Great interview. Amazing story. Agent Joe Pistone must be tough as nails. It obviously takes a lot of balls just to be a regular Joe doing what you have to do coming up in organized crime, but to do it while being an undercover agent is absolutely amazing to me.
I mean, I’m sure that not everybody gets to be a “made guy”. They only make the best of the best. Well, Joe Pistone must have been the best of the best since he was about 6 months away from getting made. But he did it as an undercover agent.
Then too, look at what Sonny said about him as he was voluntarily going to the sit down where he knew he would be killed. He tells the bartender that he’s going to a sit down that he may not come back from. He calls his girlfriend and tells her that if she sees Donnie: “tell him I loved him and I’m glad it was him, he was just better than us.”
That’s not acting. That’s not a front put up by an undercover. That just proves what a great guy Pistone is and what an amazing job he did. 🙏🏻

That was a major problem with the movie them because they made it out like Joe was conflicted there was that scene where he was like no I'm not becoming like them I am them. But if this interview is accurate he truly was acting and playing a part.
Asking Joe if he reunited with Lefty really cracked me up. Joe reuniting with a guy like Lefty after what he did and knowing that he had six weeks to live and nothing to lose is like having a death wish.

when the joe pistone guy was confronted about his $5500 reward for his 6 years of life risking effort and said "look, you dont do this for money". i think this speaks a lot about why he was so successful in his role and that his mind set was in the right place. someone who was looking forward for a huge money reward probably would have quit in the middle of their 6-year undercover mission

A great interview to be honest, one of the best I've seen, Had watched it a few years back, and re-watched it a few weeks ago, and what a great context and perspective we get from here, from the iconic Pistone and the Donnie Brasco legend. Really shows how much he had to endure personally, and to get rewarded with almost to nothing, and risk with such a sacrifice. True legend.

Patrick really is a great interviewer asking the best questions everyone wants to know while also being respectful.
He was great the one thing that was so weird was all the talking about Giuliani that made no sense. He even said at the end that he would like to talk to him. The only reason anyone ever talks to Rudy is because his drunk ass owes them money and he can't pay them.

This was by far one of the most entertaining interviews you've done. The stories were great, the vibe was perfect, and I felt he was almost always honest with his answers. I'm kinda iffy on how he felt about the compensation, whether or not he ever saw someone get killed, or if he really wasn't emotionally involved. But that in itself made the interview better for me because it left me wondering. Hell of an interview, my man. 👌🏾

Wow, Patrick! What an amazing interview and you probed him well with some great questions! Joe Pistone is indeed loyal and devoted to the FBI. But not that it isn't impossible, I seem to find it hard to believe that within those 6 years of being Donnie Brosco, and only seeing his wife every 4-6 months during that time, that he didn't have a girlfriend on the side. His wife is an ace and truly deserves a medal! And, it's a shame that the FBI didn't pay Joe more money for his phenomenal loyalty and dedication.

One of the best Mafia movies ever made, and yet a lot of people haven't watched it.
Donnie Brasco and A Bronx Tale are two really underrated mobster flicks. You always hear Godfather 1 and 2 or Goodfellas, Casino etc. which are great movies, but those two gems don't get enough recognition.

They should re-do it as a Netflix series and truly milk it for everything rather than do a compressed movie version. I liked the film, but I think it could be an even better series.

Joe played a very cool hand.
I listened attentively to the interview with Joe Pistone for his role as an undercover agent, yet I did not hear at any point in time how much money the gang either shared or gave to him. I also believed that this kind of detailed interview might expose future FBI undercover agents to risk.

Just bought Joe's book can't wait to read it!! I imagine this isn't the real guy or I kinda hope he isn't? To this day I'm sure he still worries about it coming back on him. I salute Joe and his tenacity to have done this for so long. He must have been in a real pickle when his wife had a near fatal accident accident and he was supposed to be having a meeting in milwakee... I seriously can't wait to read everything, at least everything he's been allowed to talk about. What a legend!

Amazing how much psychological warfare you have to master just to be believable and not get found out. The fact that he knew he had to start punching one guy to show he is real and the fact that he still felt to step to mirra to be respected is impressive
And he went in there with the knowledge that once he’s caught he’s dead
It's called street smarts. Growing up on the streets is psychological warfare every day.
The altercation with Mirra HAD TO HAPPEN,but it took BIG BALLS because this guy is either going to treat you differently or treat you to a bullet in the head. Had Joe put it on Mirra in front of other people I guarantee he'd have been killed. This is just like playing chess, for lives with Hannibal lector..lol

You also have to realize that he was undercover at a time where different factions in the Bonanno family were plotting take control by wiping out the capos of another faction inside the same family.
It could have turned into an all out mob war inside the family.
But it ended pretty much once Sonny Black and Joe Massinos side wiped out three of the leading capos on the other side, all at once.
Joe was close to Sonny Black while this was all going on which made his work even more dangerous because that power struggle could have went the other way but luckily it didn’t.
So Out of all the agents who have went undercover in Cosa Nostra, he did it at time when the mob didn’t think twice about killing guys for certain reasons. 6 years that deep at that time in inside that particular mob family is crazy.
He’s very lucky he made it out alive.

I've never understood how Mafia don's can have massive contracts out on these guys heads, but dudes online can find them and line them up for interviews pretty easy.
there was no internet back in a day, that is why today, it is not possible.
They might be able to find them but most likely they have some kind of sercurity or something to stop that from happening. They choose to go too this interview and probably have a spot for them to meet up at.. somewhere safe. Like when Sammy the Bull recently did the Interbiew he said he scoped the place out and did all the resrarch on the interviewer before he went.
They have to take precautions. It's a dangerous way to live.
