      Something to add on the game. If you are attentive enough you notice two kinds of transitions. Fade to white, and fade to black.
      Devs revealed that if the transition is black, then it is a continuation of Walker's trials through Dubai.
      But if the transition is white, then then anything you've done before this has been a hallucination in Walker's mind.
      Heck the Lead Writer said that the starting helicopter scene was the final moments of the main characters lives and Walker is going through the past in his mind.

      Minus the fact that they can spend the entire game guilt tripping you despite never once picking a single aggressive choice, the only 'bad' choice you make being using the phosphorous on the civilians, never mind that you spent 10+ minutes holding out before being forced to use it solely to continue the game.
      And then the answer is a massive copout of "You could have just not played!" Sure devs, I'll just NOT PLAY THE GAME I PAID FOR.

    You also forgot the fact they play "The Man Who Sold the World" in the beginning. A song about a man running into his doppelganger and ultimately coming to terms with them...
    Which is why I was okay with the twist really. MGS had tons of insane implausible things happening, and the idea of two big bosses cleared up some issues with MG1 and MG2, what with you killing Big Boss in 1 yet he's still alive in 2. Plus when put in the perspective of the game being loosely tied to David Bowie's songs, it's kind of interesting.

      Holy shit THANK YOU! You actually mentioned the two Big Bosses part, so I don't see what part of this twist was really stupid. What other way was there to explain what happened in the first two games?
      Interestingly enough though, none of these were the hints I had in realizing that we weren't playing the real Boss (John). What gave it away at first... was that for some reason Ishmael sounded like Kiefer Sutherland. Knowing that he was supposed to play the Boss, I wondered why exactly that was the case. Really though, going deeper into the shoes of Venom really made me forget about that, so the reveal was still surprising to me anyway, but then I kicked myself hard for not having stuck with that initial suspicion anyway.

    • @MxChloeB42
      @MxChloeB42 8 років тому +11

      +artcellrox I think people were mad because it didn't give the real Big Boss any motivation for MG1 and 2 and didn't give him any humanizing moments, because it was a doppelganger experiencing it all. What they failed to understand is the other prequel games already did that, it was never "He's just evil and wants to rule the world" Ever since MGS3 we found out his entire motivation was being manipulated into killing his mentor, the only person who gave him reason to live, by the US and Russian governments. Everything else after that point was him miscontruing her words. The entire point of him doing what he did was to take power away from the people who used people as pawns with no regard whatsoever and to take away their Nuclear option so he could use them himself as a safeguard, to ensure no one could stop him.
      MGSV:TPP was to explain why BB survives 1 and to establish the world leading up to MG1.
      How was BB able to make Outer Heaven while working for the US government? Doppelganger.
      How did BB survive being killed in MG1? Doppelganger
      Why did no one have Nukes allowing BB to be the only one with them. The events of MGSV pushed the governments into dismantling their weapons so no one could arm any PMC or third world country, all while BB stockpiled some for his plans.
      The twist was a bit cheesy, sure, but it explained everything perfectly, sans the whole Konami screwing over Kojima so it was technically an unfinished game. And having the events of MGSV happen to Venom Snake makes perfect sense. Why would a doppelganger be willing to sacrifice his identity and willing to die for BB in MG1 even after learning the truth? Because he experienced what BB went through allowing him to empathize with him. I mean the mission, "Shining Lights Even in Death" was enough to show the torture BB had to go through. So when BB comes to Venom and says "I want to prevent anything like this ever happening again" Of course he's going to sign up.

    • @Eonymia
      @Eonymia 8 років тому +9

      I also thought of the twist being as a nod to the player from Kojima, among all the other story reasons presented. You create your character in the game. You, the player, have been there to make mgs what it is. A subtle 'thank you' to his long time fans.

    Funny thing on the Joker one: I did use the Detective Vision during the fight and my brother and I actually made note of that. Thought it was weird. But we ultimately decided to chalk it up to "well, the devs probably didn't think that you'd use your detective vision during this encounter, so they didn't waste time with it."
    Cut to the Clayface reveal and it had the both of us slackjawed as we realized why Joker didn't have bones.

