I always collect at a loss. Thinking my hobby is some type of investment or that “it supports itself” takes the fun out of it and undermines my true motivation.

If you're buying comics as an Investment you have to be in it long term. 😮

That's what I'm thinking...🤔 In 10 or 15 years just with inflation alone they should go back up a bit. And I think all these kids who grew up watching the MCU & DC movies will one day be hard spending adults like us now & they'll want these books in 10 or 15 maybe 20 years.

Sure, we all make mistakes when investing. To defend selling at a loss there is a value to having cash now than it all being tied up in something you don’t believe in. Personally, all these X-Men comics Im holding just because I love em. But I’ve sold other X-Men comics I care less about so I could buy something else I love more with the money. If I didn’t love holding them and every time I looked at them they reminded me of my mistakes I’d rather just sell em at a loss.

I find deals all the time. Prices that I can make 100% profit right away. I’d rather not say which character makes this easy. As far as the first appearances, those are more long term. So many copies available to buy with those, I don’t care much for them because of that

Why are you investing in comics. You buy comics to collect and enjoy not to invest. Invest in stocks. Heck I’ll give you a stock that is at about $105 in 5 years will be $300-500. It’s VRT buy it. But first do your research on it. I have a junk of money it.

Sobering. I’ve stopped investing in comics (no graded books) and buy them merely as inexpensive, non-electric entertainment and inspiration for my own cheap comics.
Sorry for the monetary losses you’re having to endure, but I do thank you for still loving and talking about this still great medium.

Sounds like you had to pay a bunch of money to learn some lessons about timing. You bought high & sold low. Plain & simple. Did you need the $$$? If you did, you shouldn't spend your money on comic books anymore. I know everybody has heard this, but I cannot tell if you are blaming yourself or the comic book collecting market in this video. Also, you seem to buy a bunch of books out of FOMO, thinking you were going to cash in and make some $$$. That Blade book is a perfect example. The MCU is dead & I would not spec on any of it. Unless you are prepared to loose your shirt, always buy what you like & what you want to keep. You will stay happy!

Mr. Goose, this is your best video yet. I appreciate the transparency and wish you well as you transition to a new phase of collecting. I enjoy digital comics, which showcase penciling, inking and coloring in a way that floppies cannot. High-quality facsimiles of grails are satisfying to collect and read with none of the heartburn that comes from a fluctuating market.

Thanks for your candor in sharing your cautionary tale. I'm 59 years old. Although I haven't begun selling (yet), I know the day is coming. No one in my family cares about my comic collection, which I think is nice (at least to me), so it's a lonely hobby for me. I don't really have time to "participate in the community" (other than postings like this one), so again...lonely when the only person who politely listens to the lore and looks at the comic is my wife. I recently purchased one of my all-time goals, a GSXM #1 CGC 9.4 OW/W yet does not have that hideous yellowish blob center to the front cover, beautiful wrap, presents great...amazingly sharp 9.4, and...well, was it worth $6,900 in the grand scheme of things? I'm dealing with some remorse. At least I didn't buy it 3 years ago...

Sticky, thank you for being genuine, sincere, and honest when admitting your losses. We’ve all made less-than perfect choices in our lives and have taken hits and losses. You wouldn’t know that judging by how people present themselves on the internet - but it is true.
People sometimes need to reminded that they aren’t perfect and that it’s okay to make a mistake and own up to it, to accept it, and to even talk about it if they choose. That’s why I appreciate you making this video.

Ouch!, sorry to hear that Sticky, losing comic money & value is no fun for anyone. When I got back into comics, I decided that the most I'd ever spend on a single comic book is $30.00, and I stick to that. If I really want the story, I'll buy a lower grade, a trade paperback, or a H/C to keep and read. It keeps the hobby fun for me.

Great and honest video! As I get older the combination of a few special issues (graded and not graded) and omnibus/tpb's I can read time and time again is getting more appealing.
The irony is that as the cost of key issues is high (for collecting and always second hand) the cost of omnibus and TPB's/graphic novels (for reading) is coming down if you don't mind buying second hand.

If you take bigger swings you have to live with bigger losses. Where I make the biggest percentage of profit is dollar bin books - buy for 1 sell for 2. Where I have seen astronomical appreciation is the stuff I bought for $50 or $100 bucks 20 years ago (Spider-Man #5 - 3.0). But the most interesting take-away from this video is that grading and selling fees made up a decent chunk of the losses on these books. Sounds like what I've always suspected - the most profitable way to sell comics is to do it in person and raw.

My question is why sell those huge keys if you not you're going to take a huge hit? If it's not out of necesity I wouldn't be selling. I've never been a fan of slabs myself and I can see if you're unloading to buy books to read ( novels etc) but selling grails, major keys for reading material ? I would just keep them. There's a good chance down the line you will regret this.Btw, thank you for pumping out multiple videos a week . I look foward to them.

From a hypothetical investment standpoint one could sell at a loss on one item to move the money into another item that has a better potential to increase in value. From an enjoyment standpoint, if you don’t enjoy what you have and would rather use the money for something you enjoy more that makes sense too.
I hear you though, it feels unnatural to sell anything at a loss. That’s why it hurts so bad. In the long run time will tell if it was the right move financially or otherwise.

