Awesome coverage of Twil'eks. Thought I knew a thing or two on them before I saw this. Covered everything from species origin to first society building, clan systems, politics , physical attributes, biology, philosophy to general mentality. Well done 👍
In regards to their extreme variations of colors and patterns, it could very well be just be the fact that they're naturally predisposed to variation on a genetic level. irl there's a snake species called the variable kingsnake, which even without selective breeding will produce clutches of babies that all come out with wildly different colors and patterns, including ones that look nothing like either of their parents
It's so fascinating, and yet i feel so badly for them... something about rooting for the underdog... Really inspired me to make an oc of one with a complex back story and redemption character arc. I wanted to give her her power back. 🙏💪
This right here is why I love the Star Wars universe. It's truly a living, breathing thing. There's a backstory for nearly every species and every individual. Even the "death sticks" guy has a backstory! I love Star Wars
One theory I have to explain the differences in Twi'lek biology is that it's down to thousands years of crossbreeding with humans and other races. With the majority of Twi'leks going off-world being female, people taking note they can reproduce with other species and the sheer timescales we're talking about I believe that a good number of Twi'leks, mostly off world but some on Ryloth, have alien (to them) genes. This leads each of them to have slightly different appearances depending on their ancestry.
Not to mention what region of Ryloth a particular Twi'lek came from originally. Northerns could be blue for example and after generations of breeding together it just became random
@@patchworkfellow Scene: Hera lost her Kalikori and is distraught. Sabine gives her one She and the others made. [Nervously] "I know it's not the same, but we're your family too". Hera(totally not crying or anything).
The Google answer to "Why are Twi'leks so attractive?" didn't mention their vibrant colors. I think that's a major part of their fame. They wouldn't be so iconic with just normal human skin colour, I think.
I agree 👍 I think the reason we don't mention color is because it was so obvious to us that our brain forgot about it. Like how if we Google what human need for survival we mention firemaking kit, tent, rope or hunting knife and not oxygen
"He and Dave Filoni created the liberation of Ryloth to show a different side to the Twi'leks other than the sexualized depictions of Aayla Secura, Darth Talon and Oola" I respect this decision so much. Hera's creation already did a lot to change people's perception of them
So clearly the real reason for the huge variations between twileks is just because of lack of attention to detail between different writers/artists throughout star wars history. But I think the original problem stems from the original two twileks, Oola and Bib Fortuna. I feel like they weren't original intended to be the same species, because aside from the head tails they have nothing in common
I've always assumed they were the same species, but the males looked different from the females. There are a lot of species of animals where the males look drastically different from the females. You're probably right though, they probably intended for them to be different species
I still can't get over the fact that Earth's drugs usually come from plant compounds, whereas in Star Wars people just snorting distilled spider shit like there's no tomorrow.
I mean 'drugs' are just any chemical that alters your brain chemistry. I think the only difference between poison, industrial chemicals, and narcotics is the dosage.
Sometimes I lose the thread because I’m thinking about how much research, writing, editing and just nerd scholarship maximum effort is done on this channel.
I can completely understand the Twi'lek's decision after first contact. Ryloth was a death trap. I think more than anything the initial Twi'lek slaves were sold for a chance at living in a place where they wouldn't fear death at every corner. The philosophy that they could find their place as slaves and live better lives than they would on Ryloth makes great sense. It wasn't until the spice trade really picked up that the bigger problems started. Slavery and drug addiction is a far worse combination than either on their own multiplying the leverage an overlord can have against a group of people. There is also the argument that the gamble paid off. Considering that according to your video Twi'leks are the second most numerous species across the galaxy. They survived and thrived almost as much as humans. The ancient twi'leks won. Prostitution, dancing, service industry. Depending on the culture it might not be a universal evil. Historically it was often an easy way for women without a husband to survive and thrive by themselves. Doesn't mean that Ryloth and Twi'leks didn't get exploited but compared to surviving on Ryloth and maybe dying out without Republic intervention is not that hard to argue for. It's a big game of what ifs in my opinion. Would the Twi'leks have been killed by anything from heat storms to the wild life or would they have been able to survive without selling themselves or their children as slaves? Who the flip knows. Not all species can be Togrutas.
This has got to be among the most comprehensive treatments of these folks I've seen. Well-done. (As for the question, I basically don't see the Twi'leks as being the ones with a whole lot of options on first contact with a vast, technologically-superior galactic civilization. Even if they said 'no' and the Republic respected that, someone else would surely find them and be less 'nice' about it anyway. Really it's the Republic that could have found other options. )
My theory on why they have different colors, male birds have bright colors to attract potential mates. So in theory they use their skin colors to get the attention of someone whom they have romantic feelings for.
Probably originally started with whatever region the Twi'lek was from and after millenia of inbreeding it came to the point anyone could come out any color.

One of the reasons the Republic fell was its corruption. It might be possible that the twi’lek were simply modified by the Rakatans to be capable of interbreeding with other species, as well as attractive through the use of universally enticing hormones. Perhaps their thought process was that if they couldn’t be force sensitive as pure Rakatans, they could regain that sensitivity by breeding with those who were.

tbh the story of Ryloth makes me agree with Star Trek about the Federation's Prime Directive: absolutely no interaction with pre-space travel societies. So much of the Twi'leks' entire history is dominated by exploitation because the Republic dropped down on a society still reliant on windmills and started introducing stuff like inter-planetary travel and the galactic slave trade.