  • @ZeroFighter
    @ZeroFighter 8 років тому +105

    The reason for that twist in MGSV was to solidify that Big Boss is the antagonist in Metal Gear. He does something to one of his own men that is just as bad as the stuff that Cipher does, meaning he's no more in the right than the people he's fighting against. This is exactly the kind of behavior that the Metal Gear Big Boss would do. But, because we're seeing things form his perspective from MGS3, Portable Ops, Peace Walker, and Ground Zeroes, as well as reconciling with him at the end of MGS4, we easily forget that he was the original villain when the story began. We go through all sorts of mental gymnastics, and even ignore that he literally recruited Chico when he was still too young to smoke or drink, using him as an asset for his military operation. And then of course, there's his method of recruitment; abducting enemy combatants and brainwashing them into joining his army. And that leads into his plan for Outer Heaven; Go to war, create war orphans, take the orphans back to his base, train them to go to war, and then unleash them on other places, creating more war orphans to take in and train. Long and short, Big Boss is a villain, and MGSV's ending was the final step down that path, taking someone else's life away from them, and using them to further his own agenda. The only reason people are so mad that he would do such a thing is because they've been seeing it all from his perspective for so long. If you were to come in with no knowledge of the franchise, you'd think it's kind of a dick move. Then, go play Metal Gear, and you'll see that he's the final enemy of the game, and you'd just think that it makes perfect sense. Because he IS the villain.

      You're only right poetically. The first term I used to describe Big Boss was 'antagonist' because that's exactly what he was early on in the franchise; the antagonist to Solid Snake's protagonist. Again though, Big Boss was a villain, using the suffering of others for his own gains. If you step back, he's really a monster who just believes he's doing the right thing, using all sorts of bad methods to achieve what he thinks is a good goal. He hides behind 'the ends justify the means' when they clearly don't. He creates new suffering just to perpetuate war, claiming that it's to make a paradise for soldiers, consequences be damned.
      Also, if you're wondering why I took over 9 months to reply, take it up with UA-cam who didn't notify me about anything until the fourth response. Also, while you're at it, you can ask yourself why you responded over 3 years after I left the comment.

    I remember one from The Witcher 3. It's not really a twist, but it's also pretty nice. Early on in the game, in Velen near a windmill, you can find an old man claiming he's a medium and he can predict your future. If you bring him back the herbs he asks for, he gives clues about the game ending. Same with the Heart of Stone DLC, if you haven't completed the main quest before the DLC, you can by choosing the right option at the end of the DLC get some clues on what to do when you're making the critical choices that affect the end of the game. That's freaking cool

    I, too, am very critical to the twist and overall narrative of MGSV. But it seems like you didn't understand the meaning behind it. You're not just a faceless medic. You're you, the player, that's why you create a face instead of them giving the medic a face to begin with. That's why you all big boss' important memories were imprinted in venom's brain. Because we were there with big boss, we lived through that too. In short we are venom snake, we became so familiar with big boss that we were turned into his phantom. A second big boss. I'm not saying you should like it. But at least understand what it is. I'm not very fond of it either for the record.

    • @abrahamkresnik9726
      @abrahamkresnik9726 8 років тому +1

      As much as how I like that fact that we the players get to live Big Boss's world, I wished for more story and character development for Venom Snake. At one point, we did travel back to Cyprus according to Truth Ending, but it was jumpy.

    • @MRGilD0
      @MRGilD0 8 років тому +1

      Have to agree, and also the twist can be seen a mile away. If you weren't being too presumptuous you would have probably seen it during Kaz's rescue mission. If you were being presumptuous you might have even seen it coming during the very first mission. Didn't really bother me at all and it was a sensible twist all things considered. I think it was unfair of the video to label it as nonsense simply because of the slightly convoluted setup.

    • @axelkristoff
      @axelkristoff 8 років тому

      +Sir Gildo I actually loved that twist, Big Boss' history was already too convoluted and heavy for any soul to bear, so having someone else go through that made it easier for me to believe that Bigg Boss didn't kill himself later on.

      That is the point they tried to make, but frankly, it's a load of bull crap. Big Boss is a character. His dialogue is carried out by a voice actor, motion capture gets some of his movements, and all we do is take him from point A to point B to carry out the story. I know I'm not Big Boss, because I'm real. If I'm Venom Snake, then why am I not Big Boss too? Are we every video game character ever? Ever since Psycho Mantis Kojima's tried to up his metafiction and fourth wall breaking, when all he needs to do is write a good story and stop trying to pull pointless rug pulls. Summary: Big Boss is Big Boss in the game. Outside the game, no one is Big Boss, because Big Boss isn't real.

