- Arturia recently published a MicroFreak synthesizer firmware update that includes a new Vocoder mode and I'm trying to find a good microphone to use with it. Now this new firmware update is free and it works with the older original version of the MicroFreak, pretty sweet. Arturia also released a new white version of the MicroFreak that comes with a gooseneck microphone so new users arelready have their vocoder action covered. Us older MicroFreak owners though, we have to find another mic option for now and it turns out that the mic input is of a TRRS type, so we might already have what we need at home.

Thanks Jakob!
Never thought that the mic could mean so much to a vocoder. I have thought that since it is not the voice that should be heard, it is enough with a rather mediocre. But your (as usual professional) video, shows that I was very wrong.
Keep up the good work (and sorry for writing in English 😀 - an internal joke).
Based on your recommendation of the Sennheiser PC3 Chat I went out and purchased and discovered it does not have a TRRS connector but instead relies on a splitter cable. Using the one I had resulted in "no mic detected". I believe the exact part number of the splitter you are using would be helpful as they are not all created equal. Now in the market for the correct splitter.
P.S. great insight on mics here, Thanks for posting
Thanks, very Helpful
Excellent
I have a V-Moda Boom Pro I use for gaming, I'm probably gonna use that if I can't get my hands on an Arturia one. Thanks for doing this for us Mr. Haq!
My pleasure!
Does it work?
Thanks Jakob 👍🏼
My pleasure! 👊🏼
Great jakob, I hope waves will put there ovox to iOS as auv3 plugin .
Ovox by waves, are definitely the best vocoder unit
This was very useful! Thanks, liked, subscribed.
Question--I've used this vocoder with my live band on some outdoor gigs. I used a gaming headset that my son was going to throw out--not sure what brand, some 3rd party I guess--and it sounded really good at home but (surprise!) it was prone to picking up a lot of other noise from the band and other background noise. I tried adjusting the gain and hiss, but that actually made it a little worse.
Rather than tweaking the settings ad nauseam, would a better mic like the sennheiser be better at filtering out background noise? I also have a Shure headset mic, but I would have to find an adapter to run XLR into 1/8" TRRS.
What do you think would be a good way to address this issue?
(BTW--this synth has turned out to be a really nice addition to my "live band" rig. I rests easily on my stage piano and produces sounds that allow me to leave my "good" synths in the studio!)
Great video, as always. I expected that you might try some Apple (TRRS, not Lightning) EarPods or similar; maybe someone else has and could comment?
U rock!
Thank you! 😊
Love a bit of vocoder👍👍🙏🙏 I've got so many iOS vocoders they're coming out my ears
😂 For me it’s never enough. I just all of them! 💛
@@JakobHaq and me jakob ❤️
this vdo is the best advice for black face microfreak user . Thank you so much!
What? This comment makes no sense to me?
Gahhhh i've tried it all, even with them same apple headphones. Am i missing an important step beyond selecting the vocoder engine? I've checked the gain setting and what not as well. Any help is appreciated!
about the pop sounds on the sennheiser headset, will some sponge filtering work?
Asus headset mic sounded the best vocoded to me. It was the most legible to my ear 👂. The sennheiser sounded muddy and muffled vocoded. And the other 2 aren’t even worth mentioning.
Thank you for that video, now I get why my Smartlav+ doesn’t bring good results with the MF vocoder. Probably it’s quality of emphasising a bit more low end frequencies when in its intended use case is not much of a quality when used with a vocoder.
I don’t have one with me right now but I wonder if Apple’s EarPods microphone would do well as if I remember well, it does sound brighter.
All of my EarPods are broken so I couldn’t test em. But, yeah they’re definitely brighter and will most likely sound pretty good.
Jakob Haq broken EarPods, if the mic is still working, are probably the best candidates for a vocoder-suited DIY gooseneck mic project ;)
Does anyone know if the mic that comes with the MicroKorg is compatible?
The Sennheiser - all day
Which iPad app makes similar sounds?
smartlab doesn't work on mine
How does the Microfreak vocoder compare to the iOS vocoder apps you reviewed, Jacob? In terms of versatility and quality? I didn’t even bother trying this one. Worth the time and effort?
Personally, my favourite is the VirSyn iVoxel one. Its been my favourite vocoder ever since I started using iOS for my music making. I’d say that most of the iOS Vocoder apps have a much more defined vocal sounds due to the increased number of bands used. The MicroFreak runs on 16-bands, so internally it’s similar to the Der Voco app. But sonically they differ a lot. If you haven’t watched that Vocoder comparison, I really recommend it. The difference in sound is very apparent in that video. ua-cam.com/video/xp6EpjIRoHg/v-deo.html
.
Once I get another synth or hardware vocoder, I’ll finally be able to do a comparison again m, but between hardware vocoders. Right now I have two, the Mininova and the MicroFreak. I’d like to have atm east one more for a video.
Jakob Haq Thank you! That’s what I thought! Will stick to the IOS vocoders for the time being, and focus on more useful engines of Microfreak. This one seems a bit kiddish anyway! Of course, I’ve watched the comparison video. I rarely miss any of your videos :)
@@JakobHaq compare jd-xi? i know it's not as great, but i found the autonote function along with midi chaining to microfreak really interesting sounding (two voices at once)
i do love a Vocoder... only using ios but matrix by virsyn does what i want, especially with some nice shimmery reverb floating through the clouds......... 😂🙏❤️💛💚
Matrix Vocoder for the low end, layered with iVoxel for the top > run through FAC Alteza 🔥🔥🔥
@@JakobHaq oooh now you got me..... 👍🏻
Arturia will be releasing the Gooseneck Microphone for sale on it's own.
I wish I had access to it when I made this video. I’ll have to get one later on.
Derek Barnsley ...although it won’t ship to the UK- or Canada I’m told. My issue is that I don’t have access to a pc, so I cannot update the firmware!
... its own.
How does the Voice Synth app compare to this?
Completely different sound and internal workings. You should really watch my Vocoder comparison video, its one of the vocoders that I’m comparing in that list. ua-cam.com/video/xp6EpjIRoHg/v-deo.html
You can use any Apple mobile device which has a headphone output and a simple passive TRRS circuit, such as the one in the link below, to provide an audio input source for your Micro Freak and the vocoder stereo output signal can be routed back to a USB audio interface for use in your DAW. For best results run your Apple mobile device being used as the audio input source on battery power rather than a charger plugged into the wall to prevent electrical noise interference. The components for the circuit can be easily housed in an Altoid tin. I’ve been using the TRRS circuit I built for over 10 years and it works great for providing a dry electric guitar signal or the output from a piezo mic to your Apple mobile devices which have headphone jacks as the variable resistance from the potentiometer in the circuit can easily eliminate any background noise before the signal even enters your mobile audio chain.

Is this an old version of microfreak?
Yes it’s the original one. The new one is white and delivers with a microphone, but that’s the only difference. They are both the same machine and so the firmware upgrades are the same for both models too.
@@JakobHaq thank you
Can't get mine to work. Oh well
Go into the settings menu and check the Mic level. Mine was set really low in the default mode, that I also thought it didn’t work at first. Worth a look.
@@JakobHaq This worked for me. Tried a standard pair of apple ear phones. They were pretty shit
The Freaks come out at night
Whodini?
😂👍🏼
Spot on P A L
No gooseneck mic- but no pc either, so cannot update the firmware. Ah well...
Yeah I wish there was an iOS option for this instead.
Jakob Haq Arturia don’t do iOS at all. Perhaps it’s something to do with being French...