"Sacrificing their youth on the alter of high technology" "It may have been better for the children to grow up as slaves" Speaks a lot about where we are in real life
One of my favourite Star Wars species for obvious reasons. Anyhow, I have a question for you Meta. Could you possibly do a video about the razor crest? I think that would be very interesting.
This is possibly one of the most underrated and underutilized Star Wars alien races. I actually like this alien race in Star Wars my favorite wish you could play as them. More often in the games I bought some of the few games that let. You not only play as one but customize the color (Talking about you Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.) Which had bad controls and gave up because I couldn't put myself through the torture. Of bad clunky movement and hit detection with not just firearms but the lightsaber as well. I eventually broke down and bought Force Unleashed and typed in the codes Aayla and Secura. Both codes unlock Aayla Secura and the green Twilek bounty hunter in Force Unleashed. It's a shame there isn't a Bethesda style Star Wars open world RPG that let's you customize characters race and appearance along with how you want to play. Be it armor and firearms or robes and lightsaber. I'd buy it no questions asked along with a really good Boba Fett game.
Afaik I know Twi'leks seem to become overweight pretty easy because their homeworld doesnt provide much nurishment (they cant afford to waste much). Thus overweight Twi'leks were seen as desireable, because they had abundant food. Thus Orn Free Taa would be one of the most eligable Twi'leks around (deapite his obvious shourtcommings regarding intellect)
They had very little to no options. If they refused to sell their people; then they would've been taken by force and in that case could've been worse since some families didn't participate in doing that. I thought bib fortuna idea had some merit to it but again you would have to sacrifice your people for that plan to workout. But great video well put together as always. I learn so much from the complete life series.
I literally searched the entire internet trying to figure out if there were no twi'leks and only part twi'leks because I thought male twi'leks didn't exist. I completely forgot about things like the mandalorian and rebels lmfao.
You know that there thousands of clubs and bars that catered to female imperial officers that where staffed by male twileks and togrutas during the empire's rain.
now I'm just imagining robotchicken Palpatine saying something like: "you know what we need in this galaxy? equal employment! like if you look at all the Twi'lek women they mostly get employment from their bodies at clubs but what do the men have to work with? I say we make a custom for the male Twi'leks to have equal or similar employment opportunities, after all if I'm gonna rule the galaxy I need to be better than the old republic and all they did for the galaxy!"
Maybe the Twileks were heavily genetically modified from their progenitor species. The Twileks (before the Rakatans got to them) may have been quite disimilar from the "after Rakata" species. The modified species out reproduced the originals. What they were like before is lost to history.
Thanks, I have just now finished 4 year's worth of Star Wars videos. The only ones I wasn't interested in were the streaming videos on gaming. I have been very impressed with the quality of your videos - well done. What would I like to see next? How about Yuuzhan Vong species breakdown? Cheers from Australia.

The Twi`Leks are very similar to humans. Very interesting species.
Twi'lek history: a prime example as to why technology must always advance.
"Sacrificing their youth on the alter of high technology"
"It may have been better for the children to grow up as slaves"
Speaks a lot about where we are in real life

I like that Claudia Gray included Yendor in the Leia novel.
Nice vid!
Twileks are amazing. Great history
Thank you so much for this video. Wonderfully informative.
I'm not a big sci-fan, but I'm addicted to these vids. I just can't believe people go so deep into these stories.
One of my favourite Star Wars species for obvious reasons. Anyhow, I have a question for you Meta. Could you possibly do a video about the razor crest? I think that would be very interesting.
why is my lightsaber rising?
😂😂
Because you wanna commit Genocide?

Great video!!! I wish there were more in depth videos like this about other species in star wars! Thanks for all the hard work!
"The Spice must flow" -a common saying
I am so glad I found this channel!!!!
Very interesting and informative! Keep it up!
Look forward to these videos every week! Great channel!
I literally searched the entire internet trying to figure out if there were no twi'leks and only part twi'leks because I thought male twi'leks didn't exist. I completely forgot about things like the mandalorian and rebels lmfao.
Wow... excellent video
Imagine walking in on a teen Twi'lek vigorously stroking their head tails...
I would
You know that there thousands of clubs and bars that catered to female imperial officers that where staffed by male twileks and togrutas during the empire's rain.
now I'm just imagining robotchicken Palpatine saying something like:
"you know what we need in this galaxy? equal employment! like if you look at all the Twi'lek women they mostly get employment from their bodies at clubs but what do the men have to work with? I say we make a custom for the male Twi'leks to have equal or similar employment opportunities, after all if I'm gonna rule the galaxy I need to be better than the old republic and all they did for the galaxy!"
i like that disney finally incorporated them in the mandalorian and now book of boba fett. i felt like they were missing in the force awakens saga
I feel like I’m missing a heap of information from the comics you show in the video. Nice breakdown 😀
Maybe the Twileks were heavily genetically modified from their progenitor species. The Twileks (before the Rakatans got to them) may have been quite disimilar from the "after Rakata" species. The modified species out reproduced the originals.
What they were like before is lost to history.
Or just not created yet.
I know this is inrellivent from the video. But, i wanted a Star wars movie about gonk droid.
That is important
GNK moment.
6:33 I thought Thrawn was totally crushing on Twi Leks for a second, not actual heat 😂
I would like to see a video on the Pelican dropship from HALO if you can do it.
This was so great!!
Probably the most varied species in Star Wars, mainly because small differences during film and show productions made nerds try to justify them into the lore
- This was a great video. So many Amazing details. Loved it!!! Well done my friend. Could you please do a 30 minute video on the history of the Chiss and there planet Csilla? They’re my favorite. And maybe if you can dig up enough info. Perhaps a video on the history of the Keshiri people?? Thanks again for your effort and hard work putting this video together.