Then in metal gear 2 it turns out big boss didn't die he only lost his eye then you burn him to death. (even though mgs4 says he lives which is kinda bullshit but whatever)

    The bioshock and Life is strange type "giveaways" are more narrative foreshadowing, than cheeky hidden messages like picking certain letters in chapter titles, when I played bioshock I was picking up on these clues (along with the tape under the prostitute's bed and the final "would you kindly" scrawled across the wall before the twist is revealed) you're supposed to pick up on stuff like that as you're playing.

    When you're in the church tower rigged to blow in the beginning, if you hang around after the timer clicks down Joker will berate you and more or less spell out the ending of the game, which further plays on the Cain and Able painting in the prologue with Catwoman :/

    I actually like the twist in MGS:PP. The medic in a sense is supposed to be you. Assuming you played the games as Big Boss/Snake those would be the "memories" that were placed in the phantoms mind. And it makes sense because in the original Metal gear games you kill Big Boss, but then he shows up in MGS4 without that horn in his head. It really makes a whole lot of sense if you ask me.

    There is a lot more foreshadowing for #4.
    If you don't jump out of the exploding chapel tower, Joker talks about how if you two keep going at it, one of you is going to end up dead on of these days.
    Also, when Joker jumps on you and knocks you out with gas, his skin is nice and cured, then goes back to infested.
    Also, as 35Antonio said:
    "In Arkham City, after Harley Quinn hides with Joker in the attic of Ace Chemicals you can hear say:
    Harley: Mr. J, you look so much better! Oh, it's not you.
    Joker: Shhhhhh, quiet Harley!"

      All true points, you forgot one though when you go back to the Steel Mill and Joker's looking in the mirror. Batman even revisits a memory of that when he confronted clayface, the reflection was of a sickly Joker but when Joker turns around he's looking cured. Because it wasn't a mirror.

      I just assumed it had been rigged by Ocelot or Miller or someone trying to hide the truth from you. Liquid felt a little awkward in the whole story, like he was just shoe horned in so you can be like "look it's Liquid!" rather than him having a meaningful role or cause to be the way he is. It really doesn't make sense for him to be so bitter and i think MGSV was a wasted opportunity for us to get more insight into him. Instead, Liquid just hates Big Boss because he's one dimensional and evil. Liquid is literally a brat before he even meets Venom and that's why the the later stuff in the series happens? Come on there had to be a better reason.

      ***** I kept thinking that Ishmael was Big Boss in a sense that he's a figment of your imagination, but he's your old survival instincts manifesting itself and essentially saving you. The twist itself fits quite nicely into the lore it's really just everything else plot wise that confuses the larger story. It was a bitter pill to swallow realizing you weren't Big Boss though eh, MGS2 was different because we start Plant knowing we aren't Snake and if you played the first one and Tanker then it was no secret who Plissken really was. The plot holes are Sahelanthopus, Liquids back story, Quiet, Ocelots apparent change of nature, Skull Face, Vocal Chord parasites. None of this was designed with the later story in mind.

    -Venom Snake still has his other eye. Big Boss was shot in the eye in MGS3, meaning it was absolutely destroyed. Venom however seems like his eye was simply damaged to the point of blindness.
    -When Volgan's spirit gets a close look at you, hoping to get his revenge, he suddenly freaks out after looking at your face long enough before fucking off and becoming a burned up corpse again. This means he realized you're not Naked Snake (Big Boss before he became Big Boss) the man who killed him, and that he truly wasn't going to get his afterlife revenge disturbed and shocked him immensely.

    Pretty sure it wasn't the Bathyspheres but the rejuvenation stations that were locked to Ryan's DNA. There's an audio log pretty early in the game (I believe in Arcadia) that talks about them basically being useless for everyone but Ryan, although it's not super accurate as anyone as close as even a distant cousin would still be recognized.
    Given that fact, I find it interesting how it changes the narrative slightly depending on difficulty, considering you don't respawn at those stations on Hard. ALSO... it begs the question of why Ryan didn't just respawn after you bludgeon him to death.
    Or did he?

      Even so, the Vita Chambers are explained as taking the user back to whichever one they were most recently linked to. So it should have still revitalized him somewhere else in Rapture.

    I really like the plot twist of Black Ops 3, where the story you play never really happened, and is perhaps an AI become self aware peicing together the memories of the antagonist in the story (whose memories the game revolves around) to make them make sense. The one you play as (named as "Player 1"), since the end of the first mission, but the AI needs an identity, and it is this identity that it catches. An amazing metastory!
    What really happened was different from what you played, because it is just the "memories" of the AI, constructed to make sense for it. The main antagonist is the person whose memories the AI reads into, and the minor antagonists were all his squad members.

