws changed but my goodness the lack of mental and also police intervention is ridiculous. In hindsight we can see how calculated, cunning and highly capable this individual was but because of a ‘low IQ’ he was dismissed as a blatantly obvious threat.
    Thanks again for this video.
