- KYOTO VIDEO draws near the farcical 90s fantasy comedy anime Dragon Half; a Dragon Quest parody that is so outrageous, it becomes it's own beast entirely. BE WARNED: There will be an over-abundance of chibis.

This is one of the greatest dubs in existence. The opening 2 minutes are Golden Boy legendary.
This Series really needs the Slayers Treatment. Sure, Slayers had some tone-whiplash in its first Season, but that did get ironed out once the second and third season rolled out! The episodes still hold up especially when you get to the last four to five episodes. Nothing but tugged heart-strings!
Part of me really wishes that Slayers could get a reboot more faithful to the light novels and continuing the story, considering that seasons 1 and 2 only adapted Volumes 1-8 and TRY, Evolution, and Revolution-R were their own original stories.
Damn, I love Dragon Half. You've convinced me to rewatch it with the dub. On the topic of comedy anime, you should take a look at Good Luck Girl. It reminds me of Dragon Half for a bunch of reasons.
I applaud your use of "The Great Race", one of my all-time favorites, as an example while discussing the subjectivity of comedy.
I remember getting Dragon Half on DVD in the mid 2000s after hearing it was just as crazy as Puni Puni Poemy.
Getting it and watching it, I was laughing because it reminded me so much of the Hollywood Spoof films of the 80s and 90s like Robin Hood Men in Tights.
It was a parody of classic western fairy tales.
... Wait. I know that age rating panda.
Even for a show about 80s/90s stuff, that sure was a blast from the past :D
I love that you used DMFA's Panda rating icon to hide the fanservice XP
One of the first animes I ever bought on VHS and re-bought on DVD. I prayed for the day when the manga might come out in the states so I could see the rest of Mink's story. The joy I felt when I saw some articles of Dragon Half's manga FINALLY getting a US release. I only had to wait about 20 years. Less with Master Keaton. Dear God, do I love the manga.
I bought this on VHS in the 90's and always wished they would have made more episodes.
One of my favourite ol' classics. I got the DVD and VHS lol.
Yep, this is one of my all time faves. I like to describe it as the Airplane! of anime.
Also, I like that you appreciate good bad dubbing. Cheesy dubs can make a so-so anime so much better.
Yay! Someone liked my favorite show! Thank you!
You're one of my favorite voice actors. I just picked up Dragon Half, upon hearing you were in it, after watching Sorcerer Hunters. Cheers, man. Glad to see you here.
Next up on my ADV to-watch list is Ruin Explorers btw
Great presentation and topic. I went and watched both episodes almost immediately after seeing this video. :)
That ending theme is sooooo goooood.
The intro finishes playing and suddenly I'm greeted by the sound of Tales of Legendia's OST?
Going back through your videos is such a wonderful ride, full of some of the most amazing surprises.
This is a really great vid. Thank you for making it.
I bow to your ability to pronounce "Dick Saucer" with a straight face.
The part where the original Dragon Quest theme is casually swapped out with Dragon Maid's theme song wearing a similar soundfont might be the best editing touch this channel has seen.
Reminds me so much of the animes I used to watch as child.
Hyperactive comedy anime were something of a subgenre in the 90s, weren't they? I remember liking Elf Princess Rane, Haunted Junction and Goldfish Warning during that era.
I would also include Child's Toy, although that had a serious plot I think.
Great video KaiserBeamz
I remember this anime. To sum up its content, give both criticism and praise all in one sentence - _it's just bonkers._
It's on Prime Video, too, I just watched it this morning. It was absolutely ridiculous and I kinda liked it. It's no Excel Saga or ADV!Ghost Stories in my book, but I enjoyed how unapologetically over the top it was. Especially the dub.
I thought I was going insane when I was hear the FFT battle music halfway through haha
It's became a Colt classic I think.
I went to watch this, did not regret it. It was stupid fun. Unfortunate they cut so much. I will have to check out the manga
Thumbs up for the El-Hazard cameo alone.
The unexpected Grown Ups 2 segue broke my neck
Funniest anime I ever saw. One of the few where it was better with the dub
Damn fine video man, great job!
Dex Davis Thank you!
Maybe this kind of thing is why Calvello had to temporarily quit voice acting. She got poisoned by chewing on all the cell paintings.
Dragon half walked so dragon maid could run
I’ll take Dragon-Half over Dragon Maid. There are some funny/good things about Dragon Maid, but there are a lot of Weird as fuck moments for me in that show while Dragon-half is much better.
They need make 6 Episodes
Mink is cute af
Dragon half
Dragon Half is easily my favorite anime of all time and as such I will say there WAS a time when it was hard to get. When it first released in 1995 it was subs only (and came on a green VHS) and was called "the undubbable anime". After the praise the Excel Saga dub got and because Mink and Excel have the same Japanese VA, they decided to dub Dragon Half in 1999 and I'm pretty sure they never re-released the subs (until DVD). The result is that most people were introduced to this anime by the dub...which is in my opinion the worst dub of all time. I could criticize it for HOURS...except for Damuramu who is 100% spot on. Worst voice is King Siva because he actually ruins the joke due to his voice not morphing when he goes from serious to chibi like it does in Japanese. Mink's Mom is also terrible but barely has any lines. Mink is completely intolerable. I would later realize that my hatred of dubs stems almost entirely from ADV though as in the pre-Toonami days, ADV ruled the VHS market...and you couldn't get subs because no one stocked those so you were stuck buying abysmal ADV dubs. Worse still, ADV loved to dub anime about cute girls which they did NOT have the vocal talent for. You are right, they aren't wooden, but EGAD the overacting is intolerable and shrill.
But subbed? I love it. Infact, one day at school I was thinking about watching Dragon Half again, went over it in my mind, and realized I had accidentally memorized every single line of the first episode in both English and Japanese because I had watched it so much.
You are right that it has always been in the background of the anime fandom though. The original subbed version releasing in 1995-ish made it hard to find, but it got passed around fan groups as "the funniest anime ever" for a looong time. Considering what it parodies are RPG tropes everyone is familiar with rather than obscure anime that had not yet been released in America coupled with plenty of slapstick? It IS one of the comedy animes that resonated better with early anime fans. And yeah we hadn't gotten that many comedy anime at the time so that helped too.
Now, after FINALLY having the manga translated (egad that took forever. Incomplete and badly colorized scanslations had been around for years and it got released in MEXICO, but the official US release is VERY recent) and knowing how OVAs work, I finally understand why the Dragon Half OVAs were basically cancelled. The manga is like...the bikini armor fashion show! Some of the best bikini armor designs I've ever seen with new ones appearing all the time. The fanservice is definately a draw! And OVAs? You're usually buying these in Japan one episode at a time for more than $50 each! As such a lot of OVAs tend to have some "money shots", especially for Laserdisc owners. People probably grabbed episode 1 hoping for at least some sexy shots of Mink and friends...only for almost the entire OVA to be drawn in various states of chibi. Seriously they're almost never drawn in full detail. This increases the comedy and makes it an absolute delight to viewers unfamiliar with the manga buying both episodes in a pack for like $20-$30, but would have been a HUGE disappointment to fans of the manga who shelled out $50+ for a single episode.
Yeah...
That said? My "If I won the lottery" will always be "Fund a complete Dragon Half TV series". I am hoping against hope that with the recent waves of anime revivals (Seriously?! Birdie the Mighty?!) maaaybe someone will finally do it for me. I can always hope.
Even if you don't like the two episodes, how can you not like that ending theme song?
I love Dragon Half, really wish we got a lot more....liked the manga as well, but hated the art style change about half way.
5:21 Family Guy is hilarious.
I pity you