Your content is superb mate. I'm currently going through my collection of 30,000 books, accumulated over 40 years. I've never sold and never speculated (got the odd extra copy of a new release at most), it was just a passion (albeit with some crazy completionism included). I've fished out the keys and will sell the rest as runs. Working through it, I believe I have unintentionally made a sizeable profit. Mainly because I accumulated a lot of silver and bronze age books over time without knowing they would increase (many in the early 2000's). I have a lot of junk that I paid $5 a book or less for that is probably worth the same now, and that is easy drowned out by the price growth in many titles. Even with the keys set aside, the remaining silver and bronze runs are worth a lot. Probably a terrible time to sell but what can ya do!

I've always wondered how on earth someone could own all the types of books you mentioned. Now I understand. most people are just losing their asses. And I mean that in the most respectful way I can say it, not as a jab. You said this was a cautionary tale. Well, I'm glad you told us your story, because I would obsess over wanting these grails.. but the truth is, most people are losing money to have them. Thier are smaller keys out there that I can track down and own for penny's on the dollar, I need to just collect what I can afford.

Everyone who thinks they're going to get rich off of comic books needs to see this video, this is much more realistic than the cherry picked wins a lot of others show off.
Yes, there are some books I've sold that I have taken a loss on, but others that I have gained on. The more expensive books I've purchased are long term buy and hold because I just like them and want to have them. Only way I'd sell is if I'm upgrading (about to do this with my silver surfer #1). This is a lot like the stock market - if you buy junk and try to flip for profit, you're going to end up losing. Those who buy quality over the long term will come out ahead.

And passing on your treasures to other people makes you feel good when you see how happy they are with their new treasures. Sounds like you are keeping the things you really like which is good and …. people who bought during the Pandemic or have been buying because of the hype for MCU films did it wrong. Those prices were never going to stay that high and the MCU is a sinking ship and prices will never go back up like that, atleast not for another decade or so from normal value increases.
But alot of the boots he showed like hulk 181 and NM 98 were books that were just pumped up by youtubers and such. That should never have gotten that way as those books were so widely produced. You can literally find them all the time at cons. Vs books like JIM 83 or Tos 39 that you dont see very often in any grade. I myself have always found it better to buy what you like and if you loose some money when you upgrade that is just part of it. But if your doing investments, then you are better off holding those books for many years till they increase in value over time.

What Grades are these books you've sold? You aren't mentioning them.
This is why I got into Original Art. I'm glad I found that facet of the hobby.

I'm currently unloading my X-Men books, X-Men 1, Hulk 181, GSX 1, etc. I have no faith in the MCU and the days of the MCU spiking value of books is long gone. These books aren't rare and aren't worth holding on to long term.

Yeah Xmen is everywhere. Collecting them is not as special for me because although the writing was very good at the time, the art is that commercialized Marvel house style from Cockrum and Byrne which doesn't appeal to me.

You can't buy comics as an investment in this market. People who bought books during the comic boom or even after it will lose money if they sell now. Why someone would buy key comics in this market and sell them relatively soon after it is beyond me. Maybe they like losing money like you? Unless you desperately need the money, don't sell your key comics!

I think anyone who has bought comics in the past few years is hurting now. I would rather see you sell your smaller keys and come up with a list of books and grades that you want to keep. I've tried keeping my collection down ~50 slabs max. It keeps things simple and easy to manage.

Why did you sell these books? You chose to sell them during an economic downturn. This is like owning Carnival Cruise stock and deciding to sell it the day after a ship disaster. Honestly if you are getting less enjoyment from your comic collection, just bag and board them up and store them out of sight out of mind in the back of a dark, cool closet for a few years. Time is on your side.

If your questioning your collection maybe stop for a period of time. Start reading a ongoing series and enjoy the read. Stop looking to get keys and read. As you do that unload ones you want.

Buying high in a seller's market and selling low in a buyer's market? I'm very surprised to hear you do this since you've been in the hobby for a number of years. Best to consult with your better half (she's an estate lawyer so she understands money) before you make your moves...😏

I'm no expert but this selling at a loss just to "move on" seems all kinds of wrong to me! Especially if its not absolutely necessary! Your business of course but I've lost everything collectible twice in my life! Once due to tornado and once due to sickness! It just sucks and I feel for you!
Scroo you stickygoose for making me feel! 😂
I'm only half kidding! Its a sore spot and I really hope you can find a solution! Good luck!

Does no one remember Beanie Babies, Pogs, or Comics in the 1990s? Yeah, this time is different, and I agree. Social media has amplified FOMO and the means to manipulate a “market” like never before. The “synthetic” demand is ridiculous. Books like the “first appearance of no one cares” soar because some one mentioned there might be a movie. Explain that. Why does a movie cameo temporarily increase the value of a book? And then there are the websites that give you FMV based on skewed data. They tend to bias their data to the high side and rarely report low $ sales. It’s a pyramid scheme. The FOMOrons are exiting and dumping books only to spend their “investment dollars” on Lego or some other hoardable. Good luck!

Couldn't agree with you more. I've been collecting for decades and avoided buying any rare books like the plague during the recent boom. I saw it as similar to the 90's bust, just different; as it is a different time and world. A bust is a bust. Social media was out of control, fuelled a lot by influencers on UA-cam handing out the Kool Aid to newbs. It was absurd how useless books and variants were being pumped and TBH the insanity was on par with the 90's in my opinion. Here we are again. It will take years for the hobby to rebuild and there will sadly be a lot of people selling at a loss. Speculators seem to infest the hobby and make it hard for long term fans. The snake oil guys on UA-cam have a lot to answer for.