    That MGS Twist was awesome actually. Throughout the series, Big Boss is set up to be a God-Like soldier and he actually dies TWICE in the series. Having two Big Bosses in my opinion was awesome, it explained why Big Boss was such a great soldier (being in two places at the same time) it explains why Big Boss dies twice (one death for you and one death for Boss) and to sum it all up, it's just a great thank you to the fans of the series seeing as that was Kojima's final game. SO YOU'RE STUPID!............jk it's all a matter of opinion but there are worst twists out there.

      well too bad that was the only thing on TPP that makes sense. All the other game plot was just gibberish. Retarded at best. It had amazing gameplay etc. but that storyline makes it the worst Metal gear by far. it is almost unrecognisable.

    • @musclebeatsrice1232
      @musclebeatsrice1232 7 років тому +6

      We have a very similar opinion of the game it seems. I thought TPP had the best gameplay of any MGS game, absolutely loved it. But the story, it was the weakest of all MGS games. So it made it kind of a wash for me. But the MGS story was what had pulled me in, so to have a weak story as TPP does it actually makes me rank it the lowest in the series... Fun to play the game, but no depth or substance unlike every other MGS game before it

    Xenogears pretty much revealed Id's true identity very early in the game and at several points during the first half, but only made it obvious when they fully explained it at the very end of the first disc (which was pretty much the 2/3-3/4 point going by the content). It blew my mind when it happened and all of the pieces came together in an instant, making me wonder how I didn't notice it beforehand.

    Missing the absolute pinnacle example of this trope: Silent Hill 2.
    Everyone knows the huge twist of James being the one to kill Mary, but it's amazing that Team Silent had the balls to flat out tell you within the first 15 minutes of the game. After your first monster encounter at the start of the game, James interacts with a portable radio in a cutscene. He hears a garbled woman's voice speaking to him. It's hard to figure out exactly what she tells him, but if you've a close enough ear you can make out Mary saying "James...why did you kill me...James."

    For that last one on your list, you could easily tell you weren't the real snake either as the man who saves you from the hospital and guides you through the place at the very beginning of the game is CLEARLY voiced by Kiefer Sutherland. His face conveniently bandaged up but I know that voice from hours of watching 24 back in college. Seriously a fucking lame twist indeed Kojima. No more than 5 minutes into the game and me and my friends were all like "i-is that kiefer sutherland talking to us? Isnt he snake? Then who the fuck am i playing as???"

    I remember someone saying that as Kojima was leaving Konami and his series behind, the ending twist had a meaning that he is now handing to legendary series to his players, so that it truly becomes our game, in stead of his. Sorry I'm not so fluent in English, but I think that's a pretty cool move

    In Bioshock Infinite, when you first arrive at Columbia, if you look at the statue of R. Lutece, it is actually a statue of Robert that you can see slowly transform into Rosalind hinting at the fact that the twins are the same person. There's a much more subtle one in the middle of the game, where Rosalind is posing for Robert to paint her, and if you look at the canvas, he's painting a portrait of himself.

      Well, to be fair, when you market the hell out of your game as "This is how Big Boss became the bad guy" (even though the ending of MGS3 was enough to explain that. Any game after that, while fun, was largely unnecessary to the story), people are going to misunderstand.

      I believe there were hints with that too. Remember on the Gulag when the Navy kept bombing the building while TF-141 was inside, and Shepherd called them off? Then the second they find Price, the bombing starts again.
      I think Shepherd was trying to kill them all once he was sure Prisoner #627 was Price.
      Also as America is invaded, Shepherd is issued a "blank check" from the president to bolster his war machine, what he'd wanted all along.

    • @samwilliams6407

      in the first level with Shepherd, there was the moment when he loaded three bullets into his gun. These three. bullets were used later against the protagonists, killing two of them and almost killing Soap if Price didn't stop him.

    another thing I noticed playing through Black Ops is that after escaping Vorkuta and racing to a train on motorcycles, you watch the truck Reznov escapes on and it doesn't have a driver; there's no one even left in the truck.
    personally I think the reznov is ded thing is a bit of a stretch, but I guess that was intentional too.

    There was much more to the Red Dead Redemption twist. The mysterious man was actually Death and throughout the quest he tells you every detail of how John will die etc., but of course it's cryptic. The best foreshadowing I've seen i na game.
