Brilliant. I've attended Andrea's classes, on counselling, and parenting, and she is an amazing teacher and mentor - one of the best. There's so much wisdom in this approach. Congrats on your TedTalk Andrea - loved watching you.
Andrea Rippon's terrific TEDx talk on parenting demonstrates how healthy, functional relationships are effective at getting long lasting behaviour change - so much better than using punishments and rewards.
I found this very meaningful and relevant Andrea, it brought a lump to my throat. I have forwarded to my daughter Milly as I think this will answer a few questions for her. Thanks MarkP (Thursday Group)
@@TheNonnymous I think a fair amount of time is taken with establishing trust again, so that children can see and believe that you are trying to work WITH them and not against them.
Very nice talk. However, I think that you should give credit where credit is due and acknowledge your source which, in this case, is Dr Thomas Gordon's Parent Effectiveness Training course.
Hi Janine. Thanks for your feedback. I'm Person Centred trained (20 years) and more recently (4yrs) became a Certified Parent and Youth Educator (PET and YET). I referenced the Person Centred Approach and acknowledged Gordon Training International on the final slide.
@@AndreaRippon Thank you very much for your reply Andrea. I appreciate that. However, I don't think that the words "Gordon Training International" in minute print at the bottom right hand corner of one slide (the power-influence diagram) is acknowledging your source. Your entire talk explains the concepts that he introduced to the world in 1962, and ever since, when he began to present P.E.T. I'm sure he would have been delighted with your TED talk and so would the rest of the P.E.T. community. The wider his insights are spread, by anyone, the better. However, i am sure you are aware that it is always important to respect the intellectual property of others and "to recognise the contribution (they) have made to the understandings we have acquired" (University of Sydney). I don't think anyone in your audience, who had never heard of P.E.T. before, would have noticed the tiny copyright mark on the one slide and would certainly not have gone away knowing they had just learned who Thomas Gordon was, or that he was the first to promulgate the ideas you explain, or that you learned them from his course called Parent Effectiveness Training. in the 40 years since I first read his book, and subsequently presented the course, I have never come across anything as wise, effective and helpful to my and others' lives than P.E.T. I feel quite distressed when the man's immense contribution to the wellbeing of the world is not made explicit by those who have benefitted from it.

Thank you Lucy. So glad you enjoyed it.
Such an important message and very thought-provoking. You really do promote Stronger Relationships Andrea and you do it so brilliantly.
Thank you Kirsty. I appreciate your feedback.

So pleased you enjoyed my talk Mark. I hope your daughter finds the answers that she is looking for.
Ah okay. This is for parents and not for classrooms of 30 kids.
It takes time. But it works with very large groups of kids. :) I know this from experience, not just wishful thinking.
