This is part of my story, but what about you? How did you first get into the world of comics? 📚

I first started reading Teen Titans in the 80s, remembering I used to run to the shop that was out of the way on my way hone after school, so that my mother at home wouldn't realise that I was 5 minutes late getting home.
I think I only realised I was addicted and using comics as a crutch for emotional escapism, when, whilst at an elite university that I spent more time at the comic shop talking to the staff about comics rather than spending more time attending lectures or getting help fron lecturers because I was finding the course really tough.
I switched uni's, got an excellent degree and career and, I'm still a comic aficionado, 40 years on.

It would be interesting to hear which omnibuses and collected editions you sold on in the after market, that gave you the biggest yield? (Tho, I'm not sure what you would show to us in the vid....an empty shelf??)
I only sell on my omnibuses after I have read them, and, I have no further attachment to them. I can never predict how much something will sell for, and, the omnibuses that gave me the greatest yield were, Fantastic Four by John Byrne, Infinity Gauntlet, The Last Stand by Stephen King, Age of Apocalypse and The Dark Tower by Stephen King.

I really appreciate you sharing your story and talking about how collecting can become an addiction. With so much great stuff coming out this summer, we need to encourage each other that it's ok to not buy everything, or anything! And there's nothing wrong with just paying for a month of Marvel unlimited and reading the issues digitally

      So true!
Honestly not here to tell people how to do the comic hobby just sharing my history a bit. This whole medium has been such a tremendous gift when I stay inside the lines which for me is being on a budget.
That has also helped me become more selective on the books I do save for. Being “ok” not buying everything is another huge lesson learned ha. Agreed the digital services are incredible

It was interesting to hear how comics helped to distract your mind when things weren't going well in your life. I definitely remember the emotional state I was in 30 or 40 years ago , both positive and negative, when I reread certain comics from my collection.

I think I have an addiction to omnibuses as well. I have around 10 omnibuses that I have bought over the past 10 years that I still haven't been able to finish off reading and they're just stacked in a closet, but, I don't have the spare time to read. And, I'm still adding to my collection, and, this unread stack.

Thanks for your story. So much of what you talked about sounded very familiar, especially the less than smart financial decisions. Im a truck driver. I stay out for about a month to two months at a time. When i go home i throw a bunch of books on the truck and switch out books the next time i get home. So i get the whole isolation of collecting thing. Its funny you mentioned Spider-man Blue for the first time. It was great its seems like anything i read by Loeb and Sale is a hit for me. I immediately picked up Hulk Gray, which i started this morning, and Daredevil Yellow.

Wow. I was so glad to come across this video!
I frequented comic shops and enjoyed comics as a kid. The beginning of this year, I went through my boxes of comics when I was a kid and it reignited my desire to buy and enjoy comics.
Shortly after getting back into comics, mostly buying collected editions, I was injured bad at work and have been out of work since. (I work for the local Sheriff’s office and can’t work until I’m back to 100%)
Being off work has been a struggle. I am a husband and father, but am unable to fulfill more duties in those roles with my injuries. So as a way to cope, I suppose, I went a little crazy with buying comics. Well I recently rounded a corner and decided to stop buying and to read everything I have, then sell anything I did not enjoy or won’t read again. As I sell books, I am paying off the credit card I used to purchase a portion of my recently accumulated collection.
I am about 7 books away from finishing reading everything. I have sold quite a few already and have another 10 or so and a lot of single issues that need to go.
It feels good to know I am not alone. I thoroughly enjoy your channel! Thank you!

    • @TheComicBookReport
      @TheComicBookReport  3 місяці тому +2

Wow man thank you so much for sharing and I’m sorry for your injuries, sincerely hope you are on the mend 🙏
Yeah it’s a tough cycle but there’s something freeing-at least to me when I don’t hold on too tightly to this stuff. Even being on budget this time around I still find myself selling books, kind of recycling old books I maybe enjoyed but didn’t love to help fund new books. Also I found myself making my collection a bit more curated-focusing on characters, creators, or formats I enjoy rather than trying to buy everything possible.
I think I’ve found the rhythm and spending habits that work for me but yeah it can be a slippery slope and I’ve seen so many people in this hobby with similar decision making that I had. Budget and selling was key for me personally. Freeing in ways I didn’t realize at the time.
I hope you’ve had similar feelings of relief pivoting some of your collecting goals.
At any rate thank you so much for watching and sharing

Loved the story and the channel. I read comics as a kid dad would get me one every once and a while from 7-11. Then middle school time a comic shop opened in my town. My first real find was X-Men #1 and all the covers. I got a pull and ordered too many. Stopped reading for some years. X- wife sold my boxes of comics and blamed someone else. Stopped all together. Then after messy divorce from that woman. I was visiting a friend and he had graphic novels all over this huge shelf. I found it fascinating. Most of all was his row of INJUSTICE graphic novels. I knew of the video game but the comics were beautiful and had batman vs superman. He had all 5 of the books and I was soooo jealous. After I got back home I looked up my local comic shop and have been hooked ever since. Yes I got all 5 INJUSTICE books and now have a pull every week and buy at least a graphic every check. I am so happy. You tube is such an awesome community to watch and listen about it too. Love this channel and comics are dope an blerd and comics explained. Love it all. And best part is if I don't have money to get something new I can jump back to my own shelf which is now sooo full of books. Proud and so happy. Like the guy in star wars says. It's a peaceful life.

Thanks for sharing your story! Always interesting to hear about why people read comics.
I started because I saw issue 7 of Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew and begged my parents to get it. That got me hooked. I read comics until Onslaught then stopped because adulting got in the way.
I got back into comics and collected editions December 2022. And once again, I have Captain Carrot to thank. I randomly though of the comic and googled if there was a graphic novel of the title. Needless to say, the results showed me all the different omnis and my eyes lit up! I now have about 100 omnis/OHCs/paperbacks.
