  • In this epic test I am pitting 7 Shimmer Reverb against each other, so that you can decide which “Shimmer-sound” you like the best. All of these Shimmer Reverbs are available for both iPad and iPhone and most of them supports AUv3. Drop a comment down below and tell all of us which one you would pick!
    The original video had a mistake in it so I took it down and made a new one.

    Very cool video Jakob. And i see you fixed The little error in the AUv3 spec for Shimmer AUv3. You are a true perfectionist 😎👍My personal favorite shimmer is FAC Alteza and TB Reverb. Crystalline was my go to shimmer for many years when AUv3 wasn’t around but i am glad things have progressed so much. Great stuff to choose from these days. They are all very nice sounding. I had to stop myself from bying them all. My most favorite Shimmer reverb that i own is inside the Strymon Bigsky pedal, but that is not an app 😉 Some of these apps come really close actually.

      Maybe the stratosphere cloud reverb can be a great alternative to the bigsky? 🤔

    • @EdBMetal
      @EdBMetal 3 роки тому +1

      @@oskultrecord1731 it can be a cheap alternative, but most definitely not a replacement for the Big sky and its capabilities. They are not even in the same ball park. See Stratosphere as just 1 type of reverb that is inspired by one of the many different types of reverbs inside the Big Sky, which has Room, Hall, Plate, Spring, Swell, Bloom, Cloud, Chorale, Shimmer, Magneto, Nonlinear, Reflections, with freeze function and also actually modulation.While Stratosphere only can do one trick, the Big Sky can do an entire spectrum of reverb types and has a very powerful dedicated processor to do some insane long tails. I would say Stratosphere at best can do about 5% of what a BigSky is capable of doing. I would say that Eventide Blackhole or FabFilter Pro-R are much better candidates on iOS and come closer to the quality of the BigSky sound and the long lush tails.both are much better than Stratosphere in my opinion. But also Blackhole and Pro-R don’t have the many different reverb types of tge BigSky. But on iOS they are as best as it gets at the moment. Eventide Blackhole should also be on sale right now if i am not mistaken.

    This was a very helpful, informative video. Thank you, Jakob! The one thing you didn’t talk about was MIDI Clock Sync. If I was paying proper attention, only the Eventide had MIDI Clock Sync. I usually use MIDI Clock Sync between instruments and now you’ve got me wondering how important it is with effects. It seems like having your Shimmer be in sync with the notes could be a big deal. Jakob, or anyone else, do you have some thoughts or suggestions on this? Thanks!

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  11 місяців тому

      In the case of reverbs, It does not make much sense to have sync unless you’re into rhythmical slap-back type reverbs etc. MIDI clock sync is used to lock stuff to Tempo (Bpm). It makes more sense in an effect like Delays which are way more dependant on timing.
      .
      Sync is also used for modulation stuff like LFO’s and sequencer. So if a shimmer reverb had stuff like that in it, it would make sense to add MIDI clock sync if it had a way of syncing LFO rate.
      .
      MIDI clock sync has nothing to do with note pitch or anything like that. Also the shimmer effect tunes it self after the notes you play.
      .
      If you check the explanation in the video for what a shimmer is ( 8:08 ) you can see that the first unit in a shimmer chain is a pitch module. It “pitches” (raise or lower notes) sounds that is being fed into the effect.
      .
      You can often set the pitch in semi notes too, but for a classical shimmer you pitch whatever’s going through the effect an octave up. The sound is then being delayed and or reverberated and fed back into the pitch module in a feedback loop, which continuously pitches the sound up, up, up etc. this is what creates the shimmer sound. So it’s pitch is depended on what you feed it and how it’s set up. It will just pitch the signal up or down and when it’s used as a shimmer (setting pitch to octave up or octave pitch down) it will pitch correctly and there’s no need for controlling it to make sure it stays in pitch.
      .
      The reason why Eventide has a clock sync is because it’s time domain can be synced to tempo. It it’s versatile reverb plugin and can be used for creating tempo-synced slap back effects etc. It makes sense to give it a way of syncing to MIDI clock. It syncs automatically to the host however when loaded as an AUv3 and there’s no need for midi sync.
      .
      In short, MIDI clock is just for keeping things synced to tempo and I don’t fin it necessary for reverb to have it unless their specifically made to do tempo-locked rhythmical stuff.

    What is the difference between shimmer and regular reverb and convolution reverb

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  2 роки тому +2

      > “Regular” reverb <
      There are many ways of building or programming reverbs. They’re all different, but one way to do it is to use a bunch of delays and filters for instance. One type of reverb I love is the Ratshack. It’s based of hardware unit. The BBD chip in it is actually a delay chip, but when you put a bunch of them in series - effectively lengthening the delay time - you can get a reverb effect at the end of the chain. Now a very important thing of a reverb is how the tail trails off and how some frequencies resonate etc. It’s pure audio science. To sculpt the reverb tail you can use filters to soften out or even enhance some frequencies as the tail rolls off. Ok so that’s a very rudimentary explanation of a “regular” reverb.
      > Shimmer reverb <
      First we need a reverb. Next, as shown in this video at 8:04 - a shimmer reverb works through a feedback loop with a pitch shifter in the middle of it. That’s what creates the shimmer effect. That really is the special sauce right there. Btw, I really do recommend watching this one on how to build one yourself in AUM. ua-cam.com/video/bNh8kqF5Oqo/v-deo.html
      > Convolution reverb <
      A convolution reverb uses an “IR” file to create an effect. And “IR” file or “Impulse Response” file is a very short audio file. Playing it on its own won’t sound like much though. However In an app that loads and reads IR files, you can get it to sound like a room and/or space, depending on the audio material. One can record “IR” files by sending pulses of white noise or impulse clicks in a room. You then record the sound and reflection with a mic. Now you have an “IR” file that gives you an ability to simulate that room. Btw, IR is not only used for reverbs, it’s also used for guitar amp simulation, you know like cabinets and stuff.
      I’ll make a video about it as some point.
